definitely not fulfilling, so I sought out to find a career that made me happy and pursued my passion for the arts. While searching for a career, I interviewed with a radio station and noticed a copy of Lowrider Magazine on the table. I picked it up and the interviewer told me that the magazine was a “men’s publication,” and that I wouldn’t be interested. Not only that, he suggested that I look at the more “girly” magazines on the table, for those would be of more interest to me. Hearing those words, I immediately went home and applied for a position at Lowrider Magazine. After 5 years of being an editor at Lowrider Magazine I felt as though I wanted more, more in the sense of creating something of my own that inspired women and showed them how to not only look good but feel good inside.

the letter Ever since I was a little girl I was always fascinated with magazines, probably just like many of you. I collected Teen Bop, Seventeen, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, People Style Watch; the list could go on forever. I would cut pictures out and make collages or rip out pictures and tape them on my wall making a huge mess, but as I got older I started realizing there was more to women and girls other than makeup, love and fitness. I started taking sociology and women’s studies courses in college and I wanted to see a difference in the media and the real world. I soon found out about Attract Magazine through an internship program online, I started as an intern editing print and online articles, shooting behind the scenes footage at photo-shoots and posting to Attract Magazine’s social media outlets. Almost a year later I have officially joined the
team and I am so glad that I can be a part of a magazine that represents more than glamour and relationships. Attract features and spotlights career driven and outspoken women from all walks of life, not just celebrities. I am so excited for you all to see our new digital issue of Attract Magazine. I hope it’s something fresh and new for you to enjoy, while recognizing that we’re in a new era of hard-working women who stop for nothing.

From running up debt in college, handling student loan payments, to even paying the cell phone bill on time, maintaining good credit can be a minefield for singles. The typical scenario is that you will get excited about a potential big purchase, house, car, etc., sit down with the banker and then find out the news that your credit is not in the best shape and that you will not be able to make the purchase at this time. How to prevent the shock at the bank? 1.) Protect your credit like it is precious because it is. Yes, you can repair your credit if you have had mistakes in the past, but it will take time and in the interim you will miss out on low interest rates, special offers and even the opportunity to purchase a home. 2.) If there are credit mistakes you would like to put behind you start working on that now. Don’t wait until you want or need to use your credit, take control of it now. Get a copy of your credit report and go through it line by line and anything that needs to be repaired, start the process now. 3.) Pay your bills on time. Yes, this should go without saying, but even a late cell phone payment can appear on your credit report. 4.) Don’t max out your credit. Don’t run up your credit cards to the limit or apply for too much credit. 5.) Save. This is important. Build an emergency fund with at least 6 months to a year of expenses. Plan ahead for major purchases or travel so that you don’t have to rely so heavily on credit. Taxes The dreaded “T!” As you are on your way up the work ladder, taxes become a big part of your financial picture. It is very easy to end up owing Uncle Sam if you are not paying attention to how much taxes are being withheld from your paycheck. As your salary increases, it would be wise to engage a tax preparer to get you on the right track and make sure that you are giving Uncle Sam his due. If you do find yourself owing taxes, make payment arrangements immediately! Don’t let this fester. For as long as the bill is unpaid, interest and penalty accrues and increases the total amount you owe.

Dear Powerful Woman,
I want you to know, I have been on your path. I understand why you make yourself small, why you put on a mask each day and pretend that you don’t get pissed off or lay in bed at night silently wondering is this all there is? I know that, when people kindly ask how you are, you put on a smile and say, “Great!” even when all the shit in your life is falling all around you so fast that you can’t catch it all. And I know your fear, anxiety, and terror around your own immeasurable beauty and power. I was born a bright light, just like you. Throughout my life, as time went on, I chose my experiences and felt the sting of my wounds. I began to hide my essence and dim my shine. I know you did, too. We all do it on some level. When I was young, I mistakenly learned that it was better to be the “good and appropriate girl” in order to survive. I didn’t want to be labeled as a problem, a bitch, or one of “those” girls. It was safer not to bring attention to my power? I lied to myself and stayed inside the imaginary lines. I remained inside a proverbial box and bought the illusion of the American dream – the husband, the house, the cars, and the money. But as time went on, the box became tighter and smaller, and my frustrations started to seep through the cracks. I used whoever was safest to be my emotional whipping post. As time went by I took those frustrations out on my family and friends. But mostly I took them out on myself, sowing the seeds of

self-denial and watering them with the bitter acid of discontent. It took time – lots of time. It took heartache – god, so much heartache – but the walls of my box began to crack. I started being honest with myself, and making decisions based on what I wanted and needed, and not what I was supposed to want or need. Light began to shine, and I started to see that it wasn’t light from outside shining in; it was my own light shining through those cracks, from the inside out. And when it did, the world didn’t fall apart. I didn’t lose friends (not the ones who mattered, anyway), and I didn’t lose respect (I only gained it).
I realized that I get to choose. And so do you. I see that you are dying to break out of your box and feel your own power. You long to walk your own path without apology and to step into you own personal truth. Here’s the thing: only you can identify and own that - not your family, not your kids, not your partner – no one else but your own self. Here’s my humble advice: • Commit to curiosity. Be open to all that you experience and know that the world is yours for the taking.
work your edge to come into an awareness of who you are. • Surrender to what is. Even when you judge it as messy, fat, ugly, or angry, embrace it in this moment. • Cultivate conscious choice. Refuse to play a victim to your consequences. Look at every person and situation as your teacher.
with gratitude. Awaken to your beauty, your power, and your wisdom. You have been given many gifts to help you in your journey and to pass along for the greater good. Don’t squander your life by living someone else’s ideal.
• Own your life. Take responsibility for your actions and be honest with yourself about your positive and negative roles. Own that shit, and get over it.
With grace and effortlessness, embrace the power and light that you bring into the world. Allow it to SHINE each and every moment.
• Take assertive action. Set your intention to wake up each day and ask yourself, “What am I doing on this planet? What do I want to get out of this day?”
You deserve that, just like I do. And the world needs us to be who we are here to become and to SHINE.
• Envision limitless possibility. Make a commitment to stop the “shoulds” and to start the “coulds.”
• SHINE your light. Don’t hide your power out of fear, anger, blame, or self-judgment. Define your power and BE that power.
• Understand your story. Commit to healing and

The Truth It’s All About SoulCycle @soulcycle By: Lindsey Simcik www.soul-cycle.com
[ ATTRACT ]
16
@girlsnight
Why do you think SoulCycle has become so popular?
The results speak for themselves. The Soul community is what keeps me coming back. Everyone--staff, instructors, and riders--hold themselves accountable and to a higher standard because of each other. I draw strength, energy and inspiration from my riders every single time I step into the studio. That moment when you feel like you have no more to give, and then you do...that feeling keeps people coming back. What’s the difference between SoulCycle and doing a regular cycling or spin class? At SoulCycle we ride as a pack to the beat of the music, in a dark candle lit room. The rhythm inspires our movement, we get high on sweat, and lose our sh*t a little bit in order to find exactly what we need to live our best life. We push our limits every single time we step into the studio. You might not know a single soul in that room, but the energy from your neighbor has the
power to inspire you to reach the next level. It surprises me every time. What types of results do you gain from attending a class? On a physical level, your cardio and endurance levels will improve dramatically after just a handful of classes. You set the tone - you get out of class what you put in. Some days you might just need to get an insane workout, other days a class might be your therapy session, a time to hang and sweat with friends, or it might be the one hour in your day you have to yourself. Let it be what you need. Any advice for the “Newbies”? Don’t think too much. It’s always scary to try something new. I was a first time rider once, I get it! I was sweating before I even entered the studio! Save the sweating for the workout--your instructor and the pack will take care of you, so all you have to do is be curious and have fun!! Check your ego at the door, and be prepared to surprise your-
self--you’ll give more than you ever thought you could. What makes SoulCycle the best choice from other cycling sources? I fell in love with SoulCycle, not only because it helped me to get into great shape, but because I felt my mood elevate, my perspective become clearer, my priorities align, and my sense of self strengthen in a room full of strangers, who soon became my friends. I never thought a workout could be more than something I did just to stay fit. It has given new energy to every aspect of my life. So I just tell people to try it out for the possibility (PERIOD). Anything could happen, so ride for that.

I’m Going Vegan
A 14-year old Vegan Tells her Story
The word “Vegan” is definitely getting more and more popular these days. A lot of people all over the world are starting to go vegan. Being a vegan is something much more than a diet or a way of eating, it is a lifestyle where a person does not eat or wear anything that is of animal origin. There are a lot of reasons why someone practices veganism, most of the time because of animal rights, health benefits, and environmental reasons.
healthy food on Instagram and other social media. As a kid, I always thought that fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy food are gross, and I was munching on food that has no nutritional value everyday without knowing what I’m doing to my body. I never really cared about how ‘eating’ is going to affect my health, my body, let alone the environment and ‘where my food came from’, or ‘how my food was made’.
Today I’m going to share with you my story, about how I, a 14 year old, girl became vegan overnight. My name is Chelsea, better known as @healthiecook on Instagram, where I share pictures and recipes of the food I make.
I was so inspired by all those colorful pictures of healthy food and for the first time in my life, I thought fruits and vegetables actually look “appealing”! I began to read various food blogs, articles, and then I started making my own recipes and sharing them on social media!
A little bit about me, I started paying attention to my health and what I put inside my body when I was 13 years old, after I saw a lot of people posting about

My passion for making (and eating) healthy food grew each day and my bad eating habits were changed in no time

at all! Here’s a picture of what I usually have for breakfast. Made from frozen bananas, berries, and juicy mangos! I never imagined that fruits can actually taste this good! (image 1) However, at that time I was still eating meat-dairy-eggs-seafood, unaware of the cruelty behind them all. Like most people, I didn’t make the connection between ‘living animals’ and ‘what’s on my plate’. Until one day, one of my friends on Instagram made a post about how she cried after watching a documentary called “Earthlings”. I was really curious about it and watched it online. It was the first time I cried because of watching a film. I was so angry, shocked, sad, and surprised at the same time. I learned that the world we live in isn’t like what
it’s supposed to be anymore. I learned that it costs so much pain and suffering to others just for us to enjoy a meal. I learned how selfish we are to take away what’s not even ours to take to begin with. It’s so sad but such an eye-opener, I really recommend you to watch this film, just be ready though, I think you’ll never look at meat the same way again after watching this film! My purpose is not to force anyone into becoming a vegan, or to judge someone just because that person eats meat, because everyone has a right to make their own decisions. I just want to share with people the truth that I learned, and let people decide themselves. It’s not anyone’s fault that the industry is as it is now, because most people just don’t know the truth.
“Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries with Vegan Ketchup”.
Recipe:
For the fries (curry spice seasoning): Maybe it sounds hard to you, to live without meat, cheese, eggs, butter, milk, and other things, but it’s actually very easy! With the numbers of vegans increasing, there are a lot of vegan options out there: vegan cheese, vegan butter, various plant milks (almond, cashew, coconut, soy, hemp, oat, etc). You can still enjoy your favorite foods like ice cream, pizza, fries, burger, cheese, and so much more without the guilt! Moving on to one of the best parts! Eating vegan means you’ll get to eat so much more! For example, here’s what I ate yesterday: Breakfast: ice cream made from 5 frozen bananas and other fruits with granola (the texture is really like a soft-serve). Lunch: 2-3 cups cooked rice with Chinese style stir fried tofu and vegetables. Snack: 1 cup rolled oats cooked with a banana, berries, cashew milk, almond butter, and coconut sugar. Dinner: 2-3 cups cooked rice, crispy oven baked sweet potato fries with balsamic-roasted beets and edamame. This might seem a lot to you (I’m only 5 ft / 154 cm), but remember that whole, plant-based foods are so
much lower in calories (and so much higher in nutrition) so you’ll need to eat a lot more to get enough calories and nutrition! (which is a very good thing if you ask me!) On top of all that, eating vegan makes me feel the best I’ve ever been my whole life (not a surprise, with all those nutritious whole foods going inside!). I used to rely on coffee every morning just to keep me awake, as I need to get up at 5 AM (school starts at 6.30 AM where I live), but now I can happily say I don’t need any caffeine boost to get through my day! I have so much energy, and the most important thing is, I am happy. I am happy because I know that the food that I eat didn’t cause any pain and suffering to others, I am happy because I know that I am taking care of my body by giving it all the nutrients that it needs, and I am happy because everything I eat tastes delicious!
1/2 kg sweet potatoes 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, but this makes them even crispier) 1 tbsp curry powder 1 tsp smoked paprika powder salt, pepper, to taste For the Vegan Ketchup: 1/2 kg tomatoes (I like to use cherry tomatoes), sliced 4 cloves garlic (peel, but leave them whole) 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp coconut sugar 1 tsp dried herbs salt, pepper to taste Method: To make the ketchup, preheat your oven to 200 Celcius, line a large baking sheet (or use 2 smaller ones) with parchment paper. Arrange the tomatoes evenly on the baking sheet; put the whole garlic cloves with the tomatoes. Roast for 20-30 minutes (watch closely to make sure they don’t burn) until tomatoes are kind of wrinkled and ‘caramelized’ in some spots. Your kitchen will smell heavenly. Put the tomatoes & garlic into a food processor, puree until smooth. Add in the rest of the ingredients, blend until mixed. Adjust seasonings to taste. To make the fries, preheat your oven to 200 Celsius; line a large baking sheet (or use 2 smaller ones) with parchment paper. Cut sweet potatoes into fries (cut it thinner, makes them crispier!). Wash them; shake off the excess water, pat dry with a paper towel. Toss the potatoes with all the cornstarch and seasonings, arrange them on a single layer on the baking sheet (don’t overcrowd the pan or they won’t crisp up properly). Bake for 30-40 minutes, depending on your oven and how thick/thin you cut them (watch closely to make sure they don’t burn) until golden brown and crispy! Serve with the homemade vegan ketchup. And there you have it! A nice serving of healthy, fat free, vegan fries with ketchup! YUM.

treatyourself Vanessa Simmons Explores Relaxation with Burke Williams By: Vanessa Simmons As a new mom relaxation and ME time is a must , walking into a spa instantly infuses tranquility into my oxygen supply, a bit dramatic, I know, but I just love the feeling to be able to just relax and enjoy the luxury of being pampered. My most recent “Spacation” was at Burke Williams in West Hollywood. I had already been a big fan of their location in Santa Monica so I was very excited to see what the WeHo location had to offer. After checking in I was escorted to the locker room which
was very cozy and featured a quaint hot tub area which I happily indulged in before my treatment. My treatment was called the Emilee’s Infused, which left my skin silky smooth, hydrated and in the words of my masseuse I had been given a full body tune up, Indeed. After enjoying the saunas for a bit I was headed home a very happy mommy and a happy mommy=happy baby which makes a happy home and happy life! Thank you Burke Williams for my amazing day

Style Hack #1: Steal His Tees

style your bump by repurposing his clothes own it!! By: Tina Tovmasian @tinatovmasian Content Director and Lifestyle Blogger at Sointheknow.com Pregnancy is an out of this world experience and even though this is my second pregnancy, I am still fascinated by the whole process, but more so the end results. But as beautiful as pregnancy is, having a baby can quickly turn into flying hormones, long to-do lists and a shrinking bank account. So how do you stay stylish on top of all of that? The truth is, sometimes you have no desire to shop because you’re either too tired, too broke or see no point in investing in clothes that will be too big for you in a few months. My solution to this shopping and style dilemma has been to raid my hubby’s closet and repurpose and restyle his clothes into my maternity wardrobe. It may sound difficult to do, but with a few clever touches you can make good use of his closet. I’ve come up with 3 style hacks on how to do this, but I’m sure you can get creative and come up with more. Style Hack #1: Steal His Tees When you’re pregnant, sticking to loose and long tees is the way to go because they’re comfortable and cover your growing belly. Hubby’s tees are just that – loose and long so I’ve stolen most of them. I pair them with jeans, shorts and sometimes even put a belt above my belly and wear them as a t-shirt dress. I usually finish with some accessories (necklace, colorful bag) to give it a girly touch. Style Hack #2: Borrow the Button-Ups Button-ups are a perfect companion for your growing belly, if you want to style the bump and look trendy. They are dressier than plain tees so you can wear them out on date nights (which I hope you’re still going on) or while you’re out with the girls for some cocktails (oh how I miss me a good cocktail or two). Pair them with dressy pants or shorts or wear them over skirts for a more professional look. The possibilities are endless.
Style Hack #2: Borrow the Button-Ups
Style Hack #3: Wear the Pants Ladies! I’ve completely taken over my hubby’s pant section. I’ve turned his jeans into “boyfriend jeans” by rolling up the bottoms and wearing them with wedges since my high heels have been retired until I can find my balance again. Instead of plain tees, I pair his pants with a more feminine blouse so that I don’t look too tomboyish. If you want to keep it casual and comfy, pair the pants with cool sneakers such as chucks or low espadrilles (which are all the rage now).
So style that bump but instead of spending money on a whole new wardrobe get creative with what you’ve got (or in this case what he got). Save your moolah and instead pampering yourself, save that extra cash for a few boxes of Pampers.
Wear the Pants Ladies!

Cool Kids: Threads by the HAUS OF JR @hausofjr By: The Founder of Haus of JR- Chris and Sophia A bit about the inception of Haus of JR: My husband Chris and I have been married for almost 3 years. We have a 26 month old daughter and a 7 month old son. After having our first child, I noticed a lack of trendy clothes for kids.
I then looked deeper and brought up the idea of distressed denim for kids to my husband. Distressed denim (Saint Laurent, Balmain etc) is such the trend right now and literally no children brand out there offered them. He finally agreed and we brainstormed to add some essentials to the collection such as elongated tees and side zip hoodies – trendy but every day basic! My husband and I are both self-employed (he’s in the clothing industry and I am in the real estate industry) which makes us very busy with our careers, so we figured this would be a fun “passion” project for the both of us to do together. We wanted the brand to represent us and our kids and that’s how HAUS OF JR was created (our kids names, Jordyn + Ryder). Leading up to its debut, HAUS OF JR has received noteworthy attention from various blogs and social media outlets. Kitson was one of the few premium boutiques we’d hope would carry our brand and was so thrilled when they picked up our first collection; we are now on their window display! Dreams do come true.

17 best apps for fashion bloggers on-the go fashion at your fingertips By: Nayri Leanna Gregor CEO & Style Blogger at Sointheknow.com @sointheknow
Because I travel quite a bit doing media tours across the country, I find myself confined to managing my life, blog and business mostly, if not entirely, on my IPhone. Lately I’ve been on my A-game testing out and putting together a list of best apps for fashion bloggers and now, my phone is souped up and ready to go with quite a few extra time savers. Or shall I say life savers? Either way, these are currently my favorite ones I have on my phone and can’t live without. 1. Facetune for editing skin blemishes. Basically, it’s photoshop but dummy-proof. It’s great for outfit posts and selfies because it allows you to smooth skin, whiten teeth and even patch imperfections. 2. Camera+ for taking better phone pictures. It’s an app that perfects the art of taking photos. Rather than taking your pictures with your ba[ ATTRACT ]

sic camera phone, use this app to enhance the quality and capture what your phone’s lens can’t. 3. VSCO camera for photo editing. I like to use this app to automate my photo filters and prepare them for social sharing. There are a lot of editing apps, but I like this one because it duals a a camera, has minimal filter options, and allows you to auto-
mate the process so that your photos have a unique-to-your-personality style. 4. Splice for video editing. I love editing videos, and I don’t get to do enough of it (yet). This app lets you do quick video edits for social media sharing. Load your clips, crop the timing, add a song and you’ve got an edited video in minutes. 5. Replay for video styling. This is great for adding transitions and effects to your video. You can choose from templates or creates your own. I like to edit on Splice first to create my video clips, then I use Replay to animate it. 6. Google Drive for digital file management. I cannot live without it. When I get emails saying “I lost this file” or “can you send me these pictures again” there’s no way I’m about to wait to get on a computer to send important files. That’s why I keep Google drive on my phone for immediate access to all my necessary files. 7. Mint for managing your money. It’s your accounting robot best friend for life. No really, it’ll tell where all your money is, and where it’s going, credit checker, and budget tracker all in one place, on one user-friendly screen. If you don’t like numbers, nough’ said!
8. Sunrise to hike up your productivity. Stay punctual by syncing all your calendars to Sunrise. It’s just about the coolest calendar app where you can send meeting requests, check confirmations from your team and set reminders, get notifications when other people makes changes to your appointments. 9. Fashion GPS for event invitations and sample tracking. Get all your fashion shows and event invitations in one place plus, keep your samples on check. When you are doing reviews on products and items, the last thing you want to do is deal with figuring out where everything is and if you sent it back or if it got lost somewhere at a photoshoot. Ditch the old school paper and pen method and go with this app to save yourself the time and the Asprin you’ll need from invite and inventory headaches. 10. Flipboard for staying in the know. My need to read and see what’s going on in the world is solved with this app. It’s a news aggregator. You tell the app what your favorite new outlets are, and it will deliver it to you in a nice and neat Flipboard. It’s kinda like tinder but for articles instead of dates. If you like what you see, click on it to read more, if you don’t, just swipe to see what’s next. 11. Hootsuite for most things social media. issue 02

Schedule your posts, keep track of your comments, reshares, retweets, and more! 12. Latergram to schedule Instagram posts. Unfortunately, IG is a little stubborn bee and it doesn’t allow you to pre-load posts. For that, I use Latergram to schedule and manage my Instagram feed. Although it doesn’t allow you to pre-schedule directly to IG, it gives you a calendar where you will load captions and photos. and get alerts when it’s time to post so that you can manually login and post to Instagram. 13. Phhhoto for making funnies. This app lets you create fun gifs, share them instantly to your social media pages, and send them out via email or text. Shout out to my friend Karen who introduced me to it! 14. PicFrame for outfit post awesomeness. Sometimes it’s better to do style posts as a split-framed image. That’s why I keep this on deck when I need to do a far shot, and closer one to show details. 15. Expedia for travel itineraries. Because I don’t need to be thinking about flight times and check ins. This app notifies me when I need to check into a flight, gives me all the information I need about it, updates [ ATTRACT ]
56 www.attractmag.com
me about changes, and if I ever need a last minute booking (which has happened a few times) I can search and book what I need right there on my phone and get extra reward points for using the app versus their website. 16. PlayMemories for high quality photo transfers. This app only works with my SONY camera. Rather than transferring photos via SD card, I just WIFI them onto my phone. If you’re completely confused about what I just said, it means that I can take pictures on a professional camera and I can instantly send them to my phone without having to hook it up to anything. I just need to put my camera on a wifi mode, open this app, select the pictures I want, and they magically appear on my phone. It’s probably the coolest thing since cordless phones. 17. ToDoist for task management. Blogging as a business means wearing every hat possible. You’re the face of the company, the writer, ideator, team leader, cheerleader, relationship manager, content uploader, editor, and so on and so forth. Let this app work for you and take the pressure and worry out of missing deadlines and managing your team, so you have more time to tend to your personal life.

LA Fashion
By: Nayri Leanna Gregor CEO & Style Blogger at Sointheknow.com @sointheknow If you’re strapped for time and not sure what to pack or wear, I’ve got you covered. Here are my top 10 suggestions on what you’ll need to create chic, sleek #LAFW-worthy outfits.
1. Structured tote You’ll be going from one show to another, and before you know it it’s lunchtime, dinner, drinks and the after party. Take a structured tote, on the larger side, to fit all your notebooks, iPad, a change of clothes, your camera, and of course, a pair of flats. (image 1) $166.99
[ ATTRACT ]
2. Versatile vest Nothing beats a versatile vest when you don’t have enough time to create a brand new day-to-night look. Just zip on or off the detachable piece of the best, and magically you have a brand new outfit. (image 2) $148.00
58 www.attractmag.com
3. High Waist midi skirt When I say get comfy, I mean it. Midi skirts are both chic and comfortable, without looking too laid back. Go for a trendy high waist style that cinches at the waist, and don’t be afraid to be bold and pair it with contrasting prints, crop tops and button-ups. (image 3) $76.50
4. Floppy Felt Hat It’s LA, you’ll need a hat to block out the sun and prevent getting burned during outdoor fashion shows and networking events. Plus, it’s the perfect fix to every bad hair day. (image 4) $28.00
@qoutes
5. Classic Shades No sleep? No worries. After a long day of fashion shows, expect to be up late at private parties and brand sponsored events. Hide your hangover and everything else the next day with a pair of classic stunner shades. That way you’ll drive the attention away from your face and onto your outfit. (image 5)$149.95
6. Comfy Flats These are a must. Ballet, pointy toe, perforated- there are plenty of options to choose from. Grab a pair and throw them in your tote bag and wear them in between camera opps so you’re not crying sore feet for weeks after the event. (image 6) $88
7. Dual Tone Pumps Grab a fabulous pair that’s also multi-functional. I went with this dual tone pump because it goes with both neutral earth tones as well as monochrome outfits. (image 7) $39.95
8. Shea Butter Lipstick LA casual is a real thing. Yes, we glam up but if you notice, even most red carpet looks are on the softer side. Go for a nude hydrating lipstick for a more natural, effortless look. (image 8) $8.00

Read below to see why she is our main chick! ABOUT ME: Born and raised in the Valley, Los Angeles has always been my stomping ground. I’ll be the first to admit that the city has its pros and cons, creating my dysfunctional love/ hate relationship with it, but at the end of the day it will always be home and have a special place in my heart. Although I grew up in a “suburban bubble” in Calabasas, I was fortunate enough to travel often, beginning at young age. I vividly remember trips to [ ATTRACT ]

Rome, Milan, Paris, and Prague and my summers spent in Israel with relatives. While some kids might not appreciate the luxury of traveling, I remember always feeling grateful and excited to be in a new world and to experience a different cultureit fascinated me. I decided to stay in Los Angeles after high school to go to UCLA for college and study World Arts & Cultures. I learned about different cultures from around the world and was encouraged to embrace them through my travels. Travel has shaped me into the person I am today.
I believe travel and culture is important for all aspects of life. To be able to see how people live in a place so far is eye-opening. It is so important to interact and embrace people who live differently. Travel has given me knowledge that you can’t learn in a classroom. I learn so much while traveling about culture, politics, history, economics, nature, and so much more. I always come back from a trip with a greater sense of self-awareness, feeling more grounded, and most importantly, grateful. My most cherished memories are those moments
throughout my travels that have impacted my life and will stay with me forever. Some of my favorite travel highlights include being on the top of Machu Picchu walking through the clouds as the sun was rising; riding an elephant through the jungle in Chang Mai, Thailand; swimming in the warm rain at Kawasan Falls in Cebu, Philippines; floating in a Hot Air Balloon sunrise safari over the Serengeti watching wild animals graze peacefully; connecting with a little girl who spoke no English in a Masai village in Tanzania; and taking in the most breathtaking sunset over the
ocean in the picturesque town of Oia, Santorini. I am blessed for these experiences and will never take these moments for granted. People often ask me how I got started. There’s really no secret to following your dreams. I just started. Instead of shopping and buying material things, I bought memories and experiences. Instead of keeping up with what was “cool” and buying the newest fashion craze, I bought plane tickets. I just started writing and sharing my experiences on my blog years ago as a hobby and passion. is to do what your passionate about until eventually someone believes in you enough to pay you to do something you were always willing to do for free. I had a regular job as a producer on E!’s hit television show Fashion Police for over four years, and would travel and blog with any free time that I had. Blogging is extremely time-consuming and the bloggers who are successful make it their full time job. I didn’t have the luxury of blogging full time because of my job at E! so I tried to balance blogging and work to the best of my ability. I sometimes wonder where I would be if I would have quit my regular job a long time ago and taken a risk in pursuing my dreams as a full time travel & food blogger. I wonder, but I have no regrets. HOMETOWN FAVORITES
california love By: Nicole Isaacs
For someone who is constantly jet-setting and exploring new places, there is something comforting about coming home to familiarity and hitting up your favorite “go to” spots. As a LA native, the places I hit up regularly offer amazing food and feel-good experiences that keep me coming back for more: FAVORITE HIKE | CABELLERO CANYON I don’t like the gym--I find it difficult to stay motivated inside during boring workouts. I enjoy staying in shape by staying active outside in the warm LA sun. Hiking is my go-to activity to unwind and enjoy my city. Even though Runyon Canyon seems to get the most buzz, and don’t get me wrong, it’s a great hike with a beautiful city view, I prefer the less scene-y trails. At the top of Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana (south of the Boulevard) is one of the
[ ATTRACT ]
Valley’s best-kept secrets. The Reseda trail is a little more strenuous, and it’s a good idea to get there early in the day to beat the heat, especially during the scorching summer months. A good runner up is Escondido Falls in Malibu--it’s full of plush trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls. And, of course, I look forward to a delicious toasted wrap from Malibu Kitchen or sandwich from John’s Garden at the Malibu Country Mart after my hike. FAVORITE BURGER | FLEMINGS STEAKHOUSE I live for burgers. My favorite is Fleming’s Prime Burger. I get it medium-rare with cheddar cheese, bacon, and their chipotle-aioli dressing. This is quite literally my idea of perfection. And if you catch happy hour, it’s $6! Los Angeles is littered with gourmet burger
68 www.attractmag.com
hotspots and dive bars including Father’s Office, Plan Check Bar, Umami (their truffle burger is the way to go), Chateau Marmont, and of course In N’ Out. SUNDAY BRUNCH | FOUR SEASONS BEVERLY HILLS Sunday brunch is one of my favorite indulgences. The brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills is on the pricey side but worth the splurge. It’s a beautiful way to spend a Sunday in Los Angeles and they offer everything you could want for brunch from freshly squeezed juices to pastries and sweets to PB&J and Mac N Cheese. For more cost conscious brunch options and amazing food, check out Blu Jam Cafe, Cici’s Café, Joan’s On Third, and The Griddle.
FAVORITE MEXICAN RESTAURANT | SOL Y LUNA I’m a Cali girl--I appreciate good Mexican food. My favorite Mexican restaurant is Sol Y Luna in the Valley (same ownership and menu as Las Fuentes which has a more hole-in-the-wall vibe). Their flavors are incredible and fresh, and their food never feels heavy or over powering. My go-to dish is their Mulitas, but the Mojacuete and table side guacamole are must-orders. FAVORITE INDULGENCE (ON A BUDGET) | CHINESE FOOT MASSAGE One of my favorite things to do in my free time and when I want to relax is get a $20 full body massage. Yes, that’s right: $20! I didn’t accidentally leave off a ‘0’. You can find hole in the wall massage spots all over the Valley
@qoutes
and they are better than any fancy spa massage I’ve ever had. My favorite secret spot is Shangri-la Foot massage in Woodland Hills. A full-body massage is the perfect way to spend an hour, especially for 20 bucks. FAVORITE STEAK & DESSERT | MASTROS STEAKHOUSE My favorite steakhouse, which also serves my favorite desert, is Mastros Steakhouse. They serve the best steak in LA. and can finish your meal with their signature Warm Butter Cake. I’m not huge on sweets and dessert, but this is my favorite dessert bar none. Their newer Malibu Ocean Club location offers a beautiful view of the ocean and their Beverly Hills restaurant has a livelier scene. FAVORITE BEACH | PARADISE COVE BEACH Los Angeles doesn’t offer a bunch of eateries on the beach, which is part of what makes Paradise Cove so special. Paradise Cove is a secluded stretch of beach in front of the Paradise Cove Beach Café, equipped with cabanas and beach chairs so you can enjoy a
meal without leaving the beach. In addition to the convenience of the café, Paradise Cove isn’t over crowed like some of the other Los Angeles beaches, it’s a great spot to just hang out. FAVORITE PASTA | CAFE BIZOU Cafe Bizou, a french bistro in Sherman Oaks, has been a family tradition ever since I was a little girl. We’ve spent countless special occasions and family dinners at this restaurant- and the food is consistently good. The spicy chicken fettuccine is one of my favorite pasta dishes. Order it extra spicy for an extra kick. FAVORITE PIZZA | BESTIA My favorite pizza in LA is at Bestia, located in the heart of downtown LA’s Art District. I’ve tried the popular pizzerias like Mozza, and Gjelina, but they just didn’t match up. Bestia’s pizzas are light, flavorful and delicious. FAVORITE VIEW | ROOFTOP GARDEN, SOHO HOUSE My favorite view of the Los Angeles skyline is from the Rooftop Garden at Soho house. High above the hustle and
bustle of Sunset Boulevard, Soho House offers the best 360 views of the city checking the commotion of West Hollywood at the door. It’s a members’ only spot, but if you don’t have a membership, you can still go with a member and check out their restaurants and lounges. It’s one of my favorite spots to hang out and have dinner. FAVORITE HOTEL POOL | SLS HOTEL, BEVERLY HILLS Trendy hotel pools and poolside lounges have become a thing in the summer months in LA. Most hotels from DTLA to Hollywood offer great poolside hangouts, which escalate into pool parties during peak season. My favorite of these is the rooftop pool at SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. The SLS pool is open to the public Monday through Thursday but is reserved for hotel guest Friday through Sunday, although they do open the cabanas for purchase to the public even on the weekends. The rooftop lounge isn’t as big as most of the other pools in Los Angeles which makes it easy to maintain the calm and
lock out the aggressive party crowd. The SLS offers a great selection of poolside food and cocktails to enjoy from the comfort of your lounge chair, which makes for a perfect day spot to relax in the sun. FAVORITE STREET FOOD | BACON WRAPPED HOTDOG Head downtown toward the fashion district and you won’t be able to miss the street carts of sizzling hotdogs wrapped in bacon. Most stands serve the dogs with grilled peppers, onions and jalapeños, topped with fresh avocado, tomato salad, and hot sauce. It’s one of my foodie guilty pleasures.

What’s Your Marital Status?! By: Elle Billeaud @elle_bow Photo By: Kristina McManus @kristina_mcmanus
Marriage in the U.S. has hit its peak in the popularity contest that is life. Whether you’re thinking about it, nowhere near it; in it; or out of it; IT matters A LOT to our society. Marriage: A contractual obligation in the eyes of the law. Yet, there is so much more packed into the word. An old construct based on the principles that a woman’s only worth lies in her housekeeping and baby making abilities, has since been re-vamped to mean ‘love.’ Women used to formally join a man in matrimony by forking up a dower: The capital would be for the potential husband to take the woman off their hands. Lucky if the bride brought enough capital to the table as investment than the marriage was considered to be successful. If she was attractive — then, score! The extravagant bridezilla controlled fairytale-like weddings that daddies pay for are the investment now; and, likewise, have nearly half a chance of ending in divorce. Some of the most pompous, lavish affairs have been high-profile rushed marriages that lasted shorter than their premarital relationship — Even people who have been married and divorced so many times wonder why they keep trying, roll the dice despite passing that “third time’s the charm” quota. Latching on to this

idea that marriage is a fairy tale and all attending should feel like the royal entourage is simply the wrong focus! Why is there so much hating on the concept of marriage and its ill-conceived control on how spiritual love and physical intimacy work? Studies have found that biologically women and men are not inherently different, but rather their surroundings socially construct this form of dichotomy. Questioning the theory of monogamy is not easily achieved by man — prone to wander with his pants down — has steadily grown. Does anyone really believe that monogamy is easier for a woman? Is infidelity only
the plight of the male gender? More importantly, why is a promiscuous woman categorized as a she-devil, man-eater, or just plain ole slut?! If the ultimate goal in life is to marry, have kids and stay at home, why do so many of us seem exhausted, bored, sexually dissatisfied or even truly unhappy with this path? The correlation in the rise of anti-depressant and libido drug usage can hardly be a coincidence. We have grown up fantasizing about our dream wedding composed of a groom, gown and guests. As little girls we played house with kitchen sets and Barbie dream houses. Our iden-
tities are synonymous with sexualized versions of the perfect doll that does it all. Delving deeper into a woman’s worth as a lady in the streets, but a freak in the bed, what if the bed partner just isn’t that exciting to be a freak with? Whose fault is it for keeping the flame alive? Because there just aren’t that many novelties stores for men as there are for women?! The societal legitimacy and pressures associated with marriage are boundless, like the degradation or ‘unnaturalness’ a married woman experiences when she’s not feminine enough or doesn’t want to conceive. Evidence shows
marriage benefits the health of men, but a divorced woman’s chance of using substances increases. What once entrapped us into an arrangement with a stranger as their chattel; venerated our virginities as a commodity; and deemed us as worthy in society through our production and reproduction, is slowly gaining stride in this tug-of-war of inequality. Women have always proven they are amazing, creative and self-autonomous individuals, regardless of their status as single, married, or divorced. So can we stop making such a big deal about marriage already?!

The Reason Why Why I may be your best gay bff...or not. By: Sergio Meza @oc_boy
I have always been very supportive of my girlfriends in all aspects of their lives. Need a makeover? I am there to help. Perhaps you require a shoulder to cry on or an ear that listens? I am your man. Although I must admit that sometimes I am just nodding my head and pretending like I am listening. It’s not that I don’t care, but trust me, it’s probably not the first time I have heard it. I am also there for the good times, the crazy times, the drunken times…the times that I am sometimes ashamed to recount. Those that I am going to tell you below... It was one of those beautiful So Cal evenings, a Friday to be exact. There was a happy hour after work and with the rough week behind me I was going to make sure I was there. I ended up going with one of my work girlfriends. Actually, she was more than a work girlfriend; we were best friends outside of work too. Until she backstabbed me…that bitch!!! But I will leave that story for another day. So of course we were enjoying the happy hour shots and tacos. After a couple hours, everyone was feeling very loose and happy. My girlfriend was eyeing one of our coworkers, who she had expressed interest in before. They kept looking at each other across the table with their googly eyes and I was almost certain there was some foot action; she had slipped off her heel. A dance party had broken out and I was going around being the social butterfly. I found myself at the bar, ordering yet another drink when I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was my girlfriend. She wanted my car keys, she wanted my backseat to be exact, to make out and hold hands. Just joking, she totally wanted to bone. Well, I was her ride and had she had her own car she would have totally not even hesitated. Plus, at the time I was driving a big SUV (killing the environment) with tinted windows, it was the perfect place. Also, lets be honest, had I made the same request of her she totally would have been down. So I did what every best gay bff would do, nay,

what any American would do, I handed her my car keys and went back to ordering my drink. As she walked away I yelled, “There is a towel in the trunk, put it down please!” During a different instance I had jetted off to Austin with a different girlfriend for SXSW. For those of you that have not been it is basically about 2-3 weeks out of the year when the entire tech and music community descend upon Austin. My girlfriend and I were at a party being thrown in an abandoned power plant. A well know DJ/Producer who has worked with several A-list artists was the main act for the night. Since it was SXSW free booze was flowing left and right. We danced the night way, spilled beer on each other, and had a grand ole time. The whole time, my girlfriend was tweeting with this producer and he invited her to his hotel. We could not believe this, but just
in case, we left the party to go back to the hotel because she wanted to freshen up. The night started to drag on a bit, he had to finish the show before getting back to his room. We started to think this was not going to happen, but then the message came through, “Meet me in my room, and ask for a key at the front desk. I will be there shortly.” We made sure her outfit was on point, she hopped in a cab and off she went to do me proud. One thing, who just lets some random stranger into their room when they are not there? I can vouch for my friend, she wasn’t going to take anything but if it was me I would have been going through his stuff…I am a nosey bitch like that. My friend had a little more restraint and decided to just wait. I ended up falling asleep, she was gone forever, I started to get a little jealous, based on the length of time the sex must have
been amazing. I got woken up about 4 am, all I wanted to do was sleep but my girlfriend was way too excited and was having none of that, no matter how hard I tried to swat her away. She had just had amazing sex with a hot guy; he had tossed her every which way and licked every nook and cranny and she wanted to tell someone. I was right to be jealous. Seems this well-known DJ/Producer is very well endowed, quite talented in bed, and a bit of a freak; everything you can ask for in a man. I can’t tell you who it is, but I am dying to tell you his name. To this day my girlfriend still holds it as her crowning achievement. The point of this whole story is… as a friend, I woke up and listened, or maybe I just nodded and slept with my eyes open. That didn’t matter though, because by now I have heard her tell this story many times. So I will leave it up to
you the reader, would I qualify as your best gay bff? All I ever wanted to do is encourage people to have some good, safe fun. Sometimes you go on a hike, and sometimes you fuck a celebrity. It’s all a win win in my book.
