The history of Port Blair is quite tragic for the fact that the city was used as the site of imprisoning the Indian freedom fighters, when the British were in power in India. Named after the British East India Company Lieutenant Archibald Blair, the city was the site where the British governors built the infamous Cellular Jail between 1896 and 1906. The jail is one of the most infamous jails in Indian history. It is recognized as the site where the prisoners were put through multiple inhuman tortures, and ultimately leading to death. It is for the fact that the place was also called Kala Pani, as the water on the shores often gets soaked with blood. However, at present the jail has been turned into a memorial, housing various relics and testaments exhibiting the life spent by the prisoners and India's struggle for independence.
