Often referred as the festival of lights, this festival is largely celebrated on the occasion when Lord Rama returned to Ayodha after defeating Ravana in his 14 long years of exile. As soon as everyone put on their new cloths they then eat lehiyan (a bitter herbal mixture). Culinary dishes like idli, dosa, and murukku etc. are prepared. The afternoons are basically dedicated to other preparations and performing the rituals. And then finally comes the evening when the joy of the festival is celebrated with great fervor. The nights are then filled with bursting the crackers and some fireworks. It is believed that bursting firecrackers symbolizes the destruction of Narakasur. In addition to these all, there is also the tradition of performing Pithru Tharpanan by certain community members. Another famous Diwali tradition practiced by the natives of Tamil Nadu is to visit the home of the
