Jalandhar: the heart of Punjab Summary: Jalandhar is the oldest city of Punjab and known for its vibrant history across the country. Jalandhar is the oldest city of the Indian state of Punjab and has seen rapid urbanisation in past decade. This historic city has served as the capital of Punjab since the Independence of India in 1947 until the formation of Chandigarh in 1953. The city has been popularly known as Jullundur during the colonial rule.


While you are here, do not miss visiting Phillaur, which is a railway junction on the border line of Jalandhar Cantonment and Ludhiana. Jalandhar city has also served as the main timber market place for the Punjab region during the days before partition. It is situated on the banks of river Satluj. The river Satluj is widely regarded and revered as one of the seven holy rivers of Sapt Sindhu river system. The timber from the city used to be cut from the higher ranges of Shivalik range and then it was thrown into the river Satluj for further transportation and then finally collected in Phillaur for further transportation.


Jalandhar is home to several religious institutions as well. Chief among them include Gurudwara Thra Sahib in Haza Village. You can also visit the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Mandir dedicated to Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is a very widely worshipped hindu Lord and this temple is made and dedicated to him as well. It attracts devotees from around the world due to its magnanimous beauty and the religious charm of this place. If you are here, you can see countless devotees dancing and praising the Lord in the lobby and the courtyard of the temple. It also organises several kirtanas and similar events where devotees gather round and sing together in praise of the Lord. it is one of the most sought after places to visit in Jalandhar.


You can also visit Dera Sach Khand Balan. Also go to the Devi Talab temple which is a renowned temple that attracts large number of devotees on a daily basis. You can also head to the beautiful Imam Nasir Mausoleum and Jama Masjid that is widely visited by Islamic devotees as well as culture vultures visiting this city. One of the most important feature of Jalandhar is that it has served as capital of Punjab since the independence of the country in 1947. It stayed as the capital since the formation of Chandigarh and its establishment as the new capital of Punjab in 1953. Britishers used to call the city by the name Jullundur. Apart from the above mentioned names, jalandhar is also known to be home to several important hindu temples such as Tulsi Mandir and Shiv Mandir. The Gurudwara Talhan Sahib is also a noteworthy place to visit in the city. It is maintained by its devotees who selflessly take care of it. This gurudwara also organises several langars and other such events for the poor just like other gurudwaras.
