In a world more interconnected than ever, yet more isolated… In a world where we are more confident in dealing with mental health, yet confidence is based on tallied likes… In a world of doors which no one sees closing… ATYP exists to provide the keys that unlocked my potential and unstuck me from the mould my generation has been cast in. ATYP is the wardrobe into Narnia, the bridge to Terabithia, the Hogwarts Express, and every other way to get from this world to the one dreamt. MATT FRIEDMAN, 17 ATYPICAL ADVISOR

Welcome to ATYP

International Ambassadors

Australian Theatre for Young People is the national youth theatre company.

Baz Luhrmann As a young teenager coming from the country, I longed for any door that might open the possibility of being in or around the theatre. For me, that door was the Australian Theatre for Young People. I encourage others to do what is necessary, as ATYP cannot survive without considerable effort and support. I invite you all to get involved, and to support this proud company.

We exist to connect young people with the professional theatre industry locally, regionally and nationally. It’s the principle on which the company was founded in 1963. It’s what drives us today. We specialise in integrating professional theatre practice with supportive youth theatre process. We love working with all levels of the arts industry, from the most celebrated national companies to the smallest youth theatres. Our work supports young people from their first theatre experience to the launch of their professional careers.

Rebel Wilson I went to ATYP. I was in eight shows with the company, I did workshops where I learned all about acting and musical theatre. It was such an amazing experience to be surrounded by fellow creative young people! It really inspired me, I learned such great skills. I developed my uniqueness and individualism, and then used those skills to have a professional career. Rose Byrne I first came across ATYP when I was part of an introductory acting workshop. My time at ATYP was a fundamental part of my childhood and teenage years. It was a place of imagination, fun and endless possibility. I adored going every week. ATYP is a sacred and incredible place within our artistic community.

IN 2016 WE BRING A LITTLE OF THE WORLD HOME TO INSPIRE US, AS WE SEND OUR PRODUCTIONS FURTHER AFIELD.

FRASER CORFIELD ARTISTIC DIRECTOR There’s a lot we’re excited about this year. The company continues to blaze a trail developing outstanding plays for young performers, this year presenting four new Australian works and the rock ‘n’ roll musical adaptation of an old favourite. ATYP is sharing sophisticated stories for audiences of all ages. We have productions touring nationally and internationally. The reach of our live-streamed shows continues to grow, broadcasting into schools in every state and territory and reaching out for the first time this year to Europe. Our workshop programs give young people direct access to the country’s leading professional artists. And we continue to unearth the next generation of storytellers through Australia’s most comprehensive development program for young playwrights. A personal joy for me in the 2016 season is the connection between generations of artists. Matt Whittet, who won the ATYP Foundation Commission Award with Fight with All Your Might the Zombies of Tonight, cut his teeth in theatre as a teenager with ATYP. Director of Spring Awakening – The Musical, Mitchell Butel tells wonderful stories about his experiences performing

in plays at ATYP. Celebrated actress and Sugarland playwright Rachael Coopes has been involved in the company for most of her life while emerging director Rob Jago was supported as an emerging professional artist, delivering workshops with the company. Now they all return, established and celebrated in the Australian theatre industry to work with the next generation of theatre makers. If you haven’t been to an ATYP production in the past three years, well... you must. Our main stage season exists to showcase the extraordinary talent of our nation’s young artists. Each production is developed in close consultation with young people, ensuring there is integrity in every situation and relationship. Characters are carefully articulated and beautifully realised. Each story speaks to the experience of growing up and growing older with authenticity that is deeply affecting. In 2016 we bring a little of the world home to inspire us, as we send our productions further afield. ATYP is where young people take their place on the nation’s main stage. We look forward to sharing their achievements with you.

WILL THOMAS ATYPICAL ADVISOR Each step of the way ATYP has revealed a little more about a world I crave to know more about. From my first experience of a holiday workshop, to taking part in weekly classes, to even being in a production, I have always felt welcome. While these experiences were rich and rewarding the thing I have loved most is getting to know more about the world where the real magic happens, behind the curtain. The role of administrators, writers, lighting designers, directors, set and costume designers and the dramaturg have been incredible to learn about. It is a rich tapestry of roles that you can see and experience at ATYP. As a 12 year old boy applying for a position as one of the ‘Atypical’ youth advisors, I was unnerved about the responsibilities that this entailed. Arriving for my first meeting though, the kind and generous Atypicals and staff soon gave me a firm grasp of what I was asked to do. The rewards that I have been able to gain from being part of ATYP’s youth steering committee are near endless. We get to meet the incredible directors and casts of extremely funny, heart-warming and moving

productions, not to mention getting to see all the shows they perform in. We also get to discuss our thoughts on which directions we think the company should explore with the incredible staff of ATYP. I never feel out of place when I am with my fellow Atypicals. For me, one of, if not the most important aspects of being an Atypical advisor is the level of respect given to you and the way you are treated. You will never be talked down to at ATYP. You are treated not as a child, not as an adult, but as a performer contributing to their world and yours. Seize the moment and take the step toward becoming an integral part of the kind, caring and accepting extended community of ATYP!

FROM MY FIRST EXPERIENCE OF A HOLIDAY WORKSHOP, TO TAKING PART IN WEEKLY CLASSES... I HAVE ALWAYS FELT WELCOME.

There are some stories that remain current generation after generation. ATYP On Tour

Sugarland

21

ATYP has a rich touring history that goes back 50 years to 1965 when the fledgling theatre company toured Hullabaloo Belay! by Barbara Vernon around regional NSW for children and their families. This was followed by The Runaway Steamboat touring to the Adelaide Festival starring the young Jacki Weaver. Since that time, ATYP has toured nationally and internationally profiling the work of Australian playwrights, directors, artists and performers. Highlights have included a regional and international tour of All Stops Out by Michael Gow featuring Toni Collette and Rob Carlton (1989 – 1993), Spurboard written by Nick Enright, directed by David Berholdt and featuring Rebel Wilson (2000), Skate by Debra Oswald (2003 – 2005) and Boy Overboard by Patricia Cornelius (2006) both directed by Timothy Jones. It’s been nearly 10 years since ATYP sent a production on a national tour so we’re very excited to hit the road with the award-winning Sugarland in 2016. We can’t wait to connect with new audiences and young people nationwide to show them just what ATYP has to offer. See you on the road.

22.04.16 _ 23.06.16

SUGARLAND Nina is 16 years old, good at school, has a job at the cinema and one of the best singing voices around. But none of that is important. She needs a place to live. Living with her Aunty in an overcrowded house, things aren’t going well, and it’s getting complicated. Erica is 16 and the new girl in town. Her Dad’s in the RAAF and the family’s just moved to Katherine. She’s lived all over Australia and every time she makes somewhere home, she moves again. She’s so used to being an outsider, she’s stopped trying to fit in. The only thing they have in common is the music they listen to. Sometimes that’s enough. Sugarland provides a glimpse into a teenage Australia that feels like a foreign country. This exceptional play will make you laugh and cry, and will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

TRAILER Trailer: A darkly comic play set along the train tracks, about love, family and clocking on at the dream factory. Jed still lives with his mothers, between the beach and the bush, on a train line with a city at either end. Waiting. People say he’s waiting for his father to come back. Jed doesn’t know his father but he’s trailed the Hollywood myth and he knows who his father could be. He’s seen every movie, he’s read all the articles, he’s watched all the trailers. Finding his dad could fill the sinkhole in Jed’s psyche. The truth is, it’s hard having a star for a dad, when you’re completely ordinary. Unless of course, that’s not the truth. And that could be harder. Trailer is a brand new play by NSW Premier’s Award-winning playwright Vanessa Bates, and is supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW, as well as Wyong Shire Council and The Art House, Wyong. BASSETT Time: 2011. Place: Wootton Bassett School (Wiltshire, England). At Wootton Bassett School the casual teacher has done a runner and locked the pupils in their classroom. Dean needs the toilet, Aimee needs a coffee, Amid needs to pray, and Leo….well Leo, really, really wants to escape. Outside, only yards from their confinement, a repatriation of fallen British soldiers is happening along the high street, as it has over a hundred times before through this quiet Wiltshire town. But this one is more personal than most. As factions form and secrets are revealed, maybe Leo is not the only one who’ll want to get away. Bassett is an exhilarating and startling snapshot of a generation who have inherited a world at war, who, as they grow older, are starting to ask questions about their conflicts, their country and themselves.

1995. Following the sell-out success of Pronoun in 2014, Bittersweet Productions will again participate in the ATYP Cameo season to present six performances of this exciting and dynamic new play where the audience are compelled to confront conflict and its impact upon us all.

Bassett is a part of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s Connections program and will be performed at ATYP Studio 1 from 15 – 19 June 2016. Connections’ plays are commissioned for and about young people from some of the best contemporary playwrights. ATYP FOUNDATION COMMISSION Launched in 2003 as part of the company’s 40th birthday celebration, the ATYP Foundation was created to develop and manage a capital fund that will ensure the theatre company’s future and enable it to continue to raise the national expectation of what theatre with young people can achieve. In 2010, the Foundation launched a program to commission new works to be performed by young people. In 2012, the ATYP Foundation Commission Award was established to build a canon of new works specifically for young people 10 – 13 years. This extremely successful initiative has seen seven new works written or adapted for the stage. All plays have been published by Playlab and performed by many schools nationwide. The Foundation has proudly supported the work of these ATYP productions: Commission, 2011 Ishmael and the Return of the Dugongs Adapted by playwright Jo Turner from the novel by Michael Gerard Bauer.

Commission, 2012 Max Remy Super Spy Adapted by playwright Jo Turner, from the bestselling novels by Deborah Abela. Co-commission (with Tantrum Theatre), 2012 Grounded by Alana Valentine. SUPPORT ATYP exists thanks to our committed and loyal community of supporters and donors. Many people are surprised to learn government funding makes up only a fraction of our income (less than 20%). While we earn much of what we need through box office and workshops it is our donors that enable us to remain a world-leading theatre company. Our daughter did a number of holiday courses and we were so impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism of ATYP that we decided to see a few productions... We were overwhelmed by the energy, vibrancy and freshness of the productions and really felt that ATYP was such a healthy and inspiring nursery for the performers, writers and artists of the future. SHARLENE DADD, OPTIMISTE WINES OF MUDGEE

Our community of supporters make all our programs possible. Thanks to them we are able to stage critically acclaimed productions, launch the careers of tomorrow’s artistic leaders, support teachers in our most disadvantaged schools, purchase equipment, provide mentorships and ensure 10% of all our workshop places can be awarded as scholarships to people in need. Our donors are the life-blood of our company.

There are many ways you can support ATYP, both financially and in kind. All support grows our community and strengthens our company. Donate Your donation, no matter the size, helps us continue to provide world class drama programs to young people aged 4 to 26. Parents’ Committee The ATYP Parents’ Committee provides feedback on our programs, assists with fundraising and organises events that bring people closer to the company. If you have young people who are a part of ATYP and you would like to get involved please contact us. Volunteer ATYP is always grateful for volunteers. From helping out in the office to bumping-in shows and supporting the end of semester cake stalls, the gift of time is always appreciated. Alumni In 2016 we are launching a series of cast and crew reunions to celebrate productions across the last 30 years. We look forward to hearing some great stories at these gatherings.

THE ATYP PRODUCERS’ CIRCLE The Producers’ Circle draws together a community of benefactors who help make our performance season possible each year. Being part of the Producers’ Circle means you play a key role in nurturing the careers of the next generation of Australia’s professional artists. Every year ATYP launches the careers of young people who go on to be amongst our nation’s leading playwrights, actors and designers. Our alumni roll reads like a who’s who of Australian theatre and film and includes Nicole Kidman, Baz Luhrmann, Rebel Wilson, Rose Byrne, Michael Gow, Tommy Murphy, Chris Lilley, Mitchell Butel, Blazey Best, Rob Carlton and Abbie Cornish amongst many others. The ATYP main stage season places our young artists on the national stage. The Producers’ Circle makes that season possible. Through a donation of $5,000 this group help us stage the plays that are reimagining theatre for young Australians.

As part of the Producers’ Circle, donors are acknowledged in the following ways, with: → Opening Night invitations to every show in the ATYP season; → opportunities to go behind the scenes, from first rehearsal to Opening Night; → honour Rolls in ATYP publications including production programs and online; and → updates on the achievements of the season and the opportunities that are obtained by the young artists that participated in it. We extend our thanks to the 2015 Producers’ Circle for their support in producing what was a critically acclaimed season.
