WELCOME TO WINTER AT ATYP! I am thrilled to be able to launch ATYP’s Winter Holiday Program for 2016. This winter, our juniors will be excited to hear the circus is coming to town! Along with it, the opportunity to explore the world of Roald Dahl, return to the Land of Oz, delve into some classic musicals and so much more. Our senior students can get in front or behind the camera with our short film making course or screen acting class. Perhaps you want to get into theatremaking with our Rebel Wilson scholarship winner Yve Blake, or focus on your investigative scene work? It is such an exciting time to be involved in ATYP. Our shows are getting rave reviews, our community is as strong as ever, and many of the industry’s most exciting, award-winning professionals are ready and willing to share their skills and experiences with you all. Roll Up! Roll Up! Roll up! Roll up! The Circus is in town! But there’s a problem… we’ve lost our ringmasters and performers! The show must go on, so we need your help! What will you be – the ringmaster, a plate twirler, trapeze artist, lion tamer, or maybe even the lion? Spend the week learning all about the circus, developing characters and creating a story, and bring all your skills together to produce The Greatest Show on Earth right here on The Wharf!

How to Hide an Alien Camping out with your friends one night you all discover the unthinkable – a lost alien who is scared and needs to find his way home! What will you all do? You want to help but no one else can know about him or they’ll take him away! Investigate themes of home, teamwork, and together work out how to keep this alien safe. Learn skills in characterisation, devising and storytelling, and by the end of the week you will have devised a show that is sure to captivate your family and friends.

We Will Survive
Matilda and the Big Friendly Peach Factory Get inspired by some of this author’s most famous tales (Matilda, The Witches, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and more), this winter we will be creating our own magical and imaginative world. We’ll begin with his books (and musical), and then using our powers of improvisation and devising, we will create our own characters, worlds and stories to share with our audience at the end of the week.

How did we end up here? Where is everybody else? Something very strange is going on and we can only look to ourselves to survive! Explore a post-apocalyptic world and decide what it might look like. Investigate the theme of survival, learn how to create tension, and discover characterisation and storytelling techniques. By the end of the week use all of these skills to create a show for your family and friends.

Musical Theatre – From Rags to Riches
TOP SECRET! Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Spend a week cracking codes, writing letters in invisible ink, moving about undetected, and collecting top-secret material. Of course, every famous spy needs to bring down a famous villain who is out to conquer the world! Explore the theme of secrecy, come up with your own agent name and number, uncover secret hideouts and create whacky gadgets. Taking inspiration from shows such as Spy Kids, Pink Panther and Get Smart, devise, write and perform a show ready to premiere to your friends and family at the end of the week.

Explore the archetypal rags to riches stories of some of our favourite musicals. Matilda, Annie and of course Oliver. What common traits do these musicals have? What types of characters are you drawn to? Spend a week learning skills in voice, characterisation and storytelling. Use the songs of these great musicals as inspiration to create your own story, and perform a moving and fun piece for your family and friends at the end of the week.

Short Film – The Secret
Screen Acting
Filmmaking is becoming ever more accessible and popular. These holidays, we are devising around the theme of The Secret. Learn how to create tension and suspense through camera techniques, and work both in front and behind the camera. There are cafes, alleyways, theatres – what will you write and where will you create your masterpiece? During the week you will scout locations, write your own script and shot list based on what you find, and direct and perform in your own short film.

Explore the difference between acting for the stage and the screen. Learn how so much can be said in just a look, discover techniques that can give you the edge in giving a more truthful performance, learn how stage can help screen acting and screen can help stage acting. Using modern scripts you’ll put your new skills into practice by filming yourself and analysing your work as you watch it back. At the end of the week perform your scenes live for your family and friends!

Weekend Workshop: Treasure Hunters
Skitting Around From Laurel & Hardy, Monty Python, The Goonies, Little Britain, Saturday Night Live, all the way through to The Chaser, sketch comedy has been making us laugh forever. Get the edge you need in comedy, learn to write your own original sketch, play with improvisation techniques, physical comedy and a whole lot more. Have your friends and family rolling in the aisles at the end of the week with a variety of sketches and learn the form that has produced the likes of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and of course ATYP alumni Rebel Wilson and Chris Lilley.

All aboard and set sail for the high seas because we are on a treasure hunt! Spend two fun days exploring islands, drawing maps, and of course collecting treasure. Enjoy hearing stories of pirates, mermaids and much more. Let our youngest actors spend the weekend expanding their imaginations, making craft and new friends. On the last day there will be a showing of the adventures they have been up to!

The Baker’s Bread Have you been down to the bakery lately? There’s something going on. The bread and sweets are amazing, but people are different afterwards. What are the baker’s special ingredients and what affect is his food having on the town? Spend a week creating your own village of people, learn storytelling and characterisation techniques, and create a fable to present to your family and friends at the end of the week.

A Shipwrecked Story Oh I do love to be beside the sea side, oh I do love to be beside the – Oh no what’s that?! A huge wave has shipwrecked you and your crewmates onto a mysterious island that no one has been to before! On this island you discover a cave full of rock paintings – clues to how you can survive and how to get to safety. Spend a week exploring and creating a new world, and with your friends devise a show to perform at the end of the program.

The Abandoned House
Strap yourself in as you get thrown into a tornado that takes you back to the land of Oz. Revisit some of your favourite characters such as Scarecrow, Tin Man, the Munchkins or perhaps even Dorothy herself. Why have you had to go back, and what problems need fixing in the Emerald City this time? Enjoy developing story telling skills, improvisation and characterisation techniques and create a show sure to transport your family and friends at the end of the week.

Crazy Castles
Be Inspired by Shaun Tan
Ever wanted to play the part of a King or Queen? Perhaps you’ve wanted to be a Knight or the Court Jester? Here’s your chance but there is a catch – this castle is not your average castle. This castle just happens to be a little bit crazy. During the week you will see a production of The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark at the Sydney Theatre Company. Learn storytelling techniques, create crazy characters and with your class produce a performance sure to have your family and friends giggling all the way home.

Spend the week learning about the work of Australia’s own Shaun Tan. His amazing picture books such as The Arrival, Tales from Outer Suburbia and the Oscar winning short film The Lost Thing have an ability to move audiences and make them see the world through a different lens. Discover the common themes throughout his work. Learn devising skills, character creation and create a play inspired by the work of this great Australian artist.

A Case of Deja vu!
Voice and Accents
What if you knew what was coming before it actually happened? Even though you’ve never been here before it feels like you have. It’s like you’re trapped in a time warp destined to see the same events happen again, and again, and again. Use this week to explore themes of time travel, repetition and sliding doors. Learn storytelling and characterisation techniques to create an amazing show for your family and friends at the end of the week.

These sessions will explore vocal technique, confidence and range, as well as accent training. Students will begin to free and strengthen their voices by finding the connection between voice, the body and emotion. There will also be special attention paid to vocal warm ups, characterisation through vocal ability and clear and concise delivery.

What clues did Alex leave behind? What are the conspiracy theories going around school? Spend a week exploring the mystery genre and themes of loss, rumours and urban myths. At the end of the week you will have an intriguing showing for your family and friends.

Rebel Wilson Theatremaker Scholarship winner Yve Blake is creating a new show all about what it truly feels like to be a teenage girl in 2016. What’s old, what’s new, what’s excellent about it, and what’s awks. The key ingredients of this show will be true stories, playlists, and the internet. This one-off workshop will be a chance to learn about a professional artistic devising process, and develop a toolkit of musthave skills in storytelling and collaboration. At the end of the week you’ll present a showing of your work. Places for this workshop are strictly limited, and are available to girls only

Investigative Scene Work This course takes you all the way from a first script read, to getting up on the floor and performing. Discover the characterisation and emotional clues the playwright has placed in the script, and get an insight into how professional actors work in a rehearsal room. Explore blocking, and new acting techniques to help maximise your scene. At the end of the week you will present your rehearsed scenes for your family and friends.
