FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

EDUCATION

2022

This year ATYP is asking teachers and students to take a fresh look at your national youth theatre company. 2022 is a year of fundamental change. In the best way. ATYP has long established that young artists can deliver extraordinary outcomes. We have the awards and alumni to prove it. In 2022 we are offering Australian audiences a fully professional season of works driven by young characters, played by young actors, working with leading professionals. We are putting young people on a brand new stage – a stage where Australians of all ages come together to spotlight what’s happening in young people’s lives.

I need to warn you though, these are not plays for children. They are funny, poignant, joyous, heartbreaking and bold…but they are not always polite, they are rarely well behaved, and they will make people blush. Our season of extraordinary theatre is supported by one of the country’s most impressive Education programs. From our home on Sydney Harbour to our online digital classrooms ATYP On Demand and ATYP On Demand Plus, we will work with you to inspire your students, whatever their age, wherever you are in Australia. Fraser Corfield Artistic Director

What does this mean for you? It means that if you are looking for theatre that speaks to a teenage audience without any compromise on artistic excellence, we’re the company for you. If you’re looking for stories that allow your students to see themselves or their peers reflected on stage, we are the company for you.

FROM THE HEAD OF LEARNING

As ATYP moves into our new home at Pier 2/3, we start a new and exciting chapter. I’m thrilled to introduce the wonderful Education program we have created to sit at the heart of ATYP’s 2022 Season. Our series of in-person and digital programs, Teacher Professional Development with Industry Specialists, and Productions will excite and engage teachers and students Australia-wide. New Education programs include Intersection Festival, which gives students and teachers the opportunity to work with ATYP to present new Australian stories. Your students perform and analyse new short plays, specifically written for young people to be showcased at the annual Intersection Festival, held in The Rebel Theatre at Pier 2/3. We’re delighted to once again offer Theatre Flat-Pack, where we co-produce an ATYP play with you at your school. An industry theatre director works with you and your students on your choice of play, supporting you every step of the way, from auditions to rehearsals to opening night.

ATYP

EDUCATION

ATYP also reginites our popular Student Workshop program for 2022. These workshops can be delivered at your school, in one of our new workshop studios at Pier 2/3, or online via Zoom, wherever you are in Australia. We have a list of popular theatre and drama workshops as well as customised workshops for your students. In 2022, our free ATYP On Demand digital platform will include new streamed productions and workshops. Make sure you’re subscribed as new content is added throughout the year. This includes a Director’s Series presented by Fraser Corfield, available for you and your students in Term 1.

An exciting part of our 2022 program is our school performances in our new Rebel Theatre at Pier 2/3, with productions of The Deb, The Resistance and Past the Shallows. Give your students a wonderful experience with these plays created for young people. Please contact our Education team about any of the in-person and digital programs on offer for 2022. We can’t wait to engage with you online, collaborate with your school, show you around our fabulous new workshop studios and welcome you to your seat at The Rebel Theatre. Jacqui Cowell Head of Learning

ATYP On Demand Plus, our national digital education platform, provides complete units of work for primary teachers linked to areas of the curriculum, taught through drama and literacy exercises with weekly instructional videos. To enquire about bringing ATYP On Demand Plus to your school, please fill in the online form or email edbookings@atyp.com.au “The material itself was really great quality...It helped our students to engage with often very abstract concepts in that part of the curriculum, but turned them into very concrete physical experiences which helped them to engage with it in a much better and much deeper way. Things they remember and keep talking about. It’s wonderful to find a resource that has everything involved. You don’t have to go looking for anything extra.” Jane Vaughan, Classroom Teacher/RFF Railway Town Public School, Broken Hill, NSW

“We found the unit really fantastic for our class. It’s made it much more interactive and enjoyable for the kids – so that they’re actually learning but they don’t even realise that they’re learning. When it’s fun they will actually engage, and they will actually take part and listen, and hopefully learn...And it’s really good for us teachers to have something different to offer.” Vanessa Wallace, Primary Teacher, St Martin de Porres Primary School, NSW “On Demand [Plus] has challenged us as a team to think outside of our ‘normal’ teaching delivery strategies and become more comfortable stepping away from the classroom desks. The professional development helps to give teachers the confidence to deliver curriculum with a Drama focus. It ensures that teachers are equipped with the skills to deliver the program effectively and are able to adapt the activities to other areas of the curriculum.” Anna Stanton, Primary Teacher, Winthrop Primary School, WA

THE DEB Written by Hannah Reilly Music by Megan Washington Lyrics by Megan Washington & Hannah Reilly Story by Hannah Reilly & Megan Washington

For the very first time… High school outcast and whimsical mega-dork Taylah longs to be the princess in her own fairy tale. Which isn’t easy in Dunburn – a drought-stricken Aussie town struggling for survival, where cool girls and footy hunks lead the pack. But when her hyper-woke, inner-city cousin Maeve comes to stay, the pair joins forces on a quest to make their mark on the best night of the year: the town’s annual Debutante Ball. In their search for social redemption and the spotlight, chaos ensues – along with a whole lot of fake tan, lace, and diamante tiaras for ya up-do. Conceived and co-directed by the hilarious Hannah Reilly (Winner of the 2019 Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission) with original music by multi-ARIA Award-winning Megan Washington, The Deb is a heart-warming and uproarious coming-of-age story about friendship, courage and the beauty of coming out as yourself. Don’t miss the world-premiere of what will no doubt join Muriel’s Wedding and FANGIRLS in the ranks of beloved Australian stage musicals. You’ve got a ball? Well here’s ya belle!

M.ROCK by Lachlan Philpott When I’m up there all I hear is YES and it feels bloody good!

Tracey is 18 and a little impulsive. She’s meant to start a nursing degree in March, but right now she just wants to dance all night. So she heads off on a European holiday (remember those?), clutching the lucky rabbit’s foot her grandmother gave her. Mabel is your typical grandmother. She plays piano for the players and knits for the Africa appeal. But when Tracey skips her flight home and doesn’t get in touch, Mabel leaves her stable life to go find her. So what if she’s never been further than Canberra? She ends up in Berlin, and before long she’s over her jetlag, clubbing until sunrise with people who seize life with both hands. As the nights go on, Tracey and Mabel keep missing each other, but they’re finding themselves. After burning the house down in our original 2014 sell-out co-production with STC, Valerie Bader will shine brighter than a mirrorball as Mabel in this lifeaffirming play by Lachlan Philpott, directed by Fraser Corfield. For the grandparents and the grandkids, the young and the young at heart, see M.Rock and escape back to a time where you can hop on a plane, discover the world, kiss a stranger and lose yourself on a heaving dance floor.

A PLAY WITH MUSIC

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE:

by Anthony Burgess

Destruction is our ode to joy. Alex and his teenage gang revel in danger, mayhem and a bit o’ the ol’ in-out-in-out, ideally with Beethoven blasting in their ears. Communicating in a strange slang dialect, they stalk the streets wreaking havoc without consequences — until a drug-fuelled night of fun ends in murder, and Alex is finally busted and banged up. He’s given a choice: be brainwashed into good citizenship and set free, or face a lifetime inside. But can “goodness” really exist when you’re given no other choice? And what happens when Alex is released back into the society he once terrorised? Based on his provocative 1962 novella A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess’ play with music is a searing collection of Shakespearean prose and bad behaviour that tackles timeless questions about free will, adolescence, humanity’s capacity for violence, and the power of the state. 50 years after Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film adaptation exploded into cinemas, ATYP’s Artistic Director Fraser Corfield reimagines everyone’s favourite dystopian vision of misspent youth for a 2022 audience. Grab your droogs, it’s time to gooly down to The Rebel to see what piques your shilarny. You’re bezoomny if ya miss it!

PAST THE SHALLOWS by Favel Parrett adapted by Julian Larnach A co-production with Archipelago Productions

Keep your eyes on the water. Harry and Miles live with their father, an abalone diver, on the wild and beautiful south coast of Tasmania. With their mum dead and their alcoholic father largely absent, they look after each other as best they can. Over a school holiday while Miles works on the boat, Harry begins an unlikely friendship that will upset the delicate balance holding this unpredictable world together. Adapted by playwright Julian Larnach from Favel Parrett’s award-winning debut novel, Past the Shallows is an ode to brotherhood and a heartwrenching, lyrical exploration of mortality, family secrets and the capacity for both brutality and tenderness within contemporary masculinity. Acclaimed director Ben Winspear directs a powerhouse cast of three young actors playing multiple roles in our final production of the year. Let yourself be swept away on the tide of this compelling and deeply poignant story that will stay with you long after the lights come up.
