FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

In 2023, ATYP celebrates a milestone. The national youth theatre company celebrates its 60th birthday! We are the oldest theatre company dedicated to young people in Australia and one of the longest-running in the world.

So what does that mean for you? Well… it means you are in safe hands with ATYP.

Whether you are bringing your students to see a show or inviting our Teaching Artists into your school, we understand how to link learning with inspiration. We’re very good at it, and so we should be – we’ve been doing it for a very long time.

For six decades, ATYP has been connecting young people and teachers with Australia’s leading professional artists. Our work has changed the way we create theatre for children and young people in this country and has launched careers for some of Australia’s most famous faces. ATYP combines professional theatre processes with inclusive, supportive, child-centred learning practices. In the process, we

create extraordinary theatre and workshop experiences.

The ATYP Foundation Commission plays, published by Playlab Theatre, sell more than 3,000 copies to schools across the country every year. Our series of short plays for the classroom contained in The Voices Project and Intersection collections, available through Currency Press, sell more than 1,000 copies to schools every year.

ATYP’s major productions have won every major Australian theatre award for Artistic Excellence. This year The Guardian newspaper listed ‘The 15 greatest Australian musicals, on stage and screen’ … and two of them were commissioned and developed by ATYP (FANGIRLS and The Deb)

Contact Jacqui Cowell and our Education team to discuss how the national youth theatre company can support you to inspire the next generation of artists and audiences.

FROM THE HEAD OF LEARNING

I’m thrilled to introduce ATYP’s exciting 2023 Education program – one we have crafted in response to conversations with teachers and students around what has had the most impact.

As we move into our second year at our new home in Pier 2/3, we are seeing a huge period of growth in our national education programs. This series of in-person and digital offerings and unique theatre experiences for schools will excite and engage teachers and students Australia-wide.

We’re delighted to once again offer Theatre Flat-Pack, where we co-produce an ATYP play with you at your school. An industry theatre director works with you and your students on your choice of play, supporting you every step of the way from auditions, to rehearsals, to opening night. After a series of successful Theatre Flat-Pack programs in schools in 2022, we’re excited to already be planning Theatre Flat-Pack with teachers for 2023.

After a successful pilot year, Intersection Festival is back by popular demand, giving teachers

and students the opportunity to work with ATYP to present new Australian stories. Your students will work on and perform new short plays, specifically written for young people, to be showcased at the annual Intersection Festival at The Rebel Theatre in Pier 2/3.

We continue to offer our acclaimed Student Workshop program for 2023. These workshops can be delivered at your school, in one of our new workshop studios at Pier 2/3, or online via Zoom to wherever you are in Australia. We have a list of renowned theatre and drama workshops available for your students and can tailor a workshop that suits your needs.

In 2023, our free ATYP On Demand digital platform will have new streamed productions and workshops. Make sure you’re subscribed as new content is added throughout the year. This includes a Director’s Series presented by Fraser Corfield and other ATYP creatives.

ATYP On Demand Plus, our national digital education platform, provides complete units

of work and video resources for primary teachers linked to areas of the curriculum, taught through drama and literacy exercises. There are six complete units of work for teachers including First Nations Connections (History), Waves of Migration (History), Bringing Poetry Alive (English) and Our Changing Environment (Science).

An exciting part of our 2023 program is school performances in the Rebel Theatre, with productions of The Resistance and CUSP. Give your students an inspiring theatre experience with plays created specifically for young people and schools.

Please contact our Education team about any of the in-person and digital programs on offer for 2023. We can’t wait to engage with you online, collaborate with your school, show you around our fabulous new workshop studios, and welcome you to your seat at The Rebel Theatre.

In 2023, ATYP is pleased to offer an immersive Work Experience program at our home in Pier 2/3. Students will join the ATYP team for an entire week to find out just what it takes to run a professional theatre company. Students in Year 10 or Year 11 who have an interest in Drama or Entertainment are invited to apply to be one of 16 students taking part in this unique experience.

During Work Experience, students will take part in practical sessions around acting, directing, design, marketing, development, producing, education, and writing to explore the day-to-day operations of a theatre company. They will also work in groups throughout the week on a project that they will present to ATYP staff; a pitch for a show they would like to put on as their newly formed ‘theatre company’.

Entry by application only. Students in regional/interstate schools are encouraged to apply, however, ATYP is unable to cover travel and accommodation costs.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Dates: Term 3, Week 7 Monday 28 August – Friday 1 September, 2023

Work Experience applications open in March 2023 via the ATYP website.

“The best thing was meeting a bunch of theatre-lovers with whom we could all share our unique love for theatre. In doing this, we met professional creatives giving insights into all sorts of subsets of theatre – we were immersed into their craft (directing, designing, acting, producing, dramaturgy). I hope that one day I can inspire people everyday through theatre and experiences like those provided to use through work experience.” Marc De Iorio, St Aloysius College 2022 Work Experience Student

“The material itself was really great quality...It helped our students to engage with often very abstract concepts in that part of the curriculum, but turned them into very concrete physical experiences which helped them to engage with it in a much better and much deeper way. Things they remember and keep talking about. It’s wonderful to find a resource that has everything involved. You don’t have to go looking for anything extra.” Jane Vaughan, Railway Town Public School, Broken Hill, NSW

THE RESISTANCE

A co-production with Auckland Theatre Company

RISE UP!

Marlee’s running late, Hayden is seeking justice, Miro has his head in the clouds and Pepper just wants to blow things up. With this group in charge, it’s no wonder the rally is going nowhere fast. CUSP

How do you move into the future, when your past keeps dragging you backwards?

Elvis wants Rosie. Rosie wants to escape. Maddie doesn’t know what the hell she wants, but it sure isn’t this.

While Rosie balances the needs of her community with her own life dreams, Elvis juggles a life of crime with a tougher path into the straight-and-narrow, and Maddie faces life as a single parent unless she aborts her unborn child.

CUSP juxtaposes the Northern Territory’s vast Top End landscape with the turbulent lives of three emerging adults as they swim against the tide of irrevocable change. Balancing choice versus fate in a world where, as Elvis observes, “Some people just get better choices than others.”
