Pier 2/3 — at last.

WELCOME

In 2022, after lengthy negotiation with successive NSW Governments, ATYP will now have its own permanent home. Positioned alongside our colleagues in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, ATYP, as one of Australia’s oldest and most significant theatre companies, will operate from a fully professional purpose-built theatre, dedicated rehearsal rooms and offices to house ATYP’s students, artists and dedicated staff. Importantly, ATYP’s inaugural season in The Rebel Theatre, so named after generous Ambassador and immensely talented alumna Rebel Wilson, will commence with an ensemble piece that showcases leading Australian talent across the age range in which ATYP specialises. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have generously donated to ATYP’s fundraising efforts. In preparation for the move to Pier 2/3, ATYP set itself an enormous challenge to raise $2.6million, and I would like to personally thank major donors Rebel Wilson, Antoinette (Popsy) Albert, Susie & Martin Dickson AM, The Neilson Foundation, and Edward Simpson, along with all those who have “bought a seat” in our theatre. I am pleased to report that, at the time of writing, we are very close to reaching that goal.

I acknowledge and am grateful for the personal support of NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin, and the NSW Government through Create NSW, through which we have secured both operational and project funding as well as COVID-19 recovery funds to see us through to this historic event. Additionally, I would like to extend our gratitude to the Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher for the vital lifeline extended to ATYP through the RISE funding initiative, and the number of trusts and foundations, listed in this brochure, for their ongoing support of ATYP.

contracts and legal complexities which would have overwhelmed a lesser soul. I also thank all the staff members whose practical knowledge and suggestions played such a role in bringing about the final shape of our complex, and all our partners in the areas of architecture, construction, design, interiors and fit-out.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Artistic Director/ CEO, Fraser Corfield, and key Board members who have kept the ship on course through difficult seas and have never lost sight of the fact that 2022 is going to be something extra special. In particular Deputy Chair, Janine Lapworth, has lived with and resolved

Exciting times ahead — I invite you all to join us.

We have been given an extraordinary opportunity to showcase ATYP at its very best. We will rise to make the best of that opportunity and meet all the challenges which come with it.

A new era for youth theatre in Australia.

WELCOME

So often in theatre we have to make positive changes incrementally, leveraging small developments with limited resources to edge the company forward. Sure, we can have a bold vision, but we need a series of small methodical steps to realise it.

want to go to the theatre with a friend, a parent, a grandparent or all of the above. They are plays for an audience that wants to see young talent in sophisticated stories that make us laugh, make us think, make us feel a connection across many generations.

This year we launch a vision that has been a decade in the making. Since 2010, ATYP has been producing at least one show in every season that features young artists performing in fully professional productions. These shows have won critical acclaim and toured across Australia and internationally. They have entertained tens of thousands of people and inspired new generations of artists and audiences. In the process, the company has won Helpmann, AWGIE, Sidney Myer, and Sydney Theatre Awards for artistic excellence.

I need to warn you though, these are not plays for children. They are funny, cheeky, joyous, heartbreaking and bold…but they are not always polite, they are rarely well behaved and they can make you blush.

In 2022 we offer you a world-first — a season of fully professional youth theatre productions. Each play in the season gives us the experiences of young people, performed by extraordinary young artists, working in partnership with industry leaders. Australia’s oldest youth theatre company is the country’s newest professional theatre company. So who are these shows for? They are for audiences aged 13 and above. These are productions for people that

We are premiering a new Australian musical, The Deb, by the exceptionally talented (and very funny) Hannah Reilly and Megan Washington. I’m thrilled to be bringing back one of our most successful productions, the intergenerational dance party that is M.Rock by Lachlan Philpott, featuring the magnificent Valerie Bader. There’s a co-production with New Zealand’s Auckland Theatre Company presenting the world premiere of The Resistance by Kip Chapman. I am getting to revisit the contemporary classic that dissects teenage crime and punishment in A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music by Anthony Burgess. Then we finish the year with Favel Parrett’s haunting Tasmanian novel Past the Shallows, adapted for the stage by Julian Larnach and presented in partnership with Tasmania's Archipelago Productions.

ATYP’s new home in the iconic Walsh Bay Arts Precinct offers a destination for youth theatre in Australia. From our new home, we are very proud to be connecting with theatre companies, schools, and communities across the country. In addition to the season of mainstage works, we continue to host weekly and school holiday programs for young people wanting to work with leading professional artists. Our digital classroom, ATYP On Demand, provides free access to ATYP productions and accompanying teaching resources to teachers, school and university students around the country, while On Demand Plus gives primary school teachers the opportunity to use drama to teach areas of the core curriculum. This year we ask all Australians to have a fresh look at your national youth theatre company as we take our place amongst Australia’s flagship companies. In the shadow of the harbour bridge, on a pier over the land and waters of the Gadigal people, we create space for young people to take the stage and inspire all Australians. We look forward to welcoming you to our new home in 2022. Fraser Corfield, Artistic Director

WELCOME

I first became interested in acting to get over my own shyness. At age 19, I signed up to weekly acting classes at ATYP. I remember travelling down to The Wharf and just loving being part of a community of creative individuals. It was a refreshing break from law school and I’d secretly hoped that my career would go more in an entertainment direction. I loved that first term so much, and by the end of 1999 I had performed in an ATYP original musical Beyond the Game and was cast in Nick Enright’s Spurboard, a Sydney Theatre Company and ATYP coproduction. The following year I appeared in ATYP’s production of Stephen Sewell’s Birds at the Sydney Opera House. Not fitting the mould of a ‘young starlet’, suddenly there I was performing on Sydney’s top stages, working with some of our best playwrights, and the opportunities were all made possible through ATYP.

I’m so happy I get this opportunity to give back to ATYP and the community through the Capital Campaign and the commission of The Deb. And you can give too. Buy tickets to the amazing 2022 productions, send your kids to ATYP or apply for their scholarships. Get involved in this great Australian company whose mission is all about helping young people from all walks of life. See you guys there! Rebel Wilson, ATYP Alumna

This is why I want as many young people in Australia as possible to be given access to the creative arts. I hope The Rebel Theatre is a place where the new generations of Aussie talent get to shine. They’ll get to write and create and perform for audiences. And I hope they crush it.

For the very first time…

The Deb

Principal production partner

You've got a ball? Well here's ya belle! High school outcast and whimsical mega-dork Taylah longs to be the princess in her own fairy tale. Which isn’t easy in Dunburn — a drought-stricken Aussie town struggling for survival, where cool girls and footy hunks lead the pack. But when her hyper-woke, inner-city cousin Maeve comes to stay, the pair join forces on a quest to make their mark on the best night of the year: the town’s annual Debutante Ball. In their search for social redemption and the spotlight, chaos ensues — along with a whole lot of fake tan, lace, and diamante tiaras for ya up-do. Conceived and co-directed by the hilarious Hannah Reilly with original music by multi-ARIA Award-winning musician and songwriter Megan Washington, The Deb is a heart-warming and uproarious coming-of-age story about friendship, courage, and the beauty of coming out as yourself. Don’t miss the world-premiere of what will no doubt join Muriel’s Wedding and FANGIRLS in the ranks of beloved Australian musicals. A co-production with Camp Sugar Productions

When I’m up there all I hear is YES and it feels bloody good! Tracey is 18 and a little impulsive. She’s meant to start a nursing degree in March, but right now she just wants to dance all night. So she heads off on a European holiday (remember those?), clutching the lucky rabbit’s foot her grandmother gave her. Mabel is your typical grandmother. She plays piano for The Players and knits for the Africa appeal. But when Tracey skips her flight home and doesn’t get in touch, Mabel leaves her stable life to go find her. So what if she’s never been further than Canberra? She ends up in Berlin, and before long she’s over her jetlag, clubbing until sunrise with people who seize life with both hands. As the nights go on, Tracey and Mabel keep missing each other, but they’re finding themselves. After burning the house down in our original 2014 sell-out co-production with Sydney Theatre Company, Valerie Bader will shine brighter than a mirrorball as Mabel in this life-affirming play by Lachlan Philpott. Whether you’re a grandparent or a grandkid, young or simply young at heart, Fraser Corfield’s delightful production will make you glad you put on your pearls. The smash-hit show returns! The Resistance by Kip Chapman

Marlee’s running late, Hayden is seeking justice, Miro has his head in the clouds and Pepper just wants to blow things up. With this group in charge, it’s no wonder the rally is going nowhere fast. But when Marlee is unexpectedly thrust into the limelight, it suddenly feels as if the whole country is watching. Could these young people maybe save the world? Set in the arena of the climate justice movement and its mobilisation on social media, The Resistance is a giant protest rally exploring the power of friendship, the pain of ambition, and the deliciousness of potato chips. Interactive theatre-maker Kip Chapman (APOLLO 13: Mission Control) takes over ATYP’s brand new Rebel Theatre and immediately destroys the fourth wall, welcoming the audience in on the action. You are personally invited — in fact, you’re downright encouraged — to jump into this wholehearted theatrical celebration of the power of collective action. And trust us… a lot can happen in 90 minutes. Put your hand up if you’re ready to save the world!

SEASON

Destruction is our ode to joy. Alex and his teenage gang revel in danger, mayhem and a bit o’ the ol’ in-out-in-out, ideally with Beethoven blasting in their ears. Communicating in a strange slang dialect, they stalk the streets wreaking havoc without consequences — until a drug-fuelled night of fun ends in murder, and Alex is finally busted and banged up. He’s given a choice: be brainwashed into good citizenship and set free, or face a lifetime inside. But can “goodness” really exist when you’re given no other choice? And what happens when Alex is released back into the society he once terrorised? Based on his provocative 1962 novella A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess’ play with music is a searing collection of Shakespearean prose and bad behaviour that tackles timeless questions about free will, adolescence, humanity’s capacity for violence, and the power of the state. 50 years after Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film adaptation exploded into cinemas, ATYP’s Artistic Director Fraser Corfield reimagines everyone’s favourite dystopian vision of misspent youth for a 2022 audience. Harry and Miles live with their father, an abalone diver, on the wild and beautiful south coast of Tasmania. With their father largely absent, they look after each other as best they can. Over a school holiday while Miles works on the boat, Harry begins an unlikely friendship that will upset the delicate balance holding this unpredictable world together. Adapted by playwright Julian Larnach from Favel Parrett’s award-winning debut novel, Past the Shallows is an ode to brotherhood and a heart-wrenching, lyrical exploration of mortality, family secrets and the capacity for both brutality and tenderness within contemporary masculinity. Get Involved There are so many ways to be part of ATYP. Go to atyp.com.au Youth Advisory Body Want to play a part in shaping ATYP’s programs? If you’re aged 13—26, apply to join ATYP’s Youth Advisory Body (the YABbies). As a part of this national group, you’re invited to read scripts and make suggestions for programming, advise on company strategies and guide the work and initiatives we present. There are additional opportunities to review productions and conduct interviews on behalf of ATYP. The YABbies meet eight times a year and provide an important voice in planning our future. Audition Database We believe all young Australians should be able to audition for their national youth theatre. ATYP holds open auditions for every production, and performers of all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Sign up to our Auditions Database through our website and be among the first to hear about our shows and opportunities for other theatre, film and TV castings across Australia. Internships & Volunteering We are always on the lookout for enthusiastic people who are interested in the many facets of producing shows and running a theatre. Be a part of the team that helps us build sets, run auditions, deliver workshops, promote our productions, update databases, rig lights, stuff envelopes or one of the other myriad activities it takes to run a theatre company! Whatever your skills or interests, if you are happy to donate some time to ATYP, we’d love to hear from you at hello@atyp.com.au

Front of House Stars As we open ATYP’s new theatre we need help ensuring everything runs smoothly. If you are passionate about live theatre, join our volunteer circle with the Front of House team. This is a great way for young adults to get customer service experience and for not-so-young adults to be a part of the ATYP community. And of course, you get to see some of the best youth theatre Australia has on offer! Register your interest at hello@atyp.com.au Teaching Artists ATYP takes great pride in employing industry professionals as Teaching Artists across our weekly classes and our popular school holiday programs. Bring your professional skills as a performer, director, writer, designer, and share that knowledge with young people aged 4—26. If this sounds like you, reach out, we’d love to hear from you at workshops@atyp.com.au Donate Only 19% of total ATYP income comes from government funding, so your donation, no matter the size, helps us continue delivering our worldclass theatre making programs and original Australian productions for young people. Make a gift at atyp.com.au Venue Hire Situated metres from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and within easy walking distance of Barangaroo and Circular Quay, ATYP’s state-of-the-art theatre, foyer, rehearsal spaces, and meeting room are available for hire. ATYP

ATYP Foundation Launched in 2003 as part of the 40th birthday celebrations, the ATYP Foundation was created to develop and manage a capital fund that will ensure the theatre company’s future and enable it to enrich the lives of young Australians through transformative theatre experiences. In 2010, the Foundation launched a program to commission new works to be performed by young people. In 2012, the ATYP Foundation Commission Award was established to build a canon of 17 new works specifically for young people aged 10—13 years. This extremely successful initiative has seen seventeen new works written or adapted for the stage. All plays have been published by Playlab and performed by many schools, nationwide. In 2016, the Foundation created a new yearly commission for 14—17 year-old performers. Since 2011 the ATYP Foundation has supported the development of:

2021 saw the ATYP Foundation Commission temporarily paused, so we are excited to see it return in 2022. The ongoing support of the ATYP Foundation has been instrumental in achieving a purpose-built theatre for young people at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct and we are especially grateful to the Foundation for their commitment to support the 2022 and 2023 seasons as Principal Production Partner. Funds raised through the Foundation assist in maintaining a sustainable financial platform on which ATYP can thrive. For more information about the ATYP Foundation please visit atyp.com.au 2022
