OUR FUTURE AND FOR– EVER HOME

ATYP

Season 2021

In 2022 ATYP will launch its first season in purpose-built premises on Pier 2/3 in the Walsh Bay Arts and Cultural Precinct. This historic event heralds a new era for one of Australia’s oldest and most significant theatre companies. It concludes 24 years of negotiation with successive NSW Governments and end years of struggle trying to secure a venue to showcase the company’s programming.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Artistic Director/CEO, Fraser, and key Board members who have kept the ship on course through difficult seas and have never lost sight of the fact that 2022 is going to be something extra special. Exciting and challenging times ahead.

With the launch of the 2021 season, I’m thrilled to report that planning is well advanced for the move to our permanent home at Pier 2/3 towards the end of the year. I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the support of NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin and Create NSW through which we have secured both operational and project funding as well as COVID-recovery funds to see us through this important year of transition. Additionally, I would like to extend our gratitude to the Federal Arts Minister Mr Paul Fletcher for the vital lifeline extended to ATYP through the RISE funding initiative.

RIDE THE WAVE WITH US IN ‘21

ATYP

Season 2021

Welcome to 2021, the year we expect the unexpected. Over the past twelve months we’ve been challenged to rethink so much about the world we live in … and the role theatre plays within it. Planning for the future at the moment involves a swirling mix of anxiety, excitement, uncertainty and hope.

We return to the theatre for the first time in twelve months with the exceptional I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You, the brain-child of Brisbane’s masters of mayhem, The Good Room. A horde of 9–13–year–olds have asked adults questions about growing up, about wisdom, happiness, love and dancing. With a banging sound track and a spectacular audio-visual design, this epic production in the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta welcomes all generations back to ATYP. Come and consider the wisdom we’ve garnered and the ways we share it with young people.

As always happens in such times, artists help us make sense of the illogical, the seemingly unfair, the abstract in a changing world. Over recent weeks the words of Bob Dylan have been playing in my head:

05

Lights in the Park is a beautiful reflection Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen, and keep your eyes wide the chance won’t come again. And don’t speak too soon for the wheel’s still in spin, and there’s no tellin’; who that it’s namin’. For the loser now will be later to win, for the times they are a changin’. ATYP’s 2021 season is a reflection on a changing world. We are very proud to bring you a season of new Australian plays and engagement programs that speak to the challenges, relationships, technology and pathways we are navigating, here and now.

on small town identity. Winner of the 2018 Senior ATYP Foundation Commission Award, this character-driven play delves into the complex and fascinating relationships of teenagers – with themselves, their parents, their space in the world, their dreams and of course, each other. We are proud to present the return season of Follow Me Home, the unexpected smash hit developed with young people who have experienced homelessness. This is your chance to see this captivating play by award winning playwright Lewis Treston before it takes to the road for a national tour. Four young actors transform into myriad characters reflecting different

facets of all too familiar experiences. Once again we are partnering with our friends at Shopfront Arts Co-Op to devise something special. The process of growing up is not always pleasant - The Lies We Were Told examines those moments that leave us forever changed. For better or worse. What were the fantasies we believed, the misunderstandings we thought were truths, the lies we were told that, when revealed, aged us ever so slightly? The wicked sense of humour of Natalie Rose collides with an ensemble of artists from children to young adults. The outcome will start your next dinner conversation. And our season is rounded out with two plays that have won the coveted Junior ATYP Foundation Commission Award. Soul Trading by Kate Walder examines what makes us human. If someone looks like you, can learn what you learn, speak like you and care about something or someone, does it matter if they are a machine? Meanwhile, Shack by George Kemp examines fear and community in a warming world. A small group on an arctic excursion is trapped in a shack without their teachers or guide. Meanwhile something outside is hunting in the blizzard.

In 2021, the main-stage season is supported by the launch of extraordinary engagement programs. We used our time shut inside in 2020 to reflect, respond and invent new ways of working. Now we are very proud to be able to offer programs to every young Australian. Every school. Everywhere. ATYP On Demand which offers productions, teaching resources and programs free to every high school in the country is joined by ATYP On Demand Plus. ATYP’s digital classroom, On Demand Plus allows primary schools across Australia to use drama and participatory learning to discover units within the national curriculum. We are also very proud to be launching ATYP Digital Touring, opportunities for venues across Australia to present highquality filmed recordings of ATYP shows supported by live interactive workshops, masterclasses and Q&A experiences.

ATYP

ATYP continues to deliver Australia’s largest playwriting program, commissioning new Australian plays and developing emerging writers across the country. We are launching the Industry Studio specifically for artists aged between 18 and 26, to run parallel to the extraordinary programs for young people in primary and high school. We look forward to riding the waves of change with you in 2021.

2021 COMES CHARG– ING AHEAD

ATYP

Season 2021

I remember the first time I walked into the ATYP office. As I waded through the shiny silver streamers hanging from the door frame and into the bright lights I was greeted by big hellos and equal smiles from people I had never met before. It was as if I had known them for years. And the one word I can think of that encompasses the feeling I got as I walked in, had my meeting, and left... is warmth. ATYP has had a mammoth impact on me both as an artist and person in the couple of short years I’ve worked with them.

ATYP have not only helped me through times of financial stress and artistic confusion, but they have always, always, kept the street open two ways and have been active listeners seeking to grow and evolve with the next generation of artists coming Australia’s way. And for me? This is what makes them so exciting. They are not a company who dictate the way they think young artists should take. Instead, they are a community who hear what is wanted by the artists to help them thrive, and they build the blocks needed to get them there.

From the National Studio (to this day I

As the uncertainty of 2020 comes to a

can say that this was the most fulfilling and revitalising creative week of my life), to seeing my piece Fight or Flight being turned into a short film, to RoomWorks, being a part of the ATYPical advisors, to recently completing the directors course, to how ever many future endeavours I am sure to embark on with them (whilst my youth allows it) - each experience has not only been supportive, but challenging. The type of challenge where it pushes you out of your comfort zone just enough to find those nuggets of gold you wouldn’t find without a little help from your friends. (Cue: The Beatles)

close, and 2021 comes charging ahead, I cannot wait to see the season ATYP has in store. From commissions, to new work and collaborations - the one thing I know for sure is that ATYP will continue to be a community who care, who innovate, and who celebrate the next generation of stars coming your way. Now, we just have to find some more shiny silver streamers... Bernadette Fam ATYP Alumna

Season 2021

Why do you have to go to work? How come adults drink to have fun? What was life like before the internet? Is 50 too old to learn to surf? This is a work full of questions. Asked by young people. Answered by adults. Transformed inside a theatre-turnedplayground-turned-battleground delivered by Generation Up Next. Watch as age collides with experience in a revealing onehour tell-all, where adults take a backseat as a powerful gang of 9-13-year-olds drop some truths… and the mic.

Venue Riverside Theatres, Parramatta

Combining anonymous submissions with high-impact video design, I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You pits age against experience in a conversation built around three key starting points: what you’ve been told, what you know to be true, and what you want to believe.

Antarctica. A blizzard. Eight school kids are stranded in a shack, at the bottom of the world, with a sinister force circling outside‌ Our young explorers, in the ghostly footsteps of Ernest Shackleton, question their place in the natural and social order of the world, as the limits of their courage are pushed into uncharted waters. Safety (and sanity) seems to be drifting farther and farther away. The younger generation is being called on to lead like never before. The power of nature and the nature of power are explored in this adventure story for the Greta Thunberg generation. Digital Touring Program Leading digital drama content. ATYP is a leader in digital drama content for the education market, and has an impressive catalogue of productions filmed in three-camera, high definition. These are categorised as shows for young people aged 10-13 years, 14-17 and 15+ for senior students and young adults. Since COVID has changed the way we engage with live theatre, presenting venues across the country have faced uncertainty around programming work in order to make it economically viable. There has also been the question of when or if audiences will feel confident to return to see live performance in an auditorium full of people.

Venues can offer local schools a ‘Day at the Theatre’ excursion with a screening of one of ATYP’s most popular productions, a Q&A with the artists and a pre- or postshow drama workshop. The experience also includes free teaching resources. The interactive elements are fully customisable and can be delivered live or online. Cost: • 30% of gross box office income less ticketing fees (payable only if the screening goes ahead with no upfront •

• ATYP Digital Touring responds to these concerns and invites these venues to screen an ATYP production for schools’ audiences providing high-quality experience with very low financial risk to the presenting venue.

Development Together we can empower young Australians. Philanthropic support is crucial for ATYP to continue delivering our commissions, workshops, productions, scholarships and writing opportunities. Together, these programs empower young Australians to find their own voice. In 2020, philanthropy helped us achieve: • 684 teachers directly engaged by ATYP Education • 105 scholarships places awarded • 2,487 registered users for ATYP On Demand •

Scholarships In 2020, ATYP provided 105 scholarships worth more than $42,000 to young people who otherwise may not have access to the performing arts. Our weekly and school holiday workshop programs build confidence, encourage connection with peers and expand the horizons of participants. We work closely with our partner charities the Girls and Boys Brigade, Asylum Seekers Centre, Captivate and the Smith Family to identify children most in need.

ATYP has several major giving avenues including ATYP Support, the ATYP Scholarship Fund, ATYP Production Support and the Adèle Jeffreys Memorial Fund. Donating to ATYP Support allows us to channel your donation to the place it’s most needed, helping us support the diverse range of programs the company runs each year.

New work Each year ATYP works with writers both established and emerging to support the development of new work. In 2020 we supported 74 writers to create new work. → Give it! Please contact the Development Manager on 02 9270 2421 to discuss your involvement.
