ATYP

Season 2014

I’ve been in a number of conversations lately about the role of the national youth theatre company. Looking to the future we are starting to see beyond the transformative experiences that we generate day to day and ask: how do we ensure that our work has the broadest national impact? We have a unique group of artists working with the company. What can we offer that has a lasting legacy?

In 2014 we present four works commissioned by ATYP from some of the nation’s most exciting artists. One of these plays first conceived as a project in 2008, while another began in 2011. We have waited patiently for them to be ready for production, and I am overjoyed you will see them this year. In addition we will showcase four of the most exciting independent theatre companies in Sydney in the ATYP Selects program. And we are proud to host the Cameo season of five outstanding national examples of youth theatre.

For me, the answer lies in playwriting. The national youth theatre company must be a passionate, fearless engine-room for new Australian plays. Great theatre speaks to all ages, but if most people are forced to engage with theatre as teenagers, create compelling plays with young characters and you speak directly to a new generation. Create works that are performed by schools, and youth theatres around the country for years to come and you build a new canon of classics. You influence a new generation of Australians.

I have no doubt you will see a production in our 2014 season that will be remembered for years to come. You will meet young artists that become household names. You may see a new Australian classic or find an existing play that steals your heart. Sadly we can’t give you the specifics just yet. That’s the joy of youth theatre. These things take time to grow. But I promise you won’t regret joining us on the journey of discovery. Enjoy.

It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Atypical Advisors, ATYP’s youth steering committee made up of young people aged 13–26 years old. Some of us are writers or actors, others are aspiring producers. We have a pretty important role. We make sure that the young people of Australia are kept well and truly the focus of all ATYP's ventures. Emma Campbell Atypical Advisor 2013

Season 2014

ATYP may be in its fifties, but retirement certainly isn’t in our field of vision! Each month we meet with the ATYP team to talk about what is going well and what could be better; we weigh in on what productions we think should become part of the season each year; and we explain to the old folk in the office just what ‘YOLO’ means. I’ve been involved with ATYP across almost every program – ensembles; workshops; a few productions; and a role in Stick, one of the films produced as part of The Voices Project 2013. I have even used a monologue from the Voices Project for my HSC Drama Individual Project. The Wharf has become a bit of a second home for me, as well as giving me unique opportunities to be part of the theatre industry. I’m so excited to share with you what we’ve got happening this year, because it’s going to be a cracker. I think one of the most striking things about 2014 is that we’re challenging and redefining what youth theatre is.

Putting young people on stage, and presenting professional theatre and evocative productions are not mutually exclusive. In the 2014 season there are a couple of shows in particular that I’m very excited about. M.Rock is a stand out, reminding us that a play starring a grandmother still has a home at a youth theatre company (we believe in growing old, but not growing up). Sugarland celebrates just how big this country is, and how different all of our stories are. Don’t get me started on the rest of what we have in store. The Atypical Advisors definitely give this program our seal of approval. Make sure you don’t miss out on being a part of ATYP in 2014. We look forward to having you join us at The Wharf, online or across the country.

Season 2014

M.Rock is a magical new play, based on a true story, about the enduring joys of music, dancing and selfdiscovery. The generation gap just got tighter. Lachlan Philpott is one of the country’s hottest writers, rocketing into the Sydney theatre landscape with the success of Silent Disco for ATYP and Griffin Theatre Company in 2011.

In his distinctive language, Philpott charts the fortunes of 18-year-old Tracy and her grandmother Mabel. Tracy has just finished school, she’s bought a round-the-world ticket and is flying away to soak up experience. By contrast, Mabel is stable. She plays piano for The → Players, knits for the Get involved African appeal and Audi Night with the Actors, looks after Hilda’s cat. 16.06.14, 7pm.

A co-production with Sydney Theatre Company and directed by Fraser Corfield, M.Rock features Valerie Bader (Australia Day) as the intrepid septuagenarian, as well as a live DJ pumping the energy of the dance floor into the veins of the theatre. Enjoy a delightfully fresh, inter-generational theatre experience that challenges taboos and assumptions about age.

Over the following two years playwrights Rachael Coopes and Wayne Blair spent two months in this unique place. The result is an absolutely extraordinary new play.

Luke is smart, funny, shy and highly imaginative – but has no friends at school. In fact, he feels like he’s not even of the same species as the other kids in his class. But that isn’t surprising, because he’s not. Luke’s father (whom he has never met) came from a distant planet - which makes Luke half-human, half alien. He’s an ‘alienoid’. Which explains a lot, thinks Luke.

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t.” – Lewis Carroll This is a world where chess pieces come to life. Where cards are painting the roses red, and white rabbits in petticoats are running very late. This is the world of the man who believed ‘as many as six impossible things before breakfast’. However, Lewis Carroll may not be all that he seems. Pages have been torn from his diary and a section of his life remains forbidden to enter. The Missing Pages provocatively imagines what might have been contained in the destroyed section of Carroll’s diary.
