Director’s note Since we first staged M.Rock, it has remained a production very close to my heart. I've had the good fortune to be involved in commissioning and developing new Australian work since the mid 90s and have been leading youth theatre companies for most of that time. In the very many stories that I've seen developed and staged, M.Rock remains a stand-out. I believe it achieves something that is so rare in our theatre, it borders on unique. For many years the mantra of youth arts companies in Australia was: “Creating work for, with, and by young people!". We leaned into the philosophy that young people have their own way of communicating, their own views of the world, their own social structures and issues separate to those of older generations. Therefore we need to create a space for work by young people to speak only to young people, separate from the rest of society. Unfortunately, young people are not the only generation that feels isolated. Many of these same issues are shared at the other end of the age spectrum. There are many older Australians who also feel separate from wider society, uncertain of communicating outside their own generation and disconnected from decision-makers. In many respects it's the sense of isolation experienced by these generations that fuels the issues reported on so regularly in our media. To me, M.Rock exemplifies the nation's development in youth theatre. We have moved from stories just for young people, to stories for everyone. Yes we still examine the world through a young character's eyes, but it doesn't have to happen in isolation. M.Rock connects generations. And it does so through an understanding of qualities that are timeless - love, loss, laughter, adventure... and music. Lachlan's beautifully original and refreshingly comedic play intertwines the coming-of-age tales of two generations in search of a meaning for life. In the process, it forces us to examine our preconceptions about the way different ages should behave. And it does it in a way that honours both generations. Sure there's a little dose of magic to help the story fly, but everyone's allowed to dream a little. If we have done this script justice, the production should be an affirmation of life. It is a reminder of the need to shoulder the responsibility of living in the real world without forgetting your dreams. And above all else, of the need to keep updating the soundtrack of our lives.

M.ROCK

Writer’s note When the fog rolls back and allows, I think back on the first production of M.Rock with fondness and elation. Fraser’s 2014 production was a delight and the cast and team were terrific. I’m a long-time fan of Valerie Bader. I had her in mind when I was writing the role. So seeing her up there rocking it was, and still is, heaven. I’m so excited that Valerie’s back. Up until M.Rock, I had unintentionally written plays with very serious content. It was such a strange thing to sit in the theatre when M.Rock played and hear laughter instead of people scratching their heads. That they found the surprising transformation of an older woman funny, affirming, and joyous was sublime. Inspired by the close relationships I had with my grandmothers, it is a play of the heart. And a play that pays tribute to people who give love all their lives without it being recognised. M.Rock is funny but it isn’t frivolous. I hope it demonstrates how silly the assumptions we make about ageing are. It should also remind us of how vital it is for each of us to beat our own drums and let go and dance, however badly. A second production is a rare occasion for an Australian play since so many never get one. The fact that this play is back at ATYP is amazing for me as ATYP holds such a special place in my heart. I worked at the company between 2008 and 2011 and have been involved in many ways since. ATYP has supported me as a writer in a manner that has been fundamental to the successes I have had. The company has also been there when things were not so great. This is a credit to the approach and philosophy of the entire team, but I want to recognise that Fraser Corfield has done exceptional things leading this company. Under his leadership, ATYP has played an enormous role in commissioning new plays and nurturing generating artists. Like so many new plays commissioned in the last two decades, M.Rock was commissioned by ATYP. Fraser liked Mabel Mudge so much, he backed her. Fraser, thank you for your vision, your braveness and determination that have driven the plans to grow, to get a new space and raise money against the odds. Thanks for the integrity you show in all you do and for your warmth and humanity. So many theatre artists have been given more than just a foot up by you and I am grateful to acknowledge that I am certainly one of them. At a time when the world we live in continues to be shaped by denial and uncertainty, and as we rock about like little rusty boats, people need to be buoyed and inspired. We also need to practise the values of our First Nations cultures and respect our elders. Thanks to all the team, to my loving and patient partner James, and to my Mum, who always told me to write comedies. But the biggest thanks goes to you for supporting new Australian theatre. See you on the dance floor.
