THE MOST DRAMATIC PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER IS ATYP!


With classes for all young people from K-12 there is something for everyone. Acting, singing, writing, short films, stand-up, playtime, imagination stretching, movement and so much more! Participants aged 5-12 have the opportunity to delve into the world of magic, the deep ocean or even travel back through time! We have teamed up with the Sydney Opera House to see their production of Roald Dahl’s classic Geogrge’s Marvellous Medicine, given you the opportunity to create your own musical with modern pop songs or maybe you want to discover you inner Superhero with director of 2017’s Wonder Fly,Sophie Kelly. Our older acting fans aged 13-18 can start the year getting ahead with their HSC drama preparation, learn screen acting from industry professionals or perhaps test the boundaries of what theatre can be by exploring musical theatre or trying one of our two special master classes in either comedy or cabaret. The Faraway Kingdom Enter a world of royalty, knights and magic! Spend the first week of the holidays making crowns, witches’ hats and potions. Be inspired by great stories such as Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, The Sword in the Stone, and many more. Save a King from a fiery dragon or help release a kidnapped princess. Develop storytelling techniques, make new friends, and put on your magical showing at the end of the week.

Disgusting News I heard the news today and oh boy, it’s disgusting! This summer, make up your own news stories and cross to reporters in disgusting places, reporting on disgusting things. Discover your best news-reporter voice, and interview some of your favourite characters from plays, novels, television or films. While learning presentation techniques and using the powers of improvisation, you will create an entire news bulletin that should gross out your families and friends.

My Reality Rules Make sure you get the recipe just right while you nail that song, or you could be voted off the island. Big Brother is watching you! Delve into the culture that is reality television, and create your very own hit reality show. Explore themes and devise a show to perform for your family and friends at the end of the week.

Comedy Masterclass Making people laugh might not be as easy as you think! Spend the first week of the school holidays learning from one of Australia’s leading comedy professionals. Learn the discipline required to master this form, explore physical comedy, discover improvisation techniques and learn the principles of comedy that will enrich your performance. Throughout this process write, rehearse and perform your own comic sketches to present at the end of the week.

Deep Sea Adventures Let’s go under the sea this summer and explore the depths of the ocean. Discover amazing creatures like giant squid and mermaids, uncover sunken ruins and treasures, and explore worlds like the Octopus’ Garden or Atlantis. Develop your character creation and storytelling skills in this aquatic world and perform a show for your family and friends at the end of the week that’s sure to make a big splash!

The Secret Life of Toys When you have left your room and nobody is home, the toys come out to play! Have you ever wondered how your favourite toy would walk or talk? How would they go meeting another toy from a completely different world? What do they do when they aren’t being played with by their owners? This is the week to answer all these questions. Discover new ways to move, explore silly voices, and learn to tell stories, all for a playful showing for your family and friends at the end of the week

Quick, Before the Clock Strikes 6! Tick, tock! Time is running out and only you have the power to save us! Spend a week exploring the wonders of time and what an effective tool it can be in storytelling. What are we counting down to? What will happen if we don’t make it in time? Create answers to these questions, develop characters and together create a show that will have your audience on the edge of their seats.

There’s a Dragon in the Backyard Those footprints weren’t made by your dog, and you certainly don’t remember lighting a campfire in the backyard. Could the unimaginable have happened? Yes! There is an amazing, beautiful dragon in your backyard! But will everyone else think this dragon is as wonderful and friendly as you do? Investigate themes of home and teamwork, and together work out how to keep this dragon safe. Learn skills in characterisation, devising and storytelling, and by the end of the week you will have devised a show that is sure to captivate your family and friends.

Pop Musical Using current pop songs, create you very own, brand new musical! Find a song to fit your story or make your story fit a song. Be inspired by the modern pop stars and films such as Pitch Perfect and Glee. The week will be filled with singing, dancing, acting and musical challenges. Create your own singing group, have sing-offs, and at the end of the week you will perform your new hit show to an excited audience.

I don’t want to alarm you, but… I think I may be a Superhero! Upon waking up one morning, something feels different. A weight of expectation and responsibility has landed on your shoulders. Working with the director and writer of ATYP’s 2016 Foundation Commission winning play, explore the mythology of the superhero genre, discover your secret identity and delve into the complexity of being a superhero.

Musical Theatre: Through the Ages Spend a week exploring the genre of Musical Theatre and observe its evolution. From the compositions of Gilbert & Sullivan to Sondheim, learn some of the great songs of all time and put them together to create your own unique musical. Learn vocal technique, basic choreography and storytelling techniques, and put all of these skills together to perform your timeless new piece at the end of the week.

Short Film Making There are so many mediums to tell a story, and filmmaking is becoming ever more accessible and popular. During the week you will scout locations, write your own script and shot list based on what you find, and direct and perform in your own short film. These holidays we are devising around the theme of ‘lost’. Learn how to create tension and suspense through camera techniques, and work in front and behind the camera. There are many locations to choose from – cafes, alleyways, theatres. Where will you create your masterpiece?

School Years 9–12

Burn the Seats! What if rather than watching a show, patrons participated in one? Be influenced by board games, card games and interactive technology to create a piece of theatre that is totally immersive and engages its audience directly. Spend a week with Caleb Lewis (one of Australia’s leading experts in gaming theatre), exploring the role and purpose of theatre. Use what you learn to shatter the fourth wall and get the audience out of their seats!

Preschool: Ages 4–5

Space Adventures Spend the day putting on your jetpacks, and countdown to lift off as you journey through time and space! Enjoy hearing stories of astronauts, aliens, planets and more. Our youngest actors will creatively play, expand their imaginations, make craft and meet friends. At the end of the day get ready for a showing that will be out of this world.

The Travelling Imagination Chair One day, BANG! In the middle of the town is a chair. How on earth did it get there and who does it belong to? This chair has special powers and can transport you to different worlds, meet magical creatures and have incredible adventures. Let your imagination run wild in this workshop. Learn character development, story-telling skills and have an enchanting story to perform for your family and friends at the end of the week.

Marvellous Medicines and Peculiar Potions “Double, double, toil and trouble”. From the age of Shakespeare we have been obsessed with spells and potions, so why not spend the week devising your own? What powers will your potion hold? What do you do when a potion goes wrong? Learn character development, performance and devising skills. During the week you will go and see a performance of George’s Marvellous Medicine at the Sydney Opera House. ATYP is teaming up with the Sydney Opera House to deliver this fun-packed workshop, and your performance is sure to cast a spell on your audience at the end of the week.

Time Travellers Is it possible to travel back through time and fix the wrongs we’ve wrought before — or will we just create more wrongs by messing with something we’re not meant to? Spend a week creating time machines, visiting the past and future, and ensure you prepare for a safe return. Learn storytelling and character techniques, enjoy dressing up in clothes from different eras and perform a show for your family and friends at the end of the week.

The Boy Wizard on Trial Is Harry really as sweet and innocent as first thought? Was the Dark Lord really as evil as everyone makes out? As part of an an ensemble, delve deeper into the world of wizard school and put one of the characters on trial! Become the Judge of the court room, be a lawyer for the defense or the prosecution, or maybe one of the characters being questioned on the stand. Learn debating and presentation skills, re-create characters, and have fun devising a gripping courtroom drama for your family and friends at the end of the week!

Stage and Screen Want to see your face on the big screen one day? Then you need to hone your screen acting skills. Learn how much can be said in just a look. Discover what the differences are when acting for the stage or screen. Once you have the basics down, you are ready to act out some scenes from your favourite shows. Film your work, review the work and analyse your performance. At the end of the week perform your favourite scenes live!

Rise Up! This is not on. It’s not right. Who cares if this is the way things have been done for ages, it’s time to shake things up! Spend a week getting riled up about the status quo. Maybe it’s the culture in your school, the government or even your friendship group. Explore themes of pack mentality, dictatorship and rebellion. By the end of the week your performance should have your audience stamping their feet and calling out from the stalls!

HSC – Intensive Looking to get the most out of your Individual and Group Performances for your HSC? Then this is the course for you. ATYP has a strong record with the HSC, having created a canon of HSC monologues through the Voices Project over the past 6 years. Over this fourday course, discover devising and improvisation techniques, learn how to select the best piece for your Individual Performance, ensure you can contribute to a strong Group Performance and explore how to keep an audience engaged.

Under the Sea Let’s go under the sea this summer and explore the depths of the ocean! Enjoy hearing stories of mermaids, submarines, octopuses and more. Into the Wild Find your inner animal and let them roar! Spend the last bit of the holidays imagining living and growing up in the jungle. What would be different to the way you live today? How would you talk or eat your food, and what animals would you want to live with? Learn movement and storytelling techniques and create a show to perform for your family and friends.

The Magic Wardrobe When you go down the long hall at my grandparents’ house, there is a door to a room. That door is always locked, but in that room there sits a mysterious wardrobe. We’re constantly told not to go in there, because it can be dangerous. Let your curiosity get the better of you this summer and enjoy solving this strange mystery. Develop your devising techniques, create amazing characters and perform a thrilling show for your family and friends at the end of the week.

Sketch Comedy From Laurel & Hardy, Monty Python, The Goonies, Little Britain, and Saturday Night Live, all the way to The Chaser, sketch comedy has been making us laugh forever. Get the edge you need in comedy, learn to write your own original sketch, play with improvisation techniques, physical comedy and a whole lot more. Have your friends and family rolling in the aisles at the end of the week with a variety of sketches, and learn the form that has produced the likes of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and of course ATYP alumni, Rebel Wilson and Chris Lilley.

Cabaret Masterclass Australia’s cabaret scene is thriving, and you should be a part of it! Be in the room with one of the industry’s best.
