CDs 1 week, can be renewed once if nobody has reserved them

Reference Items

Books with yellow or red spine labels and all journals and magazines. Unavailable for loan

High demand items The Library reserves the right to recall high demand items that are on loan. The Library will then change the loan period so that more students can access a popular item within the time frame required by their course. If you have an item on loan that is in high demand, the Library will notify you by email and SMS to return the item within 3 days; if the item is not returned within this time, you will be fined £1 per day or part of a day. It is therefore important that you check your AUB email account for Library emails on a regular basis. Short course students Short course students may borrow up to 4 standard loan books for a 4 week loan period. Fines for overdue items are 30p per day.

5

Self service terminals The terminals are located to the left of the Library counter; they can be used to issue, renew and return books and DVDs. If required, receipts can be printed or sent to your AUB email address indicating issue and return dates. If you have any outstanding fines on your account you need to use the self service machine by the window or pay at the counter. Returned books that are reserved for another reader should be placed in the reservations slot. If you encounter any problems please go to the counter and ask a member of Library staff. Managing your reader record online To log into your personal library account visit the Library website at aub.ac.uk/library and enter your student number in the ‘my loans’ area of the Library homepage. Logging into your account will enable you to: •

View current items on loan and due dates

Renew current items on loan (without fines)

View outstanding charges

View the loan history

• View all of your reservations (outstanding and completed) • Make reservations on items currently on loan to other readers

6

Renewals and reservations An item cannot be renewed if it has been reserved or it has reached the maximum number of renewals. You cannot renew items or place reservations if you have books or fines outstanding. If an item you want to borrow is on loan, you can make a reservation. You will be notified by email when it is ready for collection. Items need to be collected within 3 days (7 days for parttime students). After that time it will be re-shelved or passed to the next reserver. External members of the Library cannot reserve books. Late returns The Library charges fines for the late return of items. Fines must be paid before any items can be borrowed or renewed. The Library will send the following reminder notices: •

3 days before an item is due to be returned, an email will be sent to your AUB account.

When an item is 7 days overdue, an email will be sent to your AUB account.

When an item is 14 days overdue you will receive a letter to your term time address. You will then have 2 weeks to settle your account before the Finance department is notified.

When an item becomes 28 days overdue you will receive a final letter to notify you of the overdue charges and replacement cost of items. The Finance department is notified and steps are taken to recover the debt. Until your fine is cleared you will be stopped from accessing the Library online resources and using your AUB login to access ITCS resources.

7

The Library takes no responsibility for the non-receipt of emails or letters regarding overdue items: it is your responsibility to return items on time. At the end of the year, final year students will be contacted in relation to overdue items or fines. Lost items Please inform the Library as soon as possible if you think you have lost an item that is on loan to you. Once reported lost, items are renewed for 2 weeks, allowing time for them to be found. You will be required to pay any fines incurred on an item before you reported it lost: once you have notified us, you will stop incurring fines on the item. If the lost item is not found by the end of the 2 week period you will be sent an account for it and given a date by which to pay the replacement cost. If the deadline is reached and the account has not been settled, it will be passed to Finance who will take steps to recover the debt. Replacement costs The full replacement cost of any lost or missing items will be invoiced. The replacement value is calculated when items are reported lost. Replacement costs may be more than the original price paid by the Library, particularly in the case of rare or valuable items.

8

Resources The Library contains books, journals, DVDs, specialist CDs and newspapers. To search for Library resources, use the Library Catalogue at aub.ac.uk/catalogue Got a Question? Subject Librarians Your course has its own Subject Librarian whose main responsibilities are to: •

Liaise with the course team to ensure the Library’s books, journals and other services are developed to support the learning, teaching and research requirements of your subject area.

Hold teaching sessions, run workshops and offer tutorials to enable you to use the Library resources and find information effectively.

Attend course board meetings where your Student Representatives can feed back Library related issues to the Subject Librarian.

We welcome suggestions from students for items to add to Library resources. If there are specific books, DVDs or journals you would like to recommend, please email your Subject Librarian or complete a comments and suggestions form giving your name and course. You will normally be notified of our decision within four days of receipt. In addition, you will be told when any items you have suggested are added to stock, so that you have the opportunity to borrow them first. Referencing guidelines (bibliography) For some units you will be required to reference your research and compile a reference list or bibliography. The Library has created a guide that will help you do this, which is available at aub.ac.uk/library/referencing-guide If you need additional help please contact your Subject Librarian.

10

Research guides Research guides provide guidance on starting your research, and can be found at the Library counter. Study skills collection The Library has a section dedicated to study skills, where books can be found on a range of topics, including how to research and write essays.

11

Inter-library loans The inter-library loans service gives access to material from other libraries which is not held by AUB Library. It covers all kinds of printed materials, including books, journals and conference papers. The service is available to members of staff, postgraduate students and BA students studying in their second or final year. Prep HE and BA first year students must get a form signed by their tutor before they can request inter-library loans. All forms are available from the Library counter. A non-refundable charge of £1 per request is made for the service, payable when placing the request. There is an additional charge for renewing books that come from the British Library. Before requesting an inter-library loan, please: •

Check the Library catalogue stock to ensure that we do not already have access to the item you require or have items already in stock which will provide the information you require.

Let staff know what time limit you are working to: interlibrary loans may take 2 to 3 weeks, depending where they come from and whether they are in demand. Please allow as much time as possible for us to obtain the item for you.

Return the books promptly. The service is based on trust and reputation, and additional charges are made if items are returned late or lost.

If you wish to renew an inter-library loan please contact the AUB Library 2-3 days before the item is due for return. The Library will need to check with the lending library before an item can be renewed.

12
