I love the English language it’s so malleable, adaptable and so full of nuance and subtlety. It’s simply delicious. Most of my ideas start with language. Ideas born out of words, become images, that resonate alongside catch-phrases or slogans. Take the word AAH! (exclamation essential). It can mean a moment of recognition, a microsecond of pleasure or a sense of knowing. Which leads me to - the key to great ideas - create surprises and leave ‘a smile in the mind’ of the viewer.
David Stuart and Beryl McAlhone coined the phrase with the title of their classic book ‘A Smile in the Mind’. That pretty much sums up what I love about design. I learnt my craft in the pre-digital era and whilst not an ‘old-fashioned’ designer (having successfully embraced and mastered all the new technology) I learnt early on to value ideas. Not only did I embrace the concept that all great design begins with a great idea, but I was schooled in the classic arts of graphics - like drawing, print-making, typography, photography and concept generation. The
new tools, available to us as designers, make the job faster, but not necessarily better, or easier, and at the end of the day the computer and the programmes we use are merely tools. Without an idea to drive them, computers are just dormant electronic marvels. hen I first started working, ideas were tried, tested and executed in sketch-books or on drawing tables. Now they all exist on a hard-disc capable of storing vast amounts of information. HOWEVER I love the process of solving problems, and often much that is discarded is still of interest, and has an intrinsic value, in that it charts the process and progress of solving a design or communication problem. And what better way than to store and record that process than in a digital sketchbook? So in keeping with the trend to ‘make it digital’ I present the work from my studio completed during the last 24 months, during 2008 / 2009 / 2010, in a new format. Enjoy and thank you for looking.

Representing the work of architectural student’s from around the world, presents us with an interesting challenge each year. The brief requires us to develop a symbol or device that is easily adaptable for print (tickets and invitations), display (exhibition panels) and audio-visual presentation, which is then animated and shown on plasma screens and in a multimedia format. We have made good use of the circle, which represents the two medals awarded each year, reinventing it as a graphic form and discovering many beautiful and surprising permutations along the way.

Famous for 15 seconds, or thereabouts the students enjoy their moment of glory on stage, during the presentation of the awards. In true WARHOLIAN style, in 2009 our graphic experiments found us exploring many colourful and vibrant variations of the circle theme.

We found a collection of coloured foam letters, scattered them on a mirror and made a soapy mess around them. The clouds were reflected in the mirror, thereby creating a mesmerising, floating world. Finally we covered the mirror in a lime green jelly and arranged the letters, like a message on a birthday cake. Then captured it all on camera.

We went ‘back to black’. Considered simple shapes that represented architecture in its most basic form, and finally sent a square on a progressive mathematical rotation until a new solution flowered in front of our eyes.

MASTERPIECE MUSIC
When designing logos, NOTHING CAN REPLACE A PENCIL AND A LAYOUT PAD. I love to start by sketching, letterforms, symbols, combinations of letters and icons. It’s a visual treasure-hunt. Sometimes, by swapping my pencil for a stick shaved to a blunt end and covered in ink, or a big fat decorator’s brush and a large sheet of paper, new and exciting letterforms are discovered.

9 The figs have gone to sleep, but not the cicadas, nor me. Their engine hum is the same each night, scratching the stars into heaven and blistering the moon. The nights are hot and dry and even the dust is thirsty, crying out for rain - the memory of you hangs like a mantle - omniscient and oppressive, tugging at my heart as if to hold me back. 9 Tears scratch at my eyes and mingle with the sweat already gathered there. My throat too dry to convulse, twitches with emotion. To say one’s heart breaks is so wonderfully apt - like a dam wall before the flood, the tears well up, and with a convulsive crack and a wracking sob the wall bursts, drowning the night scented jasmine.

9 The lights are always on around 2am in the morning. A television flickers and delivers a barely audible drone. The local cadre are still in the teashop, playing backgammon, attention turned away from the street as they do every night. A cat skulks, suspiciously hair raised in a snarl. Night is the time for cats and games and slow walks down the same cobbled street, with the scent of Jasmine making bearable the litter strewn corners where plastic bottles gather and conspire.

Smash hit. The movie was very well received, and we are already being asked for copies; everyone was glued to it. The Council is learning to pronounce the word ‘viral’, and loving it. TAMASHA THEATRE COMPANY is celebrating its 21st Year with a new production adapted from Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba. We were commissioned to create a striking image that would work hard to appeal to Asian audiences and attract general bookings for a ‘summer slot’ at the Hampstead Theatre. We were inspired by the themes in the play to create an image that was both ‘sexy and summery’ but that would not alienate a more conservative audience.

100% design Development and refinement of a robust visual identity programme the current logotype is comprised of the words (the signature) 100% design london and for sub sectors 100% futures 100% materials 100% detail
The proposal is to drop the word london and create a strong template that will work across a variety of media and be easily adapted to suit all future applications. Our recommendations for the logotype are twofold: Strengthen the logotype to create a more compact and unique device Adopt an additional ‘consumer brand’ device to carry the logotype which would form the basis of a template and make for an easily managed identity system
