WHAT IS THE STUDENTS’ UNION? The Students’ Union exists to make brilliant stuff happen for students here at AUB. Whether that’s through organising freshers’ events and socials, to campaigning to improve your academic experience, AUBSU is here to make your time at university incredible.

WHAT IS THE STUDENTS’ UNION

All three and a half thousand students at AUB (that’s you!) are members of the SU. That’s a powerful force!

5

HOW DOES CHANGE ACTUALLY HAPPEN? Day to day, AUBSU is led by two elected Sabbatical Officers (full-time, paid positions) who work alongside a team of elected Executive Officers (part-time, volunteer positions) and full time staff. The Officer Team doesn’t just appear by magic! There are no names picked from a hat, and no job interview. Every year, you have the chance to choose who ends up leading your Students’ Union, through AUBSU’s Officer Elections. That’s what this little book is all about!

What has AUBSU achieved this year? Microwaves in the canteen Yep, that was us! The Officers worked super hard to get you two of these bad boys installed.

Open Lectures Ever wanted to know how to run your own festival? Or how to start an art publication? Or just want to learn more about world famous artists? AUBSU’s free Open Lectures have covered these topics and more.

And so much more... - Almost 40 clubs, societies and “give it a go” sports for you to get stuck into; - Over 100 Course Reps across all subjects making sure your course is working for you; - Freshers, end of year party, Open Mic nights, tonnes of awesome events!

WHAT IS THE STUDENTS’ UNION

Extended Library Opening Times The SU persuaded AUB to extend the opening time of the Library to 9pm on Friday evenings, meaning you get to really make the most of campus resources. Yay!

BECOMING AN OFFICER So now you know that AUBSU is led by a team of Officers, who get elected by you, the students. But who exactly are the Officers? What do they do? Led by the President and Vice President, the Executive Officer Team is made up of up to 20 elected students, all with different jobs to do. How do you become an Officer? Every March, AUBSU runs elections to choose who leads the SU for the next year. People who want to become Officers run a campaign telling students why they would be best for the role, and students get to vote. There are loads of different, exciting roles to look at, we can guarantee there will be one just for you!

FAQ Who can run for Sabbatical / Executive Committee positions? Any current AUB student can run for any of the available positions, the only exception being roles for which a student must self-define as part of a certain group, or meet other specified criteria.

Where can I find out more about the roles? Come to the Students’ Union and we can answer your questions!

If elected,do I need to do anything before I start? If you’re elected into any of the positions you won’t start your role until July. Before that time, we will ask you to attend a training session to help you get the most out of your role. If you are elected, you will be given all the details!

What are the time commitments? The two Sabbatical positions are full-time (paid), 37 hours a week.

Occasionally the SU will ask for your support at events or to attend meetings. We always expect your studies to come first!

FAQ

The Executive Committee positions are part-time and highly flexible to fit around your studies. On average most Exec Officers give no more than 5 hours a week to their position, however we won’t complain if you decide you want to do more!
