DROWNINGPREVENTIONWEEK:

National Drowning Prevention Week promotes awareness of the drowning prevention problem in Canada and the need for individuals, communities and organizations to take action and educate on water safety in an effort to save lives Drowning is preventable let's work together to stay informed and safe

RESIDENTS RELATIONS E-NEWSLETTER JULY 2023 | ISSUE. 22

Lifejackets are available at our lifejacket loaner stations, at the entrances to the beach, and at the boathouse. They are available free of charge and for all patrons to use

Lifejackets are mandatory when using any ABRA watercraft and are strongly recommended for other water activities

Parents and guardians - please keep your children within arms reach at all times and remember to use active supervision

Auburn House has a large park and it only takes a second for a child to dart off.

The swim area is defined by the buoys, however please be mindful that the water levels vary within the swim area.

For your safety, please do not swim past the buoys, and be cautious when approaching the area as there is a significant drop and it gets very deep.

Always swim with a buddy

If you see someone in distress, there are red rescue tubes located along the beach wall and at the boathouse, throw bags at each lake accessway, reaching poles at the boathouse and fishing dock and rescue life rings on the floating docks.

Remember that many ABRA staff members are trained first aiders. All staff working in the park will have on staff attire.

There are AEDs located in the Zamboni room and in the main lobby of Auburn House. Don't forget

that ABRA staff are not trained

lifeguards Use the facilities at your own risk

Please be mindful when you are sending your small children out on inflatables. The winds can vary and change very suddenly

Know and be confident in your swimming abilities.

Please educate your guests on ABRA policies, procedures and rules, especially surrounding water safety. Many close calls that we experience at Auburn House are with guests of residents as they are not familiar with water safety expectations.

LIFE JACKETS SAVE LIVES

Even if you are a skilled swimmer a life jacket can provide an additional layer of safety. Even skilled swimmers can face unexpected circumstances while in the water Wear a life jacket appropriate for your weight and size

ALWAYS SUPERVISE

02

Never swim alone, and ensure that children are always supervised by a responsible adult when in or around water. Maintain constant visual contact and be within arm's reach to provide immediate assistance if needed

BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES:

SAFE SPACE INITIATIVE

The ABRA Safe Space Initiative is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment, while recognizing the diversity of our residents, guests, staff and community. Through ongoing education, awareness, and outreach, this initiative aims to build a framework for recognizing the rights of all individuals to mutual respect and acceptance of others, regardless of differences, and without biases. Our policies and conduct are signed to hold our residents, patrons and staff accountable to the values of this initiative. This initiative is focused on fostering an inclusive safe space that promotes a sense of belonging in the community where individuals feel represented and dignified.
