Commemorative Days:

Legion Presents: Poppy Stories This year, the Legion is proud to present “Poppy Stories”, an initiative that allows Canadians to scan a lapel Poppy with their smartphone. With every scan, you’ll be introduced to a fallen soldier with a story to remember. Just go to PoppyStories.ca to scan your Poppy! Not only does each Veteran's story recognize their sacrifice, but it also honours their life. The stories expand on where and how soldiers grew up in Canada, their family history, pre-war careers, and even some of their passions. We hope Poppy Stories gives every Canadian someone special to think about this Remembrance Day. Visit PoppyStories.ca on your mobile device to scan your Poppy and meet some inspiring Canadians who gave their lives in service of our country.

Calgary Flames Grade 6 YMCA Membership Helping kids gain independence. Every grade 6 student in Calgary is eligible to receive a free 13-month membership to the YMCA, thanks to the generous support of the Calgary Flames Foundation. The program supports youth as they transition/age out of traditional child care models, develop new interests, and prepare for junior high. It gives youth a safe place to practice independence, develop healthy habits, and establish a sense of belonging in a centre of community that promotes the values of respect, honesty, caring and responsibility. The Grade 6 Membership Program is a great way for students to keep active and gain independence, as members can visit any YMCA locations on their own, without a parent or guardian. *Click the link below to visit ymcacalgary.org to see what’s included in the membership and how to sign up.

Friendly Reminder: Propane Firepits Only

As we ease into the winter season, we kindly want to remind residents that open fires are not permitted on ABRA property, which includes the lake and lake access ways. While most Calgary Lake Communities adhere to an industry standard by following a "No Open Fires" policy, with very few exceptions for propane fires, ABRA is permitting the use of propane fires. We simply ask that all propane fires be removed at the end of the day and stored properly on the homeowners property.

Coats for Calgary is accepting: New and Used Jackets for All Ages Scarves, mitts, toques, snow pants, new winter boots, etc.

NOVEMBER 2023

Coats for Calgary is back at Auburn House! Auburn House is an official drop-off location for Coats for Calgary. Bring in your gently used coats/winter clothing to Auburn House where we have designated a box in the lobby for donations. Coats for Calgary was started in 2009 while Matthew was volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank. Coats for Calgary was to become a community initiative to collect warm winter jackets for Calgary’s most vulnerable. Over the last twelve years, they have been able to collect over 30,000 jackets at businesses around the city. Your donation will assist us in continuing to grow this initiative and help provide warmth and safety for our city’s most vulnerable. 2023 marks the thirteenth annual jacket drive with the hopes to surpass our previous impressive record of over 6,000 jackets donated. With over 40 sponsors and businesses involved this year, the goal is to surpass that amount, a number Mathew never thought would be obtainable when first kicking off the jack drive 13 years ago. Coats for Calgary will be running at Auburn House until January 17th, 2024!

ABRA Holiday Light Display If you visited the park recently or drove into Auburn Bay you've likely seen our maintenance team busy putting up Christmas lights! The ABRA Maintenance team invests a significant amount of time and effort on the light display during the fall season. To ensure the light display is ready to go for the holiday season, the maintenance team works on putting lights on many in-park trees and those near high-traffic areas. Additionally, each year, the team secures permission from the City of Calgary to decorate trees along Auburn Bay Gate, the primary entrance point for the community.

The trees have significantly grown in size over the past few years. Most of them now require the use of a lift to carry out this task, which entails a considerable amount of time going back and forth or maneuvering around the trees. Many of the trees on Auburn Bay Gate are coniferous, and they don't allow as much visibility through them as you might find with deciduous trees in other light displays around the city. Some trees are located on a slight hill, which makes them somewhat harder to reach. They also back onto residential homes, and we are conscious of how the lights might affect the residents. This reason and the consideration of access is why we don't decorate all the way around the trees against the fence line.

COFFEE WITH A UNIFORM November 28, 2023 11:00am - 1:00pm Stop by the Auburn Bay Community Association where your community resource officer (CRO) is hosting Coffee with a Uniform. This event is an opportunity for Auburn Bay residents to get to know their CRO and discuss safety and crime prevention topics relevant to the area while enjoying a cup of coffee.
