CalgaryFlamesGrade6 YMCAMembership Helpingkidsgainindependence.

Every grade 6 student in Calgary is eligible to receive a free YMCA 13-month membership to the YMCA, thanks to the generous support of the Calgary Flames Foundation. The program supports youth as they transition/age out of traditional child care models, develop new interests and prepare for junior high It gives youth a safe place to practice independence, develop healthy habits, and establish a sense of belonging in a centre of community that promotes the values of respect, honesty, caring and responsibility The Grade 6 Membership Program is a great way for students to keep active and gain independence, as members can visit any YMCA locations on their own, without a parent/guardian

ORANGESUBSTANCE UPDATE:

With the help of a local resident, who is an environmental microbiologist with Calgary based OSP Microcheck, the orange substance in Auburn Lake has been identified. It is a slime-forming bacterial genera known as Polyangium. ABRA is confident, based on the studies, that this does not pose a discernible health threat. Polyangium is naturally occurring, and has likely remained dormant for years, but the combination of increasingly hot temperatures and the City of Calgary water restrictions likely provided the ideal environment for these bacteria to grow.

Studies have also linked the Polyangium bacteria to animal fecal matter. This is why ABRA staff and management urge residents to keep all pets off the lake at all times, and please do not encourage wildlife animals to nest on or near the lake.

To the best of our knowledge, the orange substance will likely disappear as the lake temperatures drop. ABRA has reached out to the City of Calgary to ask for an exception to top up our lake in order to prevent future blooms. We will continue to update our community if we receive any new information.

Halloween Safety Tips

Plancostumesthatarebrightand reflective.

Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility during the night.

Candycheckrule

Remind children not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home Candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened.

Optforfacepaintinsteadofamask

Masks can be hazardous They create vision issues for children and make it harder for them to see when it’s already dark outside

Staywelllit

Encourage your trick-or-treaters to carry flashlights or glow sticks to light up the way while they hunt for candy This also helps cars see groups easily throughout the neighbourhood.

AmidstallthefunandfrightsduringHalloween,it'scrucial toprioritizesafetytoensurethatHalloweenremainsa delightfulandmemorableexperienceforeveryone,from kidstoadults Fromcostumeprecautionstotrick-ortreatingsafetymeasures,we'vegotyoucoveredfor Halloween2023withthesesimpletips

Forthoseoldenoughtogoalone:

Establishrulesandboundaries

Design a route that stays within the local area that the trick-or-treaters are familiar with, and set a time that unsupervised trickor-treater groups must return home by Remind trick-or-treaters to only visit homes that have the porch light on, and to only accept treats at the door.

RemainAlertWhileDrivingonHalloween

Make sure to drive extra slow around neighborhoods with children present and keep an eye out for distracted walkers that might dart out into the street. If you’re pulling out of a parking space, look behind you, check your blind spots, and roll down the windows to listen for children

Keepyourownhomesafefortrick-or-treaters

Keep your walkways clear by removing anything that could cause kids to trip or fall on. Make sure all decorations, including inflatables, are securely anchored to prevent them from blowing away and causing hazards.

WhatDoesaBlue HalloweenBucketMean?

Halloween doesn’t look the same for everyone. While you’re passing out candy to all the kids during trick-ortreating this year, keep an eye out for kids with a blue Halloween candy bucket. Recently, the blue Halloween bucket has become an unofficial signifier for kids with autism and autism awareness

We're quite accustomed to the typical Halloween traditions of trick-or-treating. Kids ring the doorbell, utter "trick or treat," and promptly receive a sugary reward However, it's crucial to recognize that some children with autism may be non-verbal

A small dose of information and compassion can make a significant difference for certain children during Halloween!
