SPRING PROGRAMME SEP – DEC 2018

N AT H A N H O M E S T E A D PUKEPUKE

NAU MAI, HAERE MAI — Welcome to Nathan Homestead. We are proud to launch our new seasonal programme, packed full of outstanding and creative local and regional content with a diverse offering for our community.

We offer a wide range of exhibitions, classes, workshops, holiday programmes, concerts, clubs, free family events and more. There is plenty to get involved with and so many great things happening in our local community.

Nathan Homestead is an iconic and treasured community place in Manurewa where people create, celebrate and connect, while surrounded by nature and history. Built in 1925, the historic homestead is a hub for making across a range of creative practices; from performing arts to pottery, horticulture to hip hop, ukulele to opera, yoga to jewellery.

Nathan Homestead is an Auckland Council operated arts and culture facility, proudly supported by the Manurewa Local Board.

A BRIEF HISTORY — The family firm of L.D. Nathan and Co. was started at Kororareka in the Bay of Islands in 1840 by David Lion Nathan, having left England to settle in the Antipodes. In 1841 he moved to Auckland where he married and developed a successful trading and textile business. The Nathan family have been highly influential in the establishment of New Zealand’s Jewish community and many public services we enjoy today. In 1910, David Nathan and his wife Simone built their summer residence in Manurewa and named the property ‘The Hill’. The original wooden villa was destroyed by fire in 1923 and a new permanent residence was rebuilt on the same site in 1925. It included a large estate with a working farm, extensive rose gardens, native bush, ponds and a Norman style water tower, an iconic feature of Manurewa. In 1964, with the development of the Southern Motorway, the estate was sold to accommodate residential growth in South Auckland. The land around the Nathan home was developed as the

Hillpark subdivision, while David Nathan Park and Homestead were held as public assets at the request of the Nathan family. The Nathan House was transformed to accommodate the mayor’s office and additional buildings were brought on-site for staff and visitor services. In 1978 Nathan Homestead was handed back to the community as a council-run arts and culture centre. In 2015 major renovation work commenced to improve the services and unique heritage features of the site, to ensure the centre was able to support the growing needs of our community. In 2017, Te Akitai Waiohua gifted the name Pukepuke (hilly) to David Nathan Park and Homestead, referring to their ancestor, Ihaka Takanini’s description of his land when it was sold to the Crown in 1842, a block that included the David Nathan Park. This name further acknowledges ‘The Hill’, a name affectionately used by the Nathan family for their home in Manurewa, and recognises the contributions of mana whenua and the Nathan family.

A MEMORY OF THE RIVER ELLIOT COLLINS — This exhibition is the result of Elliot Collins’ time as artist in residence at Kriti Gallery in Varanasi, India, earlier this year. His work explores the subtle, often indescribable nature of life by the sacred Ganges. With painting, video and photography, he attempts to capture a city that defies explanation. While aware of his otherness, Collins strove to capture the everyday nature of this indefinable site. A holy place of pilgrimage with its temple bells, chanting parishioners, bathing devotees, 24-hour cremations and the fast-changing embrace of contemporary Indian life. Workshop: Kaleidoscope Dreams Make your own kaleidoscope full of colourful beads from Collin’s trip to India. Decorate the outside and view the changing colours and patterns. Bookings essential.

FUTURE ANIMATORS: 3D ANIMATION WORKSHOP — Come along to a fun introduction to 3D character animation for intermediate to high school ages. Participants are encouraged to come along for the full day, working in pairs for three interactive workshops, including presentations from the digital design students from Manurewa High School. This event is proudly supported by Te Tuhi. Workshops are collective and will include: Sculpting - making 3D digital characters, similar to working with clay. Modelling - more accurate 3D models, like cars, landscapes or architecture. Animating - from simple to advanced animation with a character focus.

Othman, who is from Sulaymaniyah, a city in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, studied fine arts at university. She then moved to New Zealand to be with her husband in 2015.

RELIVING HIAPO: WORK IN PROGRESS CORA-ALLAN WICKLIFFE — Cora-Allan Wickliffe is dedicated to reviving the Niuean form of bark cloth production, or hiapo, which has not been practiced for two generations - the knowledge has largely been lost to Niuean people of today. Used in traditional Niuean burials, Wickliffe was inspired to pursue the traditions of making hiapo so her grandparents can be wrapped in it when they pass away. Her research has led to many places in the Pacific Islands and this exhibition is about her findings, as well as the respect and connection she feels towards this unique Niuean art practice. YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE

YOGA (MULTI-WEEK CLASS)

—

—

This hatha yoga class is designed to focus on flexibility, wellbeing and relaxation, as well as encouraging an awareness of posture and breathing. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, and if possible avoid eating a meal for 2 or 3 hours before class. Bring a yoga mat or a foam bed roll, a large towel and a light blanket for relaxation at the end of the class.

The regular practice of yoga brings immense benefits to body and mind by intergrating and harmonising the two. The mind will become light, creative, joyful and balanced. Yoga practice increases vitality and strength, improves your breathing, posture, balance and co-ordination, as well as flexibility and muscle tone. It will help to reduce tension and anxiety as well as improving your sleep.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME — Nathan Homestead offers fun, active, creative and educational school holiday programmes for children aged 5 - 14 years. For over 20 years our programme has provided arts-focused learning, situated within the grounds of David Nathan Park and Nathan Homestead. Full of adventure, creativity and discovery your child is sure to be active and happy in a safe and well-supported environment. The programme includes trips, specialised theme days and mix ‘n’ match days packed full of cooking, science, sports and take-home arts and crafts activities. Specialist workshops in visual and performing arts will inspire young artists aged 8 to 14 years, providing high-quality arts tutoring on sustained projects — from painting and sculpture to drama and dance. Whether making a unique work of art or being part of the cast for a new play on stage, these workshops are a great way for young people to grow their skills, meet new friends and discover hidden talents. Contact Nathan Homestead to book your child in for a great holiday adventure.

KAURI KIDS EARLY CHILDCARE CENTRE AND OSCAR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME — The kauri is among the mightiest of trees, yet begins as a tiny seed. We believe at Kauri Kids that with love, care and nurturing, all children are full of the potential to be as mighty as the kauri tree. We work in partnership with you to ensure your child grows, is inspired to do their very best and always achieves their individual goals and aspirations. Auckland Leisure’s 11 Kauri Kids centres are conveniently located across Auckland, and each centre is staffed by a team of committed and caring early childhood educators. We follow Te Whāriki – the New Zealand early childhood education curriculum – and offer a minimum of 20 hours free ECE. WINZ subsidies may also be available for your family, visit the WINZ website for more information. Nathan Homestead hosts a local Out of School Care and Recreation (OSCAR) after school care service for children up to the age of 13 years, with a focus on play and recreation (rather than schooling) and providing care while parents do other things - work, training or taking time out for their own activities. Please contact Kauri Kids and OSCAR through Auckland Council Pools and Leisure Services. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
