LINDA COOK — WITHIN THE THRESHOLD — Literature references liminality to illustrate escape realms or veils of passage such as C.S Lewis’ wardrobe or the mirror through which Alice willingly steps, entering into another realm. With this installation you are invited to move beyond self and explore a place of in-between-ness. Form and colour are utilised to create a space where the mind can travel within and without the present reality. On entering the work, you become part of the work, changing both the spatial and visual constructs of the corridor. GALLERY 1 12 DEC - 9 JAN

MARCIA SOANES — AUCKLAND CITY STREETSCAPES — Auckland City Streetscapes is an exhibition featuring self-taught local artist, Marcia Soanes, who's love of quirky old Auckland buildings is evident in her work. Influenced by artists including Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper and George Baloghy. Soanes has created her own unique style using vibrant colours which succeed in capturing a moment in time. Soanes has lived around Eden Terrace for the last 39 years and has attended several painting and drawing classes here at Studio One Toi Tū. GALLERY 2 12 DEC - 9 JAN

DANA DADI — BE LOVED COLOURS — Dadi’s artworks have been described as “dynamic paintings full of symbolism and expression playing with composition." Her artworks have the ability to convey feelings of happiness. Dadi was born in Persia and, at the age three, moved to Sweden with her family. C U R AT E D B Y V E R I T Y JOHNSON, SUSANNE AXELSSON & COCO JANSSEN — YWCA AUCKLAND: 18X18 — Being eighteen years old isn’t for the fainthearted. 18X18 delves into the perspectives of eighteen Auckland girls on the brink of adulthood. It charts their turbulent, exciting and daunting experiences, and paints a portrait that reveals some of the most pressing issues facing teenage girls today. Through its honest, gritty and heartfelt storytelling, the exhibition celebrates and challenges the stereotypes of 'young people these days.'

TIMOTHY CLARKE — GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD — Timothy Clarke became a practicing artist after a car accident twenty years ago. This exhibition was inspired by Clarke’s love for the buildings of Auckland. He responds to the changing landscape of the city by recording some of the most iconic buildings through colourful paintings referencing kiwiana. GALLERY 2 16 JAN - 13 FEB OPENING: WED 15 JAN, 5PM

NAOMI AZOULAY — WOMAN OF VALOUR — Badass females embracing equity and addressing cultural gender imbalances. A series of fierce, colourful, delicate and detailed collage works, which reject the religious iconography they are based on. The meaning of the works morph as Azoulay, an Aotearoa/Middle Eastern– based artist, layers references from historical eras, diverse cultures, and elements of wellknown art. The result? Engaging and dramatic, contemporary works, in which the subjects stand on their own, please themselves and seek approval from no one.

LO U I S B R E TA N A — BLESSED ART THOU — Spain used Catholicism as a major colonial tool, subjugating native Filipinos into the pious obedience of a European god; syncretising or eradicating the indigenous culture and its ‘un-Christian’ beliefs and practices. Monotheism justified righteous oppression and supremacist ideology that we still see today. By sharing the blessings of ancient Philippine deities, this exhibition hopes to break down religious territoriality and demonstrates that many faiths can coexist in harmony and good will.

S A R A H YAT E S — M A K E B O O B S G R E AT A G A I N — For this exhibition, artist and ex-race car driver Sarah Yates asked a group of women to draw either their car or their breasts. She then took these drawings and turned them into hand-sewn cushions made with upcycled woollen blankets. By bringing these two key images together, Yates explores how gender roles are portrayed in society and creates a space for women to reflect on and enjoy their bodies.

GEMMA STEWART — DEAD LEGENDS — Five years ago, Gemma Stewart discovered the creative release that cross stitching brought her and was inspired to embark on an ambitious project, an exhibition that would celebrate deceased, golden-era hip-hop artists and their lyrics in cross stitch. Although faced with the challenge of keeping her vision alive, stitch by stitch she has realised her exhibition.

LAURA ALLEN — SECRET GARDEN — Allen's embroidered botanical illustrations showcase the undesirable parts of nature which we so often try to remove or hide - imperfections, sickness and death; those classic reminders of our own mortality. In art and in life - curling leaf tips, limp stems, dead leaves and dropped blossoms all tend to be discarded while pristine leaves and new blooms are favoured. These works highlight a secret garden full of things we usually choose to discard or ignore.

LUNA HARRIS (AGE 7) & THE YOUTH COLLECTIVE — LIFE AS I SEE IT — Harris shares the Sidewalk Gallery with a curated collection of works by young artists from neighbouring local schools. We invite you to wander by and appreciate the bright, colourful and diverse points of view from a talented range of young local artists. Nau mai, haere mai.

DANIEL LARSEN-BARR — WHY WRITE? — Why Write? begins by examining a selection of poems. By breaking down the themes, structures and vocabulary in other texts, we can use those features to improve our own work in all modes of writing. We produce short pieces which we share with the group. Each participant receives tailored and detailed feedback on their effort. Because writing is a form of self-expression, it can be more than just fun; it translates thoughts and emotions into words. Anyone can benefit from these techniques.
