7. Small Uzbek needlework bag, Uzbekistan, first half 20th century, 9in. x 7½in. 23cm. x 19cm. Red cotton ground, the front of the fold-over top exquisitely embroidered in coloured silks; the edges of the bag overcast in yellow silk. Cf. Harvey, HJ. Turkmen collection of caps, trappings and other items, all late 19th/early 20th century, comprising: three embroidered skull caps; child’s red cotton embroidered hat; an embroidered tri-angular cap extension (used to protect the nape of the neck and the long plait); a child’s green and red velvet bokche with printed cotton lining; velvet scissors case, printed with floral boteh and a printed cotton and felted wool decorative camel cover adorned with hawk feathers, bones, coins and other items, 71in. 180cm. long. 15. Fulani blanket, Mali, west Africa, second half 20th century, 97in. x 50in. 247cm. x 127cm. Some holes in places. Narrow white wool widths joined together and woven with dark brown and earthy red bands, embroidered in dark brown with geometric motifs pertaining to the myths and beliefs of the Fulani peoples. Two similar blankets were offered in our sale of 12th July 2017, Lot 283. £100-150 (+18% BP*)

Lot 16 Lot 11 11. Greek Island embroidered skirt fragment, Crete, 18th century, 26in. x 16in. (max.) 66cm. x 41cm. (max.) Professionally laid down on linen and on a stretcher. Probably a fragment of a Cretan skirt border, the motifs are derived from Venetian designs and our piece depicts birds with open wings; tiny stylized lions and other animals, crowns, flowers, harpies and fishes. The silk embroidery in a beautiful palette of terracotta, gold, green with dark blue details. Many repairs. cf. Taylor, R. Embroidery of the Greek Islands. p 109 where an earlier fragment in a similar palette and design is illustrated. £200-300 (+18% BP*)

14. Moroccan burnous (woollen hooded cape), north Africa, circa 1920s. Dark brown plainweave hooded cape with orange plainweave panel to back, embroidered in brightly coloured wools with plaited tasssels in places. Unlined. Some holes and damage. The burnous is a traditional cape worn by the Berber peoples of Morocco. The colour is usually white, beige or dark brown with white being worn for ceremonial events. £400-500 (+18% BP*)

Persian Jewish circular cover, early 20th century, 31in. 79cm. dia. embroidered in coloured silks and occasional sequins with inscriptions, flowers and peacocks, lined with printed cotton of tiny floral sprigs. Two Rajasthan embroideries, north India, circa 1930s-50s, the first a coverlet, undyed cotton ground embroidered in coloured silks with shisha-work details depicting Ganesh among flowers and foliage; elephants, horses; peacocks; bicycles; gramophones; various figures and other motifs; appliquéd borders; lined and with hole to back; the second a toran (door surround) 80in. wide x 16in. deep at the top with long side pieces; similarly embroidered and with similar motifs and an inscription. Lot 23 23. Indian embroidered cover, in Mughal style, first half 19th century, 95in. x 72in. 241cm. x 183cm. The fine creamy/beige cotton ground finely embroidered in floss silks in chain stitch and tambour stitch with a central medallion with animals in the outer circle, a bird in the centre, the ground embroidered with flowers, pomegranates and birds; the border of trailing flowers and pomegranates; trailing floral guards. Some holes and damages with repairs and conservation with fabric patches in places verso. A very attractive cover, possibly once a summer carpet. £300-500 (+18% BP*)

Lot 19 19. Three decorative and reversible Kantha quilts, west Bengal, India, modern, each approximately 84in. x 54in., 214cm. x 137cm. Composed of vintage cottons pieced together and hand quilted with running stitch; one soft yellows and pinks; one soft yellows; pink and green; the third bright greens, yellows, white and blues with pale pinks the other side. The Emperor was very attached to his team of eight horses, used for the Emperor’s extensive travels around his realm and after their faithful service they were then turned out to grass to enjoy their retirement, as depicted here in this rug. Slight colour run.The camel mihrab with a central column flanked on each side by kejebe motifs which are repeated in the very narrow camel hand panels above the prayer arch. Curiously, this rug has dark blue guards woven with the ‘curled leaf’ motif most often encountered on Turkmen rugs, as also is the kejebe pattern. £200-300 (+18% BP*)

Lot 451 451. Baluchi rug, Khorasan, north east Persia, late 19th century, 4ft. 1in. x 2ft. 6in. 1.25m. x 0.76m. Overall wear with corrosion to dark brown; losses to ends; rewoven outer guard lower right side. This rug is woven with the rectangular panel design similar to that found on two examples in the published literature: Opie, J. op. cit. p. 243; 13.24 and attributed to Timuri and Diehr, F. M. op. cit. pl. 45. It should be noted that our example does not have flatweave ends or the borders that one would expect. It is quite possible that our example may have been part of a larger rug at some time. £300-400 (+18% BP*)

Rows of boteh on an ivory field; earthy red main border and pale blue guards. cf. Parham, C. Masterpieces of Fars Rugs, p. 131, pl. 44 and 41 for remarkably similar rugs. The mihrab with kejebe design repeated in the camel hand spandrels. Together with two Baluchi Mushwani khorjin faces, late 19th century, each 1ft. 2in. x 1ft. 6in. 0.36m. x 0.46m., some wear and old moth damage. Piled both sides with wool tassels trimmed with blue beads; leather loops to the flatweave tops; the second two Baluchi Mushwani khorjin faces joined together to make a rectangular panel, early 20th century, 3ft. 9in. x 1ft. 10in. 1.14m. x 0.56m. Terms & Conditions of Sale Affecting purchasers and other attending the sale premises. 1. Purchasers will be deemed: a) To have inspected their lots prior to the sale; and b) To have accepted that lots are sold with all faults and imperfections specifically mentioned or not irrespective of whether they have bid in person, by commission or through an agent. 2. All goods are second hand and sold without warranty unless otherwise stated in the sale catalogue or by the auctioneers from the rostrum. Any implied warranty, condition or other term is excluded except where to do so would be unlawful. 3. The auctioneers undertake that care has been taken to see that catalogue descriptions are accurate and reliable, however these are matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact. 4. The auctioneers act as agents to the vendor and shall not incur liability to any purchaser for any statement, representation or warranty as to title, quality or otherwise of any lot made on behalf of and with the vendors authority. 5. The auctioneers reserve on behalf of themselves and the vendors the following rights: a) To sell subject to a reserve price b) To bid on behalf of a vendor and/or purchasers c) To refuse any bid d) To rearrange, consolidate, divide, add or withdraw any lots or vary the order of the sale e) To exclude any person from the premises if there be good reason to do so. 6. The auctioneers shall regulate the bidding and shall determine from time to time the appropriate increment needed to advance the bidding. 7. The person making the highest accepted bid shall be the purchaser as defined in these conditions 8. If a dispute arises as to any bidding then at the discretion of the auctioneers either: a) The lot to which the disputed bid relates shall immediately be put up again, or b) The auctioneer shall determine the dispute and his decision shall be final and binding on all parties.

9. a) At the fall of the hammer the purchaser is required to give his own name (or where applicable his paddle number). If he has bid on behalf of another person, company or organisation he should make this clear to the auctioneer at the time. b) If, and as required the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer the purchaser shall also give his address and/or the address if the principal and/or pay to the auctioneer all or part of the purchase price plus VAT and buyer’s premium. c) Any such payment at the fall of the hammer may be treated, at the auctioneer’s discretion, as a general deposit against all purchases, made by the purchaser on the day. d) All lots must be paid for in cash, or in other manners acceptable to the auctioneers on the day of the sale and before delivery is given. e) Failure by the purchaser to comply with sub clause (a) and (b) shall entitle the auctioneer to cancel the sale and, at his discretion, to immediately re-offer the lot in question for sale by auction. 10. No transfer of lots or sub-sale by any purchaser is recognised by the auctioneers. Purchasers shall main liable under these conditions in respect of their own purchase under the sale. 11. Private treaty sales shall be subject to these conditions of sale where applicable. 12. All lots will be at the purchasers risk from the fall of the hammer: Purchasers are therefore advised to check that they have adequate insurance cover. 13. Purchasers who pay by cheque will not normally be permitted to remove goods until their cheques have cleared through the bank. Whether removal is permitted or not. Ownership of goods will not be deemed to pass to the purchaser until their cheque has cleared. 14. All lots must be cleared from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense by the time stipulated or agreed by the auctioneers. 15. a) If a purchaser fails to comply with any of the preceding conditions the auctioneers may cause the lot in respect of which the failure is made to be resold by public sale without warranty or reserve and without notice to the purchaser.

b) If upon resale as aforesaid a lower price is obtained foe any lot that was obtained on the first sale, the difference in price together with all costs and charges attending the resale shall be a debt due from the purchaser in default at the first sale. c) Alternatively the auctioneers may, at their discretion, store the lot and recover reasonable charges for doing so from the purchaser. 16. Rescission Notwithstanding any terms of these conditions if, within 14 days after the sale, the auctioneers have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in their view the lot is a deliberate forgery and that within 21 days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer and if the auctioneers consider in the light of the entry in the catalogue, that the lot is a deliberate forgery than the sale of the lot will be rescinded and purchase price refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter will be settled by arbitration. 17. Online Bidding Netherhampton Salerooms offer an online bidding service via the-saleroom.com for bidders who cannot attend the sale.
