a place to call home

Tony & Wendy decided to make !Audacious City Church their home and here’s why...

What is there not to like?! We love !Audacious. We have been part of !ACC for 9 months now and it has flown by. We seriously cannot think of one thing not to like. We love the leaders, the people, the worship, the kids work, the teaching, the media, the coffee and there is so much more going on than that! As newcomers we found the DNA Active and Partner courses a fantastic way to get to know how !ACC ticks and mid-week Wednesday church is a great way to build relationships. We are now in a privileged position to lead a Life Group in Sale (quick plug!) and so excited to see that grow and develop. More than anything we are planted in a church where we can grow closer to God, to thrive and prosper in His plans and purposes for our lives and the awesome future of this very special house. Thanks !ACC

why i love my life group Darlene has been coming to !ACC for 2 years and has made her Life group a key part of her week. Here’s why....

I love our Life Group . I look forward to Life Group Wednesdays; great coffee, food, conversation, fun, laughter and the opportunity to chat about stuff going on in your world. You get to see the best bits of Sundays preach on DVD, then chat and discuss pre-set questions. This helps me firstly remember what God's saying to us as a church (not that I have a bad memory, oops, yes I do!) Secondly, helps me to process life application. Life group is extended family who can laugh, cry and experience all the emotions in between with you. I would recommend that if you haven’t been or don’t belong to a Life Group yet, that you make it one of your goals for this new season, there’s one meeting near you. Thanks to all in my Life Group for all the fun and laughter over the past year and here’s to another fun year. Love, Darlene

4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Attend a protest (and try get in the local paper for it)

Argue with an arts student about the validity of their course! (it’s just funny) Seriously consider never leaving (I mean seriously, to the point of talking it through with your parents) Hug a professor (preferably the one who everyone else can’t stand) Discover a local band (you don’t know how big they could get) Wear your PJ’s to a lecture (but carry yourself like your wearing a suit) Throw a proper dinner party (10 plus guests and food that requires a recipe) Get into a gig for free (without a crew t-shirt on) Stay awake for 72 hours for some crazy reason (just so you can say you did)

Top Ten tips for making a true success of Uni 1. 2.

Collect loose change in a pot (you’ll be very thankful more than once)

3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Find a church and commit to it (you will both bring the best out in each other)

Find some friends (no not the first 5 people you see, find some proper friends, people who genuinely care for you. These people will probably in your life forever) Write a blog / journal (make some sense of your days before you sleep) Budget well (don’t be a scrooge, but don’t be stupid either) Aim to get your assignments in a week early (you can’t describe the feeling) Find a place where you can actually study (it’s called wisdom) Ask for help (we all need help from time to time) Get a job (even if it’s one shift a week, it keeps you in tune with the real world) Think about Masters and PhD’s – (seriously… why not??) twitter.com/accurbanuni

YOUNG ADULTS

adults Hannah Raeside, designer, maker and all round arty lady tells us...

why friends and a fine english brew are good for the soul couples, singles, students, professionals; the list goes on. It’s vital that we make time to socialise; that we’re brave enough to invite ourselves The amazing thing about the along; that we’re open enough local Church is that it really takes all sorts. If you’re sporty to invite people for tea; that we make space to get involved or a single parent, a newlywhen the opportunity arises wed couple, if you love art, and to create opportunity hate shopping or have your when it doesn’t, not for the Pro Evo Grade 8, you’ll find sake of it. Not so that we can others like you. There is have one big christian social nothing more refreshing and club. Not to be exclusive, or encouraging than finding comfortable, but because it someone who shares the really matters! It’s Biblical to same interests, outlook or sense of humour. (The flip side spend time with one another and to lighten each others of this, of course, is that you rub shoulders with people you loads. It’s about being that never thought you’d get along much-needed word of Godly wisdom in someone’s ear, with. These can be the most and receiving the same good valuable friendships of all). advice in return. To be in As young adults we are at others lives, to share and a stage in life that is unlike encourage, laugh and cry... any other. We have a wealth To really belong. of experiences and lifestyles to draw from. Just-out-ofschool 18s, young-at-heart 30 somethings, parents, headache having spoken to anyone and everyone, remembering names, getting involved.

Now, any friend of mine will know that for me to write about how much I love a cup of tea would be a complete lie. Or someone slipped me a tenner. Make mine a hot chocolate please! But whether it’s over a brew, walking the dog or sat on the sofa, the fact still remains that quality time spent with friends is something that can’t be beaten; it really does you good! At !ACC I have learned the value of getting linked in; spending time chatting and laughing and investing in friendships - the value of real connection. GENERATIONS

Why Generations? What is Generations, who’s it for and why bother? Generations is Kids Rock, Urban Youth, Urban Uni, and Young Adults. It’s about one generation standing together, no matter the age, to say we can make a real difference in our worlds. UNITY I see people of all ages united in one cause doing whatever it takes to fulfil our mission. I see a generation living, standing, believing together. I see a generation living beyond the borders of their own life, beyond their small circle, living for their generation. Why Generations? It’s about unifying the ages, bringing them together to give us a worldview wider than our own tunnel. I would love it, if you would say I want to make a difference in my generation to make Generations Night a priority, to be a part of a generation passionate about really changing the world we live in by standing together. MOBILISATION I see Generations equipped and empowered to make Church happen. Generations is about you finding home and then taking responsibility. It’s about helping you to see you have a part to play. Generations really should be the engine room that brings

28 •

!ACC

the power to drive things forward. Being planted in the House of God isn’t just about attendance, it’s about making things happen. Generations is about firing you up, helping you find a place to serve and then bringing force and momentum to everything in the life of !ACC. DISCIPLESHIP I see a generation being discipled, taught, helped and resourced to live victorious lives. That we can overcome the obstacles of past, and stride forward in power. Generations is helping you to become a better follower of Jesus. The biggest and most fundamental decisions are made before we hit 30, foundations are set and the normal of the rest of your life is created. Generations is about raising the bar for a future generation, helping you to make incredible, audacious lifestyle choices that enable God to do even greater through us. CREATiVITY Lastly generations is about releasing and expressing the creativity of Heaven. Every single one of us has the potential to create, to design, to write, to express an aspect of the Kingdom of Heaven that releases a new revelation of our Creator God. Generations is about inspiring creative expression, creative decision

making, creative solutions and creative lives. Don’t be the one that misses out, be a part of a Generation that creates a new normal.

Now active in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Eastbourne, Kent, Barnsley, Sheffield, Salford, Bury, Burnley Billingham, Glasgow, Strathaven & Aberdeen.

The first ilovemygen national campaign running throughout December. Change the culture in your neighbourhood by planning a street secret Santa ending with a Christmas Party in your home.

17th October Meet at The Centre 2:00pm

Today I was enjoying a posh coffee with my family and friends. My husband went and paid for our bill but as he did I remembered the ‘ilovemyen’ card that I had placed in my purse. I keep them there to remind me not only to talk about loving my generation

but to ACT on it. I spoke to a waitress at the till and told her that I would like to pay for the young women's bill near to our sofa. The waitress was amazed – infact the rest of the staff came over and wanted to know more. I ended up with five members of staff

intrigued as to why I would be so kind. There was now a real buzz about the place and I loved it! I set out to try and make an impact on the lives of two young women but ended up inspiring others in the process!

9th December Meet at The Centre 7:00pm

I REALLY do love my gen!

WEDNESDAY CHURCH

EAT FISH Stuart Keir, Associate Minister here at !ACC talks to us about eating fish!

!ACC

WEDNESDAY CHURCH

“Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it as they watched him.” Luke 24:41-43 Imagine the scene. Jesus has died, the disciples know he’s dead, some of the women in their group claim they’ve seen him, two guys have just returned late at night and said they’ve just been for a walk and a meal with him; and then - out of nowhere - Jesus appears. The guys are freaked out. Jesus, the greatest teacher who ever walked the planet, seeks to talk to them about how they are feeling. No response. The Bible describes him as the “wonderful counsellor”, but even his words aren’t getting through to them. He then shows them his hands and his feet, nail holes clearly visible. It’s tangible evidence

It is not about superheroes, superstars, the realm of fantasy or the fiction of Hollywood life. that he is who he says he is; he did die and is alive. But no - still nothing. Joy, wonder and down right fear are the emotions they are feeling right now. You can imagine the silence of the room as Jesus holds out his hands, points to his feet and realises this is going nowhere. So he asks “Do you have anything to eat?” They hand him a piece of fish and, in absolute silence, watch him eat it.

It wasn’t his miraculous arrival in the room It wasn’t the stories that the women from the tomb or the men from Emmaus told It wasn’t his nailed pierced hands and feet It was a normal everyday action of eating fish that caused the disciples to believe that this was Jesus. Leading people does have moments where you tell incredible stories. There are miracles that occur that you thank God you were a part of and seeing the marks of the sufferings of Jesus should raise an incredible sense of thankfulness as we celebrate and reflect in communion. But it is the normal everyday actions where you truly lead people the most, as you lead them in being people. It is not about superheroes, superstars, the realm of fantasy or the fiction of Hollywood life. Those around you need to see a real person and they need you to be honest and real with them, not pretending to be something you are not. This is the place where they will accept you and your leadership. When you are perfect you are saying “don’t touch me” and keep people at a distance; but when you do something ordinary like eat fish with people; they see you. So for all you cool urbanites; get out there and eat sushi! And those of you with a low risk quotient, get thee to Harry Ramsdens, eat fish with people and let them be with you.

OUR SPACIOUS PLACE

MAIN BUILDING

OUR SPACIOUS PLACE

June brought the official end to our "i-Imagine year”; 12 months of giving into a building fund through faithful donations, creative fundraising and entrepreneurial ideas. Rachel and Adam Atkins put on an amazing show at the Centre with their band, Milo Cho, supported with live comedy and music from Ian Henderson, Dave and Rob Fidler and others. Rob Bishop cycled 99 miles across the country. Pastor Glyn completed a motorcycling tour of Mongolia and Emma Johnston hiked accross

Snowdonia. Our very own Urban Youth have also been fundraising throughout the year. But they haven’t been blindly giving without any vision for the future. Instead, they have caught a real sense of what God is doing in their city. At !ACC, we firmly believe that God’s plan is to see a Church so numerically large that it would cause people to wonder what could possibly draw thousands of people together on a Sunday. All of this means a buzz is created, the Church has a real presence in the city centre and ultimately people’s lives are changed for the better!

So, the !Audacious family have donned their “future glasses” and set about practically working towards this vision for bigger and better in the life of the Church. “i-Imagine” giving continues to be a big part of the life of !ACC and we are starting to see visible movement in all that God has in store for the church. Our faith that He was working behind the scenes to provide us with a new facility has become an excitingly tangible reality and with a real sense of things to come, so looking to our new season...

OUR SPACIOUS PLACE

SECOND auditorium

Presenting the new, soon-tobe-improved !Audacious City Church building!

ladies & gentlemen, you won’t be queuing for the loo for much longer!

The space is VAST. The new auditorium, in it’s first incarnation, will comfortably seat 1000 people. This means that major conferences can take place in our own venue, as well as giving us the capacity to keep growing on Sundays. This vision of our exciting new future includes a fantastic childcare facility, coffee shop area, a highspecification sound recording studio, improved film and media facilities, ample parking, function-specific offices... the list goes on! And

A bigger building isn’t just about practicality. The potential for our A-Teams community projects and other social outreach also starts to grow; new ideas are being formed as the option to facilitate exciting new ventures becomes available. This increase in space means an increase in faith. So get ready to join us as we move forward into a more spacious place, there is a complete refurbishment to do and a city to be impacted!

WEDNESDAY CHURCH

I’m not good with geography, how far is that? I rode a total of 99 miles, we got a little lost at times!

Rob and his wife Rebecca Bishop live in Moston, Manchester, with their daughter Olivia. Rob works for British Triathlon as a Regional Programme Manager and Lead Child Protection Officer. On 11th September, Rob hopped on his bike and pedalled his way from Gretna, Scotland, all the way along the coast to Newbiggin to raise money for !Audacious City Church’s new building. We caught up with Rob after the event to find out how it went. Tell us what you did? I cycled from Gretna in Scotland on the Irish Sea coast to Newbiggin by the sea in Northumberland on the North Sea coast in one day.

Did you have any troubles along the route? Yeah hills! I never look at a route profile to find out how hilly it is before I go, it was a bit of a shock! We also had the little problem of getting lost a few times! I also ended up on the A69 a main route between Newcastle and Carlisle for 7½ miles, that was not fun, a fair few trucks whizzing past you! What bike did you use? I guess it would be a “racer” to some people but to be slightly more technical it was my road bike, a Ridley Compact. How was the day… and the British weather? The day was great, we drove up to Gretna, leaving Manchester at 6.30 in the morning. The weather was awful when we left but by the time we got to Scotland it was sunny-ish! For the rest of the day the sun shone and I even managed a little top up on the tan. The wind was also in our favour!

roads there’s not much that happens, however my support vehicle managed to get stuck behind a bull and we did come across a ford after 20 miles which caused us a few problems! Did you have people out supporting you along the way? No one on the route but Becci (my wife) and Olivia (my daughter) who were in the support vehicle behind. How about in the lead up to the day? I had massive support from my cycling team mates and close friends in Manchester. What made you think of doing this for i-imagine? I’m called to ride a bike, GOD has given me this talent and I firmly believe in the vision the Church has for the city. How long did you fundraise for before the day, and how much did you raise? We started raising money in July, and have raised £1011.54 so far. People can still give at www.justgiving.com/ibike, or can give to the !Audacious City Church i-Imagine building fund.

Have any unplanned adventures? Travelling along the country
