Creativity in Education This topic is always a key issue and something we at Audiation Magazine believe in strongly. The creative arts are constantly pushed aside in studies. Everyone is pushed in the core subjects, which are very important, but this does not mean the arts are just for fun. Primary Education (ages 6-11): Music, art and drama are really just presented as fun lessons to let loose. The children perform now and then to show their parents and friends that they're enjoying the creativity. Secondary Education (ages 11-14) The schedule for the arts are thinned and although the pupils are taught a little more, they're not really pushed to engage. This is the end for majority of performances except on special occasions. Secondary Education (ages 14-16) The last two years, unless the student has been around the creative arts outside of school, they will generally drop these subjects. This is the main point when, if chosen, the student will now get fully pushed to get those high grades. College (ages 16-18) This is where, if chosen, the creative arts get full attention and actual passion put into the work and courses. In general, if the student wants to go for a creative sector, unless they're getting outsider help, activities etc - It's sure going to be difficult. And if you think there is no money in these sectors, think again. The summer months especially is where music really steps up through festivals raking in revenue from up to almost 10 million attendees. Ever sold a great piece of artwork? The average large painting from a new artist could fetch up to ÂŁ1,500. There is a huge potential, but without being taught the basics, people are forced to either attempt it themselves with little knowledge or just forget their dreams entirely.

MUSIC ON FILM Capturing the essence of a genre of music on film has always been something of an elusive task. The formula that works the best for Hollywood is usually to focus on a single artist through the medium of the biopic, where big stars can flex their acting skills inhabiting the roles of legacy artists, delivering the dramatic narrative as expected. Bringing a whole genre of music to the big screen however, is notably more difficult - as anybody who suffered through the recent trailer for Zac Efron’s mantra to EDM ‘We Are Your Friends’ can attest. It’s a rarity if a director gets it right – and even if they do, the results are far from timeless as scenes and sounds can date almost as quickly as the camera stops rolling. Thankfully, the one area of cinema that treats music genres and scenes well is in the form of documentaries. With more being released with each successive year, we take a look at some of the essential classics from the past
This seminal trilogy of documentaries from director Penelope Spheris is probably best remembered for its second instalment, The Metal Years. Documenting the rise of the American hard rock and heavy metal scene in the mid-1980s, it features performances and interviews from some of the leading artists at the time including Aerosmith, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth and many more. The level of debauchery and excess on show has become renowned, and in retrospect the film feels more antiquated than ever, especially with regards to gender politics. But it also has some sobering and candid accounts of the darker side of the LA dream, with interviews about addiction and death from drug abuse. In recent years it has been cited as a reason for the death of glam metal and the rise of grunge in the early 1990s, although that is probably down to the cyclical nature of music more than anything – coming full circle with recent ‘ironic’ takes on the genre in the guise of bands like Steel Panther.
Paris In Burning (1991)
Decline Of Western Civilisation (1988) 20
Before Madonna co-opted vogueing for her own career-defining hit, the ballroom scene of the mid-1980s owned it. New York was home to some of the largest drag balls in America that brought www.AudiationMagazine.com
artists and performers from across the LGBTI spectrum to its dancefloors. A fascinating insight into a highly organised counter-cultural movement, Paris Is Burning is a meditation not just on gender and sexuality but race, class and poverty. Drag is an art form that has significant cultural resonance, as the adoption of its style, motifs and performance by mainstream artists over the years Standing In The Shadows Of attests. Motown (2002)
Scratch (2001)
Director Paul Justman documents the remarkable story of the Funk Brothers, a group of session musicians that Motown’s Berry Gordy selected to be the label’s house band. The band played on the majority of the imprint’s recordings from 1959 through to 1972, and yet their legacy was largely unknown outside of soul connoisseurs. To emphasise their importance to modern music, it’s amazing to note they played on more global hits than the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Beach Boys combined; it was their sound defined the golden era of soul music for fans worldwide, influencing a whole new generation of musicians.
Hip Hop has been the best documented genre of the last thirty years, and many of the finer examples of film-making around its key artists could have been included here. Scratch was ahead of the curve however; director Doug Pray attempts to distil the essence of what Hip Hop is into a cohesive narrative, drawing on interviews with a huge range of its biggest advocates. Breaking down the elements of the genre into its component parts, it is a compelling document of the scene’s origins in the late 1970s through to its prominence in the late 1990s and beyond – although given the rise of the digital DJ it’s hard not to view some of the film’s optimism about the health of turntablism’s future Moog (2004) without a wry smile.

Tracing a similar unsung hero of music, piece to the rise of footwork it also has Moog documents the electronic interest, and is a testament to the instrument pioneer, Bob Moog. Hans creativity of the American inner city. Fjellestad’s film eschews traditional narration in favour of interviews with artists who have benefitted from his visionary inventions, including Luke Vibert and Stereolab. Its intention is not to wholly document the rise of the synthesiser in modern music, but more act as a tribute to a man whose work had a profound impact on the birth of dance music and beyond. Anvil : The Story Of Anvil (2008) A trend developed toward the end of the last decade, in searching out artists that might have fallen off the musical radar and re-telling their stories and inevitable redemption. The most well-known of these is Searching For Sugarman (2011), but for our money the heart-warming tale of heavy metal’s hardest working losers is the winner. Rewind to the late 1980s and Anvil were tipped to be bigger Rize (2005) than Bon Jovi, touring with some of the biggest bands at the time. Then they Rize documents the development of two disappeared. The documentary recounts forms of dance, Clowning and Krumping, the reality of being a touring musician from the late 1990s LA scene to the against the demands of living in the real present. The film follows performers from world when your big break doesn’t come. both movements leading up to a dance Inspirational and hilarious in equal clash called the Battle Zone, and explores measure, The Story Of Anvil had the roots of the styles through something for all fans of music who interviews and historical context. Whilst dreamed about making it big. critics on the whole were receptive on its release it was called out for not commenting on the surrounding social issues that the scene was born from – seemingly missing the point that you can celebrate a culture without having to denigrate it as well. The Punk Singer (2013)
Don Argott’s film is one of those rare occurrences where real life takes over the film. Beginning as a documentation of US heavy metal band Lamb of God’s 2012 world tour, circumstance takes over when lead singer Randy Blythe is arrested and charged with the manslaughter of a fan in the Czech Republic. The film mutates into a gripping legal drama as Blythe fights to clear his name and his fellow band members fight to hold the band together.
Sini Anderson’s film on the work of Kathleen Hanna, who fronted Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, offers up a meditation on gender in music alongside the narrative arc of her career. A leading proponent of the Riot Grrrl movement in the 1990s, her commitment to placing women at the forefront of the industry has never wavered – even limiting the number of male contributors to the film itself. Offering both archival performance I’m Tryna Tell Ya (2014) footage and current interviews with some of the leading female artists in rock music including Kim Gorden and Carrie Just Jam TV dons Tim & Barry visit Brownstein, it’s a refreshing take on the Chicago to document the Footwork music documentary form. scene that has become an international phenomenon. Initially starting as a much smaller piece around the Teklife producer DJ Rashad, it was expanded into a full length feature about the scene in general. The film also acts as a testament to Rashad, who sadly passed away the same year as it’s release. As The Palaces Burn (2014) Article by Andy. 23

The US TV series revolves around the Hip Hop music scene through the eyes of a successful record label company. There is plenty of drama to keep you on the edge of your seat, along with characters bursting into spontaneous performances (although a little too crisp and edited for my liking). The basis is of having to work hard and graft in a tough industry. Empire not only involves a talented cast, but also the odd star cameo appearances including: Jennifer Hudson, Estelle, Snoop Dogg and further music greats as well as Naomi Campbell with a recurring role. The music theme was not something to act as a fad, but instead have real depth bringing in championing artists in the current urban industry. The executive producer wanted to appeal to the youth with fresh sounds and, therefore, consulted his children for suggestions. Timbaland, amongst others, are given a plot synopsis with which they create tracks to accompany the themes. The show aims to not only to portray a storyline, but actually present the music industry in a real way, and perhaps make an impact whereby music on screen isn't just shown for entertainment purposes.

Next up is the collab between Saucony and Sneaker Freaker, called the Kushwhacker. The name of this collaboration says it all really. With the colourway taking its name from a highly potent grade of purple haze (cover blown!). Purple upper suede, Wrapped in black with accents and Saucony logo, The Sneaker Freaker branding can be found on the tongue. I think these are the hottest trainers around at the moment, started off as a 600 pair only run, exclusively available from the Sneaker Freaker store. But released worldwide at the finer sneaker stores on 27th June, meaning they could now be sold out! The original first batch release were selling for over £300 on Ebay which may now come down since The worldwide release. Retail price is £109.

Also out now by Saucony are the DXN Trainer Lodge Pack. The lesser known DXN trainer was originally designed by the legendary New zealand runner, Ron Dixon The first runner to clock a sub-zero 3.50 minute mile and winner of the 1983 New York marathon when he was Running as part of the Saucony Racing team. These come in two versions and both inspired by the great outdoors. The first being the Camo (Which I happen to be lucky enough to own) the other being Stone mountain wool. This outdoor ready shoe features a grippy gum rubber sole, water resistant waxed laces, a long john inspired thermal lining. Perfect for those long walks though the woods in the winter, a long distance run, or in my case just down to the supermarket and back ;)

Something for the women up next (although all the trainers above come in men's and women's sizes). The Nike Air Max 90’s Cork Womens. It's the 25th anniversary of the Air Max 90’s, and Nike are going hard on celebrations with some special make ups of the shoe formally known as the Air Max III, As mentioned there are quite a few versions coming out, the most interesting, i think, are the Cork editon, This realeae does exactly what it says on the tin, covering the entire upper in real cork. With a few touches of infa-red for good measure. £110 at selected stores, including Size online.

Next up is a great summer pair of trainers, These Mita x Diadora N9000s pay tribute to Italy’s gift to the world - The glorious notion of getting it on before eating that is “Aperitivo”. Red and goldon/sunburst orange merge over the N9000s playing out like a Malibu Sunset in terms of colourway in layered suede. These will be almost impossible to find, I think, Always check Ebay for all my Sneaker review listings, as more often than not, you might be able to track them down.
Okay signing off, have a great July and check back 1st of August for more amazing summer trainers, accessories and clothing. Rokuro 35

Uncovering The World Of Cover Bands With the beginning of summer upon us, the plenty street festivals are taking over neighborhoods here in Chicago. These blocks long festivals usually take place during a weekend and include many vendors of food, clothing, activities and of course music. I have always wondered what makes a band “street festival worthy.” So, at the most recent fest in my own neighborhood of Andersonville, I started the pay attention. I did not recognize the names on the lineups, but I was excited to see their genres and hear some new music. As I walked through, there were multiple stages so you can hear different bands playing at once. This created a new atmosphere throughout different parts of the fest due to different sounds and rhythms, but definitely added to the fest. As I stood and watched, I noticed a lot of people did as well. Something about the live music drew in people to watch, dance and singalong. Yes, I said sing-along to bands that aren’t easy to find on a streaming device or the radio. Why? Because they are cover bands. Cover bands are perfect for pubs, clubs, events or more intimate atmospheres. They allow the public to sing-along, while also being able to do what they love - perform! I personally believe they are a hit or miss, some can add their own flair to the songs, or perform it just as the original. There were two cover bands that really sparked my attention: Maggie Speaks and The Lucky Dutch.
Internationally, the band has performed in Venice, Monte Carlo, Costa Rica, Barcelona, Istanbul, the Bahamas, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Sydney. I was able to interview David Calzaretta, the lead singer of Maggie Speaks to talk about their reasons to be a cover band, performing and future plans. 1. What made you decide to be a cover band? When I got out of college in 1996, I started working in the corporate world in accounting and finance. I was the guy from Office Space that hated the cubicle. I always sang and played instruments, so I thought it would be fun to start a band just to blow off some steam on the weekends. I found a group of guys to play with and we started booking some shows at local clubs. We had a lot of friends from college and our jobs that would come out to see us. We played music that people could sing and dance to, so they kept coming out. Then we got into the corporate, festival, wedding and private events circuit. That has taken us around the world and allowed us to perform about 170 shows a year for the past 18 years. It has never really been about writing our own stuff. We all scratch that itch from time to time on our own when we feel the need. Maggie Speaks has always been about entertaining people.
2. What is your favorite part of performing? I used to work a 9 - 5 corporate job. When I started Maggie Speaks, I quickly realized that I could make other people that were unhappy at their 9 5 jobs forget about them for a few hours. Watching the smiles on people’s faces in the crowd and knowing that you are bringing joy into someone else's life is what really drives Maggie Speaks is a cover band that has been me and makes me happy to perform. When we do weddings, it makes me feel great that together since 1997, almost 20 years! The a couple would choose our group to perform band has traveled all over the US for corporate events to places like Las Vegas, all at the most important night of their life of the Hawaiian Islands, Scottsdale, AZ, Los together. To talk to them and hear them say it was Angeles, New York, Orlando and more. 37
Then, I was lucky enough to interview all the members of The Lucky Dutch (see what I did there?). Recently signed to Goldship Records, they are distinguished as more than a cover band, but a Chicagobased blues rock band. Already having an album entitled “Bury the Night” out on iTunes, they are starting to make a name for themselves in the music business. Nate = Nathan Graham (Guitar/Vocals) Claire = Claire Corrival (Keyboard/Vocals) important night of their life together. To talk Dave = David Padula (Bass/Producer) to them and hear them say it was everything Ben = Ben Dacoba (Drums) they dreamed of and more is the ultimate TLD = The Lucky Dutch (Band answer) compliment. You can touch people’s lives through music and that is what it is all about 1. What is your favorite part of to me. performing? 4. Biggest accomplishment so far being in Maggie Speaks? I think our story is pretty remarkable in the music industry. We started with a single band in 1998. Our first show we made $100. Then we built the band up to 170 shows a year, playing everything from clubs, fests, weddings and corporate and private events. We get an average of 15-20 inquiries per Saturday throughout the year. Maggie Speaks also has 5 other bands in which they have created. Collectively, they perform over 500 shows a year and keep 25 musicians working and doing what they love. Calzaretta added “We let musicians realize their dreams of performing regularly and earning income doing it. We deliver a top quality product that makes our fans and clients pleased. I can't ask for anything more than that and I feel fortunate that life has lead me down this path.” Check out their website, along with their 5 other bands: maggiespeaks.com | spokenfour.com | finalsay.com | enoughsaidband.com | shoutoutband.com 38
Nate: It’s like a roller coaster or horror film. You have this anxiety and excitement because you really don’t know what will happen next. Claire: Connecting with the audience. Feeling the exchange of energy and knowing that they understand the song, even if they can’t hear the words. Dave: I bring an energy to the stage that I can’t really bring to everyday situations. It’s a side of me that nobody sees on the day to day. I love engaging an audience, making them turn away from whatever they are doing, making them put their phones down and be like, “Damn that band is good!” Ben: I think my favorite part of performing is the interaction with the other members in the band and the freedom I have. In some other bands I’ve played with everything is mapped out and very rigid, but with this band there’s more room to try new things and expand.

3. Biggest accomplishment so far being Night). It’s going to be more in your face, viscerally and lyrically engaging. We’ve really in The Lucky Dutch? come into our own this year and figured our not only our individual sounds but the overall Nate: I would say being signed by Goldship Records. We all believe in this music and this band sound as well. band, but to have someone else believe in you, especially from a business perspective, Ben: I think we are all starting to find our individual sound on our instruments which is is very refreshing and reassuring. leading to the tracks sounding better and as Claire: Longevity. When Nate and I started 5 a whole the band is playing tighter. years ago, we were hauling our gear on the CTA and I carried my keyboard wrapped in a theluckydutch.virb.com moving blanket. We have survived personnel shakeups, money problems, vehicle trouble and every little bump in between. Dave: My biggest accomplishment has been going from not being in a band at all and being basically a recreational bassist to being in a great band, becoming a much better player AND being signed by a record label in roughly two years. Ben: I would say my favorite accomplishment with this band has been our SXSW 2015 tour. It was the first one I went on with this band so I was a little nervous about the dynamics of being with the same three people for a week and playing night after night. In all honesty everything went better than I could’ve imagined. Not only that, we also played some really killer shows all over Texas, and did some really fun things along the way! 4. Can you say anything about your upcoming album (anticipated release in 2016)? Nate: I can say this album will be more confident and visceral than the first one. Claire: It’s a true story about a person I made up. Dave: As the co-producer on all our releases I can tell you this upcoming album is going to be different than the last one (Bury the 39

The video portrays two fun-loving friends enjoying each other's company. The track comes in with it's mysterious feeling. The edgy tone accompanied with the imagery of a strange sense of thrills from pain. A striking contrast between the rough style and subtle sweetness.

10 Years of DirtyBird After an amazing start to the summer with the release of his brand new hit 'Make A Cake', which is currently tearing through sound systems all over, Claude Von Stroke takes a stop in London from his busy touring schedule to bless us with a party to mark the tenth year celebration of his label Dirtybird Records. Over the last 10 years Dirtybird Records has become a one of the most trusted and sonically unique labels in Bass music. They have been responsible for bringing us a number of heavy hitting records that have and continue to stand the test of time in music collections across the world. The label has been responsible for the release of a great number of artists/producers such as Breach (interviewed in issue AM007), Catz n’ Dogz, Julio Bashmore, Cajmere, Riva Starr, Kill Frenzy and the 1st lady of DirtyBird J Phlip (interviewed in issue AM013) just to name a few. Not to mention DirtyBird's in-house artist/producers Justin and Christian Martin, who along with Claude have been able to bring us a distinctive sound which is heavily influenced by both House and Hip-Hop. In the wake of his recent release ‘Barrump’ which features ‘Make a Cake’, a Tech House track has been in heavy rotation this summer. Claude and crew will be stopping by the well-loved and intimate East London venue to bring us a celebration which will no doubt be filled with music lovers bearing smiles whilst enjoying heavy basslines, airy synths and loving vibes. www.dirtybirdrecords.com soundcloud.com/dirtybirdrecords by Malichi. 42

Dutch producer, Sam Hayfield, often produces Progressive & Hard Trance, For this release he branched out searching for new sounds, influenced by the Ibiza Club Lounge style. Stepping into the studio, Sam Hayfield looked into creating that chilled vibe. This proved a challenge for the producer and he did feel lost in the journey, although the upcoming summer season brought back the inspiration. With a little experimentation of guitar loops and a chilled groove bassline, the ingredients of the new track came together. This process is the reason behind the title ‘Lost’, representing the search to the end result, You may also get lost in the music at a sunset beach party, relaxing with a tequila in hand. “After finishing my latest track called Lost, I felt that my musical vibe has returned, and therefore some fresh new ideas came up. I always wanted to produce a Hardstyle sound after many Trance tracks. The melodies and the kick-drum are so beautiful and simple to catch someone’s attention. I found an older vocal sample which fitted perfectly to this track, so all pieces fell together and this stamping track came out. Hope you all will enjoy!” Sam Hayfield

Scientifically Sound Music can tap into your memory, change your mood and lose you in the moment. But let's get down to the details and find out exactly why. The theory of evolution's Darwin, struggled to pinpoint why we respond to music - He likened it to the effects of the bird songs used to attract mates. Just can't stop grooving to the beat? According to science, listening to music taps into the cerebellum in the brain involved with coordination and movement. The majority really do follow the crowd. Studies show participants of group A who listened to songs with no knowledge or order, chose their own tastes. Whereas group B who were given a ranked song selection, swayed towards the higher positioned music.

HOT 6 with Cera Alba
The Yorkshireman who travelled south and made a name for himself has come a long way from being introduced to ‘Kerri Chandler’s - Bar A Thym’, a track which he states was the sound he’d been looking for all them years. Releases on sought after label Hot Creations, Avorte, Viva Music and Matthais Tanvzmann’s Moon Harbour imprint are just a portion as to the reasons why Cera Alba has over 10,000+ organic likes on his Facebook page. Along with a huge discography where each and every track is curated with an attention to detail, Cera Alba has built a reputation of being an intrepid track selector in the DJ booth. With a busy Ibiza season in full swing we decided to catch up with the man himself for his take on the AUDIATION HOT 6.

1st record you ever bought? Well it was a long time ago now! But I think it was 'Hardsoul - Back Together', a classic Deep House Soul record with a Ron Carroll vocal from back in the early 2000's. It’s a great record in my opinion, perhaps a bit too soulful for current trends but give a listen with an open mind. The first ever cassette I purchased was ‘K.W.S - Please Don’t Go’, a lost Pop House record with lashings of Roland 909 drums and 106 chords. Both are fairly Pop driven tracks compared to what I make today but both have had an influence on my sound, I think. Favourite track you have made? It’s a difficult question to answer, I think probably my remix of 'DJ Nibc Ft Andreas Cavaco - Call Me’. I choose this track because it really catches the emotional feeling of the song. I can’t remember writing it too well as I was still working full time so I had to write when I got the time, plus it had a two week deadline. I think that gave me a lot of confidence to produce under pressure. I still listen to it now and think it works so well. Favourite kit for making music? That is another hard question haha, but I like it. Ok so for me the most important tool is probably your own mind, if you can master that then you can create anything. It's all about decision making and being concise with a direction. If we are talking soft synths, I would suggest 'u-he’s Diva’ and NI’s Komplete 10 as they are really great packages. Hardware wise I really like my TR8 and I want to buy Moog 37. Your Dream Line up (self included) Oh this is a good one, I will limit myself to 6 artists... It would be: Moderat (Live), Floating Points, Mountain People, Steve O Sullivan (Live), Point G (Live) & Mr G. If you had to DJ a 3hr set of a different Genre what would it be? Erm thats a tough one, probably Liquid D’n’B, I love 'Machinedrum’s' visions of the 90’s genre. One sentence that defines house and techno music? It's not a description, it's an experience.
