Hi Guys & Dolls... I'm feeling much more of a motivated spirit in the air these days. Yes, there are some troubles in the world, but we will all have faith to stand up for what is right. Valentine's Day i s a l s o a r o u n d t h e c o r n e r , s o y o u s h a l l fi n d a f e w s p o t s o f love in this issue with some lyrics for the occasion. We commence on a poetic notion as David scribes a letter to his l o v e . I a l s o h a v e a p o e t i c fl a i r i n s p i r e d b y s o n g s o f t h e rainfall. The theme of lovers' anguish runs through our stories with an underlying hint of strength. Steve also expresses a feeling of distress, wanting to play an instrument like the master - "explik mwa to trik" explain me your trick he pleads, "Pasians zenn zan" be patient my young friend is the reply. Sarah's Thoughts gives us motivation along with an uplifting playlist for a healthy and happy month ahead. M o v i n g t o t h e s c r e e n , T o y o t a ' s t r e n d y ' R e fl e c t i o n s ' advertisement paired with a matching soundtrack has our attention. Looking into 'Annie Mac - Who Killed The Night? ', we discuss the current British clubbing scene and its downfall. We also update you on news of T2 Trainspotting and The Grammy Awards with the Channel 4 network. We've got your festival guide, radio listings and new music from Sarah Darling, Nell Bryden, Martin Jensen and The Prototypes.

My Love

I can't remember why we're acting so mad Tear soaked pillows and right now we're facing back to back Time is ticking and yet all we're doing is screaming We said we loved each other, then why aren't we listening? Now that we've been battered and bruised Fighting over nothin', can we call a truce? When we mistrust and mistreat We only end up in defeat We said we loved each other, So let's look out for one another Lost in each other, but in time we'll find The meaning between these lines Grey clouds will part, skies will clear Just hold on, don't give in to fear Seasons will change, it won't always be fall 10

"My love, I just want you to know that I ain't ready to let you go. Some days may not seem easy, but I just need you to believe me. Without you I feel incomplete. My love, I know we'll make it through. Hold on to me and I'll hold on to you. Some nights may never seem to end, but I know that we're strong enough to mend. And so I'll fight and defend, my love" Yours, David Inspired by Ne-Yo - Mad

Being from America, it has been very tough taking my mind off the present and trying to focus on topics in music to write about. We have all been wrapped up in social justice, and standing up for what we believe in, we have all lost track of our creativity and have focused on objectivity and advocacy. It is a time that will be remembered, but we have to get through it first. So, trying to think of the right topic for this month’s “Sarah’s Thoughts,” I reflected on things that happened either that have left an impact. The only way I can really say what I am thinking is through music. So, I created a short playlist of songs to uplift spirits, and promote ideas to believe, and stand up for what is right. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you have a healthy and happy month. 1. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert – Same Love 2. The 1975 – Loving Someone 3. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot – Ella Eyre version 4. Aretha Franklin – Respect 5. Grace ft. G-Eazy – You Don’t Own Me (Lesley Gore song) 6. Destiny’s Child ft. Da Brat – Survivor 7. The gentle patter against the window is my lullaby. Trickles dancing down the pane. Falling from the heavens, we wait for the rain to subside. Why do these grey clouds remain so long? The darkness tearing at my heart. I feel so weak. It is hard to go on through this gloom. I want to turn back. I must turn back to what I know. The light is up ahead, he pleads. Go on just a little further. Trickles dancing down my cheeks. I feel the need to stop. 16

The track envokes a cool and self-assured tone to run alongside the idea that this car doesn't need to shout, it knows it's good! Toyota describes the track as having a "laid-back attitude" which pairs with the C-HR's aim to "find your perfect flow on the road." Annie Mac - Who Killed The Night? International DJ Annie Mac has played to thousands of people over the last few decades and is passionate about nightclubs which are facing constant threats of closure. In this one-off documentary, she explains her love of diversity in the clubs where everyone shares "a collective love for music." The show follows through the story of her own memories and clubbers' opinions right through to the builders tearing down venues and people who are determined to save the UK nightlife. Starting with Fabric, which recently has been given a new license under strict terms, it is one of the most iconic venues in music history and really affected people who are a part of music. With all cases, the negatives 20

could be few, but they tarnish brands hugely. Though the majority go clubbing to have fun and enjoy musical expression, the drug abuse and violence are all that the officials will really pay attention to. As shown in the documentary, club closures mean that venues which are open are wary and tend to just play the usual pop music rather than experimenting, thus fewer people go clubbing and DJ's don't get their freedom to play what they want. Also, I must add here, the bad impression is then given to genres such as UK Garage or DnB because of these incidents. Sure, playing cheesy oldies won't cause trouble, but that's because the club will be predominantly have a familyfriendly audience who have no idea about the music scene nor the implications to it. An entirely loselose situation to the British music industry.

www.AudationMagazine.com

So, who does gain from this? As an owner of some of the major UK venues states, it's all about property development. Even shops, pubs and cinemas are fighting a losing battle. He also explains that the councils doesn't ackowledge how much revenue there is in the night time industry. We then see some club footage from various venues, with an aftershot of them now being construction sites for new commercial buildings. Speaking to one of the property developers, he says they want to create spaces to "envigorate the community." When asked about destroying these venues, he describes them by saying that after the license has been revoked following the case with councils, "it's just space."

London has taken it upon his team to protect the night life and create a ripple effect across the country. The appointed individual for this project also owns her own event night in the city and is helping save venues. She says that new flats and builds will be "mindful" to the entertainment industry with sound-proofing and specific layout considerations. Annie Mac ends the show with the statement: "people will always find a way to party." ________________________________

Almost half of the UK’s nightclubs have closed down over the past decade.

In this film, broadcaster and Annie Mac also discusses the international DJ Annie Mac alternatives where the club life investigates who is killing our continues, including illegal raves nightlife. because the mainstream do not offer much anymore. NEW MUSIC

Some of you may recognise the killer house track sample of M. A.N.D.Y. & Booka Shade's 'Body Language'. It's been given a refresh along with headstrong vocals for a fresh 'n' sassy vibe.

Sean Paul ft Dua Lipa: No Lie

Jax Jones ft RAYE: You Don't Know Me

CHARTED

This is a great pairing, the raspy and seductive against lyrical and spicy vocals. All on top of a rhythmic, dancehall style.

Ed Sheeran: Shape Of You Yes, I have been taken in by the pretty melody and catchy vocal flow. This is a fun and colourful piece, visually too with the lyric video. It has also noted by many, the uncanny fit between this song and multiple Sia songs (Cheap Thrills, The Greatest and Rockebye).

The intro brought me back to Gwen Stefani's 'Luxurious' with that sweet vocal on a twinkly melody. Then the beat drops and in comes fresh rap making for a choppy and interesting combo. I love the texture in the track and changes throughout.

Edgy, dark and fast-paced to pump up your night!

The classic has been given a fun and bumpy twist with a lighthearted charm in tribute to this great artist.

JES & Tenishia's 'Here & Now' begins with an energetic intro which leads us to gorgeous voice alongside a lovely piano melody. The main section drops to reveal a vibrant electronic dance style. Starting 2017 off with a bang are JES & Tenishia with their highly anticipated collaboration “Here and Now”. Passionate, intense and daring are all words that could aptly describe this new collaboration which marks the first time these two artists have released an original song together. Leading with a fiery vocal performance from JES which is beautifully paired with Tenishia’s acclaimed melodic piano production style, “Here and Now” successfully fuses elements of both classic and progressive trance. Layering traditional instruments like piano and acoustic guitar with fluttering synths gives JES' passionate vocal delivery the space to shine before an epic synthrich drop takes over filling every space with overwhelming and immersive emotion. In an ever changing world “Here and Now" is the brave new anthem that we need, reminding us that all we really need is to live in the moment. www.blackholerecordings.com 29

Sarah Darling - Dream Country The debut UK album, set to be released 10th February, follows on from success breaking out into the US Country music scene and touring across the UK. The Nashville artist has found a love for the English audience after performing at London's C2C Festival and then returning for her own sold out tour. The album is described as taking "the listener on a journey through aspiration, cinematic songs about stars, romances and dreams in Sarah's escapist style which crosses country, Americana, jazz and contemporary pop." Sarah explains the ideas behind the album. 'Wandering Star' is based on the unknown future, "some of the greatest moments in my life have happened when I least expected them." Whilst 'Halley's Comet' brings us some faith and says that the world is "just like Halley's Comet, she comes back around shining bright even when she goes away for a while. We are all forces to be reckoned with, you just have to believe you will have your time." Off the stage, Sarah enjoys being creative with her own collection of boots together with Durango as well as having a French macaron brand 'Sweet Darling Patisserie'! A soft, velvet smooth feel coats the entire album packaging. The artist and title glisten in gold embossed text just above her demure self. The cream lace dress almost disappearing into the background. From this alone, I get a sense that the music will be just as pretty and delicate. Opening the cover, you shall find more pretty detailing. To the left, stars fall with her words "thank you for being the stars in my sky." To the right, we glimpse at the CD along with another quote. The CD itself has the visuals of constellations in the night's sky. The insert is another delight to the imagination. It unfolds to reveal two sides. The first with each track and a small description matched with a fitting star constellation all against the night sky of Paris. And the other side reveals a huge stargazers scope of the "notable stars" for the album project. The silver details are raised also and give another treat to your senses. The entire physical album is work of art, this can only mean the songs will be equally pleasing with a lot of thought to every element. Easing into 'Wandering Star', you're whisked into a luscious wave of deep, emotive sensations. Sarah's soft voice is ever so pretty and versatile taking you through every story and feeling she has within her. There is wonderful blend with soul derived from a root of the country style that keeps attracting you throughout the album, not staying samey but bringing new attitudes to each song. A few of my favourites include the spunky 'Tell That Devil' and heartfelt 'Halley's Comet'. www.sarahdarling.com 30

Feelgood Vibes! Martin Jensen's 'Solo Dance' will just make you wanna dance, dance, dance. The vocals and sounds are very current with a bubbly nature flowing through. The video is equally on-trend with the crowd throwing down shapes and enjoying the atmosphere. One question you'll be asking is: Is it summer yet? Martin Jensen’s ‘Solo Dance’ is the breakout streaming and global club anthem set to confirm the young Danish DJ/producer as dance music’s newest European star. ‘Solo Dance’ follows four previous singles (since his debut in 2015) that have clocked up more than 100 million streams between them and landed him Platinum and Gold awards. This single is now signed to 3 Beat, label home of Sigma, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, High Contrast, and many more. No longer one of Denmark’s best-kept secrets, 25 year old Martin Jensen has attracted a rapidly increasing fanbase. At 2.2 million plus, he’s got more Facebook followers than fellow Danes MØ, Lukas Graham and Volbeat, and last November he became the first Danish DJ since Trentemøller in 2007 to debut in DJ Mag’s annual publicly voted Top 100 DJs Poll. Martin’s debut single, ‘Sí’, a remix of a Cristiano Ronaldo celebration at the 2014 FIFA Ballon d'Or, went viral and gained him fans in many Latin countries. His breakthrough came with ‘Miracles’ in 2015, featuring Danish singer Bjørnskov. In 2016, he had his biggest hit yet, ‘All I Wanna Do’, with more than 60 million streams on Spotify. Though he harboured ambitions to becoming a lighting engineer (and to create lightshows for other artists), the allure of the DJ booth proved to strong for Jensen, and after cutting his teeth in local clubs he wanted to make music his fulltime career. He’s since played festivals all over Europe and South America, scheduled tours in Asia, and made his first Ibiza appearance at the legendary Amnesia. www.3beat.co.uk

Jump-up, The Prototypes' 'Electric' is in your face maddness! The lively track is given a couple of personas one with a grittier style and another with an influence from UK Garage on the beats. Since launching their own imprint Get Hype Records during the summer of 2016, The Prototypes have been jumping from strength to strength. From DJ shows across the globe and their very own sold out London boat party, to ‘Best Newcomer Label’, ‘Best Video’, ‘Best Track’ and ‘Best Remix’ nominations in the D&B Arena Awards, Chris and Nick have been working as hard as ever. Having already featured new artists Glitch City, Des & Consouls on the label, The Protos now take back control to kick off 2017 with their brand new single, ‘Electric’. Intro intro! A set opening favourite with the likes of Friction, the riff-heavy ‘Electric’ drops hard with all the hallmarks of a certified dance floor banger, a Prototypes tour-de-force. Adding to the package Brighton’s Far Too Loud comes with a massive electro house take whilst the burgeoning Softmore rejigs ‘Electric’ into the perfect bassline 4/4 roller. Setting themselves apart all of the releases on Get Hype will be available for free in MP3 format directly from their website…all you have to do is join the mailing list, just the once and then when new music is released it will be there waiting for you absolutely free. Artra & Holland's 'Freyja' is an awesome progressive trancer with a light feel. The instrumentation is my favourite thing about this release. From xylophone sounds, then a sudden burst of strings followed by a celtic rhythm. Atra and Holland are back in business with their latest offering on In Sessions Recordings. Serving up the truly delightful vibes of ‘Freyja’, the track is a lush fusion of feel good progressive and lush nuances of uplifting trance thrown in there for good measure. The duo sure knows how to craft those unforgettable moments and carefully executed riffs. Essential stuff right here from Artra & Holland - do not miss this! www.infrasonicrecordings.com
