Hi Guys & Dolls... This month we're introducing a new 'Smile' section, we hope to inspire the world in a positive way. Just remember, always believe in yourself and follow your heart no matter what. We thank Purple Agency, Mauritius for putting on a brilliant event in Grand Bay earlier in May with our logo on the photoshoot wall. C'est top! In this issue Sarah's Thoughts gets to speak with Dutch musician VAN ELST who describes his inspiration from natural surroundings and the array of emotions we all experience in life. Do you sing? I thought I heard you last time... Steve shares a touching poem of the singer inside of you which is waiting to be revealed. I cannot explain my attraction to your twisted soul. Feel the afterdark moments with a little poem and a playlist to set the mood. We get chatting with UK Garage trio UK3 about their music and why it's important to just stay true to your passions. On screen we look at Samsung's rebellion as well as a few musical bakes on Channel 4. Steve reviews the new album from Mauritian artists Les Inkonus - ena bon groove ladan! / lotta groove inside! The island also sees a state of Techno equilibrium, we speak with event organiser Pratyush Nobeen about the aims of the event. We've got your festival guide, radio listings and new music from 3LAU, Scott & Nick, Kenny Paget Le Tour, Daniel Wanrooy, Solo Suspex, Major K and Kojo Rigault

Do you sing? I thought I have heard you last time Maybe you mumbled Felt like it was from deep inside Do you sing? Your heart says you do Your eyes say that you would like to Your mind asks for the opportunity But you kept muffled notes in your throat Do you sing? No need to ask Even through silence I can hear you With every beat of your heart The unknown lyrics are voiced out forcefully Do you sing? I know you do While by your side I can feel your body does Every note is perfectly sung Giving the full meaning to your Song Revealing the essence of your life Expel the air out of your lungs Sing at the top of your voice Feel every part of your body vibrate And produce its own sound The sound of love The sound of life

You've got social media to teach you how to market it, so use everything around you. Jay Harvey: To be fair, it's 100% commitment! Be prepared for the highs and lows, knockbacks left, right and centre - it's an absolute rollercoaster. But, if you believe in it and want it enough, you can make a career out of it. Everyone's not going to be as big as Rihanna or Justin Bieber, but there are avenues and ways to make money in a career, and, still enjoy music for a long time.
Oggie: I do a bit of theatre, everything is within the arts. I used to act a little more when I was younger, but mostly, it's all music and if it's not performing as a singer/songwriter then it's theatre work. I was in Thriller for a little bit too.
Oggie: To follow on from that, anyone in this generation is really really lucky. You've got so many more benefits in the sense that you don't have to really on anything - major labels to do things - you can do everything yourself. You can make your own videos and record stuff
Jay Harvey: I have got other stuff I do outside of music... (pause whilst the other two throw banter his way). I've got a gym, a coffee shop, and all this mad stuff. I just try to get some money together, I've got a family so I wanted to build a legacy for my kids.
Ultra: Pretty much the same, it's all music-based. I do a lot of writing for artists and that's it!

So, I stepped outside music for a while and I'm pleased to be back. It was these two guys here who dragged me back - to be fair they didn't drag me, they said "do you wanna do it?" and I said "YESSS!"
Ultra: 90s RnB - that'll be the slowest bench press up! Oggie: Not the slow jams, the big ones. Jay Harvey: I ain't gonna lie, I've trained with Boys 2 Men in my headphones before. Ultra: That's why Jay's massive. Oggie: The up-tempo ones, that's the fun stuff. How important is it that UK3 are involved in charity work? Ultra: Very important. It's always good to help out a cause and people who are less fortunate or need help. I'm always up for charity work.
JAY HARVEY
You all keep yourselves fit (cue giggles from the boys), what tracks get you motivated to workout?
Oggie: It's extremely important, we're involved with a few charitable things at the moment. We're involved with Don't Suffer In Silence and doing a gala on the 2nd of June. Mental health is a really big deal to all of us. We're recording a charity record for another artist that's coming out soon. So, for us, anything we can do to help. There's no point in having a platform if you're not going to use it to actually help people.
Jay Harvey: Any UK Garage can get you hyped to the gym! There's lots of House and stuff as well, sometimes I'll listen to some Trap / Hip Hop / whatever's playing. If it's got energy then it's going to help motivate you. On the way here, a guy ran over to my window in the car and asked me for some spare change, I just pulled everything in my pocket and said take it. I don't know how much, just coins, but little things like that is charity. That's important. I enjoy doing that stuff, it makes me feel nice and good. DNA. You can't shake it. If you're meant to be a musician/artist/singer/ songwriter then it will never leave you. It's a part of you, you're going to be creative. Oggie: It's in the blood, they've said it all. It's in the DNA, it's part of who you are and your being. It's a passion and a blessing. So, at the end of the day, use it and don't waste it.
Songwriting is a big thing for you, how important is it to write your own songs? Ultra: To me, it's a massive part of it, it's a way of expressing myself. I enjoy being in the studio more than anything else, as well as performing. When you're writing something, you just see the whole thing come together. If music be the food of love, play on... This is the year for baking over on Channel 4 with its gutsy acquisition of The Great British Bake Off coming soon, ahead of this we saw a new series titled Extreme Cake Makers hit our screens. So, why exactly are we making your mouths water with cake talk in a music magazine? Well, creativity is not just for arts. In the daytime programme, bakers across the UK showed off their skills in the delicious art form. From a life-size Shetland pony to a Wallace & Gromit working cake factory cake. Two very cool works that caught my attention were also musically inclined. One being a seemingly realistic Victoria sponge guitar cake by Eloise which musician Antonio Lulic was actually able to plug in and play. "My favourite cake commission has to be the working guitar cake I made. Just the fact that it could be played was mind blowing to watch, even when I was the one that made it! I also loved the process of air brushing the paintwork." Eloise, The Gourmet Cupcake Company The second interesting piece was a salted caramel and passion fruit & mango African drum cake made for Blackmale Beats by Nastassja which had the label's fist logo punching through. "Every cake is my favourite cake when I’ve done it – that’s the problem! Each cake is very exciting because it’s something different from the last one. Even though I have an idea of the outcome, I usually surprise myself!" Nastassja, Indulgent Sugar Plum Watch Extreme Cake Makers on All4. www.channel4.com/programmes/extreme-cake-makers

'On My Mind' by 3LAU featuring Yeah Boy is a killer track for the summer with an ultra cool intro then the beat drops to an ultimate floorfiller. The video oozes frivolous fun and the wild dreams of a the average guy. "I wrote this song with Yeah Boy at his parents house, in Adelaide, while I was touring Australia 2 years ago. I'm very excited to release it today, after spending months perfecting every little sound / melody! This song is out on my label BLUME, which means all of the proceeds from streams & sales will go to charity. Last year we raised $200,000 for Pencils of Promise, and 7 new schools will be built in South America from that fundraising by September 2017. Our next goal is to raise $30,000 for the ACLU, and this song will help contribute to that goal :) Once we've raised that, I wanna let you guys decide what charity we give to next! 'Everybody Falls In Love' by Scott & Nick featuring Darren Martyn is a bright and lively UK Garage track. It's a very vibrant take on a classic with high rhythmic synths, a bumpy beat and sweet vocals. Scott Evans and Nick Hounslow, make up the hottest UKG producers on the scene; Scott & Nick. Bringing back Tantro Metro and Devonte’s hit, with a modern twist ‘Everybody Falls In Love’ is definitely one you get up to on the dancefloor. Featuring vocals from Darren Martyn (My Girl ft Tinie Tempah & Never Wanna Say/Soundbwoy), it’s the perfect collaboration. After already releasing remixes ‘Zara Larsson – Lush life’, ‘Years and Years – Desire’ and ‘Calvin Harris & Disciples – How Deep Is Your Love’; ‘Everyone Falls In Love’ is the first official single from the duo taken from their forthcoming EP. The talented duo has already seen support from 'DJ EZ' and 'The Wideboys' on Kiss, Cartier on Rinse and Ts7 on Kiss Fresh. Darren Martyn has penned records such as ‘M.O – Dance On My Own’ and ‘Tom Zanetti – You Want Me’, both supported on all national radio stations. The alliance aligns perfectly for the UKG lovers. Scott & Nick featuring Darren Martyn is not just for this one smash but throughout the whole EP. Things are just warming up for the summer. www.soundcloud.com/scottandnickmusic 34

'Kiss And Tell' by Kenny Paget Le Tour is a wonderfully soulful and colourful track. The funky rhythm gets you moving along with the simply delightful, smooth voice. Kenny was born and raised in South East London, New Cross/Deptford where he learned to play bass guitar and songwrite. For the last few years he's been building up a following as a singer on the live music circuit, then, last year decided to release his debut selfwritten and produced first single 'Dance With Me' which was met with great response! Since then he has gone on to release 2 more singles 'Lose It' and the funky 'If I Ever Feel Better'. 'Kiss And Tell' is his fourth single and goes into more dance the house music roots and will be released on iTunes in June. __________________________________________

'My Way EP' by Bonetti featuring Rescue Poetix has a chilled and vibrant sunshine vibe with beautiful texture in the productions and pretty vocals. For our 40th release we’re stoked to have some funky, soulful and jacked up beats from Mallorca’s, Bonetti. With a steady flow of tracks coming out on a stack of labels, Bonetti is a busy producer but he never fails to deliver a solid groove. We managed to sign 2 great funk laden tracks from the Spaniard, First up is the chord heavy ‘My Way’ featuring some lush vocals from Rescue Poetix. It’s a soulful exploration with lashings of summer and good vibes. The second cut, ‘Tell Me Why’ is a piano driven funky bass affair that should have any summer chasing sun-junkie locked onto the tune with a smile on their dial and a bounce in their step. Finally label boss Husky has stripped back a ‘BHM Deluxe Edit’ of Bonetti’s, ‘My Way’. Husky’s Edit has him dropping in his own drums and holding back on some parts to focus on a solid bass and vocal rhythm, something for the deeper house purveyors. These are some sounds of summer, Crack a cold one and enjoy! www.facebook.com/BobbinHeadMusic 36

'Balance' by The Him featuring Oktavian (Solo Suspex Remix) has an alluring male voice alongside an addictive bumpy track. I love the little textural elements with flutes and high synths. The Him has done it again! Just when you think that the tropical / melodic house sound has finally reached its creative apex, they’re back again pushing boundaries with their new release. I honestly can’t think of a better artist right now who can combine all of the different elements of house music that they do without exhausting their sound. “Balance” features some absolutely stellar piano chords alongside an exciting bass line and what sounds like a xylophone lead – all of which just grab you from the second you press play. That said, newcomer Oktavian absolutely steals the show with some wonderful vocals. I’m honestly not too familiar with most of The Him’s previous vocalists but somehow they just keep pulling stellar singers out of thin air and Oktavian is no different. www.soundcloud.com/wearesolosuspex 40

Commencing with a hard-hitting force, 'Darkness' by TerraNation is a strong trance piece with a climactic middle-section. TerraNation explains his inspiration is fuelled by classic uplifting trance with a powerful bass and melody. "In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." This is a reflection of the darkness which he experienced in the previous month. The need to release that energy evoked the production as "music tells us what we feel." The darkest realms of the psyche and the powerful bass has a resemblance to the cold strength of the mountains. In the natural elements, beams of hope and sunlight start to appear as does the atmospheric melody. www.awjrecordings.com 41
Great uplifting and fun sounds from Major K's 'Magic EP'. El Futuro Recordings presents, Major K, or Kevin Major, a new Belgian artist delivering the single release Magic. Magic is a house and big room dance music oriented track using percussion, raving synths, soft rhodes and adding subtle tropical keys to complete the original track. A special mix of Josh Lasden is added to the release, not reworking the track but adding a wonderful intro, outro and break building a loungy atmosphere with strings, bizarre vocals cuts and sweet pads. 'Love The Future' by Josh Lasden & Synoptic has a beautifully serene state of mind. The Love The Future EP is a first teaser of the album 10 Years El Futuro Recordings. Both tracks, made by Josh Lasden & Synoptic, are chill out, ambient and lounge oriented to guide you to a relaxed mood. '10 Years El Futuro Recordings (mixed album)' by Josh Lasden has a wonderful variety of electronic music with a blend of chilled and melodic styles. El Futuro Recordings started in 2007 and celebrates the 10th anniversary in 2017. This is a special mixed album of our label manager, Josh Lasden, making a selection of popular tracks on the label combined with new tracks. Find music from Hazem Beltagui, Nathan Coles, Nils Hess, Mátyás Blanckaert, Jodie Furtado alongside the new ones being, ‘Angels In Heaven’, ‘Meeting The Mermaids’ and ‘Love The Future’. A mixed adventure capturing 10 years ranging from lounge to deep house and future house. El Futuro Recordings is supported by Laurent Garnier, Armin van Buuren, Laidback Luke, Danny Howells, Roger Sanchez, Matt Darey, DJ Feel, Funk D’Void and many more artists worldwide. A deep, thought-provoking atmosphere ensues in Gai Barone's 'Lost In Music' leading to an exciting electro climax. The Italian progressive master Gai Barone returns to Pure Progressive with another slab of succulent, meaty progressive. Programmed at a sultry 124bpm ‘Lost in Music’ kicks off with one aim; to submerge the listener in it’s auditory waters. The arrangement takes a path through creeping filters, FM tones and (after a tense build) unleashes a beast of an arpeggiated, crushed lead. Sister Sledge would be proud. 'Loved Up' by Kojo Rigault hosts a sweet and passionate voice which across a lively track. The music is a blend of electronic dance, urban pop and caribbean flavours. Kojo himself was not interested in releasing Loved Up or any new music until SynLingerie entrepreneur Tony Ram stumbled upon the song and begged Kojo to release it. Kojo was born in Trinidad and started his singing career as a child in his hometown St. Anns. Together with his friends, they formed a boy band called New Creation and became an overnight sensation. After moving to London, Kojo worked as A&R scout for Craig David’s producer Mark Hill at his Stoosh Records imprint. The remix of the song is a collaboration between Kojo and Dot Inc who are not like their production peers. Their approach is slightly different by bringing different genre’s as Caribbean Dancehall, electronic music and old “skool” Garage together. They already remixed names like Shakira, Sean Paul and David Guetta. Kojo secured a label deal with Spin Up so make sure to follow him on all his social media as the future will be Reggae. www.kojorigault.com www.facebook.com/Kojosound 44

3rd June 2017, The Craft Village Equilibrium events. (Forbach, Mauritius) plays hosts to this fckng serious techno event! How did the idea for Equilibrium originate? This killer night is presented by Secret Models Ltd founder Pratyush Initially we wanted to do Deniz, it was Nobeen as he celebrates his birthday already in the plan that he had to come in style. He is renowned for his this year. We didn't know where to put entrepreneurship in multiple him as we had to wait for other artists creative sectors, taking each project to confirm. The way I work is from above and beyond expectations. bottom to top, so December and then Every one of his events are innovative I work up and see which slot I'm going works of wonder, bringing successful to put him in. I was not sure I could do and hard-working international a solo show on him, I thought 'let me talent to the island. bring another guy.' We started looking for a second act, because usually when I can't honestly say that I know I do shows it has to have two or three Pratyush Nobeen very well. There is DJs minimum. Unless it’s a Ten Walls, no doubt that he is a really good Maceo Plex, Adam Beyer and then I can business & entertainments man with do a solo show. So, when he came into many accomplishments to his name the picture, we didn't know who to and is greatly respected across the bring with him and give the show an island. But, in terms of personality, equilibrium - a balance. Everybody people mainly see his fierce strength. said, 'if you're bringing Deniz, then you This can be perceived as perhaps need to bring a guy from Drumcode.' over-confidence, but when I speak to But I kept thinking it doesn't make him and hear his words on passion and sense to me. They would be the same, magic, I sense there are more layers there'd be no difference and who that people don't see in his character. would come first or second. That's why I understand and constantly I was becoming confused. Then I experience the huge, overwhelming thought and listened to my heart, I mental strength that is needed to be went back again to Teho. I remember successful. It does harden your I made Boris listen to him when he was exterior slightly and makes you put in Mauritius, and I made Deniz also up a certain guard to protect any harm listen to him. They were like, 'yeah this to that stance you've worked hard to guy is really good, you should book build. I'm curious to keep on him.' The biggest problem is that Teho witnessing his journey, and here he plays live and he plays melodic music. speaks with us further about the His music is just 48

like Worakis, he's from the same agency as Worakis and Stephan Bodzin. So, it was really difficult to have a line up where you have his music style and Deniz was completely different on the spectrum. This was the challenge. Equilibrium is not just about the mental state of the whole body, it's also about balancing these two musics in the same genre, but in a different way of showcasing that in one night. They have a few things that are correlated then the melodic part. We thought, maybe it's not going to work but people are really loving it actually. It looks like it's going to be sold out.
It would be easy to book an artist to come do a show, but it's becoming more and more difficult in Mauritius to sell shows. Everyone's doing shows, we need to do things that make people think 'WOW!' The wow-factor like when Boris and Stephan Bodzin came to Mauritius, and when David Guetta or Ten Walls apparently will come. It's becoming more of a challenge for us, we have to make people think. Else they will not come, give them a reason to come. If you don't give people a reason, then what’s the different between you doing a show and any of the others? We are trying to put on a show where I don't want 1 or 2 EQUILIBRIUM : A state of intellectual thousand people, I'm very limited on or emotional balance. A state of this one. This time balance between opposing forces or actions that is either static (as in a I'm trying to keep it to 600 which is body acted on by forces whose very difficult because I've never done resultant is zero) or dynamic (as in a a show under a thousand. This is the reversible chemical reaction when real magic of the show, keep this the rates of reaction in both calibre of maintaining quality. On the directions are equal). This is why for other side, I want people to enjoy, but this party, we have chosen two if it becomes too overcrowded, in this brilliant international acts: Deniz Bul context it's not going to work. The (FCKNG SERIOUS) from Frankfurt & magic of this show is to have the right Teho (LIVE) from France. number of people, not too less or too

much. How do you balance the costs? That's the biggest secret! This is the reason why we have to work on that, do more marketing and make it look like a big show. Basically, certain DJs are ok to jack down their prices, certain DJs are not. I do get some discount because I do great marketing for them and give them a good service etc. But you need to maintain a competitive price. If you're planning to make your price expensive then people will not come. For Bodzin, I had put it just 100 rupees more and people complained. I was like, 'dude this is Stephan Bodzin, you'll never get this guy.' It took us a year, he was not going to come here until he saw that we'd booked Boris. He spoke to Boris and said 'can he pull this off' and Boris said 'yeah, he will do it magically.' And this is it, we did the show. This is how the business works, unfortunately. It's normal, if you jack up the price for sugar or potatoes and tomatoes in a market just one cent, ten cents or one rupee, people will just go bonkers. They would stop shopping and go another to buy the same thing for the same price. I understand that. Even the season, I know in December, they will just buy anything because why? - It's December. It's what happened with Boris, people said 'you're crazy, why are you putting the show before the 13th of the month, the month's salary?' I said that this is where you go wrong, the reason why I put the show before is because they 50
just got the pay from November and they know that in two weeks they will get another and then in December they will get the end of the month's salary. So, people will use the money in November at my party. It worked really well, and this is exactly what I'm going to do again in December, especially with the guy that is coming. The Equilibrium series conveys a contrast of styles commencing with high octane German artist Deniz Bul and melodic French artist Teho. It all kicks off at 9pm until the wee hours of the morning at 6am, and if you're not done partying, the rave continues at Mystik Life Style Hotel (Mont Choisy). What are the aims for the events series? Smash every one and show them that we're the best! A guy that's doing a how just for the sake of money? No. The aim of the show is very different from any commercial show I've done. If you look at Bodzin or Boris, they were marketed in such a commercial way and there was no option. This also answers the question of how do you monetise this, return on investment given that the fees are expensive and tickets are cheap. That's why you need to market it so much to get the maximum people, else you would have to put the tickets at 10,000 rupees for 100 people. But you can't do that. It's simple mathematics. Keep it cheap and have bigger people, keep
www.AudationMagazine.com
it expensive and have smaller people. Easy. But, logically speaking, no one will buy a ticket for 10,000 bucks. You're sure to sell 10 tickets for 1,000 rupees than 1 ticket for 10,000 rupees. So, to get these 10 people, obviously you have to market it. That's more difficult when others here and there are doing shows for 500 bucks. So it becomes the same scenario like in Bollywood/Hollywood. Every Friday there's a major release of a movie, how much is a blockbuster hit 20/200/600 crores... Commercial success is what we all thrive for, but I don't want this to be the major aim of the show. Let's say this is a low budget movie with a high expectation of success. We want to keep it very cosy and familiar. It's one family, kind of party. I'm limiting it to exclusives. I just want to make sure that the people who are coming here, they will stay forever. And they will be the crowd of my society. Here is when I am reminded the Channel 4 'Robin Hood' system in where they have big crowd-pleasing programming to sustain and be able to put more work into their passions of niche projects. Pratyush has his big commercial shows which pull in huge numbers, thus being able to work on his more intimate events and sustain a certain level of respect and identity.
crowd, everybody is not on the same equilibria. If you do a show for 600 people, there will be more energy. I experienced that when I was with Boris on a boat with just 15/20/25 people. The energy was so big that it felt like I just came over with 255 thousand people. You're all passionate, getting closer enjoying it. Exactly. You're together, more passionate about the thing and you're all under one roof. There's no separation, everybody is together and get's access to the VIP lounge. Everything is going to be very cosy and calm. _________________________________ www.facebook.com/secretmodels www.facebook.com/ events/1699416763691737 www.equilibrium.rezobooking.com
One of the major aims of this is also to bring back the energy when we used to do parties in a very small format. There was more vibe. The bigger the show, the less there is a vibe. There's so many people, it's not the same Interview by Ruby
