We feature all styles of music and various languages in the magazine, each piece is an expression of what our writers and featured artists wish to show. We do not have set rules and allow the words to come naturally with few edits. Hi Guys & Dolls... An contemporary black & white guitar is on our cover this month, with the words placed in a way almost like a sticker on the instrument. The pure black back cover offsets this design. We’re excited to be celebrating over 4 million views of our October 2017 issue with Yumpu. Although this is an anomaly, it’s still amazing so, thank you all! Our main statistics for the last annual period have also been calculated and we now have an average of over 7 thousand readers per magazine. In this issue: We shine the spotlight on Craig David’s response to Dua Lipa’s ‘IDGAF’ song as well as Beyonce’s incredible Coachella performance with the return of Destiny’s Child. I need, to be understood. Steve shares emotive lyrics of a yearning for affection. Go behind the scenes of EDM producer Daniel Wanrooy’s video shoot in Corfu, invent your own way to play with Nintendo Labo and Learn To Adult, Slowly with rapper Professor Green. What happens if all your CDs are destroyed and hard drives fail? I look into the intriguing story of The Preserving Machine by Philip K. Dick exploring this idea. For budding musicians, we share the news of how you can win a day at The Recording Studio with the free gig K West Live. We also check out Channel 4’s futuristic thriller being paired with a twisted though beautiful song from Hannah Peel as well as singer Paloma Faith’s work with automobile brand ŠKODA in which they inspire people to pursue their dreams. We've got your events guide, show listings and music from Emili Rackemann, David Hopkins, Mon Frère, Talking Drums and Roger Shah.

AWJ Recordings has been a great supporter of our magazine. The Mauritian-based label aims to showcase rising artists across the world. Having worked with them for a few years, I’ve helped to further develop their brand by giving it a better quality presence and allowing each artist’s production to shine brighter. My work with the label partially helps me to sustain Audiation, and for that I would like to grant AWJ Recordings a partnership status with us! www.awjrecordings.com

Spotlight The Music Marketing Manifesto: Ten Principles For Success “Most people expect unsigned bands to be naff, always challenge the stereotype there is no reason why you can’t look and sound as professional as a signed artist.” Getting people to notice you is difficult, expensive, time-consuming or just down to luck, right? Wrong. Quality and understanding is key, that's why Right Chord Music have put together top ten tips to promote your music effectively.
JJ Riordan ft Beyond The Wash - Cola Sound is truly all around us in every single element of life, be it the general hum of the streets, the whisper of the winds or the ticking clocks. It is a very clever mind to be able to hear those mundane sounds and hear a musical potential. JJ Riordan has taken a literal approach to cover ‘Cola’ by CamelPhat & Elderbrook using Coca Cola containers! Fantastically creative.

Beychella One iconic singer and one iconic festival. Beyoncé proudly became the first black woman to headline Coachella, and she rocked it! She kicked off with a soulful marching band whilst strutting her hot stuff. Fans have have dubbed is as her best performance of her career as she powered through hits including ‘Crazy In Love’, ‘Me, Myself and I’ and ‘Run The World’. But, the goosebumps moment finally came. A commentary for female equally plays out into the crowd. Trumpets flare up. We see 3 silhouettes. The figures are then revealed and screams rush through the air. Destiny’s Child reunite!!
Craig David - IDGAF (Dua Lipa Response cover) I’m quite a fan of response tracks as it shows off how songwriters can creatively work, being inspired from another’s song. It also gives us an alternative perspective of the storyline. Most famously we remember the bitter break up story of ‘F**k It’ by Eamon versus ‘F U Right Back’ by Frankee. This is another break up theme though with a potentially better ending. Duo Lupa stands strong whilst Craig David is asking for forgiveness and another chance. What is surprised is that that we get a really cool twist. He suddenly spins into a medley relating to Eamon’s original song.

Make, Play, Discover Did you ever make instruments when you were little? A guitar with elastic bands over an empty tissue box, maracas with a rice-bottle filled, a microphone hairbrush or drums being any hard surface. I know I did, and it so much fun just to create something and make some noise. I think the art of using your hands and experimenting has somewhat been taken over by technology. It’s becoming more common to see kids these days playing games on digital mediums. Nintendo have switched things up to merge the digital trend with active creativity. Nintendo Labo’s Toy-Con kits pair with their Nintendo Switch devices enabling you to invent new ways to play. The kit itself comes with a variety of cardboard pieces, one of which builds a little piano which you can really play together with the tech. With the software, you can even go back to the elastic band/guitar by putting the elastic bands over your device, configuring settings and strumming away. There is also a hint of being able to have a drum kit soon. So, it’s time to get your band buddies over, build your play and play your builds! https://labo.nintendo.com/invent 15
Learning To Adult, Slowly Stephen Manderson aka UK rapper Professor Green is well known for speaking up and being honest about life. He introduces a new column with The Book Of Man which explores masculinity. He states that he will be painfully honest, but also interesting uses this idea to ask: why does the truth has to hurt? Talking openly about his dark experiences and emotions, the series of articles will follow his journey of how he learnt to be a man. “‘Like a little girl’ is such a gender specific stereotype, isn’t it? Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tell us that ‘Big girls don’t cry’, but what about big boys? What about men?” The Book of Man is a support network for offering advice and inspiration to modern men in a time of great change. www.thebookofman.com/author/stephenmanderson 16

What happens if your hard drive fails, CDs are scratched, tapes askew or vinyls melted? What if the world gets chaotic, fi r e s a b l a z e a n d y o u r p r e c i o u s music collection reduced to scattered embers? What if there was a real way to preserve it? A life form that could endure any disasters. ‘The Preserving Machine’ by Philip K. Dick is an intriguing short story of one idealistic’s attempt to prolong the life of music, giving it life. By turning a sheet of music into a living animal, the theory is that they w o u l d w i t h s t a n d a n y d i ffi c u l t i e s and be able to retain the music inside of them to be converted back when desired. ‘Your Love’ by Erkki. R is a simply a bright and loving track. It consists of upbeat dance beats and modern, playful sounds which are held together by a warm feeling. The equally bright video displays soft colours in kaleidoscopic effects which encompass a girl full of content. Spread the love! That’s exactly what Erkki. R wants you to do! The Estonian born producer is now based in Finland with a young family. He has found recent success on the Swanky Tunes label - ShowLand and has a debut on Somn’thing with his new lush sounds on 'Your Love'. Glowing like the Northern Lights Erkki offers two great mixes on this release: The Original has a more future house flavour. Big builds, a slammin’ bass line and synth parts that peak a drop to epic proportions take you on a melodic ride. Erkki goes ‘Deeper’ on the flip side offering a deep house vibe that keeps the uplifting melody and hooks from the Original Mix but this time complemented by some subtle yet effective added almost tropical melodic nuances that make more than the sum of its parts. Yet another very accessible and playable release from the ever consistent Somn’thing Records stable that's receiving serious club rotation from the world's leading tastemakers. www.soundcloud.com/erkki-r 27

Blending two previously released gems ('What I Want' and 'Why') with three brand-new outings ('After Taste', 'Nothing Without You' and 'Up All Night'), Paige provides to secret formula to a groove-filled night out. Want to dance the night away with rhythms that make you swoon? Paige's 'What I Want EP' is the way to go. www.djpaige.com 28

‘Queen's English’ by Emili Rackemann is an exquisite album. There is stunning beauty in each piano composition. The dramatic and intense sections are gripping whilst you find yourself holding your breath through the solemn, quite moments. The flowing melodies hold such charm and the delicate strands bring you to tears. Dedicated to expanding the the paradigms of how women composers are perceived, Emili Rackemann's dynamic classical crossover compositions serve to reinvent typical genres. Rackemann's wellcrafted original piano scores emerge through raw talent and are decorated by her timeless, fashionable image. She carries the expertise of her musically-endowed family, as a descendant of Frederic Rackemann and brother Ludwig of Germany. www.emilirackemann.com 30

‘Kaio-Ken’ by ShaoDow is tough yet moreish. Oriental strings start the piece off with little synthesiser notes hinting of something darker on horizon. The hard beat drops in and we feel that troublesome nature. The beast of a chorus brings full strength. You don’t wanna mess with me. The video is equally inyour-face with the main vision being a kickass afro and fiery mouth. This is double-ended with a cartoon feud narrative. Mastery should be synonymous with the name ‘ShaoDow’ because that is simply what springs to mind whenever his name is uttered. From years of training in the art of Shaolin Kung Fu, to speaking French and Japanese, he now furthers his pursuit of the music world. Having singlehandedly sold over 25,000 copies of his previous albums and achieved a hit in the Spotify UK Viral Top 50 chart with previous single #DropKickMan, all without a label, he has also toured the UK and Europe and now this manga author and lyrical genius is about to unleash a new single brilliantly titled ‘Kaio-Ken.’ The song is a fresh sounding, reverb-rattling track with lyrical wit, genius and savvy that will certainly blow your mind. Releasing via DiY Gang Entertainment on 06th April, it is produced by Tomek Zyl Music and ShaoDow commands a crisp and determined delivery that stands true to his meticulous and disciplined character. As the winner of AIM’s 2017 ‘Hardest Working Artist’ award, ShaoDow has also been hailed for his unrelenting application to his craft from rap purveyors such as DJ Semtex. His debut Fire in the Booth on Charlie Sloth’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show was billed as ‘incredible’ by GRM Daily who also described ShaoDow’s freestyle as “something different in a congested scene and definitely refreshing”, whilst on stage he has opened for legends like Stormzy, Skepta, Tech N9ne, Wiley and Akala, appeared at Reading and Leeds festivals and performed across Europe, South America and Asia. Recently selected as one of four to perform for House of Van’s ‘Give a Gig’ initiative in March alongside BBK’s Frisco, Nadia Rose and Tiggs Da Author, ShaoDow has also sparked the interest of Dizzee Rascal thanks to his online Nunchuku practise sessions, leading us on to the fact ShaoDow is about to embark on the aptly named ‘Hard Work And Nunchucks’ tour alongside the release of Kaio-Ken. Stopping off in London, Derby and Norwich, the tour is set to be energetic, entertaining and memorable and if you can’t make it to the show, then you can at least witness his physical capabilities on the ultimate stage of ITV’s upcoming Ninja Warrior series, which launches 14th April. www.diygang.co.uk 32

‘Fake News’ by OMAIR commences straight away with a mesmerising, high-energy sound taking over your mind and body. The news bulletin discussing fake news pipes in. We’re transported to another dimension with a beautiful melodic moment. The production is held by a varied structure maintaining our interest. Every once in a while there descends a musical offering that not only encourages the bodies to groove on the dance floor but also inspires a moment of clarity and reflection; an accomplishment in sound that speaks to OMAIR's multidimensional and ever-expanding musical vision. Hitting the airwaves as a follow up to last years stand out track 'The Kingmaker', which shed a figurative light on the concept of a person or group that has great influence on a royal or political succession, without being an ideal or viable candidate (cough, cough), OMAIR continues on his quest of musical freedom interlacing the infectious rhythm with rousing political commentary as a nod to our controversial yet wildly relevant current state of political affairs. As 'Fake News' builds the anticipation activated by a pulsating rhythmic backbone, it is through the divine balance found within a deliciously delicate and ethereal harmony that sets us up for a musical tailspin, seductively destructed into an echo of dystopian distortion. Not for the faint of heart, the wisest of us all will prepare the senses for an auditory overload that will leave the masses begging for more! www.thisisohmmusic.com 35
‘No Escape’ by Claus Backslash has the feel good factor. An intoxicating energy pumps through. The softer, pretty synth melody eases in. The rising energy finds it way through once more revealing a killer dance vibe. Claus Backslash arrives on Interstate with a monstrous debut in the form of 'No Escape'. We instantly fell in love with this little beauty thanks to its killer bass line and groove, packed nicely with that euphoric breakdown and slamming drop. Claus has come up with the goods in a big way here, delivering that exceptional melody and clinical production work, 'No Escape' is a certified biggie. Large! www.clausbackslash.de 36

‘Fire & Ice’ by J&J Project is a love & hate situation. A steady, hypnotic pulse and little tuneful segments are contrasted with gritty, robotic vocal effects and the tough pounding electro. It’s a welcome return to Passion legend JFK, and his new project with progster Jamie Baggotts: J&J Project. ‘Fire & Ice’ bears all the hallmarks of Passion’s famed history – intense and hypnotic trance. Propelled by driving sequencer lines, acidic twittering, lo-fi breakbeat fills, moody vocal samples and pin-sharp production. Mayhem ensues at the break and the pay-off of rising laser effects, vocal pads and the iconic highstring is simply this: pure unadulterated trance. www.facebook.com/puretrance

‘C’est La’ by David Hopkins is ultra cool. The bass and rhythmic beat takes us through with a formal retro sound. The unique French vocals, clash of the low-key piano and smooth strings create a distinctly fascinating tone. The video follows a similarly intriguing style with funky pop-art imagery as well as perplexing cameos of owls and foxes. David Hopkins was born in Dublin, Ireland. After cutting his teeth with the heavyweight Dublin band LiR, he decided it was time to take a break from music and make a change by moving to New York. After his arrival, reality set in and Hopkins soon realized that he would have to get a "real job”. His first foray into work at a famous New York Restaurant ended with him being fired within three days due to throwing cutlery at the head chef. Once again, rock and roll beckoned. ‘C’est La’ is taken from the forthcoming album ‘Overlook’. Overlook emanates Hopkins intrigue for creating psychedelic soundscapes and boasts a vocal performance reminiscent of Nick Drake. The songs are true to his early day inspirations, derived from the 60s and 70s rock of the British Isles including Led Zeppelin and Syd Barrett. But Overlook is truly an original compilation that could only be the brainchild of David Hopkins. Robert Root, engineer for The Killers, Stoermer and Hopkins describe the sound as “Psychedelic Chamber Rock”. Hopkins also describes it as “equal parts Led Zeppelin, Bagpuss, 1980’s BBC public announcement warning Ads, Bob Marley and Beethoven”. “Overlook is the most honest record I have made to date I had always worked on albums where I had to compromise. I did whatever I wanted to do with this album” www.facebook.com/DavidHopkinsOfficial 39

‘Take Me Home EP’ by Talking Drums ft Cassandra Sarkady is enthralling. The dark and dirty bass paves the way for alluring yet purposeful vocals. The heavy drums drop in, heating up the energy and mood. Talking Drums, also known as a.k.a. MC SAS (former Viper Recordings) and head- honcho of Sleep Less Records, comes correct with his debut production release called ‘Take Me Home’. Together with the Viennabased vocalist Cassadra Sarkady a.k.a. MC Delight, they take you through their intriguing realm of raw and uncut sound of Drum & Bass. With spellbinding melodies incorporated by the producer, this cut speaks openly; allowing listeners to shift to second gear thanks to throbbing basslines, rough percussion and mesmerising vocals that make their solid appearance. This fusion of sounds, together with the growling bass weight, induce the feeling of desolation as well as the purpose of finding your final ‘destination’. Talking Drums places hi-hats and vocal samples intelligently before the aftermath of a drop hits accordingly, choosing for that correct rhythm and style. A blessing production for the lovers of 100% Drum & Bass music from the Sleep Less Records flagship, hailing from the depths of the United Kingdom – and features remixes by the gifted producers Kumarachi & Dan Danko.” “The brainchild of former Viper Recordings artist MC SAS, Sleep Less Records has emerged from its beginnings in 2012 as an independent Drum & Bass and Dubstep record label to produce a plethora of exciting, homegrown talent. Following years of working their A&R skillset over the two electronic genres, they’ve pulled out talented newcomers and have allowed them to shine through with their music.” www.facebook.com/talkingdrumsimba 42

‘Star-crossed by Roger Shah & JES is beautiful. I wanna build my world around you. The emotive lyrics pull at your heart strings. But the waves keep crashing down. Her passionate voice flows together with the rhythmic though subtle production. The remixes comprise of a high energy club mix as well as a sleek, pool party style from Coconuts & Pineapples. Beating the drum for the advance his new artist album, today Roger Shah gives audiences a singles-taste of what's albumin-store come May. 'Star-crossed' reteams him with the expressive voice and every bit as illustrative songwriting of JES. Already a collaborative force to be reckoned with, the single picks up the partnership where 'Higher Than The Sun' and 'Glitter & Gold' left off. Optimistic lift cautioned by emotional lament, 'Star-crossed' sees the awarding winning JES portray a love confronting some real-world realities. Lyrical poignancies and vocal nuance cross on a tale as lyrically affecting as it is vocally touching. Ranged across a rich span of mixes, each of Roger's five versions has a different time if day or night play in mind. Through its Original, Extended and Coconuts & Pineapples interpretations, Roger's music sets its story to everincreasing degrees of shift and samba-ish sway. Adding to its strikingly bittersweet nature, beach-oriented tempos and tropical house styles/rhythms are spun elegantly into its production. Passaging the track to the dancefloor, Roger skilfully translates these sonic ethics into its purpose-filled Club Mix. The package's arc reaches its natural conclusion with 'Starcrossed's Extended Uplifting Mix, which delivers an irresistibly aerodynamic peak-of-the-night option. www.rogershah.net 44

‘I Need Out’ by Bobby Shoebotham is exuberant even through the dark moods. A refreshingly raw folk voice. The full band provides a great bit burst of fun and gusto. The upbeat tempo and fluid brass bring it all together with a light-hearted nature. Though he would loathe to be described as one, Bobby Shoebotham is the next in a long line of classic punk rock singer songwriters, following hot on the footsteps of his recent contemporaries such as Ben Nicholls, Alison Weiss and Brian Fallon. While not always at the forefront of the scene, Picking up press in the Hackney Gazette, Never Enough Notes, Wordkrapht, Repeat fanzine, This is Lucy Loud, RARAs Farm's Music Blog, Pure Grain Audio, Tasty Fanzine and Skope Mag he’s creating quite the storm from tracks such as ‘I’m On Your Side’. With the hotly anticipated ‘I Need Out’ EP out now covering a wide range of musical styles, from bluegrass to swing, whilst always transmitting the punk rock ethos over to the listener. Bobby Shoebotham - a name that we’re going to hear mentioned alongside his heroes before too long with songs as powerful and catchy and just as downright good as these. www.twitter.com/King_Shoey 46
