Welcome to Measure for Measure and the much-anticipated return of the Bingham Signature Shakespeare Series! This series is the result of a gift from the Bingham family and supports bringing the work of William Shakespeare to our stages. I look forward to experiencing the Bard’s classics with you. I’m especially pleased that we’re bringing Fiasco Theater’s acclaimed production of Measure for Measure to Louisville. With gorgeous music, brilliant comic storytelling and their passion for language, Fiasco immerses us in the city of Vienna, where people from many walks of life struggle with the clash of vice and virtue. At the heart of the play is one young woman’s courageous attempt to save her brother from the harsh repercussions of the law. Witnessing her pursuit of mercy, we may each begin to question the efficacy of justice that seeks punishment over healing. This classic story challenges our society’s assumptions that complex ideas such as sin and morality can be reduced to strict binaries that dictate who’s good and who’s bad. Theatre provides a brave space for us to share stories and experiences. This time we have with each other is valuable. I invite you to look around. Maybe you’d like to greet the person on your right and on your left. Consider that we all have more in common than not. Let’s meditate and reflect on this experience together to investigate that idea. Looking ahead, we’ll soon be celebrating the magic of the holidays! Create a tradition for the whole family with the visual splendor and joyous music of Fifth Third Bank’s A Christmas Carol. Or, if you’d prefer a show that doesn’t belong on the “nice list,” The Santaland Diaries provides an irreverent peek into life as a Christmas elf at Macy’s Santaland. We look forward to sharing this special time of year with you and yours. Thank you again for joining us. I invite you to share your thoughts with us directly at Leadership@ActorsTheatre.org. Enjoy the show!

MEASURE FOR MEASURE is a play about city life. Shakespeare seems to use Vienna as a way to explore the complexities of his London—complexities that resonate in our cities today. In Measure, the Viennese inhabit spaces divided by physical, social and psychological barriers, and Shakespeare examines those spaces where the barriers are removed and people are forced into contact and conflict with each other: places like the courtroom, the church and the brothel. For us, these locations of the body politic also connect to locations in the human body: specifically the head (intellectual), the heart (spiritual) and the groin (primal). And so we meet characters whose worldviews are based in different physical centers and who struggle to 8

find balance within themselves and their culture. When should we temper justice with mercy? Why do some people live for the sacred and some for the profane? How can we live as both the individual animals we are and the civilized society we need to be? What should be done when a leader entrusted with power over people’s lives proves unfit for the office he holds? It has been a great gift to engage with these questions, and we hope you enjoy the process as much as we have. Thank you for coming. — Ben Steinfeld, Noah Brody and Jessie Austrian, Co-Artistic Directors, Fiasco Theater

ABOUT THE MUSIC IN MEASURE FOR MEASURE

From William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, written ca. 1592-3.

THE VOCAL MUSIC in this production of Measure for Measure was written by William Byrd, one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries. Born in London circa 1540, Byrd is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of the English Renaissance. Over the course of a decades-long career, Byrd crafted more than 450 pieces, among which are formally innovative compositions for the keyboard and for instrumental ensembles, as well as choral works in English and Latin. He wrote both secular and sacred music that is still performed today. For the members of Fiasco Theater, Byrd is a natural companion to Shakespeare and Measure for Measure. Byrd’s sacred pieces resonate with the play’s faith-driven elements, and his frequent use of counterpoint embodies the tensions and multiple perspectives that propel the plot. In counterpoint compositions, two or more independent melodies are in conversation with each

“Including vocal music by a contemporary of Shakespeare brings all of our ears and sensibilities into a Renaissance mode of thinking and feeling.” other as they unfold at the same time, and it’s out of their difference or even conflict that something beautiful and unexpected emerges. As sung a cappella by the cast, Byrd’s intricate harmonies highlight both the strength of the ensemble and the artistry of the individual voices within it. Ben Steinfeld, Measure for Measure’s co-director and music director, also imagines Byrd’s work as an additional entry point into the world of the play. “Including vocal music by a contemporary of Shakespeare brings all of our ears and sensibilities into a Renaissance mode of thinking and feeling. It wakes us up to language and sound in a different way,” he reflects. “I chose these particular Byrd songs because their lyrical content reflects the themes, experiences and questions of this play so wonderfully.” —Jessica Reese

PLAYWRIGHT William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, the third

of eight children (five of whom survived to adulthood). He married in 1582, and after the birth of his three children, Shakespeare moved to London in the late 1580s to establish himself as an actor and playwright. By 1594, he was performing and writing for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men and soon became a managing partner in the company. When Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603 and James I succeeded her to the throne of England, the troupe was renamed the King’s Men. Before Shakespeare’s death in 1616, he wrote 38 plays as well as poetry, including 154 sonnets. In 1623, two colleagues from his theatre company printed the First Folio edition of his collected plays, of which about half were previously unpublished.

ARTISTS UNDER COMMISSION

Aesthetics in Jewelry

In addition to reading script submissions from around the country, Actors Theatre of Louisville builds relationships with playwrights and encourages the creation of new work by commissioning plays from artists whom we admire. A new play commission engages a writer to pen a piece specifically for Actors Theatre of Louisville and allows us to support the work’s development from the earliest stages of inspiration onward. Some notable past full-length plays commissioned by Actors Theatre and produced in the Humana Festival of New American Plays include The Christians and The Thin Place by Lucas Hnath, Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler, For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday by Sarah Ruhl, Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Maple and Vine by Jordan Harrison (co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre), Big Love and The Glory of the World by Charles Mee, and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama).

Creating beautiful jewelry since 1976
