We won’t deny that being one of the most requested wines feels pretty good. But the truth is, for us, crafting consistently delicious wines is a reward in and of itself. In other words, thanks for enjoying our wines as much as we enjoy making them.

F R O M T H E T H E AT R E Happy New Year and welcome to Actors Theatre of Louisville! We are delighted to welcome back Dominique Morisseau with this production of her compelling play, Pipeline. You may remember last season’s production of Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew (also directed by the brilliant Steve H Broadnax III), or you may even remember seeing her onstage in our 2013 production of The Mountaintop. Since we last presented Morisseau’s work, she has been named a 2018 MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” recipient, one of 25 Fellows anonymously nominated for their groundbreaking work and awarded “no strings attached fellowships” from the John T. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The Foundation recognized Morisseau’s resonant examination of “the intersection of choice and circumstance in works that portray individuals and communities grappling with economic and social changes”— an apt description of Pipeline. A lyrical, timely drama about the legacy of violence confronting black youth in America, Pipeline introduces us to Nya, a single mother teaching at an inner-city school. Nya tries to do what’s best for her teenage son, even as the limitations the world has placed on him grow more and more clear. We hope you’ll join us later in January as we extend this important conversation beyond the stage with the Pipeline: Community Conversation on January 11. Actors Theatre artists will join local panelists to discuss the impact of race and class on Louisville’s youth. The Community Conversation events are always among our most popular, as they offer audiences and artists a chance to respond to the subject matter on our stages. We hope to see you there! Looking ahead, virtuosic performer Hershey Felder joins us for a music-filled journey through the legendary career of Irving Berlin. Beginning January 29, Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin melds story and song in a love letter to a man whose work helped define the American songbook. In late February, we move into the 43rd Humana Festival of New American Plays, which will showcase the very best of contemporary playwriting through five world-premiere productions. For more information on this fantastic lineup of shows, upcoming events, and how you can become a Season Ticket Holder, please visit ActorsTheatre.org or call 502.584.1205 for details. Thank you again for joining us and for supporting the arts in Louisville!

In the Words of the Playwright Below, Dominique Morisseau reflects on what drew her to writing about the school-toprison pipeline—a troubling phenomenon in which young men of color are disproportionately funneled straight from schools into incarceration, often due to minor infractions that could have been resolved outside the criminal justice system. “I knew I wanted to write about the school-to-prison pipeline…because there is so much segregation in education, and there’s an excessive system of haves and havenots. So I was first and foremost interested in exploring the school-to-prison pipeline because of how personally it affected some people in my life. … One surrogate-nephew of mine had a bad incident at school and was quickly being criminalized online and in the press around the city where his incident happened. It shocked me and concerned me how quickly we criminalize and don’t give second chances to young men of color, and particularly young African-American men. The other thing that was an inciting moment for me was when I started writing this play…Ferguson happened. I got really struck by Michael Brown and how it felt like he was a controversial figure…because he posed with a face of defiance in his pictures, somehow that meant that he deserved the murder that happened to him. That he had somehow been complicit in his own murder, and that he was not worthy of soliciting so much public empathy. I was concerned about that deeply, and so the character of Omari became greatly inspired by the young man in my life, and by Michael Brown. I was an educator in New York City for about 15 years, and I’ve been an educator in my life for over 20. For me, going into this world of the school system was collecting my own memories and my own conversations. In New York City, I’ve taught in all five boroughs… Through that experience, I’ve seen a lot. … I’m not so arrogant to think I have all the answers… In Pipeline, I do know that there are structural and cultural failures in both the private and public schools… I do know that it’s going to take some work and some recalibrating how we look at education and who we’re listening to when we talk about education… What I don’t know is how we do all that. I feel like if I ask the important questions that I have around it, maybe, collectively, as a society, we will start to have the kind of conversation that can find a solution.” ~ excerpted from “An Interview with Dominique Morisseau,” The Interval, July 25, 2017

A Voice and a Place To Be Before rehearsals for Pipeline began, director Steve H. Broadnax III shared what he loves about Dominique Morisseau’s writing, and why he’s excited to return to Actors Theatre and bring this play to life for Louisville audiences. “I am one of the primary directors of Dominique Morisseau’s work, and she’s also a friend of mine. I just love her voice. It’s a voice of activism, one that gives a platform to communities who aren’t often heard—especially African-American communities and the working class. Every time I see or work on one of her plays, I’m very moved. She’s amazing! Coming back to Actors Theatre is also always a pleasure. I was thrilled when I was selected to direct Pipeline; I loved working on Skeleton Crew at Actors last season. In fact, we had such great success with that show that we’ve brought back most of the same design team to create the world of Pipeline. One of the actors from Skeleton Crew is also back: Patrese D. McClain, who played Shanita, is portraying Nya in this production. From Arkansas originally, I’m a Southern boy who often visited Actors Theatre growing up, so having the opportunity to work here is a dream. I think Pipeline is an exploration of what it means to raise black youth, especially a black male. It asks us to consider how we can nurture young black men. How can we cater to their needs? I’m hoping that audiences will leave thinking more deeply and empathetically, beyond the rage-filled stereotypes presented to us in the media. This play reminds us that they need a voice, and a place to be, in order to prosper and reach their full potential.” ~ compiled by Hannah Rae Montgomery
Playwright’s Rules of Engagement You are allowed to laugh audibly. You are allowed to have audible moments of reaction and response. My work requires a few “um hmms” and “uhn uhnns” should you need to use them. Just maybe in moderation. Only when you really need to vocalize. This can be church for some of us, and testifying is allowed. This is also live theatre and the actors need you to engage with them, not distract them or thwart their performance. Please be an audience member that joins with others and allows a bit of breathing room. Exhale together. Laugh together. Say “amen” should you need to. This is community. Let’s go. ~ Dominique Morisseau A U D I E N C E

Members of the Professional Training Company receive additional training at the Louisville Ballet School.
Actors Theatre of Louisville was founded in 1964 by Richard Block in association with Ewel Cornett. Jon Jory was Producing Director from 1969 to 2000. Alexander Speer was Executive Director from 1965 to 2006.
Artists under Commission In addition to reading script submissions from around the country, Actors Theatre of Louisville builds relationships with playwrights and encourages the creation of new work by commissioning plays from artists whom we admire. A new play commission engages a writer to pen a piece specifically for Actors Theatre of Louisville and allows us to support the work’s development from the earliest stages of inspiration onward. Some notable past full-length plays commissioned by Actors Theatre and produced in the Humana Festival of New American Plays include The Christians by Lucas Hnath, Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler, For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday by Sarah Ruhl, Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Maple and Vine by Jordan Harrison (co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre), Big Love and The Glory of the World by Charles Mee, and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama).
Commissioned writers currently include: Jeff Augustin Kara Lee Corthron Jackie Sibblies Drury Emily Feldman Tasha Gordon-Solmon 28
