STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN FOR BİRGİ Type Location Year About Collaboration
Strategies, Urban Design Birgi, İzmir - Turkey 2017 Revitalization of a preserved Aegean town Urban Studies Lab Team - ÇEKÜL Foundation
CULTURAL PLAN FOR A SUSTAINED AND ACTIVE BİRGİ The strategic action plan for the protection of Birgi’s cultural heritage aimed to preserve the identity of Birgi by revitalizing the center. For that, urban strategies and intervention models were proposed in order to save Birgi’s traditional architecture and propose a sustainable development of the city. Interdisciplinarity, partnerships, management process and cultural infrastructure were the keywords in order to create “an active Birgi”. A year-long cultural plan was proposed, to make sure the conservation works continuously in Birgi, and be a solution to actual urban problems and economic revival. In this regard, the guide’s main framework was set up to create an “Active Culture Hub” for the region.

STRATEGIC MASTERPLAN FOR ELBİSTAN Type Location Year About Collaboration
Development, Urban Design Elbistan, Kahramanmaraş - Turkey 2016 Development of the vacant historical center of the city Urban Studies Lab Team - ÇEKÜL Foundation
CULTURAL REVITALIZATION OF THE HISTORICAL CENTER The aim of the guide for Elbistan was to create a development strategy that will affect the whole city scale by establishing links between different development areas around the city center while preserving the historical and cultural urban fabric, especially by revitalizing the ruined old city center. With minimum intervention how to maximize the impact through the identified strategies and recommendations? In Elbistan’s context, first the strategies were determined, second, the intervention areas were chosen within the framework of these strategies and some specific project areas were selected. In order to protect/reconstruct the urban fabric surrounding the city center, some rules and strategic principles were generated. The loss of historical architecture cannot be brought back, but it is foreseen that city vacancies can be transformed into re-usable, active public spaces for the citizens.

WHAT IS AN URBAN DESIGN GUIDE? FLYERS FOR MUNICIPALITIES Type Location Year About
Design Codes, Urban Design TKB Conferences, Turkey 2018 Informative flyers about Urban Design Guides in Turkey, case studies Collaboration Urban Studies Lab Team - ÇEKÜL Foundation
FLYERS DISTRIBUTED DURING TKB CONFERENCES The aim of this flyer is to inform municipalities about local identity preservation in emerging cities and how to manage it. This document helps to define urban planning step by step associating it with different scale plans and stakeholders. The idea is to introduce urban design guides as a manual or “prescription” for cities, neighborhoods, public spaces or streets. With this flyer the municipalities are invited to learn about design guides and search about executed cases in local and international scale. The informative flyer contains topics like: - Definition of an Urban Design Guide - Why do we need an Urban Design Guide? - What does the Turkish Legislation say about the Urban Design Guide? - Types of Urban Design Guides - The Urban Design Guide’s process - Who are the stakeholders of an Urban Design Guide? - Case studies in Turkey - Resources and Links

KALAMIŞ MARINE HOTEL: LOCATED IN THE ENTRANCE OF A MARINA A boutique hotel project with 39 rooms located on Kalamış coastal road in Istanbul’s Anatolian side. Positioned at the entrance of an international marina, the proximity to the historical peninsula with a boat, and opened to all kind of client were important design decisions affecting the concept process of the project. A five-floor hotel with 33 standard rooms, 6 attic rooms, a restaurant, reunion rooms, a spa and lobby areas were designed. For material mockups and furniture, it was important to use details that reminded boats and sails. Metal contours for the armatures, wooden floors, light and shadow interaction, comfortable and stylish spaces were the priority design principles. Lucid’s interior concept process was the product of a 4 months collaboration between architects and interior architects. The site construction process is still continuing.

Offices, Architecture İstanbul - Turkey 2014 - 2015 Strengthening-peeling-rebuilding an office building Mert Eyiler, Hüsna Özkaya MEMA/ve/Mert Eyiler Architect Studio
RENOVATION OF A BUILDING IN THE GOLDEN HORN CONTEXT Re-functioning an old building from the 80’s on the eastern side of the Golden Horn, a magnificent sea view hiding behind a gas station was the context of the project “ Offices in Hasköy”. The building then became a working space for employees of a business company. Strengthening-peeling-rebuilding processes have been realized in a small fourfloors building structure in total 200m2: “How can we peel a building in the center of the Golden Horn without changing the skyline?” “Since 2000, big projects for the Golden Horn area have been mentioned, what kind of intervention is possible for the changing industrial architecture?” “Can we create a new image in an underprotection site and under what circumstances?” these were important questions that we tried to answer.

THE GRAND PARC ENTERTAINMENT HALL Type Location Year About
Multifonctional Hall, Architecture Bordeaux - France 2013 Competition 1st prize Renovation of a 22 years closed concert hall (Designed by C. Ferret in 1962) Collaboration Christophe Hutin Architecture Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal and Frédéric Druot
RESTORATION OF MODERN ERA BUILDING The Grand Parc Entertainment Hall Restoration Competition was organized in 2013 by the Municipality of Bordeaux with a price of 4 million €. Until 90s the entertainment hall was the indispensable address for rock and punk concerts. However, the last concert was held in 1991, the place was closed due to the fact that it was very noisy after shows. 22 years later the municipality decided to re-open this modern building after many claims from the local associations. The main intention of the project was, for the hall to be a new activity center in use by the neighborhood. To stick to the original design of Ferret and renovate as a place capable to host multiple tasks was very important. For that reason; a gate has been opened for both night and day use on the rear facade, this intervention was the only and main focus of the project. It must have been this tiny touch which satisfied the expectations of the municipality, the project was awarded the first prize.

PAVILION FOR THE ABBADIA CASTLE Type Location Year About Collaboration
Pavilion, Architecture Hendaye (Basque Country) - France 2012 Competition, finalist (Castle designed by Violet-Le-Duc) Christophe Hutin, Maindi Murua Berra Christophe Hutin Architecture
INFORMATION PAVILION BEFORE VISITING THE CASTLE The Abbadia Castle, designed by Viollet Le Duc in the 18th century, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean along Hendaye’s coast. The castle, which has a spectacular view towards the Spanish border, was built according to certain coordinates as requested by a professor; Antoine d’Abbadie. He was an avid astronomer and map-drawing enthusiast has spent years researching the world’s axis and curvature. From his observatory, he defined some important axes, leading to precise points such as the hill of Rhune Mountain. For that, he demanded to Viollet Le Duc to add some cylindrical hollows which pierced all the walls of the castle to not block the axes. Every year 40 thousand tourists visit the Abbadia Castle, an additional space was in need to receive the visitors. The aim of an architectural competition held by the Municipality was to provide a small pavilion of 200 m2 where visitors could have information before the visits, a waiting lounge, a souvenir shop, toilets and snack areas. A risky decision was made during the design process. A different place was chosen for the project and meanwhile, the technical jury’s decision was totally reconsidered. Instead of the competition’s chosen area, a ruined area which was situated under the castle’s topography line was more accurate to us. It was a worthed decision; giving priority to the sensitivities of Antoine d’Abbadia to not interrupt the observation axes set by him, to preserve the silhouette of the shoreline, and to capture the spectacular view to the ocean. The project was very debated, but not enough to win, second prize was our merit dough.

Studio, Academic, Architecture İstanbul - Turkey 2014 Assistant for Architecture Faculty of Bilgi University 3rd year Studio: Housing Collaboration Mert Eyiler, Murat Şanal, Emrah Altınok
3RD YEAR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO IN ISTANBUL BİLGİ UNIVERSITY In spring 2014, Istanbul Bilgi University 3rd grade students were lead during one semester by Mert Eyiler, architect who was invited to give a lecture for the second term project studio. My part was to be a studio assistant by Mert’s side, organized and planned the semester program with him, guided and motivated students in their work. The theme of the semester was “Housing in a changing city”. Two project sites were chosen in Istanbul Zeytinburnu neighborhood. The students were initiated to pass time on the sites, to understand and to figure out the livings. The energy of the studio needed to be a form of work that required to produce, to inquire, to find keywords, and bring the students around to work as a team rather than in individuals. The film, which covers the first half of the semester, reveals the working process of the studio.

HABITANTS OF MANİSA AKHİSAR HOTEL IN KEMERALTI The life and the culture established around a courtyard is the architectural heritage of Jewish immigrants in Izmir. The word “kortejo” in Jewish means courtyard and is translated to “family houses” in Turkish. The master project consists to renovate the Manisa Akhisar Hotel located in the center of İzmir next to Kemeraltı Bazaar and the historical Agora of the city. This hotel is an old family house with 42 rooms. Each of the 8 m2 room opens onto a courtyard full of trees and cats. The hotel accepts only men; seasonal workers, abandoned people, old people, young alone people, love afflicted people and promise to take them under its wings for only 7.5 Liras per night. The goal of this project is to measure the hotel’s capacity. “Can we save both the building and its residents with minimal intervention, without resorting to destruction?” “A social architecture is it possible?” “At what cost the kortejos will be lost for the sake of urban transformation?” “What kind of future is planned for these people?”
