P&C’s “Dark & Stormy” DANCE – adults only

Many thanks to all who contributed to the success of the Book Fair & Book Character Parade last week. I have passed on the thanks of parents to the staff who ensured that children were kept safe and sound amidst the chaos of last Friday’s closure of the highway. The tragic motor vehicle accident is a timely reminder to all of us around road safety! Please take care in school zones, especially when dropping off and picking up children. Earlier in the year I published an unofficial guide to the “real costs” of sending a child to this school. It was in response to reports in the media of school costs escalating. We are always sensitive to the costs that you incur around sending your child(ren) to school. However, the majority of our parents want us to deliver a rich curriculum and many parents tell me that they appreciate the extras that we provide including sport, excursions, Healthy Harold and visiting performances - even if that means paying for the privilege. Handily, the Federal Government’s “School Kids” grant to families on Family Benefit Part A should arrive real soon so that should be a much needed help in paying for all of the extra costs in sending your child(ren) to school. We always try to offer at least two visiting performances per year around music. Last year we offered three: “The Hummingbirds”, the “Chris James’ Vocal journey”, and “Terrango”, an African music ensemble. We do this to expose students to high quality music and musicians that they wouldn’t normally get to see live. We only charged entry to “Hummingbirds and Terrango”.

Next week we offer something really special! The Kalamunda Youth Swing Band from Western Australia will be in Coffs Harbour for the Wintersun Festival and we have them coming to our school! This show is highly recommended. There will be two performances: K-2 at 10.30am and Years 3-6 at 11.45am. The performances cost $5 per child. We think this is a bargain for such a high quality, interactive musical experience. Parents, grandparents and friends of the school are invited too and entry for them will be by gold coin donation. If you can’t make it, make sure that your son or daughter doesn’t miss out! Finally, well done to our Cross Country runners! Three students selected for regional representation: Ashley Brown, Sasha McNab and Jana Rothacker,. Cheers! Nice work to Soccer team yesterday and Rugby League team today – always great sports at Sandy Beach Public School! Regards, Ray Rincheval, proud principal

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

For those who have been waiting on School Shirts, you will be glad to know they will be here on Thursday. Please if you cannot make it to the canteen between 10am and 2pm place your request and payment into an envelope and send it to school with your child. We will sort it out and send home or call if there is a problem.

Unfortunately as you know there was a tragic accident on the highway on Friday. We had lots of anxious kids on buses and equally anxious parents waiting for them. I have spoken to Ryans Bus Service and they tell me the best way to keep abreast with highway matters is to follow them on Twitter - @RyansBusService it is updated regularly to let parents/carers know what is happening and some idea of delays expected.

There are some great articles in this term P&C Journal. This can be found in the office, so pop in have a read or grab a copy well worth a look.

Congratulations to the following students for receiving their special awards:

Worried about your child’s Hearing? Have they had lots of colds and ear infections? Do they seem like they are ignoring you? Then come along to Otitis Media Awareness Day Thursday 31st May Park Beach Plaza, 10am-4pm Ear Health Checks for children from birth to 18 years. FREE! No appointments necessary. Each ear check will only take approximately 5 mins. _____________________________________ P & C NEWS Today see’s us introduce a new Canteen Menu. There have been only a few changes and a few price rises. Again I stress it pains me to put up prices but as I have said our suppliers don’t charge us children’s prices. Of course there will be a week’s grace and that will hopefully give everyone enough time to refer to it and the new prices. As previously said, hot chocolates will now be available at recess. The most important change is that our HOT FOOD at recess will now HAVE TO BE ORDERED. We are finding that on some days we have a lot of wastage with left overs from our hot food sold over the counter.

News from the Snack Shack Thanks to all our volunteers who have been in this week with special mention to our Book Fair helpers. Thank you to the following parents - Phil Woolsey for cooking the BBQ, Janine & Emily Cummings for manning and serving the BBQ, Kelly & Avelyn for running a very busy canteen all day. I would also like to thank Diane Della and Jesse Patterson for their constant support and kind words. The Canteen is experiencing some major changes and will now operate from 10.00 – 2.00pm. All lunch orders need to be in the white box outside the office by 10.00am. With less time to prepare we need to be even more organised. If you don’t have lunch bags at home (they can be purchased at supermarkets) please write your child’s

name, class and order on an envelope and include 10c for the bag, then have your child place that in the white box located outside the office. We have quite a few children who wander up at recess to write an order for lunchtime as they don’t have bags at home, this is way too late to do this, it needs to be done before school please. Please ensure your child receives instructions on how to place an order in the morning as the Canteen won’t be open until 10.00am. Same for uniforms, if you cannot make it through the day please place money and order in an envelope and again place this in the white box, we will sort it out and deliver it to your child’s class when we have some spare time. Thank you Jody Phillis – Canteen Coordinator
