Country Clean site a ‘priority’
THE controversial Country Clean waste depot in Churchfield has had a “poor level of compliance” at Environmental Protection Agency inspections and is now a national priority for the agency. It has emerged that the EPA has inspected the site six
times already this year, since it was granted a licence in January, with non-compliant odours identified on five occasions. The agency has received 34 complaints about odours since May. Concerned residents picketed the depot
yesterday, and blocked the path of Country Clean trucks at the entrance to the premises in Churchfield, for around an hour-and-a-half. A meeting between management and residents, with a local mediator, is due to take place today. ● See page four.
A notice sent out to parents by school management ahead of the new term has informed them of the policy change as “one of our pupils has a severe allergy to peanuts which could prove life threatening if they are exposed to any peanut products. “As a result all peanut products are banned from the school until further notice. This includes peanut butter in sandwiches and some cereal bars, amongst many other food items.” Proteins in peanuts and other foods can cause anaphylactic reactions in people with allergies. The food does not even need to be eaten in all cases, with reactions caused by breathing in particles in the air or touching surfaces contaminated with allergens. Dublin teenager Emma Sloan died tragically last December from an allergic reaction to food eaten accidently in a restaurant and St Multose’s new policy comes shortly after food allergies made headlines internationally when a four-year-old English girl lost consciousness on a flight from Tenerife after another passenger ignored warnings against eating peanuts onboard. Professor Jonathan Hourihane, a leading allergy expert and Head of Department, Paediatrics & Child Health at UCC, said communication was key: “We are very keen that families engage with schools before entry to minimise worries.” ● See pages two and three.
