Pickpockets preying on women shopping in city

MIDDLE-aged and elderly women in particular are being urged to watch their valuables as a spate of pickpocketing has hit the city.

Superintendent Barry McPolin of Anglesea Garda Station has warned that an influx of shoppers coming up to Christmas has led to an increase in thefts. “It’s that time of year again coming up to Christmas when we are asking people to be more vigilant,” he said. “We have noticed an increase in incidents of theft in the city centre and shopping centres on the outskirts.” The profile of people being targeted is primarily middle-aged to elderly women, in what Supt McPolin described as “opportunistic crimes”. “People are casually and surreptitiously taking purses from handbags that have been left down if people are trying on clothes, or have just been left open,” he added.

Women who are socialising are also being warned to be vigilant of bags or coats left on the back of chairs. Phones and purses are routinely being lifted when people aren’t paying attention. “This is happening on a nightly basis across the city. We are working with security in premises and have put strong preventative measures in place but it is difficult when in busy environments,” warned Supt McPolin. “The responsibility is on people to mind their property. Unless people are vigilant things will be taken.” Anglesea Street are also making an appeal for people to guard against rogue tradespeople attempting to swindle people out of tens of thousands of euro for household repairs that are either substandard, not completed or unnecessary. “Be very wary who you are dealing with.
