The identity Parliament exists in ‘a future’ of Southampton where identity is not only ingratiated within the daily activities of the people but also a state of affairs governed by a localised guild is established in order to combat future tendencies of identity loss, consequently creating a place that is influenced by the everyday social aspects of community. A place that adapts localised policies that enable the protection and sustenance its identity.

SITE CONTEXT UP715202

The challenge to utilize the medium of architecture to revive the culture and identity of Southampton is an exciting one.

***

Southampton is a port city with population of 253,651 and it is the largest city in the Hampshire county council. A neighbour to other historical cities like Portsmouth and Winchester, positioned a meagre 111km from the English capital . Southampton is a city rich with historical events, the RMS Titanic, the spitfire and also its involvement in the transpirations of the WWII .

The Identity Parliament

Southampton’s cultural presence is dwindling into obscurity, with its inability to maintain its own local and societal narrative. Although it boasts maintenance of cultural edifices such as the old Southampton medieval town walls and the Tudor house museum as well historic merchant houses and wine cellars . The city of Southampton is still requires a state of cultural cohesion exemplified through a socially influenced construct and cultural narrative. The art scene is on rise within the city with the establishment of contemporary and innovative art galleries such as the Southampton City gallery, The city Centre and the John Hansard Gallery at the university of Southampton. These are all proactive efforts towards creating a vibrant cultural presence and enriching social engagement within the city. This project brief aims to define the concept and methodology of implementation of an architectural design capable of effecting the identity of Southampton, but also to test the limits the social and cultural status of Southampton and intensify its culture through architecture. The aspirations of the architecture is to create a meeting place for the development and establishment of a local identity. A space that can act as a cultural incubator, a space that accounts for and nurtures the ‘New Narrative‘ of Southampton. Giving the city the potential to contend for societal accolades such as the upcoming city of culture 2021.

SITE

UP715202

The decision for choosing this site did not occur simply as a result of its suitability regarding the proposed program and typology but for its advantageous location as far as mobility but also for its immediate connection to Southampton city centre and Southampton central train station. The Area includes proximity to the river itchen and also its proximity to the edge allows an interrogation of the edge condition of Southampton city centre as a driver of engaging social activity, identity and culture. A strong position within the city fabric, amplifying the connection of mobility makes it viable for urban economical endeavours, and a possibility to strengthen economical links to the greater Hampshire area. ANALYSIS Areas of city edge occupied by Industry

Industry v Southampton City

The Identity Parliament

The highlighted areas show the ratio of industry occupied spaces to the city spaces. Consequently this coincides with the areas of the waters edge that is accessible by the public. The implication being that spaces that allow for a vibrant public waterfront is non existent and presents an interesting challenge that this projects intends to tackle.

THEORETICAL ANALYSIS

Culture now?

The Identity Parliament

Community interactivity

Culture now?

The nature of public spaces that enable social interaction at the present takes the form of malls and shopping plazas.

UP715202

As much as these social/public spaces create a communal space, they lack in enabling a sense of interaction akin to a city aspiring to create an idiosyncratic identity.

Place-Making For Social Sustainability Place-making contributes to social and economic developments by improving physical the quality of the physical and build environments respectively. Social issues are related to the quality of the physical and built environment and suggests that such issues can be resolved by developing the environment which means, especially relating to socially and physically dilapidated areas such as the western edge of Southampton The design of place for this site is driven by the particularities and character of the eastern edge. The creation place is a lyrical endeavour and needs to consider the needs and opportunities of the society and immediate location in relation to its wider context.

BUILDING SKIN PATTERN

One of the many aspirations of the ‘Identity parliament’ was the utility of an architectural language that exemplified rhythm, motion and consequently pattern making. Following the research conducted in the thesis preparation unit and the establishment of a set of delicate drawings or “e-motional glyphs“, transcribed into a motif . These e-motional glyphs will be translated onto the facade of the building proposal as a means of celebrating Southampton’s history in

pattern making and textile trade.
