ABBY BERRY 2

I play trombone in the concert band—the largest ensemble on campus, with musicians of all skill levels. It’s perfect for someone who wants to play in an ensemble but isn’t looking for a huge time commitment. I even have a music scholarship! This means I get $2,000 a year for participating in a music ensemble AND I get to take weekly lessons from a trombone professor. I’m also secretary of the club Ultimate Frisbee team. This is where I met the majority of my friends freshman year.

Psychology and Scandinavian studies | Ultimate Frisbee and trombone player, good friend

My friends and I can talk for hours! One of our favorite spots when the weather is nice is the patio outside the Brew by the Slough. It’s surrounded by trees and makes me feel like I’m in an enchanted forest.

Augustana has at least 150 student groups. Start a new one any time— it’s easy. All you need are a few willing friends.

Ultimate Frisbee is one of 25 club sports on campus. The team competes at colleges across Illinois and hosts an annual tournament here at our PepsiCo Center.

4

[These buildings actually are across the Mississippi River, in Davenport, Iowa.]

A favorite activity on campus? You will never guess.

The Quad Cities? It’s like four cities in one. Check out the music scene. Get authentic Mexican food, or your Portillo’s favorite. See Old Main’s dome from the ferris wheel at our famous ballpark.

OK, it’s BINGO. But this is not your grandma’s BINGO. Try it. Crew practices on the Mississippi River. The equestrian club carpools to the stables. 14 Greek organizations volunteer all over the Quad Cities. Some groups, like eSports or SAGA art & literary journal or Augie Acres urban farmers, have everything they need right here on campus.

LU CA S S I M O N 6

The basketball team was on the first leg of our Italy/ France/Spain trip, and after a long bus ride, we hiked to the top of a mountain at Lake Como, Italy. We had a delicious 5-course meal at the top of that mountain, at the oldest winery in Lake Como.

The CCIW Tournament Championship against North Central my junior year was at the Carver Center in front of a sold-out crowd—definitely the place to be on a Saturday night.

Accounting and business administration | Varsity basketball player, balancer of athletics and academics, traveler, CORE peer career mentor I work in CORE on campus, helping students create and edit résumés and cover letters—even helping with basic job search. I’ve had help, too. For example, an Augie grad gave me a tip to apply for one of two inaugural James A. Sikich Scholarships for accounting, and I got it!

7

Carver Crazies go all out for Vikings basketball—especially when the men’s team advanced to the DIII National Championships in 2017 and 2018.

8

Augustana is in the top 10 in the nation, #1 in our conference and #1 in Illinois for number of Academic All-Americans. Completed in 2021: The new Peter J. Lindberg, M.D., Center for Health and Human Performance. The center will house a new program in kinesiology, a natatorium, and more. With the new swimming facilities, we’ll add varsity water polo.

About 50% of students compete in varsity, intramural or club sports.

Men’s varsity teams: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Water Polo, Wrestling Women’s varsity teams: Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Water Polo, Wrestling

CELINA RIPPEL 10

I work with more than 200 clients to help build their websites, and do other design work and marketing projects. This is an experience I truly believe I could not have gotten anywhere else.

11

Business administration–marketing and graphic design | EDGE (Entrepreneurial) Center project manager, mentor appreciator

I love that in my graphic design classes we have opportunities to develop professionally. Holly Scholl is a graduate who spoke to our class. She actually had the same job as me in the EDGE Center, so it was inspiring to see how she uses her education in the workplace. Doug is amazing. I guess technically he’s my boss, but he’s basically family at this point. We are always bouncing ideas off of each other while working on projects. I’m confident that my experience through EDGE will get me a job after I graduate. How many graduates can say they had two years of real project management experience in college?

CORE is a network of amazing advisors, experiences and resources all focused on your future. Visit CORE during all four years at Augustana, and track your career preparation with your Viking Score.

12

Augie Choice: up to $2,000 to support your internship, research or study abroad. More than 55% of Augustana students study abroad. Augie Choice can make it happen.

Go to CORE for help finding the best internship, for unbeatable hands-on experience before you graduate. More than 70% of the Class of 2020 had at least one internship.

Go to CORE for review of your cover letter, résumé, statement of purpose and other application materials for jobs or graduate school.

Not sure of your direction in college or after graduation? Career Coaches in CORE can help you think through what you want to do, and who you want to be.

13

Do good work for real clients through the Upper Mississippi Center (UMC) or EDGE Center in CORE. With the UMC, students and faculty work on projects to solve environmental challenges faced by local communities. In the EDGE Center, students meet clients’ needs for graphic and web design, advertising, video production, event planning and more.

Graduates’ career placement rate* was 99% in 2018, 98.5% in 2019, and 96% for the Class of 2020, which graduated near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I think Augustana is a great place to study music. The ability to double-major is so supported. Being able to combine music and neuroscience—this is where I wanted to be.

14

I came from Colorado to Augustana because most of my family, who live around Chicago, suggested it. When I came here, I ended up loving the people. The music faculty are so incredibly helpful. Personally, I am very fond of my own cello professor.

He brings the precision of the sciences to his music, and vice versa, he takes the passion of music to his science. And I think that’s going to make him a very successful person, inside and outside.

Music performance and neuroscience | Cellist, mentor appreciator, balancer of both sides of the brain

15

About 25% of students perform in music, theatre, musical theatre or dance. Among the places to perform: the Brunner Theatre Center, an outdoor pavilion and the intimate, acoustically excellent Wallenberg Hall.

16

Choose from several choral and chamber ensembles, bands, orchestra, jazz combos, opera and oratorio. The three major ensembles—Augustana Choir, Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra—tour each year in the region, around the country or overseas.

Want to travel and perform with the band in Spain or with the choir in Japan? You can use your Augie Choice $2,000 for travel expenses.

You don’t have to be a music, art or theatre arts major to stay active or get an arts scholarship up to $4,000 each year.

17

Re-creation of Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts began in 2021. Its new academic, rehearsal and performance spaces will shine as brightly as the student artists and musicians who stun their audiences every year.

JACOB WASHINGTON 18

As historian for the Black Student Union, talking about current events, whether they are very serious or comical, brings a highlight to my day. It’s interesting to hear everyone’s viewpoint on the topic.

Communication studies, multimedia journalism and mass communication Special Collections has always been an interesting place for me, to see the same places we go to every day, at a different time in history. Emma is very helpful when exploring the history of the Black Student Union. I am very grateful she is so passionate about this integral group to Augustana’s history.

Rope Pull at Homecoming is exhilarating. But I don’t know what was worse—losing in general, or losing with me in front for everyone to see lol. I couldn’t believe we lost to Anime Club this year, considering we won against them last year in a matter of seconds.

19

Leader, historian, library enthusiast, tug of war front man

Students come to Augustana from all over the world. We are in the top 25 baccalaureate colleges in the country for percentage of international students.

Look around campus—there’s a diversity of people, perspectives, ideas and experiences. What does a community like this mean for you? More growth on campus, and more opportunities out in the world.

20

It’s seriously fun to celebrate in new ways. Latinx Unidos serves up churros and hot chocolate with music and dance at the Tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Vietnamese student association hosts a Pho-tastic dinner. There’s a Hindu Diwali festival in the fall, and Sankta Lucia arrives with a smörgåsbord every December.

21

In The Gerber Center dining hall, choose from Chinese, Indian, Italian and Mexican food, Halal foods, soups and salads, seafood, burgers and sandwiches, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and of course pizza.

Don’t be surprised to see food art at the salad or dessert station. It could be Old Main sculpted from a watermelon, or a Thanksgiving turkey that’s a giant Rice Krispies treat. (Those drumsticks go fast.)

By working closely with my advisors,

and in local vet clinics…. I traveled to South Africa and experienced another side of the veterinary field; began on-campus research with one of the most amazing mentors; spent half a term in Holden Village learning about nature, history and spirituality; and became a therapeutic riding instructor with New Kingdom Trailriders.

Dr. Tim Muir, biology

Biology/pre-veterinary medicine | Researcher, mentor appreciator, horseback rider, international student, 2019 graduate

23

After graduating I worked full-time as a veterinary assistant at the Rock Island Animal Hospital just down 7th avenue. That summer I returned to my home country of Colombia to begin vet school. So many different individuals from all around the Quad Cities impacted my life in many ways, and I miss seeing them every week. Their friendship will always be a part of me.

The Quad Cities! It’s home to 4 cities, 3 bridges, 2 states and 1 great college of the liberal arts and sciences: Augustana. Make it your home for 4 years—you’ll have access to great internships, jobs, research sites, and so many other ways to get involved in this community of 400,000. And you’ll have a lot of fun.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Academic All-Americans — These are students honored for their excellence at both their studies and their sport. We have many such students, compared with colleges and universities nationwide. Augustana’s campus culture promotes balance in academics and everything else. Baccalaureate —This refers to colleges that offer the bachelor’s degree. Augustana offers the bachelor of arts (B.A.). Black squirrel — The big cutout in Celina’s photo is a large black squirrel in an EDGE T-shirt. There are lots of real black squirrels on campus, though none are this large. Both sides of the brain — This refers to the left side (quantitative thinking) and right side (creative thinking), generally speaking. CCIW — Our Division III athletics conference is the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, the group of colleges and universities with whom the Vikings compete. CORE — This stands for Careers, Opportunities, Research, Exploration. You might have noticed it spelled out on the CORE photo. EDGE — Students get all kinds of entrepreneurial experience at this center in CORE. Why EDGE? Maybe because it gives you a professional edge?

28

Holden Village — This is a beautiful retreat center in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. One of Augustana’s J-term (January term) study-away programs sends students and faculty to Holden Village for 3 weeks of intensive coursework and inspiration. Pho — It’s a delicious Vietnamese broth-based soup. The Slough — This long pond runs along the south side of campus. A path (Swanie Slough Path) takes you from lower to upper campus and back. You’ll see turtles, sometimes a bullfrog or heron, and way too many goldfish. Smörgåsbord — This is a Swedish term for a large and festive buffet. Augustana has one as part of our Christmas celebrations. It includes herring, as our founders were Swedish. Quad Cities — The cities include Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. However, East Moline makes us quint cities. The world’s 4th-largest river, the Mississippi River, runs through the Quad Cities. The population of the metro area is about 400,000.

This is the end of your Augustana viewbook, but it’s the beginning of something big. At Augustana, your future will open up to you in ways you never thought possible. Four years here will show you how. Explore what’s possible. Your curiosity can lead to great things, for you and for the world you care about. It all begins with visiting Augustana.
