A Year of

Celebration Annual Report 2010-2011

I

hope you enjoy this tribute to Augusta Prep’s 50th year, truly a year of and a year for celebration. Fifty years of educational excellence culminated in a year of “Prep Pride” – a time for looking back over all the accomplishments throughout the School’s rich history, for remembering the traditions which are now a part of our story, and for acknowledging the many whose hard work and steadfast loyalty built this exceptional school. From “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” to a festive 50th Anniversary Gala to singing “Happy Birthday” with students on September 6th, only one day after the school’s actual fiftieth birthday – scores of alumni, students, teachers, parents, and friends joined to celebrate this milestone. All that celebration sparked renewed enthusiasm for current programs and generated momentum for new projects. “Nourishing Our Roots To Grow Strong For Our Future” – what an appropriate theme for the Annual Fund marking the School’s 50th year! With the help of so many, we accomplished that goal – and met the challenges of the year with a strong foundation. Thanks to you, our 50th Anniversary Tree sprouted over 400 leaves and together, we raised over $170,000. The Annual Fund is vitally important; it bridges the gap between what tuition covers and the true cost of an Augusta Prep education. A strong Annual Fund assures that our students grow - get what they need to assure their strong educational growth. Thank you all for your support of the 2010-2011 Annual Fund and for so generously responding to our challenge to “Nourish Our Roots to Grow Strong For Our Future.”

The Statement of Activities graphs for year end June 30, 2011, are the audited representations of the school’s revenues and expenses. The revenue activity graph outlines the related categories of income and gains by percent. The key source of income is tuition and related fees, supported by unrestricted contributions, endowment donations and earnings. The expense graph illustrates percentages of expense and loss categories with the greater part budgeted for program services and instructional.

Twelve outstanding years of Jack Hall’s leadership was celebrated in a special Jack Hall Day in the spring. I offer my personal thanks to Jack for his support in this smooth transition starting last year and continuing even today. We are off to a fantastic fifty-first year. As we cross that important threshold, our sights are set on the future. As this year progresses, we will focus on strategic thinking to assure that the school’s second half century rivals its first in vision, in strength, and in success – no small feat in a world so rapidly changing and with unprecedented educational and economic challenges. I look forward to navigating that future as part of this amazing and forward-thinking community. Gratefully,

Rebecca B. Gilmore Head of School

I

t was a year of celebration for the Augusta Prep community and I thank you for being involved. This year’s brochure highlights the many events which drew so many of us back to the campus and to additional special off-campus events. We thank Prep’s terrific staff as well as the Prep community’s friends, teachers, supporters and army of volunteers for making these celebratory events happen so successfully! To prepare for the anniversary year, we researched the school’s history, and that research has given us all an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of Prep’s first fifty years. It is gratifying to know that the strength and importance of Prep’s mission has remained steadfast throughout that history. Augusta Prep provides the very best academic program in the area while assuring that our students also enjoy and participate in the programs which develop their athletic and artistic interests and strengthen their character. These programs for our students would not exist without your support. Augusta Prep fulfills an important educational niche in the greater CSRA community which cannot be overstated. As a premier, non-sectarian, Pre-School-12 school, Prep offers an educational choice which enhances our community’s ability to attract professionals to the area. Thus, your support not only impacts our children, grandchildren and future generations, but enables Prep to play a pivotal role in attracting and retaining a talented workforce whose families and businesses greatly contribute to the area’s growth and the financial and cultural health of our community.

Members Miriam Atkins, M.D. Jan Hutchinson Bilodeau ’73 Floride Dickert Mary Helen Hull Robert Kuhar Debbie Layman Robert Osborne, Jr. Camilla Reid Dennis Sodomka Sarah Stachura Mary Thomas, M.D. Thank you to the many whose names appear on the following pages. Your financial support of the Annual Fund, the 50th Endowment Campaign, the Georgia GOAL Scholarship program, the Golf Classic, and your volunteer spirit are all important to the School’s success. Together, your gifts support the people, the programs and the physical plant which makes an Augusta Prep education possible. More importantly, your actions foster a spirit of giving and “giving back” that is a vital lesson for our children to learn. Our children are more likely to give to others if they see us give. Thank you for your generous support and all that you do for Augusta Prep. With Gratitude,

James M. Hull President, Board of Trustees

In Memory of Dr. Wallace “Mack” McLeod Dr. Wallace “Mack” McLeod, former Prep parent and longtime board member, passed away in January 2011. Three of Mack and Natalie’s children graduated from Augusta Prep: Jeremy ’99, Susannah ’03, and Caroline ’06. Mack had served on Prep’s Board of Trustees since 1998 and was Chair of the Board Development Committee for eight years.
