Augusta Preparatory Day School, founded in 1960, serves students in grades preschool through 12. Admission is by formal application, interview, recommendation, and standardized testing. Qualified students are admitted without regard to race, creed, color, sex, national, or ethnic origin. Students of color represent twenty-seven percent (27%) of total enrollment. The academic year includes 176 days divided into two semesters. Upper School classes meet daily in seven 47-minute academic periods with exams at the end of each semester. Augusta Preparatory Day School is located in Martinez, Georgia, a suburb of Augusta, Georgia. Augusta is Georgia’s second largest metro area and second oldest city located on the Georgia/South Carolina border, about 150 miles east of Atlanta, GA and 70 miles west of Columbia, SC. APDS serves students from the Central Savannah River Area which includes: Columbia, Richmond, Burke, and McDuffie counties in Georgia, as well as Aiken and Edgefield counties in South Carolina. Augusta is a regional center of medicine, biotechnology, and military. The Medical District employs over 25,000 people, and Augusta is home to the state’s only public health sciences graduate university. Within the next few years, the city is expected to experience a dramatic increase in population growth with the addition of the United States Army Cyber Command located at Fort Gordon, a multi-mission, multi-service military installation. Accreditation and Memberships Augusta Preparatory Day School is jointly accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school maintains membership in the following organizations: National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), Georgia Independent School Association (GISA), National Middle School Association (NMSA), Educational Records Bureau (ERB), National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC), The College Board, National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), Cum Laude Society, and National Honor Society (NHS). Augusta Preparatory Day School is a Malone Family Foundation School—the only school in the state of Georgia to hold this distinction and one of only 50 schools nationwide. Athletics The Augusta Prep Cavaliers compete in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Region 4-AAA. Since 2010, various Cavalier athletic teams have won 28 region championships and 10 state championships. COURSE OFFERINGS FOR THE CLASS OF 2017 Twenty-two (22) Carnegie units in grades 9-12 are required for graduation. Middle School classes may count as prerequisites. One-half unit is awarded for semester courses, one unit for full-year courses. Independent Study and Service Practicum in various academic areas can be arranged by student-teacher agreement contingent on an approved syllabus. A student may request a service practicum to work as an assistant to a teacher or office staff. In addition to course work, all seniors deliver an original speech to the Upper School student body. Only grades earned while attending Augusta Preparatory Day School are included when calculating a student’s official GPA. We do not calculate grades from other secondary schools. Students are graded on a 100 point scale with 10-point bands. Also included on the student’s transcript is a weighted, cumulative GPA calculation converted to the 4.0 scale based on quality points outlined on the right. The cumulative GPA is weighted in AP, Honors and College Prep classes by adding 5, 4 or 3 points respectively on the 100 point scale and .5, .4 or .3 points respectively on the 4.0 scale to the earned grades listed on the transcript. Augusta Preparatory Day School does not rank students.
