ADPT Final Year Thesis Project
Rethinking the way we use everyday objects, Adpt features a series of adaptors that transform everyday objects around our home into temporary organization tools; namely, a surface, hook, and bar. It questions the need for new organizational products by allowing users to adapt conventional household objects for new organizational functions.
03 | ADPT
Home Organization This project begun as a curious investigation into the peculiar behaviours of home organization. Inspired by the users’ ingenuity in adapting their personal spaces, I started to question the rigid roles of organization tools and objects. ADPT is a series of adaptors that create temporary organization spaces as and when we need. By leveraging on commonly found household items, a temporary surface, hook, or bar is created. ADPT questions the rigid roles of organizational tools while fulfilling the needs for temporary organization.
05 | ADPT
Adapting Objects 1 | Book Surface Inspired by the behavioural tendency to accumulate objects around our bed scape, I saw the opportunity to use a book as a temporary surface to organize devices and small knick knacks. 2 | Cane Bar Adapting “bar-like objects found around the house such as canes and walking sticks into temporary hangers along shower cubicles or door ledges. 3 | Stationary Hook Noticing how people tend to lean umbrellas, bags and other bulky items along the edge of the table, this adaptor transforms commonly found desk top stationary into temporary hooks.
07 | ADPT
Open-Source Platform As these objects are derived from human habits, it is then appropriate that users are given the autonomy of customizing their own adaptors. Adaptors are available on an online platform which introduces a new method for product fabrication. Users would have a hand in creating their personalised adaptors which are fed back into the market to expand the product range. A self-sustaining product fabrication system. After customizing their own adaptors, or picking one from the pool of products, users can then get it 3D printed at the nearest shop.
09 | ESPER
Esper In collaboration with Dell Designed with Tan Sei Yee & Tan Xin Yu
Observing a rise in the trend of self-diagnosis as medical information grows more widely available, we imagine a future where medical care would be seamlessly integrated into the lives of people. Esper, is a speculative home medical system which prints out your daily medical intake in an unassuming sticker form. It anticipates your daily activities through gesture detection and regulates the medicine intake accordingly - it activates after meal times and inhibits before driving to prevent drowsiness.
11 | ESPER
Diagnosis through Remote Sensing Unobtrusive daily diagnosis is achieved through routinely used items such as toothbrushes and slippers. Selected items measure temperature and blood pressure, and a variation in reading will trigger immediate diagnosis of the anomaly.
Medicine Intake through Gesture Detection Having a hard time memorising your medicine intake schedules? With gesture detection, the medicine is automatically released through the sticker patch when appropriate gestures such as “eating is detected. To prevent unintended drowsiness, Esper is also attentive to your daily needs and schedules. Medicine intake is inhibited before driving and even during an important meeting.

Body Monitoring Esper knows when you are getting better. Medicine dosage is continuously adjusted according to your body condition.
15 | TUPPERWRAP
TupperWrap In collaboration with Tupperware Designed with Ivan Chiok & Koh Jing Ting
Are you skipping breakfast because you are rushing for time? Tupperwrap aims to provide an alternative to this trend by giving users the option of a quick preparation kit for a healthy homemade breakfast. Tupperwrap seamlessly bridges the steps involved in food preparation, packing as well as eating on-thego for added time efficiency. All these to cater to that morning mad rush, so you can enjoy an extra bit of sleep and still be able to pack a healthy breakfast. Wraps are the healthy breakfast food of choice as it allows for a variation of ingredients from day to day and requires a relatively short preparation time.
17 | TUPPERWRAP
Quick Prep Through a quick change to a grating lid, users can efficiently grate a variety of ingredients such as carrots, cucumber, etc. This forgoes the time consuming process of having to chop ingredients and the user only needs a small working space - in consideration of ever-shrinking urban kitchens. A separate microwavable container is also available for keeping cooked food.
The Perfect Size Is your wrap tearing at the seams because you packed in too much ingredients? Tupperwrap ensures that you have the “perfect sized wrap everytime. With simple guides and containers that comes in the optimal size, your wrap will always have the right balance of greens and meat.
19 | TUPPERWRAP
Prep + Pack The silicon surface for wrap-making also doubles as the container for packing. This seamlessly combines the processes of prepping with packing. No more fumbling around the kitchen, looking for disparate tools, as Tupperwrap has all you need to make that perfect wrap.
Eating On-The-Go Tupperwrap can be conveniently opened from the ends to eat your wrap whenever and wherever you want, during the small pockets of time waiting for the bus or even while rushing to the office.
21 | CANOPE
Canope A marry of the Art and Science. Chromatography is traditionally used as a scientific technique to separate dye pigments. Combined with the process of wax dipping, the piece takes on a life of its own, extending into delicate free-formed patterns of interlocking branches. The result is a psychedelic piece embodying the growth like characteristic of chromatography. This project celebrates the imperfections and uniqueness of each artisanal craft piece. An ode to artisanal craftsmanship.
23 | CANOPE
The Process The process starts off with corrugating the cloth which is then hung over a make-shift rack for wax dipping. After rounds of dipping, the wax covered cloth is crushed and then placed back onto the rack. A line is then drawn near the bottom of the cloth and the whole set up is placed onto a tray. This is where the magic happens. As alcohol is dripped into the tray, the ink begins to grow upwards and fills up the cracks between the wax. Much of the gratification is in anticipating and watching the ink slowly interweave into a matrix of coloured veins.
25 | HANABI
Hanabi Designed with Lee Xu Xun & Brandon Cheng
Hanabi is an interactive light installation that captures the mesmerising and immersive experience of watching fireworks. This is combined with an audio input, inspired by the relatable and engaging experience of talking to the fan as a child. The project encourages self expressive, as the audience project their voices and watch with wonderment as the light responds with bursts of pattern display.
27 | HANABI
The Set Up Variation in voice input, mainly pitch and volume, is mapped to an array of lighting display. Users could manipulate bursts of lighting patterns and colour with their voices. The hardware includes 2 fans that power five spinning light displays connected by a series of pulley systems. The coloured lighting is programmed into strips of led which creates mesmerizing displays as it spins.
29 | HANABI
The Experience Hanabi is an interactive lighting installation that enables self-expression as participants project their voices and watch as it takes on a tangible form through lighting patterns and colour. It plays upon the childhood nostalgia of talking to the fan overlapped with immersive and awe-inspiring experience of viewing fireworks. The result is an experience that empower viewers with ability to watch with wonderment as the light dances along with their voices.
31 | AMIBA
Amiba Designed with Chew Mei Jun & Chia Yong Qing
What if balloons could move? Amiba is a children’s play kit which not only inspires balloon creations but also brings them to life through movement. The movement is made possible through the expansion of a single tube of balloon attached along the centre. The kit, which comes in a box includes all you need for animating your own balloon creations, as well as basic intructions to get you started.
33 | AMIBA
Animating Balloons The basic module comprises of a single tube of balloon folded into an “A formation. A deflated tube of balloon connected to an air pump on one end is attached across the center. A valve controls the air pressure and through hand pumping, the balloon comes to life and inches forward across the surface like a crawling worm.
Many rounds of trial and error are carried out to imitate a smooth movement. This translates into the varies attachments on the balloon. Such as the one-way friction pad to ensure single direction movement and marble weights to keep the balloon animal upright. A series of valves are also designed to control air pressure and directional inflation of the balloon.
35 | AMIBA
The Kit In the kit, you would find all the components needed to create your own animated balloon. This includes 3 instructional cards ranging in difficulty to get you started. After mastering the basic component, you are free to let your imagination run wild and concoct your own animated creature.
37 | VIDE
Vide Designed with Lee Han Xi, Sherina Tan & Sharon Lam
A gratifying iron. Aesthetic is in itself a function, enhancing the user’s experience through an objects’s beauty. The project is an exploration of form, where aesthetics becomes a mean to evoke a sense of gratification and pleasure from the user. The main design focus is decidedly the bold and clean curve cut right through the body of the iron, which creates a balance of the positive and negative space. A balance of the tangible and imaginary space created by the cut.
39 | VIDE
Form Exploration Through relentless improvement of even the most minuscule of details such as the elevation of the handle, the shape of the curve, the proportion of the body and the finishing of the edge, the outcome is an iron that is both gratifying and yet does not compromise on its basic functionalities. All details, such as the water tank cap, steam button and temperature dial are carefully considered to complete the product.
41 | GATES
Gates A free-lance project for a transport company that required basic renders for MRT gates. The gates were designed based on the specifications provided by the client, namely fixed dimensions, material choices and width of the isles. The main design consideration was to have a unibody, seamless design, where the part-lines are concealed along the edges. The uniformly rounded centre-piece as well as the stream-lined form are designed to evoke a sense of flow, subtlely guiding users through the gates. The slightly tilted front panel also acts to guide users towards the left side of the gates.
43 | JEWELLERY DESIGN
Jewellery Design Beyond school cirriculum, I also create the occassional jewellery pieces to sell. Inspired by childhood games and memorabilia, the jewellery I create captures the essence of playfulness and nostalgia of popular childhood games, such as spirography and chromatography. The creations are more than elegant, decorative pieces and hints at a familiarity and longing of a forgotton past. For the complete collection, visit my online shop at: thelittlechilli.etsy.com
