and dried. Even with today s modern appliances to streamline the process, the bottom line is that someone still has to do the laundry. While others may not acknowledge or show appreciation for those who execute this monotonous chore, it would soon become obvious if those in charge of laundry decided to go on strike.

The Apostle Paul spoke about the church being like a body (I Corinthians 12). The body has various parts, but the individual members of the body help serve a bigger purpose. Some of these bodily functions are certainly less glamorous than others, but they all work cooperatively for the same goal. When I see our people so consistently engaged in these places, I am tremendously grateful for them. And I also know that they receive back from giving. As Jesus said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. One of the best ways we show we are Christians is in our service. As Jesus said, Put it into practice. As James said, Faith without works is

Jesus said it like this: (Matt 25:37-40) Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go

figured out I m not in control, God is. His son s death seemed so unfair; he had recently gotten a great job and life seemed to be going so well. But as Tom worked through his grief, God brought him to a place of trust. Though struggles and pain are inevitable in life, Tom now knows he doesn t have to carry them alone. I don t have to wring my hands at challenges; I can pass the burdens of life onto God. Looking back, Tom can see how God orchestrated circumstances that have opened the door to service. I ve always had a talent to fix things, even since I was a kid, says Tom. He recalls using a bundle of tomato stakes to build sideboards for his wagon. Later in life he worked with Salvation Army s Boys and Girls club repairing resale furniture. Even his business fabricating gaskets for heavy machinery refined his woodworking skills. It s the same concept, you re just working with a different material. At the old Sheridan Road Asbury facility, a Children s Ministry staff member approached Tom about building a ping-pong table. It wasn t a coincidence that at that same time he was repairing one for the Salvation Army. It helped him make a new table from scratch and it is still enjoyed by our kids today. When Asbury moved to the new location Tom was eager to serve. He approached Joanne Miller, Director of Asbury s Preschool, I fix furniture, what can I do for you? What started with the repair of an easel has led to the construction of cabinets, staff mailboxes, stepstools,

and over 200 shelves. With the help of Methodist Men, Tom constructed 24 bathroom partitions for the toddler area in just seven days! He has also repaired 500 chair arms for some of the adult community areas. Tangible things like hand-built shelves and stools are a great reminder that God uses all people with all different talents. And even the smallest of jobs have resounding importance in the kingdom of God. Tom sees his service as

Blessed to be a Blessing ive years ago, Jim Light, owner of LaMode Clean-

F

ers called Asbury s Music Ministry and offered to clean the choir robes at no charge to the church. That first year the 175

robes were taken to the 41st Street LaMode location in two cars and a truck. Jim delivered them back to the church before Sunday, each wrapped in clear poly bags and looking pristine. The Music Ministry has been the grateful recipient of his generosity since then. Ten years ago, Jim, an Oklahoma State University graduate in Radio and Television Sales was tired of his job. He had worked for 18 years in the sales market when the offer to buy LaMode Cleaners surfaced. Because of the uniqueness of the offer and his friendship with the owner, Jim found it hard to pass up. He basically had to start from scratch in this new business. With the assurance that the former owner would stay on and teach Jim everything he knew about the dry cleaning business, Jim made the purchase. He quickly discovered that making a living in the cleaning industry is not an easy task. When Jim bought the business in the mid- 90s men and women wore suits to work everyday suits that had to be dry cleaned on a regular basis. Casual Friday became casual everyday and the dry cleaning business was hit hard. In addition to fewer clothes to clean, there were also lots of dry cleaners in town. Jim has built his business on the quality of his work. He enjoys the hours in by 6 a.m. home by 3 p.m. being his own boss and the challenge and fulfillment of making the business work. About five years ago Jim participated in Leadership Tulsa. One of its objectives stresses that businesses give back to the community. Jim took that a step further and said, What can I do for my community and my church? Asbury has blessed me so much that I wanted to do something for the church. As a dry cleaner it seemed a natural thing to clean the choir robes. As part of the Leadership Tulsa program, Jim was required to intern with a non-profit organization. He chose Volunteers of America and looked at his business to determine how he could help the community. Because of former sales connections with KOTV, the News on Six, he approached them and Volunteers of America with the idea of partnering to help the homeless in our area. Project Warmth became a reality. During the month of January KOTV, the News on Six and LaMode Cleaners receive gently used blankets, comforters and quilts for Project Warmth. Jim and his crew stay after hours and come in on days off to clean the blankets before the Volunteers of America distribute them to the homeless. Occasionally people donate blankets that are in pretty bad shape. Jim cleans them and then takes them to the SPCA or the German Shepherd Rescue. Not one blanket goes to waste. Since that beginning Jim and his crew have cleaned over 15,000 blankets. Though Jim s life has not been easy, neither personally nor in his career, he still finds ways to bless those who have blessed him, to be an example of Christ for all who know him. -Marti Morris ASBURY TIDINGS

I

thank God for Patty, my wife of 50

years, who has been my partner

in ministry from the very beginning. It seems that all through her life she has felt called to be in ministry. During the summer of her first year at OCU she served as the Youth Director and Secretary at Mayfair Heights Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. We were married in 1956 and have shared together in ministry since that time. God has blessed her in many ways, but the one thing that stands out for me is how she has been a Prayer Warrior through the years. She attended all the worship services on Sunday morning and night so she could undergird me in prayer(and oh, how I needed it, and still do) and so she could be with all the people of the church. -David Thomas

As a native Tulsan, I had always thought it would be great to marry an ORU girl because they all seemed to be beautiful, talented and godly. Robin certainly is that and much more. I found out later that Robin came to ORU from New York for a Christian education and to marry a pastor! God answered both of our prayers at TU! Robin, too, is called to ministry, which makes for like-minded hearts and goals. Her support as a pastor s wife is priceless and endless. She is my helpmate, prayer partner, lover and friend. I thank God daily for my precious bride. You re the best! I love you Honey. -Mark McAdow
