Andrew Burns Colwill Andrew is on of the original Bristol street artists. He is both the alpha and the omega of street art – his work having recently been described as ‘the next wave in street art’. Whether on walls or on canvas his work is fine art with a twist. It is simply stunning, using the rare ‘soak stain’ technique he redeveloped over an artistic career spanning fifty years. His work is never obvious – as a viewer you have to look hard but it is always rewarded with a hidden message. Like many artists before and since Bristol born Andrew Burns Colwill was a tearaway in his teens. The only way teachers could stop him from being disruptive was to leave him occupied at the back of the class to draw and paint. Though leaving school without qualifications his talent meant he always worked in art from painting backdrops and scenic work for TV and theatre or on the streets. At one point four buildings on Bristol’s (then popular punk scene) Park Street were canvases for his work. Always a prolific artist he was constantly creating new work. In the early days he used untreated canvas, developing techniques using curtain linings stretched over
hand made frames and household paints just to get the work out there. In the 80’s he played in punk bands, painted hundreds of paintings and created a spectacular exhibition at Ashton Court Mansion with over a 1,000 visitors. Those were the heady times which were fueled and then broken by a time of addiction. Burns Colwill was not defeated like many of his friends who did not make it through. He recovered through rehab and took himself to Greece to escape ‘the scene’. Andrew has been back in Bristol for a few years now, and the mediums he was experimenting with in the early days including soak stain techniques have become his preferred tools. He is constantly developing and currently doing some amazing work on split ply wood into the individual sheets giving his work a greater depth and perspective. Perhaps it is that depth and perspective which now defines his work. His work is subtle, reflective, not obvious – a viewer has to work at his painting and is rewarded with hidden insights, environmental, political and social commentary and humour.

20/50 Vision: Tomorrow’s Habitat In this May 2017 collection Andrew Burns Colwill presented a series of paintings that examine the paths we have chosen to take and raise this question: what are the consequences of these choices on our planet, ourselves and our children? He says: “The collection title, 20/50 vision, is a play on the term 20/20 vision and how my life experience has given me a slightly warped perspective of the world. 20/50 vision for me has two aspects; firstly a point of view that sometimes makes people a little uncomfortable but offers a wider and alternative perspective to the norm, and secondly my interpretation of how we as a species may be faring socially and economically by the year 2050.”
Arctic Scream Andrew’s Arctic Scream took this year’s Upfest by storm. Upfest is Europe’s largest street art festival attended by over three hundred street artists who are chosen from across the world to come and paint.

Airlifted By 2050 we could be completely out in the cold... the cream having been lifted from the British cake. What happened to the old empire I used to know as a kid, multicultural, rich in understanding and above all diplomatic and strong, never running away from disagreements with its tail between its legs slamming all the doors behind it.....

Allotment If we do not invest in food production for everybody in the arid zones of our planet..... We could end up with private farming areas protected by private security forces. Those who have land and money offering food for protection.....

Beef Tanks I’m hopeful that 2050 will be a massive decline in beef, meat and poultry livestock on our farms,with the slaughter house becoming a morbid fact of history.... Meat production being synthesized and grown in huge vats enabling all of us to eat, and starvation become a cured economic illness with of course the permission of said governments.

Fish Out of Water I knew a fish once who desperately wanted to be a bird He spent all his time jumping after money to buy himself some pretty wings... One day he jumped high and fast after some feathers floating by.... I haven’t seen my friend the fish since.

Misty Warming Woods It is refreshing to sometimes escape to a place oozing tranquility and gentle ancient magic, where minds can take a deep breath and deflate for awhile or two. I hope 2050 will offer many such camera free zones.

Pawnbroker I think that in the west our insane craving for the material and money has got a little out of control.... Lets hope by 2050 our understanding of the balance between luxury and necessity has matured enough to allow a healthy comfortable future for our home and all it’s residents.

Through the Eyes of an Ostrich Of his September collection Andrew says: 'An Ostrich has it’s head buried in the sand, worse than that it’s got Ray-Bans on. This exhibition is about what I see things happening around and people just ignoring it, or not being aware of it, or being aware of it but choosing not to do anything about it but just carrying on with their lives. This will cause us massive problems if we don’t start looking and understanding the environmental impact we are having for our children and our children’s children. People have got to start waking up.'
