Knotted Tube is a proposal for a residential highrise located at the corner of Market and Van Ness in San Francisco, CA. Based on a knot, Knotted Tubes consists of individual braced tubes that are tied together. This knotted hub celebrates the intersection of different programs and navigational pathways activated by a large open space where occupants of separate housing blocks can interact. By unbundling the traditional typology the structural “Knot” of steel outriggers and belt trusses allows the heart of the building to be open for new social spaces. The housing modules are organized into blocks of different housing types, all connected via the multiple tubes that run through them. The “Knot” is a break in the separation of the unit blocks, entangling the different programs and occupants. Through this entanglement, the building aims to prompt new social interfacing absent in the traditional residential highrise.
