How We Beat the All Blacks Edited by John Reason

In the last ten years Aurum has published some of the top prizewinning classic sports titles in the UK. At a time when the sports book market is growing exponentially, it is time to introduce these classics to a new generation of readers and sports fans. These six titles will be beautifully repackaged in a uniform series design as B-format paperbacks with flaps to enhance the collectors-item appeal, and will cross-promote the series. There will be a further six titles published as part of the series in 2014.

It remains a unique achievement. In 1971 the British Lions, including Ian McLaughlan, Barry John and David Duckham went to New Zealand and beat the All Blacks in a test series on their own soil. After the touring party had returned to the UK, the Lions captain John Dawes had the idea of organising a meeting to discuss the latest trends in rugby and offer the fruits of their experience in how to beat the greatest rugby team in the world. In the years since it was first published, it has assumed cult status as one of the best and most insightful books ever published about the game of rugby.

q August, 9781781311738, Paperback, £10.99, 160 pp A Social History of English Cricket Sir Derek Birley Acclaimed as a magisterial, classic work, this is an encyclopaedic survey of the game, from its humble origins to modern floodlit finishes. But it is also the story of English culture, mirrored in a sport that has always been a complex repository of our manners, hierarchies and politics. Superbly witty and humorous, this is a tour-de-force by one of the great writers on cricket.

q August, 9781781311769, Paperback, £9.99, 400 pp The Football Man Arthur Hopcraft Written just two years after England’s ’66 triumph when the national game was at its zenith, The Football Man is repeatedly quoted as the best book every written about the sport. This definitive, masterly study of football and society is a snapshot of a defining era in sporting history; changes and decisions were made in the sixties that created the game we know today. A long awaited reissue of the classic football ‘bible’.

q August, 9781781311516, Paperback, £10.99, 256 pp Bluebird and the Dead Lake John Pearson In 1964, in Australia’s remote outback, on the dazzling saltpan of Lake Eyre, Donald Campbell set out to drive his Bluebird car at over 400 miles an hour – faster than any man in history. Things went wrong from the start and, with death shimmering on the horizon before him, the lonely Campbell tried to hold his nerve until he broke the record. John Pearson’s classic book about Donald Campbell is an extraordinarily compelling and moving portrait of a modern tragic hero.

The Hurt Business Edited by George Kimball From Norman Mailer to Joyce Carol Oates, The Hurt Business is the ultimate boxing book covering a century of the greatest fighters and writers who have followed ‘the sweet science’. Beginning with Jack London’s account of the 1910 championship bout between Jack Johnson and James Jeffries (for which the Call of the Wildman called for and coined the term ‘The Great White Hope’), and ending with Carlo Rotella’s 2002 homage to Larry Holmes (‘Champion at Twilight’), The Hurt Business is a near century’s worth of rip-roaring reveal that belongs on the shelves of any fan of boxing or sublime sports writing.

q August, 9781781311790, Paperback, £12.99, 518 pp The Boys of Summer Roger Kahn ‘At a point in life when one is through with boyhood, but has not yet discovered how to be a man, it was my fortune to travel with the most marvellously appealing of teams.’ Voted one of the greatest sports books of all times, this masterpiece on the mid-20th century Brooklyn Dodgers chronicles the dreams of one of America’s most famous baseball teams.

Alwyn W. Turner is an acclaimed writer on postwar British culture and the author of Crisis? What Crisis? Britain in the 1970s, Rejoice! Rejoice! Britain in the 1980s and the ebook Things Can Only Get Bitter: The Lost Generation of 1992, all published by Aurum.

Crisis? What Crisis?

September 9781781310717 Paperback £9.99 320 pp 197x129 mm Rights: World

The 1970s. It was the best of times and the worst of times. Wealth inequality was at a record low, yet industrial strife was at a record high. These were the glory years of Doctor Who, but the darkest days of the Northern Ireland conflict. Beset by soaring inflation and social unrest, the consensus that had underpinned post-war Britain was unravelling, in spectacular fashion. A bold fusion of high politics and low culture, in which Enoch Powell and Tony Benn jostle for space with David Bowie and Margo Leadbetter, Crisis? What Crisis? presents a viewers’ history of this most demonised of decades. In doing so it lays bare a country torn between rival visions for its future and reveals how the optimism of the 1960s gave way to the conflict of the Thatcher years. ‘Masterful’ Roger Lewis, Mail on Sunday

When Margaret Thatcher was ousted from office in November 1990 many hoped that the decade to come would be more ‘caring’. Others dared to believe that the more radical policies of her revolution might be overturned. Across politics and culture there was a yearning for something the Iron Lady had infamously dismissed: society. Yet the forces unleashed during the 1980s were to prevent any simple turning back of the clock. The new Britain that emerged under John Major and Tony Blair was a paradox: economically unequal and culturally classless. Whilst Westminster agonised over sleaze, Northern Ireland and the ERM, the country outside became the playground of the New Lad and the Ladette, of Swampy and the YBAs, of Posh and Becks and Jarvis Cocker. Starting with a war in the Gulf and ending on 9/11, A Classless Society goes in search of this contradictory decade. What it finds is a nation anxiously grappling with new technologies, tentatively embracing new lifestyles, and, above all, forging a new sense of what it means to be British.

September 9781781310724 Paperback £9.99 368 pp 197x129 mm Rights: World

The 1980s may seem like recent history, but the Britain of 30 years ago was a thoroughly foreign country. Unemployment exceeded 3 million, a naval task force sailed to war with Argentina, and a year-long strike saw brutal clashes between the police and the miners. It was an era of big personalities and deep divisions, with the likes of Arthur Scargill, Ben Elton and Ted Heath all ranged against the dominating figure of the time: Margaret Thatcher. For if the 1970s were the last gasp of the old Britain, the 1980s were a truly revolutionary decade, during which the government sought to recast the soul of the nation. Rejoice! Rejoice! returns to these troubled years – to the royal weddings and the riots, to Live Aid and the AIDS panic, to Spitting Image and Yes, Minister – to explore a country at war over its own future. ‘Splendid’ Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times

Clive Aslet is editor-atlarge of Country Life and an eminent architectural historian. He lives in London and Ramsgate.

Americans and the British Country House Clive Aslet For centuries Britain’s country houses had been the exclusive preserve of their traditional landed gentry of lords and ladies. But from the late nineteenth century a different kind of proprietor began to take up residence. American money – lots of it – came across the Atlantic in the form of Vanderbilt heiresses and stupendously wealthy industrialists like William Waldorf Astor. Their money purchased grand houses like Cliveden and Leeds Castle and it saved vast piles like Blenheim from dereliction and decay. Clive Aslet’s fabulously illustrated book is the first study of this remarkable and unlikely juxtaposition of two very different cultures, which changed the architecture, the society and the character of our country houses forever.

From the acclaimed author of Britain’s Lost Cricket Grounds and Britain’s Lost Breweries, comes a journey underground to the mines that built the nation and defined a century. Covering the length and breadth of Britain, from the coal mine in Ashington, Northumberland to the salt mines in Devon, Chris Arnot has taken his geordie lamp deep under the landscape to give us a glimpse of a world that has almost completely closed down. Whether it is down the last deep working iron-ore mine in Europe, or touring the gaunt ruins of tin mining in Cornwall, tracing scars left by slate, lead or copper mining, Britain’s Lost Mines tells the story of a vanished industrial heritage and the dying of a community that was the backbone of Great Britain.

Kevin Kilbane is Ireland’s most capped outfield footballer with over 100 appearances for his country, more than 500 matches at for teams including West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, Wigan and Hull, and a folk hero in his home land. Now, his frank and compelling autobiography tells the story of how, from a troubled Lancashire childhood in an Irish immigrant family, football rescued him from skirmishes with the police and a life of petty crime as he built a formidable reputation as an honest, old-fashioned professional footballer. Nowadays, he is an increasingly respected analyst on Radio 5 Live and Match of the Day and, as the parent of a daughter with Down’s Syndrome, is donating all the royalties from this book to the Down’s Syndrome Association.

These days it seems obvious that stupendous constructions like St Pancras Station should be preserved and restored, but as recently as the 1960s it was earmarked for demolition. ‘Victorian’, when it came to architecture, was a term of abuse. Of the 200 notable examples illustrated, from the magnificent Imperial Institute to vast Eaton Hall, not one still exists. A photograph is all we have left. Gavin Stamp turns up lesserknown Victorian buildings like the spaceship-like greenhouse at Chatsworth. This is a memorable journey back into a world we should never have lost. Gavin Stamp’s other books for Aurum are Britain’s Lost Cities and Edwin Lutyens Country Houses. He lives in London. ‘A heartbreaking book’ Simon Jenkins, Sunday Times

Few things exercise the mind of a Telegraph reader more than the misuse and abuse of the English language. Indeed, so ever vigilant for crimes of grammar, spelling and punctuation is this redoubtable breed that it is never off duty, keeping a beady eye peeled for linguistic lapses wherever it travels. Sign Language is the newspaper’s weekly column inviting members of the public to send in their photographs of menus, health and safety warnings, road signs, adverts, headlines and personals columns – anything in which the language has gone egregiously, hilariously and, usually, unintentionally wrong. Now in its third collection, and after sales of 50,000 copies, the latest instalment of Sign Language brings you more of what you love – the most inappropriate, confusing, poorly translated and mind-bogglingly bizarre signs from around the world.

In addition, exclusive posters by acclaimed modern designers accompany all of the unmade movies, each one remaining true to the vision of the original film-maker. Mark Adkin is a former army officer who has published a number of distinguished works on military history including, for Aurum, The Waterloo Companion, The Trafalgar Companion and The Gettysburg Companion. He lives in Bedfordshire.

The Western Front Companion The Complete Guide to the Twentieth Century’s Most Terrible Theatre of War

Mark Adkin The fourth book in Mark Adkin’s bestselling Companion series, published in good time for the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War in 2014, this is the definitive work on the battles of the Western Front. In 300,000 words of text, over a hundred original maps and diagrams and hundreds of stunning and often rarely-seen photographs, Adkin anatomises every aspect of the four years of fighting, from the railway supply lines to the trench formations, the shell trajectories to the ambulance corps, from the organisational hierarchies and command systems of every army to the plethora of memorials, cemeteries and ossuaries that today commemorate this titanic conflict. As with his previous companions, a major feature is the author’s own photographs of the present-day landscapes, today unrecognisable as the blasted wastelands of trench warfare. Every single aspect of these four years of warfare is described and depicted: no student of the First World War can be without it.

The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti Rafael Schacter

Book of the Garden Compiled by Tim Richardson

Since its genesis on the east coast of America in the late 1960s, street art has travelled to nearly every corner of the globe, shifting and morphing into highly complex and ornate new styles. Exhibiting their work within what is effectively the world’s largest, most open gallery urban artists unveil their beliefs and imaginations to a public unable to avoid them, challenging conventional ideas about the place of art in everyday life. From Steve Powers (Espo) in New York to Kid Zoom in Australia, taking in Banksy’s London, Paris as seen by Honet and Ox, and Os Gêmeos in Brazil, The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti is the first truly geographical history of the form. Featuring specially commissioned works and interventions from major graffiti and street art practitioners, it offers an insider’s view of the urban landscapes as they are experienced by the artists themselves and traces the many and myriad ways in which this vibrant artistic and social phenomenon has developed.

The Telegraph has long enjoyed the closest association with gardens and gardening, ever since Vita Sackville-West first began writing a column for the paper between the wars, whilst creating her legendary White Garden at Sissinghurst. Variously a hobby, an art form and even, on occasion, a cause of social unrest, gardening encompasses the annual spectacle of the Chelsea Flower Show, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s sublime perfection of the English landscape, and, in modern times, the ‘guerilla gardeners’ sowing ‘cosmopolitan meadows’ in the bleakest wastes of Britain’s inner cities. Whatever form it takes – Zen minimalism, or a breeding ground for prize-winning marrows – few things could be more central to the world of the Telegraph reader than the garden, which is why the paper has always attracted the best writers on the subject. From the experts of today, such as Helen Yemm, Bunny Guinness and Monty Don, through great designers of yesteryear, like Rosemary Verey and Gertrude Jekyll, to erudite amateurs Germaine Greer and W.F. Deedes, all of them are collected in this compendious and endlessly entertaining anthology, compiled by eminent green-fingered scribe Tim Richardson.

The Lost World of Bletchley Park An Illustrated History of the World War II Codebreaking Centre

Sinclair McKay The huge success of Sinclair McKay’s The Secret Life of Bletchley Park – a quarter of a million copies sold to date – has been symptomatic of a similarly dramatic increase in visitors to Bletchley Park itself, the Victorian mansion in Buckinghamshire now open as an engrossing museum of wartime codebreaking. Now Aurum is publishing the first comprehensive illustrated history of this remarkable place, from its prewar heyday as a country estate under the Liberal MP Sir Herbert Leon, through its wartime requisition with the addition of the famous huts within the grounds, to become the place where modern computing was invented and the German Enigma code was cracked, and finally its post-war dereliction and then rescue towards the end of the twentieth century as a museum whose visitor numbers have more than doubled in the last five years. Featuring over 200 photographs, some previously unseen, and text by Sinclair McKay, this will be an essential purchase for everyone interested in the place where codebreaking helped to win the war.

Clothes for Heroes The Punk Fashions of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren

PunkPistol, Introduction by Jon Savage From a boutique on London’s King’s Road in the 1970s, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood started a fashion revolution. The clothes they created during their shop’s various guises as Let It Rock, Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, SEX and Seditionaries provided not only the wardrobe for the Sex Pistols, but also a confron-tational, taboo-busting aesthetic which continues to inspire today. An act of gleeful creative destruction, their work appeared to have no precedent, producing clothes to get you noticed and – on occasion – arrested. Today these designs are collectors’ items, sold for high prices in auction houses and hungrily sought out by investors and museums. In Clothes for Heroes PunkPistol combines stunning original photography of the world’s largest and most significant collection of SEX and Seditionaries clothing, rare and unseen images from 430 King’s Road and the 1970s punk scene, and essays and interviews from aficionados and experts, to create the ultimate visual history of one of the key partnerships in contemporary popular culture.

Extraordinary Gentleman

The Real McCaw

The Strange Worlds of Alan Moore

The Autobiography

Lance Parkin

Richie McCaw

For three decades comics fans and creators have looked to Alan Moore to map out the state of the art of the medium. In works such as Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell he has reached a mainstream audience far removed from his cult origins, and such is his standing in popular culture that some of the biggest names in Hollywood vie to adapt his books for cinema. Yet his career is a perfect illustration of grand imagination smashing headlong into corporate mediocrity. A principled eccentric, rooted in a very English counter-culture, to this very day he lives in the town of his birth – Northampton – professing greater interest in performance art, magic and erotica than he does a business he regards as exploitative and derivative. Moreover, his journey from the punky art labs of the 1970s to the bestseller lists has seen him embroiled in fierce feuds with some of the entertainment industry’s biggest companies. Now, in anticipation of his 60th birthday, Moore aficionado Lance Parkin goes in search of this extraordinary gentleman, and reveals a writer quite unlike any other working today.

Richie McCaw, Rugby World Cup Winning captain and the All Black’s most capped player of all time, is arguably the most talented rugby player of all time. In his bestselling autobiography, McCaw talks with brutal honesty about the family life that defined his character and how it gave him the strength to emerge from the lowest moment in his career to lifting the Webb Ellis Cup, and becoming the most successful captain world rugby has ever seen. As he prepares to become the first captain to successfully defend the World Cup, McCaw has set the standard of what a professional rugby player should be. Hugely popular and respected, his story is not just a brutal account of life on the front line, but an exhilarating portrait of modern rugby.

Am I Missing Something…?

Meeting Under the Euston Arch

Unpublished Letters from

England in Architecture and Design

Edited by Iain Hollingshead

Gavin Stamp

Every year, the collection of the best letters that didn’t quite make it into the Telegraph – because just too left-field, outrageous or hilarious for an august Letters page – offers an alternative review of the year. For this fifth volume the potential agenda is just as enticing as ever, with Telegraph readers variously waggish, whimsical or just plain steamed-up about Chris Huhne’s speeding points, a new Pope, the Royal baby and mansion taxes. Once again, it will be one of the humour bestsellers of the year.

For some years Gavin Stamp, one of our most eminent and readable architectural historians, has written a monthly column for Apollo, the pre-eminent architecture and fine art magazine. The subject is simply whatever in architecture or design happens to take his fancy – it might be the splendid reopening of the magnificent Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras, the dilapidation of a little-known church in Eastbourne, or the demise of the Routemaster bus. But while these pieces display a wonderful range and variety, they are unified by Stamp’s wider quest: to explore, and define, the Englishness of English architecture and design – to celebrate when fine examples are preserved and restored, to deplore when they fall victim to philistine neglect or, worse, demolition. Together, this compulsively readable collection builds into an eloquent, learned, and often indignant portrait of our national design heritage.

UNION BOOKS

Marcello Di Cintio is a Canadian writer who has lived in West Africa, North Africa, India and the Middle East. He is the author of two award-winning books: Harmattan: Wind Across West Africa and Poets and Pahlevans: A Journey Into the Heart of Iran.

Walls Travels Along the Barricades

Marcello Di Cintio The world’s walls are supposed to be coming down. We speak of globalisation, international markets and global villages, and it is now possible to communicate instantly from nearly anywhere in the world. But just as these virtual walls come down, real walls rise. In this evocative blend of travel writing, history and politics, Marcello Di Cintio visits the world’s most disputed edges to meet those who live alongside the razor wire, concrete and steel. Along the way he shares tea with refugees on the wrong side of Morocco’s desert wall; encounters illegal immigrants circumventing high-tech fencing around the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla; walks Arizona’s migrant trails, visits fenced-in villages in India, and stands with those who protest against Israel’s security barrier to understand what these structures say about those who build them, and how they influence the cultures they pen in. Venturing beyond politics, Di Cintio encounters the infiltrators who circumvent the walls, the artists who transform them, and the forgotten people who live in their shadow.

Human civilization has always been preoccupied with erecting walls. In the first century CE, the Roman emperor Hadrian built a 120-kilometre limestone wall across Roman Britain; in the 1800s, the Danish repurposed an ancient Viking Age wall as a military fortification in their war with the Prussians. In the 1870s, Argentina built a line of trenches and watchtowers to protect Buenos Aires province from invasion by the indigenous Mapuche; at the beginning of World War II, France constructed a concrete barrier along its border with Germany to defend against a Nazi attack: the Maginot Line. Walls don’t just divide us. They can make us ill. In 1973, East German psychiatrist Dietfried Müller-Hegemann observed that the Berlin Wall caused psychosis, schizophrenia, and phobias in the East Germans who lived in its shadow. Yet the psychic pain inflicted by the Berlin Wall, and the humiliating failure of the Maginot Line years earlier, hardly dissuaded the world’s wall builders. South Africa built a 120-kilometre electric fence, dubbed the Snake of Fire, along its border with Mozambique in 1975. The United States turned Baghdad into a labyrinth of vertical concrete, and is currently building a wall along the Mexican frontier. India built fences along its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and through the disputed region of Kashmir. In addition to the barrier around the West Bank, Israel has nearly completed another wall along its Egyptian frontier to keep out potential terrorists and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. As news of these physical walls spread, they felt like a throwback to antiquity. Walls are supposed to be coming down. Our contemporary angels and demons — multinational corporations, climate change, Hollywood movies, bird flu, Katy Perry — are nationless and borderless, and care nothing about the lines we draw on our maps and fortify with steel. And yet the walls continue to rise, parcelling the world into smaller, easily defensible cells that separate us from each other. I understood why a nation might choose to erect a wall. I wondered, though, about the individual souls who were forced into a strange intimacy with one. I wanted to discover what sort of societies created the walls and, more than this, I wanted to know what societies the walls themselves created. I suspected I would learn little from reading political pronouncements or staring at lines on a map, and so, in February 2008, because it seemed as good a place to start as any, I flew into the Sahara Desert.

Amit Chaudhuri

Calcutta is an exceptionally written and witty personal history of one of the most enigmatic – but greatest – cities of our time. In 1999, Amit Chaudhuri moved from England back to Calcutta. It was a place he had loved in his youth and the place he had made his name writing about. But upon his return he discovered that the Calcutta of his imagination had receded. At once an insider, yet also a kind of tourist, Chaudhuri’s experience of re-settling in a place so changed by revolution, capitalism and the inevitable spread of American culture is incredibly funny and moving and brings a multifarious universe to life.

Acclaimed novelist and author of Calcutta: Two Years in the City, Amit Chaudhuri, is also one of the most gifted essayists and critics writing today, whose work has appeared in the pages of many of the most prestigious newspapers and journals in the world, including the London Review of Books, The Times, Literary Supplement, Granta, the Guardian and the Dublin Review. Collected here for the first time, Telling Tales is a selection of Chaudhuri’s most enduring short non-fiction that showcases his sense of humour, his idiosyncratic capacity to transform the mundane, his political engagement, and his mastery of words, spanning a career of over twenty years. From playing ‘Cowboys and Indians’ as a child in India to an outsider’s perspective on the British class system to a plane that was hijacked by Pakistani men and taken to Afghanistan at the turn of the millennium to the works of V. S Naipaul, these essays display Chaudhuri’s ability to find meaning in every aspect of the physical and intellectual world and will consolidate his reputation as one of most original and elegant writers publishing in English today.

‘Chaudhuri’s trysts with the past are entrancing in their lyricism, and simply stunning in their intelligence and percipience’ Independent

Francine Prose

A prize-winning memoir from one of contemporary writing’s most highly acclaimed travel writers and cultural commentators. How to Disappear is a series of five brilliantly written and irrepressibly quirky travelogues that takes the reader on a tour of an out-of-season Gozo, a becalmed Indian hill-town, a remote Scottish island and a Welsh fishing village (in which the author tracks down the model for Sebastian Flyte, the aristocratic anti-hero of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited). The final, much-praised, essay meanders much closer to home: the flower-strewn grounds of Kensington Palace in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death. Written with a fierce intelligence and charmingly off beat humour, this is one of the most unusual ‘autobiographies’ – not to mention collection of travellers’ tales – you’ll read.

In this spirited (and provocative) exposé of nine women who fired the imaginations of some of the most inimitable artists and thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, critically acclaimed novelist and critic Francine Prose draws on photographs, diaries, correspondence and original works of art that reveal the complexity of these artist-muse relationships and illustrate the muse in all her guises: as inspiration, angel, equal partner and, sometimes, monster. The nine muses featured are: Hester Thrale (Samuel Johnson), Alice Liddell (Lewis Carroll), Elizabeth Siddal (Dante Gabriel Rossetti). Lou Andreas-Salomé (Nietzsche, Rilke and Freud), Gala Dalí (Salvador Dalí), Lee Miller (Man Ray), Charis Weston (Edward Weston), Suzanne Farrell (George Balanchine) and Yoko Ono (John Lennon).

Jumbo The Unauthorised Biography of a Victorian Sensation

In 1883, in the great Victorian urban boom, the town of Colchester erected its huge four-legged water tower at the crest of one of the two large hills on which the town’s centre rests. It is (and was) the second largest water tower in Britain. A few months earlier, the world’s most famous elephant had, amid countrywide protest, been transported in a large iron box from the London Zoo to New York. Though the animal had never actually come to Colchester, thousands of the town’s children had (delirious with excitement) ridden on Jumbo’s back at the Regent’s Park Zoo and so Colchester’s water tower was duly named (what else?) ‘Jumbo’. Colchester was where, as Philip Larkin wryly puts it, my childhood was ‘unspent’. Not a day went past but I did not look fondly up at Jumbo, on my walk to school, drinking for years from its subterranean metallic trunkery. It was absurd but magnificent and we were proud to call it Jumbo. It was the visible sign of the inner ‘bigness’ of Colchester. There have been many famous elephants, of course, but none is so famous as the flap-eared African pachyderm, Jumbo. His short life (a mere twenty-four years) has been widely and lovingly chronicled from his unhappy babyhood as an orphan in what is now Eritrea to his triumphant career as Barnum and Bailey’s ‘Greatest Show on Earth’, and his footprint remains with in everything, from the thundering Jumbo Jet to the multi-stacked jumbo-burger and even the loved – and despised – Disney creation Dumbo, proving that Jumbo – who died beneath the wheels of a train (symbolic, or what?) – lives on.

John Sutherland Jumbo, Victorian England’s favourite elephant, was born in 1861 in French Sudan. He was imported to a Parisian zoo and later sold on to London. Worldwide fame came when the American showman and scam artist P.T. Barnum brought him in 1881 (despite letters from 100,000 British schoolchildren who wrote to Queen Victoria begging her to prevent the sale). Barnum went on to transform Jumbo into a lucrative circus act and one of the most loved animals of all time. Using the heart-wrenching story of Jumbo’s celebrity life, tragic death in Canada in 1885, and his enduring cultural legacy, Jumbo is a personal and fascinatingly wide reflection on our cultural elephantiasis by our most distinguished literary-critical detective which is guaranteed to amuse, stimulate and provoke.

The Saturday Book: Volume 1 A Cabinet of Curiosities

Alex Clark The Saturday Book was a hugely popular literary miscellany published annually between 1941 and 1975. Edited first by Leonard Russell and then John Hadfield, both eminent literary journalists, this spirited anthology vowed to do without a mission; its motto was ‘Vive la bagatelle’. Union Books are relaunching The Saturday Book for the 21st century and presenting a distinctive confection of new writing. The beautifully illustrated collection will include memoirs and travelogues, short stories, interviews, satirical asides and humorous wanderings. This first volume will also feature The Little Review Centenary Questionnaire. 100 years ago, an avant-garde arts magazine sent ten identical questions to fifty writers, artists and musicians, including TS Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein and Jean Cocteau. Their replies formed the basis of The Little Review’s last ever issue. To commemorate its centenary and celebrate The Saturday Book’s first ever issue, Union Books are repeating the exercise. A piece about The Little Review by Naomi Wood will introduce the feature and the Q&As will run throughout the book.

How to Grow Microgreens

Quick, Easy Ways to Grow and Eat Nature’s Tasty Superfoods

Matthew Byrne

Fionna Hill

The Churches Conservation Trust is the principal organization in England caring for those churches which are no longer required for regular worship by the Church of England, but which nonetheless are a priceless part of the nation’s history, ranging in date from Saxon to late Victorian. The typical Trust church is in a small village or stands quite alone in some remote and beautiful location. Because of this the churches were largely untouched by the restorers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and retain wonderfully atmospheric interiors. This book features photographic portraits and descriptions of thirty-six of the Trust’s most spectacular and interesting churches from every period in all parts of England.

Microgreens, the tiny seedlings of herbs and vegetables, are today’s hottest gourmet garnish, offering a multitude of colours, textures and distinct flavours, ranging from mild and subtle to spicy, hot or nutty. Larger than sprouts and smaller than ‘baby’ salad greens, microgreens are fantastic for those with limited garden space, as they are great to grow in containers on a terrace or windowsill. As a bonus, microgreens pack a powerful nutritional punch, containing higher levels of active plant compounds than mature plants or seeds. How to Grow Microgreens provides detailed information for 25 popular vegetables and herbs, along with recipes and ideas on how to use them. There are also chapters on troubleshooting and the nutritional value of microgreens.

The evolution of these portraits begins with a unique and intimate relationship. Looking at each work and considering its individual history can tell us much about this relationship, about the artist and the time and place in which it was created. The portraits are shown chronologically, and the changing nature of the subject can be seen as time rolls forward. From Holbein, Rubens and Rembrandt to Gauguin, Chagall and Picasso, over forty portraits make up this collection of artists’ children. A fascinating combination of biographical anecdote and art history, it is also a celebration of the bond between parent and child.

Dear Friend and Gardener Letters on Life and Gardening

FRANCES LINCOLN

48 NEW TITLES

In this engaging exchange of letters in the last decade of the 20th century, Christopher Lloyd and Beth Chatto, two long established friends and gardeners, compare notes on successes and failures in their two different gardens, share gossip and discuss life. Beth Chatto started her garden in 1960, tackling the dry, flat, exposed landscape of East Anglia. It is now a place of pilgrimage for plant-lovers and a story of triumph. Refusing to rest on his laurels, Christopher Lloyd (1921-2006) delighted and surprised visitors to Great Dixter in Sussex, with successful experiments such as transforming the old rose garden into a hotbed of tender perennials. The authors’ expert eyes and minds on matters horticultural, as well as their closely observed details – of the night sky, birdlife and personal adventures – give these inspirational letters a life of their own and carry the reader through. First published in 1998, this new illustrated edition is introduced by Great Dixter’s head gardener, Fergus Garrett.

Beth Chatto & Christopher Lloyd The Gardens of Venice and the Veneto draws together an amazing variety of spellbinding garden retreats, from monastery gardens quietly cultivated in the islands of the lagoon to magnificent villas on the Brenta Canal, and baroque masterpieces in the hills beyond. Highlights include an eerie Masonic garden complete with gothic chapel and cavernous grottoes, a pleasure garden made for his workers by a benevolent nineteenth-century industrialist, and a flower-filled delight by the banks of the Grand Canal. This is a book of ravishing images and intriguing stories. The garden behind Henry James’s Aspern Papers is here, along with the garden which so beguiled Margaret Symonds, the young English author of Days Spent on a Doge’s Farm. With an emphasis on gardens that can be visited, longtime resident Jenny Condie elucidates the dynastic triumphs, the reversals of fortune, and the shifts in taste and influence which have shaped these extraordinary places.

In this book, pioneering garden designers Piet Oudolf and Henk Gerritsen describe their ideal perennials, bulbs, grasses, ferns and small shrubs. An ideal plant is one that is both beautiful and robust, performing reliably with very little input from the gardener. Oudolf and Gerritsen have a genuinely innovative approach to gardening. Rather than striving for big, bold masses of colourful blooms that are vigorously pruned back as soon as they have finished flowering, the authors choose plants chiefly for their form – leaves, flowerheads and stems included – which means they retain their natural beauty through all the seasons. Pied Oudolf is one of the most exciting designers of the 21st century. He has designed gardens from RHS Wisley in Surrey to ‘Ground Zero’ on Manhattan Island in New York. Henk Gerritsen (1948–2008) was born in Utrecht in the Netherlands. He trained as an artist and made his living as a painter before turning to garden design.

An Intoxicated Octopus Leaving the Café Royal we linked arms and charged up the narrow staircase leading to the Arts Theatre Club. We were instantly spotted by reception and it was a right turn, down the stairs, and out into St. Martin’s Lane in five minutes flat. It seems that it is not, ‘Ah, here comes Dylan*, that promising young poet!’ but ‘Watch out, here comes that crashing old bore Dylan, let’s get him out of here quick’. Just then the air-raid siren went off. We hailed a taxi and persuaded the driver to take us to Ruthven’s studio. As soon as I’d sunk into my seat Dylan smothered me in wet beery kisses, his blubbery tongue forcing my lips apart. It was rather like being embraced by an intoxicated octopus. I tried to tell myself that I was being kissed by a great poet but it was a relief when the taxi finally stopped. Joan Wyndham, Love Is Blue, 1943 *The Dylan in question is, of course, Dylan Thomas.

5th July: A Child’s View of Town We first went to see the new London Bridge. This bridge is very beautiful, but not yet completed; it is of white stone, and consists of very wide semi-circular arches, thrown across the Thames just above the old bridge, which is a heavy, ugly fabric. We were likewise much pleased with the Thames itself, which is filled with vessels of all kinds. The Monument is very near; it looks immensely tall, but we did not ascend it. I have read of a man getting over the rails at the top, and throwing himself over; he was dashed to pieces. I believe he was insane. I do not much like the Urn at the top of the Monument; it is very ugly. We next went to see St. Paul’s Cathedral, which I admire extremely. The exterior is too immense for me to see correctly enough to describe, but when we entered it, it was most beautiful. The pavement is black and white marble, as well as the whole interior… The Dome is immense. Papa took Richard and me up to the Whispering Gallery, which extends round it, and looks down into the church. Everybody in the church looked like dolls or monkeys from it, it was so high up. While there are plenty of books describing her periods of urban life in Bath, Southampton and London, no consideration has been given to this rural background to her life. This book fills a gap in the Austen family background, discussing the general state of agriculture during the period as well as the Austens’ household economy and rural way of life. All appear in Austen’s letters, and appear in her novels, lending that air of verisimilitude for which her works are famous. The book also draws on previously unpublished family manuscripts, which provide a unique insight. Richly illustrated with contemporary depictions of country folk, landscapes and animals, Jane Austen’s Country Life conjures up a world which has vanished more thoroughly than the familiar Regency townscapes, but which is no less important to an understanding of this most treasured writer’s life and work.

Farewell to Trains David St John Thomas

London Villages Zena Alkayat

Often cited as Britain’s bestselling railway author, in Farewell to Trains David St John Thomas summarizes his lifetime’s passion. Personal reminiscences and evocative descriptions of railway life are interspersed with extracts from over 65 years of the author’s railway writings, and illustrated throughout with archive photography. In this poignant, nostalgic book, the author says farewell to the restaurant cars, the sleeping carriages, the non-stop expresses and the cheap excursion trains, the local bustling stations, the semaphore and signal boxes, and of course the great steam engines.

There are dozens of ‘villages’ tucked away in London, from Barnes to Bermondsey, Colombia Road to Clarendon Cross. These small, locally-known enclaves give the capital its inimitable character. Featuring thirty of the most unique and vibrant neighbourhoods, London Villages is the key to exploring the city in a new way. Along with specially commissioned photographs and an illustrated map for each village, a short text sums up its spirit, history and location, before expertly highlighting the best independent shops, markets, cafés and public spaces to visit.

David St John Thomas is the author of a bestselling series of books chronicling the four big railway companies, and is the founder of the publishing house David & Charles. His other titles for Frances Lincoln include Remote Britain, Journey Through Britain and Railway Season.

FRANCES LINCOLN

Cats are the most enigmatic and alluring of domestic animals. Beguiling beauty, fierce independence and aloof intelligence characterize their long and exotic history. The Grace of the Cat is a celebration of this captivating animal and a moving account of the feline’s journey from the wild to a comfortable domestic existence. In this beautifully illustrated book, Tamsin Pickeral traces the colourful and tumultuous history of the cat, from its glory days in Egypt to its transport on creaking ships to America. She explores the diverse role of the cat in each culture, culminating in the origins of cat shows, and the selective breeding of pure bred, pedigree animals. Inside this richly illustrated book you will discover the stories behind more than fifty breeds of cat, from the lithe-bodied Abyssinian to the intelligent Russian Blue. The evocative and informative text is accompanied by stunning photographs of every featured breed by award-winning photographer Astrid Harrisson. The Grace of the Cat is an essential volume for everyone who loves cats.

For 300 years, from the ninth to the eleventh centuries, the power of the Vikings dominated Western Europe. As well as being warriors and accomplished seamen, they were jewellers, sculptors and poets of great skill and originality: the forts, town sites, ships, burial mounds, carved stones, place names, sagas, art and artefacts they left behind substantiate their legendary exploits. Publishing ahead of a major new exhibition at the British Museum, this is a revised and updated edition of James Graham-Campbell’s authoritative account of the Viking world, based on recent archaeological research, with an important chapter on ships, shipwrights and seamen from Sean McGrail. The text is complemented by a wealth of illustration, including maps and reconstruction drawings. Photographs, many of them especially commissioned, portray the brilliant products of the Vikings’ culture and the beauty and harshness of the natural world they faced.

Monk’s House in Sussex is the former home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. It was bought by them in 1919 as a country retreat, somewhere they came to read, write and work in the garden. Virginia wrote most of her major novels there. As the success of her writing afforded improvements, the Woolfs spent increasing amounts of time in Rodmell, and in 1939 they decided to make it their main home. A chronological account takes the reader through the key events in the lives of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, and their deaths. This is allied to an account of the garden and its development, and the creation and development of the key areas of the garden. A wonderful selection of full-colour contemporary photographs, archive photographs, illustrated maps and planting plans take the reader through the various garden ‘rooms’, including the Italian Garden, the Orchard, the Walled Garden, the Fishpond Garden and the Greenhouses and Conservatories. Throughout there are quotations from Virginia and Leonard’s diaries, giving a vivid account of their plans for, views on and activities in the garden.

They include cabins made from wood, metal and stone or carved from the landscape itself, to treehouses perched in leafy heights. Illustrated with images of Paula Pryke’s stunning floral creations, this notebook will be invaluable for the bride in the run up to the wedding, and a beautiful keepsake afterwards. Paula offers advice on all the different aspects of wedding planning gleaned from her years of experience, and includes hints and tips from wedding planners she has worked with. Space is included throughout for the bride to make her own notes and keep her own records. In a resources section at the back of the book Paula recommends her selection of her favourite wedding professionals, including planners and cake makers.

The Cake Lover’s Recipe Notebook is a must-have for anyone who loves cake – and who doesn’t? The current passion for baking shows no signs of waning and this gorgeous-looking notebook is the ideal place to keep all your favourite recipes, whether passed down through generations or from friend to friend, or copied down from a magazine. The practical wiro-bound notebook is separated into eight sections, with convenient tabs for easy navigation. It begins with a really useful section on basic ingredients and essential equipment and techniques, which describes in simple terms the difference between soft brown and Demerara sugar, beating and folding in, baking sheets and sandwich tins. Die-hard bakers will use this as a handy checklist, while those who are better versed in eating cake than baking it will find the straightforward advice invaluable. Each section offers two mouth-watering recipes to get you started, then follows a series of prettily patterned blank pages for you to write out your own recipes, notes, ideas and experiments.

In their groundbreaking book, The Great Cholesterol Myth, Jonny Bowden and Dr. Stephen Sinatra debunked this assertion, arguing that that fat is not the enemy (it may in fact be part of the solution), and that grains and carbohydrates in traditional ‘low cholesterol’ diets may exacerbate the problem. Tattoos have long been an integral part of motorcycle culture, the result of the overwhelming number of ex-military men who formed the nucleus of the postwar outlaw motorcycle-club scene. These soldiers, sailors, and marines returned from war with statements etched in ink upon their bodies, and they continued that tradition when they formed the clubs that came to define motorcycle culture. In 1000 Biker Tattoos, motorcycle photographer Sara Liberte celebrates this most personal of art forms by capturing the wild abandon of the motorcycle lifestyle as expressed through tattoo work. Featuring 1,000 photos of biker tattoos and the artwork used to create them, along with profiles of renowned tattoo artists in the biker community, this book provides a revealing look into this colourful aspect of motorcycle culture.

Mustang: Fifty Years Donald Farr

Porsche 911: 50 Years Randy Leffingwell

In the early 1960s, Lee Iacocca – then director of the Ford division at Ford Motor Company – convinced Henry Ford II to produce a sporty four-seat car aimed at the emerging youth market. That car, essentially a reconfigured and re-skinned Falcon economy car, became the Ford Mustang, and it changed the automotive world like no other car before or since. In Mustang: Fifty Years, acclaimed Mustang writer Donald Farr celebrates this unbroken lineage of muscle: its phenomenal first-year sales, the new ‘pony car’ genre it pioneered, and subsequent models that include the Mustang GT, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT500, Super Cobra Jet, Boss 302 and Boss 429 – all part of a line of American performance cars that continues on to this day. With 400 photos of the USA’s iconic sports car and released in tandem with the Mustang’s 50th anniversary, Mustang: Fifty Years is a must on the bookshelf of any gearhead or Ford aficionado.

In Porsche 911: 50 Years, Randy Leffingwell celebrates half a century of one of the world’s top sports cars, telling a comprehensive story of its design and development, racing and competition, engineering and technology, style and culture. All the iconic 911 models are included: from the original 901 prototype through every classic model, including the liquid-cooled cars that brought the 911 into a new millennium. But beyond telling the story of the cars, this book places the spotlight on the people behind the 911: Ferdinand ‘Butzi’ Porsche, the son of legendary Porsche founder Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche, who co-designed the instantly recognizable 911 shape; Peter W. Schutz, the Porsche CEO who saved the 911 from extinction; and Dr. Helmuth Bott, the engineering genius behind many of the groundbreaking technologies that have defined the 911. Leffingwell also tells the story of the 911 community – the clubs and culture that surround the car. Together, these facets make Porsche 911: 50 Years the essential book in any Porsche fan’s library.

When Pulp Fiction was released in cinemas in 1994, it was immediately hailed as a masterpiece. The New York Times called it a ‘triumphant, cleverly disorienting journey’, and thirty-one-year-old Quentin Tarantino was touted as the next great American director. Nearly twenty years later, those who proclaimed Pulp Fiction an instant classic have been proven irrefutably right. In Pulp Fiction: The Complete Story of Quentin Tarantino’s Masterpiece, film expert Jason Bailey explores why Pulp Fiction is such a brilliant and influential film. He discusses how the movie was revolutionary in its use of dialogue, time structure, and cinematography – and how it completely transformed the industry and artistry of independent cinema. He examines Tarantino’s influences, illuminates the film’s pop culture references, and describes its legacy. Much like the contents of Marcellus Wallace’s briefcase, Pulp Fiction is mysterious and spectacular. This book explains why. Illustrated throughout with original art inspired by the film, with sidebars and special features on everything from casting close calls to deleted scenes, this is the most comprehensive, in-depth book on Pulp Fiction ever published.

October 9780760344897 Hardback £25.00 64 pp 222x286 mm

It’s been more than half a century since Route 66 functioned as a major cross-country thoroughfare, but following its displacement by the U.S. Interstate system in the 1950s, advertising ephemera used to promote Route 66 motels, diners, souvenir shops, and the road itself became highly sought-after collectibles. In Route 66 Treasures, author Jim Hinckley’s unique new look at the road examines it through the lens of those promotional and advertising efforts, going so far as to include 15 pieces of removable facsimile memorabilia – including diner menus, cocktail napkins, paper coasters, window decals, postcards, brochures, and more – each enclosed in its own vellum envelope. Hinckley’s chronological history provides a richly illustrated and thoughtful review of Route 66 promotion through the decades in each of the eight states through which it travels.

The history of railroading in North America is as much a story of boardroom intrigue as it is a story of the brute force that stamped thousands of miles of train track across a rugged continent. Today’s nine U.S. and Canadian Class I railroads are the result of well over a century of convoluted bankruptcies, mergers, acquisitions, and expansions. North American Railroad Family Trees marks the first time this major aspect of railroad history has been presented in a clear, graphic format. In these pages, renowned rail author Brian Solomon takes a visual and chronological approach, presenting 50 ‘family trees’ describing the development of the railways from the 1890s to the present day, alongside maps, rare photography and period advertising to lend historical context.

In this book, the first complete illustrated treatment of the band, acclaimed heavy metal journalist Martin Popoff leads a roster of respected heavy metal writers to take on Metallica’s entire history, analysing each of the group’s ten studio albums (including 2011’s LuLu collaboration with Lou Reed) and providing a complete discography. More than 300 images complement extensive stories of the band: their formative years spent in the clubs of Los Angeles, tragedies like the death of founding bassist Cliff Burton, the triumphs of multiple platinum recordings, personnel changes like the departures of Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted, and tours covering the world over. Live-performance and candid off-stage photographs are accompanied by a stunning selection of memorabilia, including gig posters, concert tees, picture sleeves, backstage passes, badges, ticket stubs, and more. Following the same critically acclaimed, high-quality format as Voyageur Press’ previous books on Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Queen, Iron Maiden, and others, this is the authoritative tribute to one of history’s most successful and admired heavy metal bands.

Nirvana formed in 1987, released their first LP in 1989, and unintentionally tore the music world asunder two years later with the video and single for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Nirvana, with their charity-shop clothes and pawnshop guitars, represented a much-needed return to punk-inspired rock in the face of a musical landscape dominated by vapid hair metal acts. A meteoric rise followed, attended by all of the predictable professional and personal pitfalls. Two and half years after the release of ‘Teen Spirit’, leader Kurt Cobain, age 27, killed himself and the ride was over. Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of their final LP, Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History is the first to treat fans to a stylishly designed illustrated biography of the band. Over 300 images including performance and off-stage photography and memorabilia complement a narrative detailing the band’s tumultuous history, as well as sidebar album reviews, gear breakdowns, and mini synopses of Cobain’s 50 all-time favourite albums. Here, finally, is the book that breaks that history down and presents it from an objective perspective.

How to Set Up, Fix and Maintain Your Guitar for Top Playing Condition

The Replacements were the darlings of 1980s rock critics and, by all accounts, would have been much more commercially successful if not for their penchant for self-sabotage. In addition to rare photography of the band at their self-deprecating, adolescent, booze-fuelled best, this book features the classic images of the band, as well as a selection of memorabilia gathered from collectors around the USA, and essays on the band’s development and demise.

Fighting Hitler’s Jets is the personal story of the American fighter pilots who defeated the German Luftwaffe in the spring and summer of 1944, only to find themselves up against Adolf Hitler’s Wunderwaffen, or ‘wonder weapons’. Had it not been for these pilots and their extraordinary aircraft, the air campaign over Europe would not have been able to proceed and the Allies might not have been able to mount the D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Written by Robert F. In this intoxicating tale of love and madness, mothers and daughters, folkloric wisdom and the grim legacy of slavery on the French Antillean island of Guadeloupe, aged yet unbowed Telumee tells her life story, along with that of the proud line of Lougandor women she continues to draw strength from, even in their physical absence. Having obtained, with dizzying speed, love and happiness and the trust of others, Telumee must find the resources, personal and collective, both to rejoice without reserve and then, in less fortunate seasons, to survive suffering that would crush weaker vessels. A masterpiece of Caribbean literature, The Bridge of Beyond represents at once a gorgeously thick description of the flora and climate, crafts and customs of the island, and the triumph of a spirit so generous and hopeful that no earthly adversity could outlast it.

It is a sunny summer Sunday in a remote Swiss village, and a christening is being celebrated at a lovely old farmhouse. One of the guests notes an anomaly in the fabric of the venerable edifice: a blackened post that has been carefully built into a trim new window frame. Thereby hangs a tale, one that takes one chilling turn after another. Featuring a cruelly overbearing lord of the manor and the oppressed villagers who must render him service, an irreverent young woman who will stop at nothing, a mysterious stranger with a red beard and a green hat, and the black spider, the tale is as riveting and appalling today as when Jeremias Gotthelf set it down more than a hundred years ago.

Fighting for Life S. Josephine Baker & Helen Epstein

Autobiography of a Corpse Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky & Joanne Turnbull

New York’s lower east side was said to be the most densely populated square mile on the face of the earth in the 1890s. City health inspectors called the neighbourhood ‘the suicide ward’ and referred to one particular tenement – in an official Health Department report, no less – as an ‘out and out hog pen’. Diarrhea epidemics raged each summer, killing thousands of city children. Sweatshop babies with smallpox and typhus dozed in garment heaps destined for fashionable Broadway shops. By 1911, the child death rate had fallen sharply and the New York Times hailed the city as the healthiest on earth. In this witty and highly personal autobiography, public health crusader Dr. Sara Josephine Baker explains how this remarkable transformation was achieved.

Virtually unpublished during his lifetime, Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky’s fantastic and blackly comic philosophical fables have since 1989 earned him a reputation as one of the greatest Russian writers of the twentieth century. Included in this collection of eleven newly translated tales are some of his strangest and most brilliant conceits: a provincial journalist who moves to Moscow finds his existence consumed by the autobiography of his room’s previous occupant, a suicide who vacated his hundred square feet in exchange for his successor’s consideration of his manuscript; the fingers of a celebrated pianist’s right hand run away to spend an abrasive night alone on the city streets. The unlikely stories in Autobiography of a Corpse ask you to take a second look at the cracks in everyday reality.

A Schoolboy’s Diary and Other Stories Robert Walser & Damion Searls

1941: The Year That Keeps Returning Slavko Goldstein, Michael Gable & Nikola Djuretic

A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising is both a work of memory and a work about memory. Miron Białoszewski, the great avant-garde Polish poet, memorializes the doomed uprising of the Polish population against their Nazi masters, which began on August 1, 1944, and was eventually abandoned on October 2, 1944, with the physical destruction of Warsaw. Białoszewski concentrates on recalling the things he saw, felt, smelled, and heard. Each object is precious. Each possesses its own integrity, which the violence of the Nazis will destroy. Białoszewski rescues memory from history and reaffirms the life-giving power of the imagination, which all the force of the inhuman Nazi machine could not – and cannot – obliterate.

1941: The Year That Keeps Returning is Goldstein’s astonishing historical memoir of that fateful year – when the Ustasha, the pro-fascist nationalists, were brought to power in Croatia by the Nazi occupiers of Yugoslavia. April 10, when the German troops marched into Zagreb, the Croatian capital, they were greeted as liberators by the Croats. Three days later Goldstein’s father, the proprietor of a leftist bookstore in Karlovac, was arrested along with other local Serbs, communists, and Yugoslav sympathizers. Goldstein was only thirteen years old, and he would never see his father again. More than fifty years later, Goldstein seeks to piece together the facts of his father’s last days. The moving narrative threads stories of family, friends, and other ordinary people who lived through those dark times together with personal memories and an impressive depth of carefully researched historic details.

The Third Reich was the twentieth century’s most popular tyranny. After Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, most of Germany’s civil servants and professional elite collaborated with the Nazis or else tried to remain ‘unpolitical’, to retreat into ‘inner emigration’. Those who resisted were intimidated and silenced, often through terror and murder. To oppose the regime was rare and dangerous; to do so to protect the sanctity of law and faith was rarer still. But nonetheless some did. Claus von Stauffenberg, who was at the center of the conspiracy that attempted to kill Hitler on July 20, 1944, is only the best-known member of the German resistance. No Ordinary Men is the story of two of the Nazi regime’s most courageous and admirable opponents: the pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his close friend and brother-in-law Hans von Dohnanyi.

Pierre Reverdy, who was close to Picasso and Braque, is one the greatest of modern French poets and one of the most elusive. His work is at once impersonal and intimate, crystalline and opaque, simplicity itself and mysterious as can be. The strength of this new selection of Reverdy’s poetry, which includes both translations that have been specially commissioned for this volume along with a range of outstanding earlier ones, is not only to provide a sampling of Reverdy’s finest work in all its variety but also to document the appeal it has had for so many of America’s best writers and translators.

Roger Casement Angus Mitchell

The 1970s

A fascinating examination of the extraordinary life of Roger Casement, executed as part of the 1916 rising, fighting the empire that had previously knighted him. Roger Casement was a British consul for two decades. However, his investigation into atrocities in the Congo led Casement to anti-Imperialist views. Ultimately, this led him to side with the Irish Republican movement, leading up to the 1916 rising. Arrested by the British for gun trafficking, he was incarcerated in the Tower of London and hanged in Pentonville prison on the 3 August – two years to the day after Britain’s declaration of war in 1914.

Ireland’s premier photographers, The Lensmen, captured the essence of life in Ireland during the 1970s in their stunning and thought provoking images. This collection offers a fascinating insight into the cultural and political events of the decade. Showcasing an era of change in Ireland, this book is a celebration of a time gone by.
