Into to Photographic Image Making Assingment #2: The Single Subject –Objectivity and Formal Constraints Review: Week 4, Feb 23 “Photography is the product of complete alienation” - Marcel Proust
In the late 1960’s German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher gained considerable recognition for a style of photography that used the camera as an objective tool for looking, standing at odds with the subjective tendencies of art photography of the era. A study of the Becher’s “typologies” reveals rigorous formal constraints. We will use these constraints as one of our first assignments. Create up to 15 separate images with any subject that will fill the frame, but not touch its edges. No cropping is allowed. We will print 3 5x7” prints and look at contact sheets for the rest.
