The Australian Government and Labor were condemned by speakers for their silence over the war.
Rawan Andalus, an Australian Palestinian lawyer, said government silence over the conflict was shocking.
“I suppose what we’re doing in Australia is really highlighting Australia’s complicity in condoning Israel’s actions, she said. “Just complete silence, the Herald reported.
Earlier in the day, about 10,000 people gathered at Dudley Page Reserve in Dover Heights for a rally held in solidarity with Israel. Director of public affairs at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry Alex Ryvchin said the rally showed there were thousands of Sydneysiders who were behind Israeli actions.

Gaza crisis: Australian MPs sign letter in protest against Israel attacks SIXTY-FIVE MPs have now signed Federal Labor member Melissa Parke’s strongly-worded letter protesting against Israel’s military attacks on Gaza. State and federal MPs have backed the campaign spearheaded by former United Nations lawyer and Fremantle member Ms Parke. Ms Parke, who lived in Gaza for more than two years, told the ABC that she had seen the toll the conflict had taken on the Palestinian people. Ms Parke is demanding all Australian politicians condemn the Israeli attacks. “You cannot have more than a thousand deaths and 6,000 injuries, more than three-quarters of those being civilians as collateral damage, and that being OK under international law, it’s simply not OK and it’s time that that was said,” Ms Parke said. The ABC revealed the letter also said that the rockets
fired from Gaza were not justified but cannot be compared with Israel’s bombing of Gaza. “Israel is the occupying power, Israel is the military might and if Israel and states like the US and Australia, which has a seat on the security council, would stand on the side of peace and justice then I think we would see a settlement happen.” Senior Muslim leader Samir Dandan of the Lebanese Muslim Association wants the Federal Government to ban Australians from fighting for Israel in Palestine. He said that in the way Australians who have travelled to Iraq and Syria to fight as combatants could face prosecution back home, those who fought for Israel should do as well. As Muslims gathered at mosques around Australia to celebrate Eid, the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, in the Gaza Strip, it was marked by the end of a short-term truce. At the time this paper went to print more than 1866 Palestinians have been killed during 28 days of fighting. About 43 Israeli soldiers have died in the conflict, representing the country’s largest loss of life in a military operation in nearly 10 years. Australia has promised to provide $5 million in humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

Letter calls for an end to silence over Gaza Australian Muslim Times is among the signatories that have joined together to write a letter querying Australian government and opposition inaction over the continuing hostilities in Gaza. Dated August 2, the letter reads: WE, THE undersigned organisations, community groups and societies, congratulate both the Federal Government and the Opposition for securing UNSC action regarding the terrorist attack on the flight MH17 over the Ukraine. Hopefully this will result in justice and a form of closure for the families involved. When juxtaposing the Australian official response of the events in Ukraine with that having occurred in Palestine over the recent weeks, we have to say we are deeply saddened and distressed at the reaction or complete lack thereof from members of our government and the opposition. To those who signed and supported Ms Melissa Parke’s Australian parliamentarians’ statement calling for an end to the Gaza hostilities, we wish to congratulate you for taking the stance that will see you on the right side of history in the years to come. In the past weeks, the world has been witness to the deliberate, brutal killing of innocent women and children and the wanton decimation of the Gaza region. It has drawn widespread condemnation from governments all over the world. Yet Australia, in particular, has not denounced this massacre. There is no mention of the disproportionate nature of Israeli defence (if indeed that was the intention) against Palestinians. Rather, we continue to hear the equivocation of these atrocities in support of Israel’s right to defend itself. The bombing of hospitals and schools and other civilian targets by the Israeli military shows the punitive nature of the occupying force and blatant disregard for Palestinian civil society.
condemned by our politicians, in some way leads us to believe that they do not value the lives of Palestinians as they do those of Israelis. As Australia is a member of the UN Security Council and a signatory to the Geneva Convention, you will be well aware of Israel’s belligerence and violations of International Law. For your benefit, we have outlined below some of their more notable transgressions in the face of the International community; Violation of customary law, human rights norms (A/ RES/194/III, § 11 and customary IHL as codified by the ICRC in 2005, Rule 132, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Art. 12 (2)) by prohibiting the return of Palestinian refugees to their homes. Violation of the Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions requiring Israel to withdraw from the Occupied Territory (87 resolutions to this day) and the UN Charter which obliges the Member States to “carry out the decisions of the Security Council” (Art. 25). Violation of the Palestinian people’s right to their natural resources and wealth through the use of Palestinian agricultural land by Israel; the exploitation of Palestinian water reserves and preventing Palestinian access to more than 10 per cent of their safe drinking water reserves (A/ RES/64/292). The establishment of Israeli settlements (4th 1949 Geneva Convention (GC), Art. 49 and 147); the expulsions of Palestinians from their territory (id.); The demolitions and expropriations of Arab houses and lands situated in the occupied country (1907 Hague Regulations, Art. 46 and 55);
At the time of preparing this letter, the death toll numbers more than 1000 innocent civilians, 5,000 injured and 200,000 homeless.
Military attacks against civilians, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks against Gaza and Palestinian refugees camps (customary international humanitarian law, ICRC Compendium Rules 1 and 14);
The indiscriminate bombings create an open air prison from which there is no escape. The fact that this is not
The current blockade which has lasted from 2007 to the present (RES 242/1860).

A United Nations Relief and Works Agency report of 2012 concludes that unless remedial action is taken, Gaza will be unliveable by 2020. It is important to note that some of these violations have been committed persistently for more than 40 years and there has been no UN action against Israel to stop this defiance other than what seems to be resolute tokenism We draw your attention to items 3 and 8. In light of this, we fail to understand why members of the Government and the Opposition do not take a stronger position in condemning the aimless killing. We fail to understand why you would support the annexing of another country’s land, water and agricultural resources and allow it to continue unquestioningly. We fail to understand how anyone can sit idly by and watch innocent children and women die and not condemn it. Where is the justice and the humanity in this? Under the International Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide as set out by the set the United Nations on December 9, 1948 in the In the intent such: a) b) c) d) e) General Assembly Resolution 260A (III) Article 2 they define it thus: present convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as Killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group to another group We ask you to speak out, not in support of one party over the other but in support of the UN resolutions that have been drafted in this matter. We ask you to speak out in support of human rights. Some of the members of the undersigned organizations may live in your constituency, others have family members living in this part of the world, but ALL are united along with many millions across the world, in the belief that a great injustice is being perpetrated with little or no condemnation from our political representatives. It is therefore important for them to know your stance on this issue. Continued page 4
Independent candidate speaks over conflict
THE INDEPENDENT candidate for Stretton, David Forde, is encouraging people to join Facebook page “Reaching An MP A Day For Gaza” in order to push politicians so speak out over the slaughter in Gaza.
In Mr Forde’s speech at AMARAH’s Palestine fundraising dinner on August 2 at Michael’s Oriental, he said the easiest action as part of any political engagement was to simply email or Facebook politicians.
”Share their responses with the community – that will expose their positions for good or bad,” Mr Forde said.
“I encourage people to become involved – remember they work for us, we don’t work for them.
“Many politicians will try to deflect the issue and say it is with the foreign minister or the opposition foreign spokesperson, or it’s not relevant to their level of government.
“Don’t let them off the hook that easy, as they can answer any question you put to them,” he said. “They can represent your concerns on any issue as a constituent and as part of their political party.
“It is important to engage with state parliaments on this. Several state parliaments – including Queensland – have set up a Parliamentary Friends of Israel groups, which they are entitled to, so they are aware of the issue.
Mr Forde said people should ask questions of their politicians face- to-face.
He said: “Some final questions you might consider including in any correspondence or conversation:
s 7HAT COURSE OF ACTION DO YOU ADVISE THAT THE Palestinians should undertake to prevent the ongoing annexation of their land and resources through a highly restrictive and oppressive occupation? s 7HAT WOULD YOU DO IT IF WAS YOUR HOME BEING demolished or your land was taken and water diverted for illegal settlements and you had no, or extremely limited, avenues to any justice system?

The dollar price has contributed to a slowdown in the mining and manufacturing/export sectors that had helped to sustain a strong economy here for years. Mining and manufacturing generated not only jobs but revenue for the government as well. We know the Abbott Government since its election has been swinging the axe to cut and reduce government spending.

Perhaps the worst factor of the latest cuts is that organisations set up to assist the most vulnerable in the community are having their resources massively reduced and won’t be able to provide the aid they previously had. This comes at a time when the amount of people facing hardship and unemployment has dramatically increased. The expenses and rise in the cost of living people face have continued to rise and we are finding other problems compounding everyday living. From an Islamic angle, we know we are privileged and are those people to whom Allah has given abundantly. We have an obligation towards those to whom Allah has tested with hardship and poverty.

There is another aspect of Islam that we have not noticed much in Australia. That is the concept of WAQF that can be found more commonly in countries where more Muslims live. In short, WAQF is when a person or business organises an income stream to support a needy cause.

Your response will be forwarded to the respective organisations informing them of your position on the matter. So why mention this? For many years, when there is a need in the community, we try to organise fundraising events to meet that need.

However, we have not seen the Muslim community maintain a sustainable, long-term source of charity.

Question: What is the ruling for participating in protests, and if they are permissible, what is the proof?
Answer: Protests are a means by which the Muslim community makes its voice heard regarding a specific issue, to those in authority so they can act accordingly or respond to their concerns. In the modern age, this has become the main objective behind protests: informing governments about the concerns of the governed.
We, as a Muslim community, have a real opportunity to show mainstream Australians just one of the many wisdoms Islam has given us.
We are also aware of the amount of “Donor Fatigue” in the community.
Islam as a faith welcomes protests according to the definition provided above, because they serve the Muslim community to make its positions known on issues. Especially if that issue pertains to a general benefit that affects Muslims or Muslim countries such as Palestine, in general, and Gaza, in particular.
It is time we really looked at implementing sustainable options. We need socio-economical models to be incorporated in the organisations we have, so that we can move things forward in the future.

Under such circumstances, it is obligatory upon the Muslim community (Fard Kifaya) to protest and seek (legal) means to clarify their positions, encouraging leadership to implement their hopes and to send a message to those who oppose them, as well as those who oppress the innocent, that the Muslim community is not negligent of their plight or the plight of other Muslims.
In fact, such protests are a form of struggle in God’s cause as support for the oppressed, and serve as a reminder to their enemies that the Muslim community is still ready to stand up for the plight of the oppressed.
However, all of this must be kept in mind, observing an important condition: one must not turn such protests into riots by destroying shops, property or harming others or engage in any other un-Islamic acts… If that happens, then such protests move from being religiously sanctioned to religiously prohibited and are termed as illegal and corrupted. GOVERNMENTS AROUND the world are joining in condemnation of Israeli aggression in Gaza by announcing boycotts of products and agreements. The Government of Maldives announced it would join other Arab nations in co-sponsoring a resolution at this week’s session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) calling for the protection of an independent Palestinian state and an extension of humanitarian aid. As well as a “symbolic” boycott of Israeli products, three agreements – signed in 2009 – would be annulled, the Maldives said. “I do not think Maldivians want any help from Israel or want to keep up relations with Israel. So from now on, the agreements have been annulled,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon said. “Even though what we give is small or symbolic, the way it is received is important. “The message we want to give is we are with the Palestinian people,” she added. Meanwhile, several Nobel peace prize-winners, major artists and activists have insisted on an international military boycott of Israel following its aggression on the Gaza Strip The 52 signatories include Nobel peace laureates Mairead Maguire and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel; film directors Mike Leigh and Ken Loach; author Alice Walker; US academic Noam Chomsky; Roger Waters of rock band Pink Floyd; and Stephane Hessel, a former French diplomat, Holocaust survivor and co-author of the universal declaration of human rights.
Their letter opens with a quote from Nelson Mandela: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Other signatories include John Dugard, a South African jurist and former UN special rapporteur in the occupied territories; Luisa Morgantini, former president of the European parliament; Cynthia McKinney, a former member of the US Congress; Ronnie Kasrils, a South African former cabinet minister; and the dramatist Caryl Churchill. And Turkish businesses and local authorities are joining a campaign, which first spread on social media, to boycott products manufactured in Israel, as the bloodshed provoked criticism in Turkey. Municipalities from Turkey’s largest cities, from Istanbul to small towns in Anatolia, have urged residents not to buy products made in Israel or which have links to Israel. A total of 12 municipalities have joined the calls to boycott Israeli products. Brands to be boycotted include Coca Cola, with users on Twitter and Facebook sharing lists of products made in Israel or manufactured by companies believed to have close ties to the Israeli Government. In a separate statement, the Turkish Union for Consumer Rights wanted citizens not to buy Israeli good. Earlier in July, Swedish authorities refused to allow the plane of Israeli President Shimon Peres to cross into its airspace en route to Norway, causing him to arrive late to his official reception.

He said there was only a handful of countries that could provide general support for Israel’s activities at the UN.
“Unfortunately, one is our own Australian government – and that includes both sides of politics with some minor variations,” he said.
“This evening it is disappointing that in such a packed venue, that we only have one MP from the LNP (Mark Stewart) and one candidate from the ALP (Peter Russo) and former senator Andrew Bartlett. On any other occasion in this venue, there would be numerous politicians and candidates attending.
“We’ve seen in the past week a very welcome and previously unheard of development, where 61 out of 800 federal and state MPs and senators have signed a letter condemning Israel, the rockets, and calling for an end to the blockade and occupation as part of any meaningful peace,”
Mr Forde said while politicians in parliaments all over the world, including the UK, were speaking out – in Australia there was very little tolerance of any political criticism of Israel from both main parties.
David Forde is the Independent Candidate for Stretton at the next Queensland election. David served with the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon at various stages between 1982 -1990 and has been to Israel many times and also the occupied West Bank and Gaza in 2010 and 2011.

WITH THE death toll in the Israel-Gaza conflict now standing at more than 1886, social media users have been swamping the internet with pictures of Jewish and Arab people in love and at peace with each other on the Jews and Arabs Refuse to Be Enemies Facebook page.
Earlier in July, almost 300 people took part in a demonstration in Haifa, Israel. They called their demo “Jews and Arabs Refuse to Be Enemies”.
The campaign was launched by Abraham Gutman (Jewish) and Dania Darwish (Arab), both students at Hunter College in New York, as Irael’s Operation Protective Edge began in Gaza

Hundreds of protesters in Canberra were among thousands in Australia last weekend who called for a ceasefire in response to the escalating violence.
Signs were painted with the words “Keep calm and support Palestine” and “End Gaza seige”.
The protesters insisted Australia now demand Israel halt attacks.
Organised by Concerned Canberrans for Peace, the protest included speakers such as the head of the Palestinian delegation to Australia, Izzat Abdu Hadi, and human rights activist Dr Kevin Bray. Event organiser Emad Soliman described the violence as mass murder and said Israel’s allies, including Australia, had a responsibility to intervene.

Australia issues warrants for IS fighters AUSTRALIA HAS issued arrest warrants for two of its nationals suspected of involvement in an attack on government forces in Raqqa province. Unverified images apparently showing the two men, Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar, holding the decapitated heads of soldiers from the 17th division circulated on Twitter last week.
Slaughter continues during holy MONTH ALMOST 2,500 people were killed in Syria during Ramadan month, the Syrian Network for Human Rights has reported. Of these, about 1,440 were civilians killed by progovernment forces, including more than 230 children. It is estimated 433 rebels died at the hands of Syrian army soldiers during the month beginning on June 28. The monitoring organisation did not record the number of soldiers loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who were killed. Continued losses among the ranks of the Syrian army has sparked rage among its supporters, Arabic daily al-Arabiya has reported. The loss of Division 17 of the pro-government army in northern al-Raqqa province provoked anger. There have been clashes in Jableh between the families of pro-government soldiers and government militias, al-Arabiya has reported.
Losses were recorded by Syria’s official army, but also by Lebanese fighters from Hezbollah, who have been fighting alongside pro-Assad forces in Syria since early 2013.
But 2014’s Islamic holy month has proved to be an unusually sensitive time because Xinjiang has been conducting a security clampdown following attacks the government alleges Muslim extremists are to blame for.
In one week recently, the group buried 12 fighters, including the nephew of Hezbollah general secretary Hassan Nasrallah, Arabic news site Arabi21 reported.
Human rights groups deny China’s claims, blaming the government’s religious and cultural discrimination towards Uighurs and other Muslim minorities as the cause of troubles in the resource-rich region.
China Ramadan ban hits Muslims in Xinjiang region
The Muslim presence many centuries.
A SECURITY crackdown in China’s Muslim northwest region of Xinjiang has led to students and civil servants being forbidden from fasting during the Ramadan holy month. “No teacher can participate in religious activities, instil religious thoughts in students or coerce students into religious activities,” revealed a statement posted on a school website in Ruoqiang County in Xinjiang. Government departments posted notices on their websites banning fasting during Ramadan, which began last weekend, while state-run Bozhou Radio and TV University posted on websites that they would “enforce the ban on party members, teachers, and young people from taking part in Ramadan activities”. A weather agency in western Xinjiang said it was calling “on all current and retired staff not to fast during Ramadan”. Meanwhile, a news site run by the government of Yili in northern Xinjiang said fasting was harmful to the physical wellbeing of students. The Chinese government has put restrictions on fasting for Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang province for several years now and similar bans have previously been handed down during Ramadan fasting.

There are reports of Sa’ad ibn Abi Waqas, a relative and friend of the Prophet Muhammad, travelling to China and inviting the emperor to Islam. The Mosque at Guangzhou is believed to have been built by Sa’ad. The Chinese government has justified the ban on Ramadan fasting in order to “ensure the health and safety of government employees”.
Curfew imposed to stop Muslim, Buddhist clashes in Myanmar THOUSANDS of angry protesters gathered in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, after tensions mounted at the funeral of a victim of clashes between Muslims and Buddhists. Scores of motorcycles led the funeral procession of a 36-year-old Buddhist man killed in violence following the death of a Muslim man earlier in the week.
He was beaten to death while en route to a mosque for morning prayers, according to his friend, U Nay Oo.
Screaming anti-Muslim slogans and attacking Muslim shops, Buddhists went on the rampage brandishing swords after claims spread on the internet that a Buddhist woman was raped by two Muslim men.
Buddhist monk and radical spiritual leader of the movement 969, Ashin Wirathu, seems to have played a part in inciting the violence after he posted on Facebook news of the rape and called for a crack down on what he called “jihadist Muslims”.
A mosque was also reportedly burned down and four others were attacked with stones during last week’s eruptions of violence.
Nighttime curfews were later announced after the sectarian violence threatened to spill over into the wider area.
The curfew was imposed after 14 people were injured in riots.
It bans gatherings of more than five people from the times of 9pm to 5am. Mandalay is extremely multicultural city. It is a patchwork of Buddhist, Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities who have lived side by side since before British colonial times.
“The violence happened because of hate speech and misinformation spread online,” an official from the president’s office reportedly told press agency AFP.
Islamic State makes gains MEANWHILE, Islamic State supporters on Twitter seem buoyed by recent advances they have claimed.
The Burmese news media has identified the Buddhist victim as U Tun Tun, a driver for an association that offers free funerals.
One, who goes by the name Ja’far, claimed dozens of fighters from the Free Syrian Army had defected to IS during fighting in the town of Akhtarin in Aleppo, near the border with Turkey.
The Muslim was identified by a friend as U Soe Min, the owner of a bicycle repair shop.
He said fighters from Jund al-Aqsa, another rebel group active in Syria’s war, have now joined IS.

Palestine fundraiser pulls in $100,000 Nora Amath MORE THAN 400 people gathered on August 2 for a joint Eid fundraising dinner to raise cash for the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Ramallah and Islamic Relief Psychosocial Centres in Gaza. Muslim Advocates for the Rights of All Humanity (AMARAH) joined with Islamic Relief Australia to co-host the dinner at Michael’s Oriental restaurant in Eight Mile Plains. Diners of multi-faith and multicultural backgrounds enjoyed great food and warm hospitality and managed to catch up with family and friends as well as make new ones. Most significantly, the attendees were there to raise much-needed funds for the two organisations in Palestine. Alhamdulillah, $100,000 was made on the night and will be shared equally between the two organisations. MC Anas Abdalla kept the program rolling, introducing a stellar line-up of speakers. Aunty Betty welcomed the attendees to country, while Hafiz Muhammad Khatree opened the program with verses from the Quran. Associate professor Halim Rane, a renowned scholar on this issue, was the keynote speaker and provided the background of the Israel-Palestine conflict, focusing specially on the origins and history of the conflict, the peace process, international law and a need for a just peace. Many who attended the night said they learned so much about the issue in only 15 minutes from Dr Rane’s speech. David Forde, who is running as an Independent for the state seat of Stretton in this year’s election, reflected on his trip to Palestine. He shared some of the struggles he witnessed by Palestinians in accessing basic needs such as necessary health care and education. He also encouraged those in the audience to engage in the democratic process of writing or meeting with their Member of Parliament (both state and federal) to seek their views on this issue. Attendees also witnessed short Skype sessions with Khader Rasras the executive director and senior clinical

psychologist in Ramallah, who discussed some of the programs the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre (TRC) was running. This was further elaborated by AMARAH human rights chairperson Salam El-Merebi, who visited TRC in December 2012 as part of her interest in narrative therapy. TRC started in 1997 and is a non-government organisation that works with Palestinians and nonPalestinians. During her visit, Ms El-Merebi learned that the centre was in desperate need of funding and how 150 families were affected when one therapist was lost through lack of funding. Ms El-Merebi said: “Palestinians are suffering psychologically and emotionally from the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine. “TRC also assists men, women and children in rehabilitating them back into the community when they are released from Israeli jails after being captured by the Israeli soldiers and placed in jails for years for no reason and without hope. “TRC also aims to promote the human rights in Palestine by promoting research and disseminating information regarding the plight of the torture victims.” Ms El-Merebi also reflected on some heartbreaking stories of loss, despair, torture, trauma and death. However, she also shared inspiration and hopeful advice that Palestinian children provided each other in these difficult times. Fadlullah Wilmot, deputy CEO and head of international programs at Islamic Relief Australia (IRA), highlighted that Islamic Relief has been working in Palestine and Gaza since 1998 providing emergency relief, development of sustainable livelihoods, education and child welfare. Mr Wilmot said that 80 staff and hundreds of volunteers were on the ground providing medical supplies, food and water. “At least 326,000 children require direct and specialised psycho-social support where 99 per cent of children have been directly affected by violence,” Mr Wilmot said. Thus, IR psychosocial centres in Gaza desperately need funding to help children suffering from psychological
disorders such as phobias, anxiety, behavioural difficulties, aggression, nightmares, depression and other symptoms. The latest Israeli incursion in Gaza will unfortunately exacerbate the situation for these children and their families. Funds raised from the dinner will provide necessary training for teachers, counsellors and community organisations to help support these children affected by the violence and trauma they experience as a result of living in Gaza. Ameer Omer wrote a special poem for the evening and after delivering it at the dinner, received a resounding applause from the clearly moved audience. His last stanzas were these words: It was very sad. The video made me cry. It showed how grateful we should be instead of scream and whine. These people have no homes, and yet they still survive. It shows how strong they are, and their will to strive. They’ve been kicked out. They’re going through genocide, for more than 66 years and they’re still alive. May God have mercy on them. Not just from you and me. But from the whole world. Palestine will be free.
Auctioneer extraordinaire Hussin Goss wowed the crowd once again with his talent. His amazing efforts, skill, humour and charisma ensured that items were being sold at the best possible price, reminding all bidders that the money raised was going to a great cause. One kaftan dress sold for an amazing $5,000. Those who had never witnessed Mr Goss in action left enthralled by his talent. Finally, Susan Al-Maani, IRA’s Queensland fundraising and community relations co-ordinator, brought the evening to a close and provided the vote of thanks. On behalf of both AMARAH and IRA, Ms Al-Maani thanked all who attended the dinner, as well as the dedicated volunteers, the expert speakers, the generous donors and Michael Nee of Michael’s Oriental Restaurant. Also acknowledged were all the sponsors who provided the necessary financial support to allow for an even more successful fundraiser. Doing the Difficult: Monique Toohey Saeed Saeed
Mspiration AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGIST and Without You author Monique Toohey unpacks the challenges of leaving an abusive relationship. Your new book, Without You, tackles the topic of abuse in an interesting way. It’s not an essay type study into the subject and it’s not a memoir either. Is it accurate to say that it’s a collection of thoughts and reflections on how to overcome an abusive relationship? What I tried to do is present powerful statements that will allow the reader to personalise moments that might be familiar to them if they are either in an abusive relationship or one that is really unhealthy. I would not say that it is therapy in a book but the statements are very useful for clients when I am working with them one-on-one. Through my experience I was hearing this common language of what people say to themselves to keep them stuck in a relationship. That’s why I called the book Without You, because that concept is the hardest part of leaving an abusive relationship. For example; on average when a relationship is heading downhill, people would think of divorcing or separating three years before they do. This process of detachment is what this book is about. I hope it supports that process in order for people to move on from something that is abusive to find themselves again to become healthier.
You adopted an almost lyrical writing style for Without You. Was it a challenge to present such a dense topic in short and sharp reflective passages?
my book I want them to understand that their experience of being in an abusive relationship and trying to get out is very common. It is a really familiar story. The more they read this book they will see that it is a shared experience.
Your book seems to follow an arc moving from sadness and anger to forgiveness of self.
What laid the seeds for the book?
I think there are similar patterns in the clients that I worked with and the literature that I read. One of which is that people are really sad. Anger is also very heavily present because that is an energetic catalyst to get people out of something that is unjust. Once you are out of it you need to let the anger go. This is because it was useful and it got you out of the relationship but then the tricky situation is how to stay out of it when the anger dissipates. I spoke about this with clients and they say that (after the anger) they experience a surge of positive emotion, then they get a little bit confused in that they say ‘I feel better now, maybe the relationship wasn’t that bad.’ Their own recovery tricks them into believing the relationship wasn’t that hard. Where in fact what is really happening is that they are healing and there is less poison in their life. But because of habit they feel they have to direct that positive energy, that love, care and forgiveness back to the relationship when really there is nothing there that is left. People go through trial and error. On average people go back to an abusive relationship six times before it really sinks in that it is not really working. I am trying to highlight that in the book very gently. I am not saying just get up and leave because I know how difficult it is. I want people to develop the insight into what might be influencing them to go back or stay in that very unhealthy relationship.
My first serious relationship was fantastic to begin with, like most relationships are. Then after about five years thing started to deteriorate. I was studying psychology at the time. Things started to go downhill and you realise you are not the psychologist in your own relationship as much you might have some knowledge. Things started to turn quite ugly and I found myself in the last few years of a ten-year relationship that it got to the point that it was emotionally abusive and manipulative. I had to work out how to get myself out of that. For me the leaving bit was the easiest part, but it was the decision to be without that person that was extremely difficult to navigate. There is just so much introspection in that you have to look inside yourself and make a decision in what you value in life. I made the decision to be without my husband at the time because it wasn’t healthy for me and the daughter we were raising.
Are the statements in Without You the thoughts one goes through before leaving an abusive relationship? When you are in an abusive relationship you are doing a lot of feeling, you can feel that things are not right but you can’t articulate why any relationship is complex but when you add on tones of what looks like manipulation and abuse, then it becomes even more complex. So with this book I am trying to pull apart and break down these thoughts with these statements.
We are in the era of the lyric in that people memorise them easily. So in its simplicity I want it to be memorable. I want it to be in their head long enough for them to ruminate, replay it in their mind and replace the kind of thinking that might be unhelpful. There is also something about a one-liner. There is a simplicity to it, in that it allows people to stop and contemplate. It pulls the reader back to reflect on the statement they just read. When you are trying to help people grow, move on or change then reflection and insight are completely necessary for that. I find that all it takes is sometimes one sentence for it to gell with someone. To make them stop and reflect. With
Does that cycle apply to most victims of abuse?
Do you find that some of us have to hit rock bottom before deciding to work on getting better? I think that’s true for many of us. The body is an amazing thing. If you are trying to avoid feeling a particular emotion then the body will take
you there. The mind may be replaying a story where you feel “I probably should get out of this relationship but I can’t”. Then the body keeps sending you the message of “sad” till you get depression or frustrated and irritated. So in a way I hope the books helps you in getting that realignment between the message sent and what action you need to take.
One of the themes of Without You is boundaries. Is the lack of boundaries a key cause of relationship breakdowns?
Absolutely. In many societies the marriage vowels espouse “two people will become one.” That is rubbish. Two people never become one and problems arise from that point onwards. I think, unfortunately, in most countries we don’t get instruction in knowing what a healthy relationship looks like. I am very pleased to see the in the last five years some programs in high-schools start talking to young people about what is a respectful relationship. That is a fantastic move because prior to that many generations had no understanding on how to do a healthy relationship. The only thing that we normally reference is the blueprint which our parents left us with. If you are a person who observed their parents have a healthy relationship then you are lucky. The truth is people do the best they can with whatever is a reference point for them. A lot of us are just winging it.
How would relationship?
you
describe
a
healthy
I sort of describe it as a way where there are two hands coming together as if they are about to clap, but instead they are leaning on each other for support. I see that as a healthy relationship. Now if you imagine both hands becoming interlocked, that’s when people get confused on where they and their partners start and finish. Then you add in roles and responsibilities of each person and then it just gets tricky – to the point of ugly.
Is there any final message you want to pass to the readers of Without You?
Leaving or rising above the impact of an abusive relationship is difficult but not impossible. People are always saying it’s too difficult and they can’ do it, but we do difficult every day. The truth is staying in an abusive relationship is difficult so they are already doing it quite well. What I am saying is that it is not impossible, it is a move that they can make and I hope the book shows them how they can make that.

Islamic Relief Australia: ‘Grateful to Serve’ Nora Amath Islamic Relief Australia, Board of Directors
THE NEW CHAPTER of Islamic Relief Australia has opened in Queensland with representatives Nora Amath as Secretary on the Board of Directors, Fadlullah Wilmot as Deputy CEO and Head of International Programs and Susan Al-Maani as the Queensland Fundraising and Community Relations Co-ordinator. Since its inception, much-needed funds have been raised for wells and Ramadan food hampers in Somalia and the Central African Republic (CAR), and emergency appeals for Bosnia, Afghanistan and Palestine. Other funds were raised for Chechnya, Iraq, Kosovo, Syria and Iraq among others. The motto of Islamic Relief is: “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve humanity, for the thirsts quenched, for the food delivered, and the schools, hospitals and villages built. We are grateful for the lives changed and for the lives saved – Alhumdulillah. In particular, we are also tremendously grateful for all the support Queensland has provided. Here is a snapshot of some of the successful campaigns, Susan Al-Maani and her dedicated group of more than 60 volunteers have organised in the past few months.
Saturday, June 21 The Al-Nisa Youth Group organised Glitz and Glamour, a women’s-only event, with proceeds going to Islamic Relief’s water and sanitation programs. The sold-out
event raised nearly $11,500 to go toward the building of a large bore well in Somalia, which will provide water for more than 60,000 people.
Saturday, July 5 On Saturday, July 5, Islamic Relief Australia in conjunction with the Somalian Community in Brisbane held a fundraising dinner for the Feed the Hungry Appeal at Michael’s Oriental. Nearly $15,000 was raised to purchase food packages during Ramadan for some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Somalia and the Central African Republic. The event was managed and organised with the assistance of key leaders from the Somalian community. Islamic Relief Australia would especially like to thank all the volunteers who gave so much of themselves to this event as well as the sponsors for their generosity: Dial a Local Doctor, Brisbane Diagnostics, Happy and Family Day Care, Motherly Love Day Care, Youngstar Day Care, Amani Day Care, Best Friend Family Day Care, United Hearts Family Day Care Scheme, GFTI: Training Growth and Success.
Stalls throughout June and July Susan’s and her dedicated group of volunteers organised information and donation stalls at events and more than $50,000 was raised with proceeds from the stalls went to the Gaza Emergency Relief Appeal, the
Bosnian Flood Emergency Appeal and the Afghanistan Landslide Appeal.
Palestine Emergency Raised $100,000
Appeal
Campaign
On Sunday, July 27, a successful fundraiser was held at the Gold Coast Mosque for the Emergency Appeal for Gaza. Organised by the recently established Ayia Foundation and The Islamic Multicultural Association of the Gold Coast (IMACG) in conjunction with Islamic Relief Australia, the event raised more than $100,000 for much needed medical supplies, food and other essential items. In particular, Islamic Relief Australia would like to thank all of the volunteers on the night, especially the organisers Hussin Goss, Shehab Faragallah, Rami Elmohandis, Maher Jordan, Mahmoud Faragallah and Ree Ali. Deputy CEO and Head of International Programs Fadlullah Wilmot and Queensland Community Relations and Fundraising Coordinator Susan Al-Maani were deeply moved by the generosity of the people who attended the night. Islamic Relief Australia would also like to respond to some questions, especially to how Islamic Relief Australia was getting the aid into Gaza with the blockade. Communications Officer Annarose Robinson said: Islamic Relief and most other organisations work through Karm Abu Salem, the main border through which goods travel.
This border is now operating for essential humanitarian needs (including food and medical aid). As such, the frequent closures of Rafah do not affect the aid coming into Gaza from Islamic Relief.
What has your donation done so far?
Your donation has provided Palestinians with three trucks of desperately needed medical supplies, and two trucks of essential medicine to 12 hospitals. It has also helped deliver six truckloads of food to 11 hospitals. It’s delivered 400 food packs, which will provide muchneeded staple foods to 2,000 people.
Where will your donation go in the future?
We’re planning to continue to provide food and medical aid, and also provide eight schools with water tanks. This will give 13,000 people access to clean water. How does Islamic Relief know what’s needed?
Islamic Relief has been working in Palestine since 1998, and almost all of our staff in Gaza are from Gaza. We’ve been there in the 2009 conflict and the 2012 conflict. Because of this, our experienced staff were ready for the current situation.
We had prepared – in advance – stockpiles of essential non-perishable food and medical supplies.
What can you do next?
You’ve already done so much to help the people in Gaza. But we’re asking, for their sake, that you help even more. Your donations are being put to work right now to effectively and efficiently assist the people in Gaza.
Finally, when we spoke to our Islamic Relief colleague Hatem Shurrab, in Gaza, he reminded us of this: “The first thing we need from people all over the world is your prayers.

Eid Mubarak: Muslim Charitable Foundation gives blessings but says poverty is on the rise THE MUSLIM Charitable Foundation has delivered its Eid message but said financial hardship was on the rise among certain elements of the community. MCF vice-chairman Osman Rane said that in the past financial year, its team had investigated, visited, interviewed and recorded 269 cases of hardship compared to 177 cases, for the previous time period. He said that this indicated that the problem of welfare in the Muslim local community was growing and there was a need to recognise that things were not right “here in our own back yard”. “Many clients have limited or no income and don’t have the basic necessities, such as white goods, bedding and household items. “Others are struggling to survive from week to week on Centrelink payments or part-time work,” Mr Rane said. “Many are forced to seek help from Christian-based organisations. With constant increases in the cost of living, more people are finding it difficult to pay their rent or bills for essential services, such as electricity and gas. “The introduction of the Halal Food Bank run by the SeekersHub Brisbane has provided us with 20 to 30 food hampers a month, which we have distributed to the most needy,” he said. “May Allah (SWT) reward them and all the donors, Inshallah. “We are dealing with an increase in the number of domestic issues, such as separations, divorces, domestic abuse, homeless cases and family breakdowns.
“Usually, it is the mother or wife left to manage on a very limited income. “MCF has paid funeral costs for those that could not afford to pay the required amounts, and we foresee an increase in this need in the future. “Others required urgent medical treatment, purchase of medical aids or payment of medical bills. “It is pleasing to see the recognition given to MCF from government support agencies, imams, societies, and organisations. “I sincerely thank our donors for their ongoing generous financial support,” he said. Mr Rane said MCF has a 100 per cent donation policy, where all monies collected were distributed to those in need.

Coffee shop compo for overseas worker sacked for querying wages
Car insurer in climbdown over denying Sydney family payout
THE OPERATOR of a former Gloria Jean’s coffee shop in Sydney’s Kings Cross has paid $2000 compensation to an employee who was sacked when she questioned her pay rate.
A SYDNEY family who was denied an insurance claim because they returned the forms late has received an apology from one of Australia’s major insurers, AAMI.
Senan Pty Ltd, which had operated a Gloria Jean’s franchise on Darlinghurst Rd, also gave a written apology to the former employee after an inquiry by the Fair Work Ombudsman, AAP has reported. In June 2013, the casual employee asked Senan director Elaine (Lie Ming) Zhou if the $12 an hour flat rate was the correct rate of pay. Two days later, Ms Zhou axed the employee’s next shift and sent her an email ending her employment. The 26-year-old foreign worker working in Australia on a skilled graduate visa complained to the Fair Work Ombudsman. The Ombudsman said Senan contravened the Fair Work Act when it axed her rostered shift and dismissed her. It found 15 other staff had been underpaid more than $16,000 between June, 2011 and July, 2013 – including one employee who was owed $8,200. The staff had been underpaid their minimum rate of pay, casual loadings, weekend penalty rates and payment of accrued entitlements on termination. The Fair Work Ombudsman also found Senan had failed to keep proper employment records, AAP has revealed. As part of the Enforceable Undertaking, Senan has written to all affected employees offering its “sincere regret”. It also agreed to pay $2000 to the employee whose job was terminated. Ms Zhou was required to undertake workplace relations training on the rights and responsibilities of employers. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the Senan case should serve as a reminder that employees have a lawful right to question workplace entitlements. Ms James said Senan and Ms Zhou co-operated with Fair Work inspectors to rectify her contraventions and put measures in place to ensure the mistakes were not repeated in future.

Nasser Zahr and his wife Faten, of Beverly Hills in Sydney’s south, were injured in 2008 when their Daihatsu Sirion was rear-ended after dropping their two children at school. Mr Zahr was left with carpal tunnel in both his wrists and his wife still suffers from a back injury. Their recovery was made harder because their two children need round-the-clock care due to their disabilities. Mr Zahr, a former computer technician who now cares for his family full time, hit out at AAMI, telling News. com.au it was a “money-hungry company” and said its actions had been “absolutely pathetic”. “They’ve put us through three years of misery,” he said. “Suffering has become part of my everyday life,” he said to News.com.au AAMI, the insurer of the driver at fault, had initially rejected the claim on the grounds the explanation about the delay of two-and-a-half years was inadequate. Mr Zahr said he he delay returning the form because he had waited to see if the injuries to his hands and wrists would heal on their own. AAMI offered the Zahrs $77,000 in April of 2013, but the family rejected this. Mr Zahr then turned to online petitioner Change.org to put pressure on the insurer, with the petition attracting more than 92,000 signatures. AAMI then released a statement to news.com.au. It read: “AAMI would like to acknowledge that we have placed too much focus on the independent assessment of the claim and the issue of the late lodgement of Mr Zahr’s claim,” a spokesman said. “We apologise to Mr Zahr and his family.” AAMI said it it would take a few of days to reach a settlement with the Zahr family.”
Beef and alcohol not in Golden Circle juice, says Heinz HEINZ AUSTRALIA has defended itself over claims beef and alcohol were present in it Golden Circle juice range. The food and drinks giant said that although beef and alcohol were both used as clarifying agents in its drinks, the final product did not contain the ingredients. The news had also caused outrage within parts of the Hindu community, many of whom avoid meat and alcohol, as well as vegetarians and vegans. But Mohammed Yusef, president of the Islamic Council of Queensland, said in a Brisbane Times interview that Golden Circle products could be consumed by Muslims because the beef gelatine used in its production was from Halal cattle. “We did some investigation ourselves because we wanted to make sure it was fine to drink Golden Circle juice,” he told the Brisbane Times. “We found the gelatine was from Halal cattle and there was no alcohol in the final product, which made it fine for consumption.” Heinz Australia said in a statement: “Flavours, including alcohol-based flavours, are used across the Golden Circle and Original Juice Co juice and drink ranges.” Carolyn Fox, Heinz Australia spokeswoman, said that the beef-derived gelatine was used to remove the “cloudiness” in its apple juice and that “very small amounts of alcohol” were mixed flavour concentrates designed to keep them “stable, clean and crisp”.
The vote is the first pointer to how the new Senate could vote on the Government’s huge higher education reform policies.
Joe Hockey has said he will bypass the Senate by ordering cuts outside of parliamentary approval if his measures are not agreed to.
“I say to the Labor Party and to the Greens – if your instinct is to say ‘no’ immediately and to stick with that, you are dealing yourself out of having an influence on public policy,” Mr Hockey said on ABC radio.
“Because if the immediate reaction is ‘no’, with no opportunity to open discussions in relation to matters, then there are other alternatives that we can take.
“We are open to discussions – as any reasonable Government would be – but we are not going to step away from the fact that the budget needs to be repaired.”
The agenda includes a full deregulation of fees, a 20 per cent across-the-board course funding cut and yet more interest on student debts.
There has been strong opposition to university funding cuts and increased fees.
Education Minister Christopher Pyne believes most of his package will pass.
Palmer United Party said he was opposed to fee increases and university funding cuts.
Mr Pyne’s office will meet Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party senator Ricky Muir this week to twist his arm on the Coalition’s vision for higher education.
She said the final product that reached consumers did not contain gelatine
The $435m cuts would have led to cuts to university equity programs, research grants and training schemes.
Heinz Australia said consumers should always “carefully” read the ingredient list although Australian regulatory standards do not require processing aids or components of flavours to be declared on the label of products.
The Government tried to push through cuts this Monday but the Senate passed a disallowance motion to block it.
Treasurer Joe Hockey in cuts threat during budget stalemate THE GOVERNMENT’S bid for spending cuts has been hit hard with the Senate blocking $435m of university cuts.
The latest Newspoll survey found 69 per cent of those surveyed opposed increases in university fees while 65 per cent disagreed with the Abbott Government’s 20 per cent public funding cut to university courses.
Fewer Australians now support Tony Abbott’s Government than Julia Gillard’s Labor Party before they were thrown out in a record trouncing just TEN months ago The Newspoll survey showed support for Tony Abbott at its lowest level since 2009.

Annual college iftar dinner a huge success THE AUSTRALIAN International Islamic College held its annual community Iftar Dinner on the weekend of July 18 and 19 at the Gold Coast and Durack campuses. Many families and community representatives attended the special events. Families from the college community helped to arrange a vast array of food ranging from salads and meats to pastries and desserts. There were special prayers and speeches. One of the speeches, by Imam Mohammed, expressed the importance of appreciating God’s blessings during the month of Ramadan and how we can use these blessings to contribute productively to Australian society. A college spokesperson said it was a great opportunity to meet up with community members and welcome our new parents and staff to the AIIC family. Community representatives expressed their appreciation to the Australian International Islamic College for organising such events which served to bring different communities together.
Iftar a great success THE QUEENSLAND Intercultural Society hosted its Seventh Annual Iftar in Parliament House. Parliamentarians past and present, community leaders, academics, Imams and business leaders were in attendance. Dr Mustafa Ally served as the master of ceremonies, calling on the co-hosts, the Hon Glen Elmes MP (LNP), Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs and Minister Assisting the Premier, Mrs Desley Scott MP (ALP) and Abdul Celil Gelim, Executive Director of Queensland Intercultural Society to welcome their guests. Imam Ahmed Abu Ghazaleh called the Adhan and recited a passage from the Quran. After Maghrib prayers were held in the halls of the Parliament Building, dinner was served. Dr Tim Soutphommasane, the Race Discrimination Commissioner, delivered the keynote address. This was followed by the 2014 QIS Community Leadership Award to Assoc Prof Mohammad Abdalla and the Queensland Public Service Award to Mr Bob Atkinson retired Police Commissioner.
P&C representatives also said that the evening was a great night for the whole college community. “The college and the P&C would like to thank all of the community members who contributed to this event,” a spokesperson said. “It is such a special time for our families and our children, as they feel so excited that they can be at College to share this special family event. “We would like to especially thank all the AIIC teachers for their hard work in preparing for this evening and sharing in the occasion with us.”
Hon Glen Elmes MP's speech: “I’d like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which we meet today, and pay my respects to Elders past and present. I also acknowledge the significant and lasting cultural and social benefits that people from different cultural backgrounds have brought to our great state,” Mr Elmes said. “Firstly, I take this opportunity to congratulate the Queensland Intercultural Society for its fantastic work to promote harmony among all Queenslanders. “I highly commend the Queensland Intercultural Society, which has a history of inclusivity, consistently inviting members of the non-Muslim community, members of government and other faiths to participate at events such as these,” he said. “I believe Queensland’s strength is found in the diversity of its people. The Muslim community is also an essential part of Queensland’s cultural diversity. “We are fortunate to live in a country that prides itself on freedom of religion as a crucial component of its democracy. “Thank you again for including me in the Iftar Dinner, which has special relevance and importance to the Australian Muslim community, and provides an important symbolic showcase for the interfaith and intercultural depth of Australia.”
Plight of homeless Muslims
MUSLIM men and women are facing homelessness in growing numbers. A spokesperson for the Muslim Revert Network said a number of new revert Muslims were facing social exclusion from families and communities. “Often, the disastrous effect of separation from their spouse and children occurs,” he said. “Existent Muslims also undergo marital problems and separation that results in homelessness. “You can well imagine the feeling these persons undergo when they have been dislocated, ostracised and rejected by their beloved ones. They look for support from well-wishing Muslim community members,” he said. Four years ago, the Muslim Ladies Home was established. For almost two years, the men’s home has been operating successfully with the commitment and hard work of community members. The Muslim Revert Network spokesperson said that the financial cost and responsibility of these homes has been borne by kind and generous members of the community. “May Allah SWT reward them. In the last year, more than 20 Muslim men have been housed adjoining the Kuraby Mosque. “This centre provides religious, moral, emotional and settlement support. “Your contributions are providing highly essential services and this is most appreciated by the brothers living there, who thank you immensely for your efforts, compassion and financial support,” he said. Please continue to generously support this most worthy cause. Zakaat money can also be used for these purposes. JazakAllahkheir on behalf of the committee and the management. AMARAH and the Spirit of Ramadan Nora Amath
ON FRIDAY EVENING, AMARAH once again hosted its annual community meal iftar at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in South Brisbane. This event, in its 6th year, is one of the most anticipated and loved events on the AMARAH annual calendar, so popular that many volunteers had to be turned away once again.
People have often asked why AMARAH hosts an iftar at a church. From the very beginning, we recognised that there were many iftars already held by various mosques and community organisations for those in the Muslim community. However, we felt that the needs of our homeless and more disadvantaged friends in the wider Australian society should also be met, especially during this holy month of Ramadan. Thus, when we heard about the fortnightly Friday community meal, which had been happening at the Church for over 30 years, we kindly asked their permission to join in. After all, one of the main objectives of Ramadan is to feel the hunger and thirst some people have to endure on a daily basis
AMARAH members and friends cooked, hosted, served and enjoyed a meal with the some of the less fortunate members in our society. Over 70 people attended the iftar, many who are homeless, mentally and/or physically disabled, and/or living in desperate situations, financially, emotionally and physically.
Additionally, the AMARAH team also felt this was a great opportunity for people who may have never met Muslims to begin that connection and have that conversation with us. It was an enjoyable night for all- those who came hungry left with full bellies and smiles. Conversations were exchanged and new connections were formed. A few of our disadvantaged friends joked that they were also fasting and were eager to “break their fast” with us. For the AMARAH volunteers, it was a humbling, yet rich experience; those who participated were not only thankful for the opportunity to make a little bit of difference to some people’s lives, but were also pleased to meet and engage with such wonderful

*Dave Andrews is a close friend and member of AMARAH and is a devout Christian. Again this year, he has decided to show his solidarity and fast alongside his Muslim friends. While fasting he reflected on the dua, Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim and compiled them into a book. He was also invited on the ABC - The Spirit of Things to record his reflections. Email us at amteditors@gmail.com Full house for Toowoomba Eid Celebrations The Islamic Society of Toowoomba organised Eid ul Fitr prayers in rented venue at the Toowoomba Indoor Bowling Association Hall in the city area on Monday, 28 July 2014 as per the announcement of the Grand Mufti of Australia. Over one thousand Muslims participated in the Eid prayers which started with Taqbeer at 7:00am. The women's room was full and the large room for the men was almost full. Traditional sweets were brought by families and the Society provided the plates, cups, spoon etc and juice to celebrate the end of fasting. The Imam emphasised the unity of the ummah that believes in one book, faces one Qibla, and follows one prophet (sws) in his sermon. The Society distributed Eid Gift to children under the age of 10 years (162 this year) after the Eid prayers. Social activities by different communities and home visits continued throughout the day. Sadaqatul Fitr was also collected for distribution among the poor. Images and text supplied by Dr Shahjahan

The two towers of Ta'if Shibli Zaman suhaibwebb.com
IN THIS DAY you will find a wide variety of perspectives across the kaleidoscopic amalgam of thought which is the Internet. From mourning, to patriotism, to conspiracy theory, someone has something to say and, by God, you are going to hear it. Sometimes you’re glad that you did and other times, not so much. Yet, when I woke up this morning, a vivid realization stuck out in my mind that was so lucid it felt as if it wasn’t my own. It involves a piece of history practically every single Muslim knows. So if you’re Muslim and thinking “I’ve heard this before, dude,” just please bear with me as I briefly summarise it for those Muslim and non-Muslim who may not have heard it ( Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari). Early in the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), he and the Muslims had been turned out of every refuge they had ever known. Mecca had been persecuting and torturing them for calling the people to worship One God instead of the idols of their forefathers. Ultimately, they threw them out and forced them into the harshness of the arid desert. There, Muhammad’s uncle, Abu Talib, who had protected him like a father following the deaths of his father and grandfather, died. There, Muhammad’s one and only wife, Khadija, who married the much younger Muhammad for his honesty, and who had been his main source of emotional support and comfort during the confusing times of his first revelations from God, died. The visceral sense of dejection he felt at that point would drive even the firmest believer to hopelessness and despair. So many times have so many people wondered, “If there is a God, why doesn’t He hear me? Why isn’t He answering me? Why does He let this happen?” Yet, Muhammad was a man driven by the Spirit of God and, in being so, was always solution oriented even in the bitterest times of woe. Such morose laments were simply alien to his personality. He went with Zayd, a former slave whom he had freed and then adopted as his own son, to the neighboring city of Ta’if in hopes of having an audience amongst the three brothers who shared control of the city. It was difficult not to respect Muhammad and feel compelled to
lend him an ear. He wasn’t a nobleman, but he wasn’t a commoner either. He just had one of those faces that drew you in and much of it based upon numerous reports was due to his constant and contagious smile. Above all, he was known as “al-Amin” or “The Truthful”. So the three ruling brother’s of Ta’if gave him audience. Soon, however, they realized that what he called for would make enemies out of their neighbors in Mecca. Regardless of the truth of what he spoke, it was in no way politically or economically in their benefit. Seeing that danger, and knowing that the Meccans would eagerly want to know what their allies in Ta’if did to secure their loyalty, they repulsed Muhammad and Zayd and let hooligans of the street drive the children to bludgeon and pummel him with stones. Zayd did his best to shield his foster father but to no avail. The crowd was simply overwhelming. In the pursuit of truth, holy blood is always shed. Suffuse with blood to the point that even his shoes were filled with it, he just walked and walked. He would later be asked if there was a day worse than the Battle of Uhud. The Battle of Uhud was a crushing defeat the Muslims faced wherein Muhammad was struck in the head so hard his helmet split and pieces of chain mail were embedded in his face. It was a day of losses too great and innumerable to list here. Yet, he would say that this day was worse than even that. So as he walked, he raised his head to the sky and saw the archangel Gabriel descending from a cleaving in the clouds accompanied by yet another angel he had never seen. Gabriel called out to him, “God Almighty has witnessed what the people have done to you and how they have rejected you. So he has sent the Angel of Mountains to do as you command.” The other angel greeted him and called out to him, “O Muhammad! Verily, God has witnessed what the people have done. I am the Angel of Mountains and your Lord has sent me to do whatever you shall command. What do you command? If you wish it, I
shall topple upon them the two mountains that tower over them!” The word for “two mountains” in the Arabic text is “al-akhshabayn” which means literally “The two rockies” ( Lisan al-`Arab, Ibn al-Mandhur). It indicates that had those two mountains been brought down upon the people, they would have faced a hailstorm of boulders and stones that would have ripped them to shreds before the mass of the mountains crushed them. At that very moment it was Muhammad’s call. The fate of those people who had mercilessly bludgeoned him to a pulp was placed in his hands. But there was no momentary silence wherein he pondered his decision. There was no thought process. There was only the answer that came naturally to the man who was Muhammad: “No! Rather it is my ardent wish that God raise from amongst them a people who will worship Him alone and place nothing before Him.” Though abused, broken, disrespected and bloodied, he had placed his hope in those people’s future being better than their present. He had placed hope in their children being better than their parents. He had placed hope in them.
On that day, when he could have easily given in to rage, and revenge could have easily been his, he decided not to bring the two mountains down upon a people some of whom had harmed him and probably most of whom had not to redress the abuse he had been dealt that day. Make no mistake, when the time came to fight, Muhammad and his companions proved formidable as soldiers with a disciplined ferocity that struck fear in the two superpowers of his day: Rome and Persia. Yet, for this affront at Ta’if that was centered primarily at him, he would not punish them.
It was the way of our beloved Prophet to not hold accountable an entire people for the injustices of their leaders and those who followed them in oppression. It was the way of our beloved Prophet to not bring those two towers down upon them. Think about that.
Author’s note: There is an additional historical nuance in that the commentaries of both Ibn Hajar and al-Nawawi mention that the two mountains were actually outside of Mecca and the offer was to destroy the people of Mecca for driving the Prophet to his abuse in Ta’if. Though, I wrote this article according to the popular narrative that is most widely known, I wanted to make the readers aware of these additional details..

Orthodox Jews’ Hipster Hijabs Spark Controversy WHEN CO-OWNERS of Brooklyn-based clothing store Mimu Maxi – Mimi Hecht and Mushky Notik – posted a photo of a customer looking chic and beautiful in a lime-green maxi-skirt they may have expected a stream of Facebook likes. Instead, their photo sparked an outpouring of scorn and a controversy they could never have anticipated, revealed Orthodox news service Col Live. Things took a turn for the worse when Mimu Maxi re-posted Summer Albarcha’s outfit of the day – an MM skirt, slouchy shirt and hijab – on their Facebook page and Instagram. Ms Albarcha runs popular Hipster Hijabis, which is dedicated to showcasing Muslim women sporting “trendy yet modest fashion”. Many of Mimu Maxi’s Orthodox customers claimed a photo of a hijabi woman was “insensitive”, given tensions in Israel and Palestine.
are their values and morals, their experiences in life, their personality and willingness to open themselves to the world around them, and willingness to accept the world and others around them. “I love that they saw this, I love that they support each other. “This moment is a HUGE lesson for both communities that, instead of defining each other by religion, they CAN come together as human beings.” The sisters-in-laws said Ms Albarcha shared “some of our deepest values”, and that “any Jewish support of modesty in the world at large should be promoted [and] encouraged” – especially now, they added. Ms Albarcha told the Village Voice the comments “were not discouraging at all, but rather empowered me”. She has also picked up Jewish followers who love her coverage of hijabi fashion.
Other customers called for a boycott of the Mimu Maxi, Col Live reported. Ms Hecht and Ms Notik said they still backed their decision “100 per cent”, and condemned their customer base for its intolerance.
Find your call through awareness Hanan Al-Alawneh MUTUALLY RESPECTFUL in all communication is our way forward to a world where people can live with diversity and difference. As a passionate woman about life and all that life has to offer, I look for the pattern in my experiences to what is it that I have to do in this life to answer the call to be all what I am meant to be, to authentically be "rahmah lel a'alameen" a mercy upon all creations, since it is the headline for Islam. I have found the answer to this question always starts with me and ends somewhere with others. The inevitable truth is that we are called to contribute, participate and communicate. But the fundamental question is HOW? How do we inspire future generations to consciously contribute, participate and communicate as the norm? How do we, in spite of the differences and diversity in our cultural, biased ideology and historical beliefs and thinking, that seems opposite, work with your way, my way, both and, not either or? Based on the insights from my own contemplative prayers the answer is awareness! It is the spark of divinity in each and every one of us; it is our wonderful ability to answer the call to be what we are meant to be without knowing exactly how or why, it is the virtue of authoring creative life with others. It starts with each and every action we take in our daily lives and ends at national or international decisions that alter the shape of humanity for generations to come.
But among the negative comments, there was also high praise from fashionistas. One person posted on the Refinery 29 fashion website: “I find this truly beautiful. This religious angst goes back so far and these women have come together to celebrate each other as INDIVIDUALS, shedding their religious differences, rising above their beliefs and acting wholly on mutual respect of the other as a HUMAN BEING.
Awareness starts with one's self, observing and listening, knowing who we are, why we do what we do, what are my gifts in my "rouh" soul, what is Allah
really wants form me and only me. Then it is followed by discernment, our ability to reflect and relate between our principles and programming and the new insights from Allah. Then comes the discretion, and that is where our "Iman" belief is tested, it is our choice to act or not upon those insights.
As a life coach, this is what I endeavoured to authentically practice with on going discernment and discretion, I endeavour to create a sacred space where my clients are safe, secure where they may examine their life's journey and be open to more integrated awareness of their call. It gives me great joy and I find it awesome to work with young adults in contemporary society knowing they are the future shapers of history.
May Allah bless us all with wisdom, truth, beauty and understanding and help us to get through the challenges that come with acting on it. May we all be aware of the Grace in our life leading us on.
“Religion does NOT define a person, what defines a person

Iraq a team to watch as Asian Hijab in AFL Cup countdown begins Colours a Big Win THE TIME IS counting down for the kick-off of the 2015 Asian Cup that starts in Melbourne with a Socceroos match on January 9 next year. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 Local Organising Committee (LOC) said a significant milestone had been achieved in the planning of AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015.
out Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Jakarta, thanks to Younus Mahmood’s 73rd-minute header. A repeat of that success in Australia, though, would not be as much of a surprise despite Iraq only securing qualification for a sixth consecutive finals on the final day of qualifying, with a 3-1 win over China.
“The Asian Cup in Australia will be a three-week, 32-match festival of football culminating in the Final at Stadium Australia on January 31,” LOC CEO Michael Brown said.
After the much-heralded golden generation of 2007, coach Hakeem Shakir is well on the way to creating another Iraqi dynasty after recently winning the inaugural AFC U-22 Championship earlier this year in Muscat.
The Australian stadiums featured are Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Sydney’s Stadium Australia, Brisbane Stadium at Milton, Canberra Stadium in the ACT and Newcastle Stadium in NSW.
In addition, Iraq has achieved runners-up positions at the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship, the 2012 WAFF Championship and the 2013 Gulf Cup of Nations, as well as a famous third-place finish at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

for Multiculturalism MUSLIM HEAD scarves in all 18 AFL team colours are now on sale for fans as the league’s multicultural round gets underway. The AFL has licensed the Unity Sports Wrap, a headscarf designed for fans and players. AFL League boss Gillon McLachlan announced the AFL-approved headwear range today at the 2014 AFL Multicultural Round at the Many Cultures, One Game breakfast in Melbourne. Designer Shanaaz Copeland thought of the idea after she dropped her kids at school on football day, when children were wearing AFL jumpers with traditional head scarves. Ms Copeland hoped the range would break down barriers. Mr McLachlan said it was important the football code embraced all cultures. Bachar Houli, an icon for Muslims in the league, said the head scarves were “a huge thing’’ for Muslim women who were passionate about footy. “There are so many Muslims who attend the footy, but at times don’t feel like they are part of supporting their team,’’ Houli told the Herald Sun. Houli was born in Australia to Lebanese parents. The 26-year-old left-footer began playing football with Spotswood Football Club Under 12s in 2000. After consulting with a Sheikh, Houli decided to break his Ramadan fast for three days during the physical endurance tests at the AFL Draft Camp – this allowed him to record
good enough times to impress recruiters and be a viable selection in the draft.
Houli has said it was tough growing up a devout Muslim while playing Australian rules football.
There was little amount of sport being played in Islamic schools, and he had to sneak out when he was young to play games without his parents knowing.
His persistence finally led to his parents supporting him, which led him to become an AFL player.
Round 18 of the Toyota AFL Premiership season will celebrate Many Cultures, One Game to highlight the contribution multicultural communities make to Australia’s Game at all levels.
There will be a number of multicultural performances on field at AFL games including Shiamak Davar Dance Group, a group of 120 Bollywood dancers who will perform prior to Western Bulldogs v Essendon match at Etihad Stadium.
African drumming groups will perform from the cheer squad areas at the Carlton v North Melbourne game. West Coast Eagles will host Chung Wah Association (Chinese Dragons) entertainment on match day in the Kids Zone.
Greater Western Sydney Giants and Port Adelaide will have multicultural performances and citizenship ceremonies on field.
AFL players from multicultural backgrounds will toss the coin.
The AFL will host Iftar dinners in Melbourne and Sydney, to celebrate Ramadan.

Iraq a team to watch as Asian Cup countdown begins Mohannad Abdul-Raheem and attack-minded full-back Ali Adnan, while Amjed Kalaf was named the MVP at the 2013 AFC U-22 Championship. In fact, all 11 players who featured in the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship final have received recent call-ups to the national team, while the team which started the 2013 AFC U-22 Championship final were all members of the squad which faced China. And while the likes of Saif Salman, Humam Tariq and Ali Faez are other names on this list of emerging talents being developed under Shakir, one constant has remained in recent times in the frame of evergreen striker and captain Mahmood. Having lifted the AFC Asian Cup trophy above his head to world acclaim in 2007, Mahmood has since remained central for Iraq with his two goals against China, and in particular his trademark opener after peeling away from the last man before producing an accomplished finish, underlining his importance. In 2011, Iraq were defeated at the quarter-final stage in extra-time when Harry Kewell netted a late winner for eventual finalists Australia adding to the three consecutive quarter-final exits suffered at the AFC Asian Cup from 1996 to 2004. Their best finish prior to 2007 was a run to the semifinals in 1976 before posting their only FIFA World Cup appearance in 1986. Coach: Hakeem Shakir (Iraq) coached the Iraqi side to a fourth place finish in the U-20 World Cup in 2013 before returning his focus to the senior national team as they aimed to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup.

Shakir’s side did just that with their 3-1 win as their coach was given the plaudits he deserved in what was a difficult qualification group. Shakir coached his first national side in 2011 when he took over the U-20 side and also led the U-23 team before eventually getting the full-time role with the senior side.
