B
y the time you are reading this, another AFL Grand Final will be done and dusted. A new page in footy history will have been written and a new legend may have been born. At the time Advance went to print this month, the truly unexpected occurred with a TIE at the grand final. As I’m writing this, AustCham is working frenetically to put together the second Collingwood vs St.Kilda Grand final for 2010! The first event was spectacular as usual and hopefully the second one will be just as good (though I hope we get a better result this time around)!
We Aussies are simple people. To help us remember our age, we think “How many winter seasons of footy do I remember?” It’s getting to be a lot of winters now that’s for sure. Too many to count soon I fear. The big question for me though is “how is business in Thailand now that another footy season is over? Which leads me to some bigger questions... How are the sales and profits of our members going? Members in Bangkok are providing mixed signals. There are those who are doing very well and those who are yet to see any sustained upturn in business. Even within the tourism sector, there are some who have seen improvements, and others who are yet to get back to anything like profitable occupancy rates. Our Upcountry members, scattered across Phuket, the Eastern Seaboard, Isan and even Chiang Mai, are overall reporting better news. The tourism operators are still down overall, but those that make the effort to analyse, improve and market are telling us that times are good again. The manufacturers and marine members are also doing generally well and some even telling us of better forward orders than ever before. Many are benefitting from the sustained GFC, which has meant business owners in the west have looked east to cut costs further. Has there been any resolution to the political issues in Thailand? Unfortunately this issue just doesn’t seem to be getting resolved in any meaningful and sustainable way. Talk of further protests, elections, corruption, vote buying and court cases just will not go away and is clearly weighing down the overall recovery and positioning of Thailand. The recent World Competitiveness report had Thailand 26th out of 58 countries. This measurement uses both strengths (eg low cost) and weaknesses (political instability) and Thailand is now well behind Singapore, Korea, China,
and Malaysia. The biggest weakness identified now is Thailand’s Infrastructure when compared against others. This is no surprise when the government is not functioning well. Has there been any progress on the longstanding issues for our members in terms of regulations? There has been some wins for AustCham members recently, mostly as a result of the work of the Joint Foreign Chambers. Firstly, it looks as though 3G technology will soon be available to assist business operators gain efficiencies, and along with this, no new interpretations of Foreign Dominance (which could have then been extended to many other industries and affected many members) within legally formed and owned Thai companies. Secondly, for those importing goods, the new customs laws have been drafted, and it seems as though we are very close to achieving some changes in the wording of the penalties and also rewards for customs officers – both of which are contributors to corrupt practices and the cost of imported products. Has AustCham made any improvements to help our members improve their business performance? Yes – the board and office are working very hard on a few improvements. We are making some long awaited changes to the web site, will be introducing a new membership card system to be linked with opportunities for our members to provide offers to other members (this to me is a very basic part of being a member of a chamber of commerce that has been overlooked for too long) and are developing some new ideas for handling visitors from Australia and other countries. Of course we are always looking for any new ideas members may want to suggest.

Cultural Relationship Blossoms in the Northern Art Hub of Thailand
T
he Australian Embassy, Bangkok recently boosted international art enthusiasm among locals in Chiang Mai, the northern cultural hub of Thailand, with a touring exhibition of works by six internationally renowned Australian artists. In exchange, Chiang Mai talented artists highly impressed Australian Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Paul Grigson with their outstanding artistic skills.
Amornthep is one of six Thai ceramic artists who participated in “Clay Alchemy”, a cultural exchange program with six Australian ceramic artists in 2006. Funded by the Australia-Thailand Institute under Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the programme provided an opportunity for the artists to visit one another’s countries for a series of lectures, practical demonstrations and tours.
Ambassador Grigson started his cultural visit in Chiang Mai by presiding over the opening of the touring art exhibition Erased: Contemporary Australian drawing at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. The exhibition had already been successfully showcased in Bangkok earlier in June.
“The program allowed me to exchange ideas and observe different ways in presenting ceramic art. I was amazed by Australia’s extensive ceramic art collection, from old to modern. The artistic circle in Australia is not limited to artists or enthusiasts only, but engages more broadly with the general public, which in some ways also responds well to the development of the tourism and education sectors,” said Amornthep.
Attended by over 200 Chiang Mai art enthusiasts and students on the opening night, the exhibition challenged and engaged the audience in transforming the definition of drawing, as well as observing the subtle impact that erasure has on each creative artwork. The next morning, Ambassador Grigson took a rare opportunity to visit three successful local artists who have closer professional links with Australia. Accompanied by Asst Prof Somporn Rodboon from Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, Ambassador Grigson first met with Kitikong Tilokwattanotai, an acclaimed master printmaker at his Chiangmai Art on Paper (C.A.P) studio on the chic Nimmanhaemin Road.
Ambassador Grigson presided over and toured the opening of the art exhibition Erased: Contemporary Australian drawing at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University.
Kitigong’s studio is supported though annual sponsorship agreements from interested businesses and individuals in exchange for prints from his studio artists. “I started this studio with only a few thousand baht in my pocket. This is how I prove myself, that I can really make a living from art,” said Kitikong. Then further away from downtown Chiang Mai, Ambassador Grigson travelled to meet with humble yet notable ceramic artist, Amornthep Mahamart at his outdoor studio hidden amidst the hills of the tranquil district of Mae Rim.
Although his studio is now a hub of creative activity and commercially successful Kitikong said he had to struggle through a number of financial obstacles. Thanks to his years as a printmaking student at the Cicada Press, the College of Fine Arts (COFA), the University of New South Wales in Australia, Kitikong has gained both the essential artistic skills as well as the business acumen to realise his artistic dream back in Thailand. Ambassador Grigson and Bec Dean met with Amornthep Mahamart, a notable ceramic artist at his outdoor studio.
Ambassador Grigson concluded his Chiang Mai trip with a visit to open-air studio house of Kade Javanalikikorn. Kade is a high-profile Chiang Mai printmaking and painting artist who was an Artist-inResidence at Cicada Press, the College of Fine Arts (COFA), the University of New South Wales in 2007. Some of his collections have also been selected to be on display at the National Gallery of Australia. “During my time there I found the Australian art community to be quite vibrant and exciting. It could be comparable to the European art community. Thanks to high quality art schools and teachers, there have lately been a range of emerging Australian artists with fresh creativity and styles,” said Kade. Ambassador Grigson said he was very impressed with how local artists in Chiang Mai have sustained their originality while constructively interacting with the contemporary world. “It is Australia’s intention to continue to foster Australia and Thailand’s relationship in the arts, to present to the people of Thailand, Australia’s contemporary art and culture as well as to support the very best of Thai arts,” said the Ambassador. AustCham Shanghai’s Expo Excitement
S
hanghai World Expo 2010 is the biggest Expo in history, with more than 200 participating countries and organisations, and more than 70 million visitors. The expo opened with a spectacular fireworks display in front of Chinese and international dignitaries and the city has been consumed with excitement and abuzz with visitors ever since. Australia has invested AUD$83 million in its pavilion at the expo. The Australian pavilion was the first to open and received unparalleled coverage after the visit by the Chinese President Hu Jintao. The Australian pavilion is one of the biggest pavilions in terms of size and visitor numbers, making it one of the most popular country pavilions at Expo. Every day, approximately 47,000 visitors get a taste of Australia as they make the journey through the pavilion. To date over six million visitors have passed through. The Australian pavilion has three comprehensive exhibition spaces: visitors start in Act One on a ‘Journey’ celebrating Australia’s indigenous culture, modern history, and the achievements of women in both Australia and China. Act Two, ‘Discover,’ features a unique audio visual presentation in-the-round and explores the Better City, Better Life theme of Expo through the eyes of three young Australians. In Act Three, ‘Enjoy,’ visitors can sample some delicious Australian cuisine or spoil themselves with a unique souvenir – the cheeky kookaburra mascot, Peng Peng, has been particularly popular as well as opals, lanolin and Ugg boots. AustCham Shanghai is proud to be an Associate Partner of the Australian pavilion and has been working with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) since 2006 providing

From the Chamber Office
Message from the ED
F
irstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who helped make the TWO AFL Grand Final Days a great success and a special thank you to our event sponsor V Australia who made the 2010 AFL in Thailand extra spcial.
As always, our major events could not run smoothly without all our sponsors, so thank you to the following companies for their continued support; Allied Pickfords for logistics support; Oakwood for the official AFL Records and Cargo Partner and World Link for making sure that the Records got here in time; Lady Pies for supplying the half time treats; Rajas Fashions for the photography and of course the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel for providing such a great venue. I would also like to thank all the companies who donated prizes for lucky draw and the raffle. Monies raised from the sale of the raffle tickets are donated to our Community Services program. Last but not least I would like to thank the AustCham office staff. The staff work extremely hard to preparing the day and making sure that all of our events such as the AFL Grand Final Day run smoothly. Thanks team for another job well done! Unfortunately we have to go to print during the early stages of planning the second AFL Grand Final for 2010 after a tied game on Saturday, which means that we’ll have to wait for next month’s edition to say thanks to the support we get for this event. The next of our major events will be the AustCham Business Awards which will be held in January 2011. Strategically moved to celebrate Australian Business closer to our national day, the Business Awards will be getting a facelift and some much needed improvements. The event will still be our gala black tie event open to all Austcham members and will include award categories for Tourism and Hospitality, CSR and Environmental Awareness, Best Services Company, Industrial Excellence and Education, Human Development, the People’s Choice and of course the Business of the Year Award. The night will also celebrate the third annual

11.00 registration for a 12.00 shotgun start Venue: Phoenix Golf Course, Huai Yai Young Alumni of the Year Award. The nomination forms can be downloaded from our website - make sure you enter and who knows, you could be the 2010 Business of the Year! Our Sundowners continue to be well supported and are still the premier networking activities in Thailand. Last month’s Bangkok Sundowners had close to 300 people attending the event held at The Landmark Bangkok and kindly sponsored by Meinhardt. Sundowners in Chiang Mai was held at the Dusit D2 and generously sponsored by Oasis Spa. While we would love to keep the Sundowners prices to a minimum, unfortunately the Chamber is not in a position to maintain discount prices for booking and paying on-line. Therefore, starting this month, the Chamber will return to having two prices for Sundowners; a members and a non-members price only. While the price remains the same, I still do encourage you all to keep on booking and paying on-line prior to the event avoiding any queuing on the night.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Camillian Social Center Rayong, a hospice and orphanage for children and families affected by HIV and AIDS.
