PERSPECTIVE
OUR TIME TO GIVE BACK AND PAY IT FORWARD
Sandy Eckhardt
CREA Management 2019-2020 President
Giving back and paying it forward; these are concepts I do not take lightly. I have been so very blessed in my life and consider it a duty and privilege to share those blessings with others who may be less fortunate. I also recognize I would not have as many opportunities in life to give back if it weren’t for the generosity of the rental housing industry.
As fall approaches, so does the time to kick off one of my favorite ways to pay it forward: the annual Doc & Gayle Young Food Drive. Once again, our Community Outreach will helm this project with the goal of raising $65,000 to buy Thanksgiving food packs for needy families and individuals in and around Austin. Did you know 100% of the funds raised are donated? My husband and I give every year and I encourage you to do the same. You can go to AustinFoodDrive.com to make an online donation, or support the Food Drive by attending one of the fun events this fall. Help kick off this year’s drive at the Karaoke Kick Off Happy Hour on September 5th.
I consider giving back to the rental housing industry to be just as important as a charitable donation. One way the Austin Apartment Association offers its members to give back is by playing in a golf tournament. Hard work, I
know. Registering to play in the Larry Niemann Fall Golf Classic coming up toward the end of September means you have made a donation to the Apartment PAC Austin, our local political action committee. Apartment PAC Austin is our association’s political voice, providing an opportunity for members interested in the welfare and future of the free enterprise rental housing market to support candidates for local and state office who believe - and have demonstrated their beliefs - in our pro-housing point of view.
These are just two ways I like to give back and pay it forward, personally. It is important to me that our association offers all its members these types of opportunities. We all can make a difference for the good of the world, but it is our collective effort that can take our impact from good to great.
