A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAMBER

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AUSTIN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SETS THE ORGANIZATION’S PRIORITIES AND PROGRAMMING.

BELOW IS AN OUTLINE OF PRIORITIES FOR 2016 AND BEYOND:

#1 PRIORITY -- AustinWorks. Member businesses have noted that it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain key employees to our area. AustinWorks is a collaborative, workforce initiative designed to help companies recruit employees and connect their families to the community. Major components of the program include: Community Concierge. A clearinghouse of information and personalized services, designed to introduce and connect all family members to the community. Renewed Commitment to Students of all ages seeking pathways to employment and career enhancement through programs such as Step Up Austin. The overall goal of the program is to encourage and assist more families to choose Austin as a place to work, live and play. Funding for this new initiative is being provided by sponsoring employers and The Hormel Foundation as part of Vision 2020. Over 200 employees and families are served by AustinWorks each year. #2 PRIORITY -- Promoting Our Members Buy Mower/Grow Mower, a shop local campaign, was established in 2008 in response to data that showed declining retail sales in Austin and Mower County. Since Buy Mower was established as the Chamber’s No. 1 marketing priority, retail sales have improved. City retail sales tax collections are double initial projections established in 2008. However, overall sales continue to lag statewide averages. The Board feels the Buy Mower message is an important one and should be continued and enhanced. To improve the effectiveness of the Buy Mower/Grow Mower campaign, the Board suggests the following. • Putting a “face” on business and noting community benefits through We Are Austin. • Increased the marketing budget for Buy Mower/We Are Austin to $18,000 per year.

• Expand direct marketing opportunities for members through coupon books. • Encourage more members to purchase Chamber Bucks for employee rewards, sending a message that it is important for them to support other businesses within the community.

• Reach out to all members with staff and board members to review Chamber programming and changing membership needs. • Continue Grow Mower/Grow Minnesota business retention and expansion program, monitoring the State of Business in Austin and Mower County. • Maintain a 94% retention rate. • Add 35 new members. #4 PRIORITY -- Business Advocacy The Chamber will provide a strong, effective voice for its business members in government affairs. • Continue partnership with Minnesota Chamber and other local chambers in advancing business priorities at the State Capitol through the Chamber Federation. • Encourage and support quality candidates for local elected offices through the Business Leadership Committee. • Build coalitions of support for Chamber positions. • Encourage business engagement in community issues through development of community leaders through programs such as Leadership Austin. #5 PRIORITY -- Promoting Our Community, The Chamber will host activities that connect and showcase our members, and also organize events that enhance our quality of life and improve our area economy. The Chamber will work through Vision 2020 toward projects that enhance the quality of life in Austin and Mower County. • Vision 2020 • Christmas in the City • Freedom Fest • Ag Appreciation Summer Cookout

A marketing committee, established to launch and promote a shop local campaign in an effort to increase retail sales activity.

An economic development initiative designed to help attract, develop and sustain a quality workforce with skills that align with current and future career opportunities in Austin and the surrounding area. An advisory committee works directly with the coordinator of the program, Austin’s Community Concierge.

COMMUNITY RECEPTIONIST was formed to promote Austin as a great place to live and work, and to provide new and prospective residents with information they need to quickly assimilate to the community.

CHAMBER COMMITTEES

FREEDOM FESTIVAL

organizes events and activities celebrating community and Independence Day, including entertainment, parade, concessions, crafts, and fireworks. Multi-day events held annually in conjunction with the 4th of July.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

exists to provide Chamber business members with an effective voice on local and legislative issues.

GROW MINNESOTA!

Organized as a statewide private sector business retention and expansion program led by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce in partnership with 55 local Chambers. Locally, the Austin Chamber partners on this project with the DCA.

Crane Pavilion is approximately 7,000 square feet, plus bleacher seating for 800 people, and can be used as an indoor arena. Plager Building is a clear span building with about 11,000 square feet. Three additional clear span buildings, with total area of 45,000 square feet, are also available. Covered grandstand with seating for 2,500, ample power for stage shows, and large infield area for parking. Other features include lighted outdoor arena with announcing stand, small meeting rooms (heated and air-conditioned), modern restrooms with showers, large parking areas and paved streets, and livestock penning and covered livestock stations. Picnic tables, park benches, portable bleachers, and camping hook-ups are also available. 40 acres of fence secured property. Catering and liquor allowed with city licensing.
