AUSTIN ARTWORKS FESTIVAL

Trunk Show Trunk show artists are Tammy Rice (jewelry), Margie Kline (pottery) and Maria Tonelli (cards made from original charcoal pastels - she is Margie’s granddaughter). They will be at the ArtWorks center all day during Sat and Sun. Come meet the artists and hear about their process.

TAMMY RICE

is a self-taught artist from Minnesota. She enjoys taking discarded and used materials and recycling them into new distinctive creations. Her collections are made from various discarded inner tubes and found objects, and currently uses tractor, dump truck, and bicycling tubes. Each piece is hand-designed. Why an interest in inner tubes? Tammy was surprised to learn that inner tubes take years to decompose and that companies aren’t disposing of them properly because they have to pay fees to do so. The designs are created by taking used and discarded materials and transforming them to the opposite spectrum to keep you and our planet beautiful. The jewelry, and people who purchase it, are making a positive impact on the environment.

MARGIE KLINE

loved clay in high school and was able to revisit it about 15 years ago when she was given a kiln and a wheel. She then took a ceramics class from Bill Mateer through NIACC in Mason City IA. Working with mid-range clay and high fire stoneware clay, Margie’s work is fired in electric, gas, and soda kilns. The soda fire kiln is her favorite because it is the one you interact with the most, and is also the most unpredictable. Each time you open a kiln, it is like Christmas. A lot of her work is inspired by people asking to make a particular item. Most is utilitarian so the purpose of the piece makes it easier to design. The hardest part about creating a masterpiece is letting yourself think it is a masterpiece. Interesting tidbit- Margie discovered 25 years after finishing high school that her art teacher had kept and used several of her high school pottery pieces as examples to show his art students.
