A tradition worth continuing Christmas in the City returns for 22nd year of promoting holiday tradition

There was a period this year, to be honest, that I was a little in doubt. The warm, summer-like weather that extended well into fall seemed to belie the fact that colder weather, and yes, the Christmas holiday season, was not far off. Maybe it was the election, too, or the busy “back-to-school” schedule. But whatever the reason, it was hard for many — including myself — to focus and plan for this year’s Christmas in the City. As the time came ever closer, we wondered a bit as to whether or not this year’s schedule of events would measure up to those which have entertained so many for more than 20 years. But sure as the snow flies in Minnesota in the winter, there was little need to worry. Like so many elves, the Christmas in the City committee went to work and brought in more businesses, more events and more activities than ever before. This year’s official Christmas in the City calendar is chockfull of entertaining options for all members of the community. Nearly 80

businesses and organizations list events that are designed to showcase themselves, delight their customers and celebrate the holiday season. It’s a tradition worth continuing and building upon. Christmas in the City started as a downtown, Main Street event in the late 1980s. It was a way to kickoff the shopping season for retailers and invite everyone downtown to see the beautiful holiday decorations for which Austin is well-known. It’s always been an event with family in mind, featuring the traditional sights and sounds of the holidays.
