The Austin Packer dance team hasn’t gone to the state tournament 16 years in a row by accident. The Packers have maintained their success by treating their team like their family, and the Packer captains serve as the glue that keeps that family together. Austin head coach Kayla Sellers has a strong perspective on the importance of captains as she was once a member of the Packer dance team. She relies on the captains to help out younger dancers, to lead the way in practice and to generally keep the team in line. “We always have high expectations for our captains,” Sellers said. “They provide strong leadership for our team and they’ve been great this year.” This season the Packers will look to Jori Johnson, Madison Lang, Taige Iverson and Baylee Phillips to take on the role of serving as captains for the Packers. “It’s an honor that we get to be leaders of this team,” IverAUSTIN DAILY HERALD - WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW

son said. “The younger girls look up to us and we want to be our best so that they can be their best.” Growing up in dance, many of the Packers are friends with each other from childhood on up. The team’s bond grows even stronger when they reach the varsity level. “We grow a lot over the years,” Iverson said. “A lot of us have done this since we were little and we’ve been friends for a long time. We continue to grow and that makes the dance better. When we are one, we dance as one.” Dance practices can be a grueling experience with endless high kicks and plenty of hard work. Johnson said it’s up to the seniors to pull the younger dancers through the workout. “When you’re a senior, you want to show them that we’ve all made it through and they can too,” Johnson said. As usual, the expectations are high for the Packers as they chase their 17th straight state berth.

APDT thinking big heading into 2018 The Austin Packer dance team is looking to keep its state streak alive as it comes into the season with plenty of optimism. The Packers have competed in the last 16 state dance meets and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Austin head coach Kayla Sellers has seen plenty of talent and work ethic on display early this season and it has her looking forward to the potential of the squad. “Things are going great. Our expectations are higher than they’ve ever been and we’re already well “Things are going great. on our way Our expectations are to meeting them,” higher than they’ve Sellers said. ever been and we’re “We’re always looking already well on our way at the little to meeting them” things that Kayla Sellers can make us Head coach great.” While some of the current Packer dance team members weren’t even born when the state streak began, they all have a perspective on how important it is to give it their all on a daily basis. Austin senior Jori Johnson said the team isn’t going to leave anything to chance this year. “We push hard at practice so when we get on the floor, it’s everything we have,” Johnson said. “It’s not really tough if you love the sport and you come every day wanting to do

what you love.” The Packers are bringing a strong competitive edge into this season and they’re certainly not content with what they’ve done in past years.

“We always want to strive to be our best,” Austin senior Taige Iverson said. “We’re continuing to push and we’re excited for competitions and to see what other teams have to bring.”

APDT: Team grows together as a family From Page 1 Workouts can be long and intense, but it’s all worth it for a team that competes together as teammates and fami-

ly members. “We’ve grown together with dance and your friends are the girls that are in dance. You’re just always together,” Phillips said. “We take it one day at a time.

We just try to be our best every day at practice. The other dancers watch (the captains) and they want to be just like you. Not only are you bettering yourself, but you’re bettering your team.”

AUSTIN DAILY HERALD - WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW

Changing of the guard, but same goals A lot of faces have changed with the Austin boys basketball team, but the expectations remain high for a group that is aiming to earn a third straight state appearance. Senior Medi Obang is the lone starter back from last year’s team that went 27-4 overall and took fourth in the Minnesota Class AAA State Tournament. He will play a much bigger role on this year’s team on and off the court. “It’s been good, the new guys are doing fine and they’re kind of getting it down,” Obang said. “We’re going to have to rebound a lot, work as a team and make the extra pass to get guys involved.” Austin’s roster is not as deep as it has been in past years, but Austin head coach Kris Fadness still feels the team can be competitive on a nightly basis. Austin returns seniors Dongrin Deng and Ngor Deng, who are both defensive standouts and solid playmakers, and the team is also looking for junior Agwa Nywesh, sophomore Teyghan Hovland and senior Gavin Owens to step up their game. “I think we’ve got a chance to be pretty good,” Fadness said. “It’s going to come down to how we value the basketball and if we can be patient. Defensively we need to create some havoc and force turnovers. We don’t have much size, but we’re fast. We’re going to try and spread defenses out and we’re going to try and spread teams out and drive the ball to the basket.” The Packers will look to trap teams and create transition hoops this season and the Deng twins will play a big role in that strategy. Dongrin said the team is starting to click early on. “We’re trying to play together and get used to each other. We’ve played in some open gyms, where we’ve bonded together and learned each other’s games,” Deng said. “We push each other to the max and we know each others’ strength’s and weaknesses. We’re really motivated to get back to the state tournament. Our goal is to win the state championship.” Fadness is hoping his team can go seven or eight players deep this season and the squad has some options off the bench. Connor Byram, LaHenry Gills, Ryan Walters, Pierre Lilly, Moses Idris and Ogur Gari all have a chance to chip in. Jeremy Flores will likely give the them a paint presence once he returns from an injury. “I like our skill set,” Fadness said. “We handle the ball extremely well and we’ve got some guys that can shoot it and pass.” AUSTIN DAILY HERALD - WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW

The Austin girls basketball team has a wealth of riches in its backcourt this season and the Packers are hoping to find the formula to utilize those players in the best way possible. Not only do the Packers bring back freshman standouts Hope Dudycha and Emma Dudycha, the team brings back Colie Justice and Elyse Hebrink, who both missed last season with injuries. Senior Abby Lewis also returns as a versatile player who averaged 13.4 points per game on last year’s team that went 14-14 overall as it lost to eventual Minnesota Class AAA runner-up Northfield in the Section 1AAA semifinals. “It’s kind of nice,” Justice said. “Some teams might say too much talent can get to be too much, but it’s nice that not just one person has to bring up the ball. There are literally five of us that can bring it up at any point and it’s nice to have options.” Austin head coach Eric Zoske said his team stayed busy over the summer as it played in 16 games, while staying active in the weight room and open gyms. Austin has a deep roster and it may be tough for Zoske to decide who to put on the court at times. “It’s going to be kind of a night by night basis and we’ll have to feel it out as we go. I’m fortunate to have the challenge,” Zoske said. “I could put nine girls’ names in a hat and draw names and I could have five starters where I don’t think anybody would have questions about why I’m doing it. Nobody’s going to feel bad for me, but it is a challenge because we have a lot of girls that are worthy of playing time.” Austin’s guards will play a huge role in this season, but the Packers will also have to play strong in the paint if they want to find success this season. Kiwi VanZant and Krya Walters will try to anchor the lane as they crash the boards. “We’re not the biggest team, but we’re really working on our inside-outside game because we have some really good shooters,” Walters said. “Kiwi and I will try to get position and pass it back out for open looks.” To off-set their lack of size, the Packers are

likely to play a lot of pressure defense this season - hoping to create havoc in opponents’ backcourts. If things go right, the Packers think they can accomplish some tall tasks this year. “We have big goals for the end of the season, but we want to just keep working hard and getting better every day,” Lewis said. “We all trust each other to make the right decisions and to value the ball when we have it.” The Packers are certainly in the right mindset heading into the season. “We have a really positive vibe in practice,” Justice said. “Everyone is working really hard and we’re really getting after each other in practice. We know we can do some big things this year, but we’ve got to put the work into it.”

Strong youth presence works into gymnastics mix Sheldon, Raymond, DeLaMater have state experience The Austin gymnastics team has a strong core of younger gymnasts coming up to go along with some gymnasts who have state meet experience as the Packers hope to keep building on the program. Austin will look for leadership from senior Sam Sheldon and juniors Morgan Raymond and Jordan DeLaMater, who all have state meet experience. “It’s crazy with this being my last year after doing it for 14 years. I’m going to make it a good one and hope for the best,” Sheldon said. “(The young girls) are a little timid and scared. We just have to push out of them comfort zone and get them to try new things.” Austin also has some key returnees in Lillian Reynen, Claire Raymond, Ashley Myhre and Hanna Thompson. Austin’s new group of gymnasts includes sophomore Maria Morey, who competed with the Rochester Jets gymnastics club in the past, and a lot of gymnasts from the YMCA program. “The younger girls are doing really good,” Raymond said. “This group has a lot of potential and we’re hoping to use it all up. State is the final goal, but we’re trying to keep from thinking about that too much.” Austin head coach Bethany Hander said the Packers have stepped up as a group and the team has good numbers with 15 gymnasts on board. “The older ones are really taking the little ones under their wings,” Hander said. “The team works really hard and I’m hoping for a good year.”

Packer boys focusing on D The Austin boys hockey team is looking to protect its own goal this season as it brings back plenty of experience on defense. Austin will bring back senior goalie Ryan Flanders, along with five of its top six defenseman from last season. The Packers finished with a record of 8-18-1 overall last season, but senior defenseman AJ Mueller thinks the Packers showed big potential when they lost to eventual state qualifier Mankato East 2-0 in the postseason. “It was a bitter feeling (to lose that game), but we still felt good about that season. This year we want to be able to beat teams like that,” Mueller said. “I think we’ll be even stronger defensively than we were last year. We just have to get more creative, and we’ll have to find our touch and what works for us.” Austin graduated two key scorers in Dylan Svoboda and Bryar Flanders — who are both playing with the Rochester Grizzlies this season — but Austin head coach Jason Merritt said the Packers have come ready to make improvements this season. “The energy level has been good in practice. We’ve had good pace. Like always, we’re trying to get our new kids up to speed and we’re getting our older kids ready for the season,” Merritt said. “They seem to all get a long and that’s key. They enjoy being at the rink.”

Austin’s AJ Mueller dumps the puck toward the net against Winona last season. Herald file photo Merritt also feels that Austin will be able to stay in games with its defense and goaltending. “We’re strong on the back end,” Merritt said. “They all have varsity experience and they know what it’s about and they know what’s expected of them. Hopefully we can find a few kids to step up in scoring and get some much needed goals.”

Packer girls hockey looks to take big steps this year toward lofty goals The Austin girls hockey team is looking for a big senior class to do big things on the ice this season. The Packers have their largest senior class in years as the team has seven seniors — many of whom have a lot of varsity experience. “We’re a big senior class,” said Austin senior Lilly Holtz. “We have a lot of talent in that locker room and we have a lot of heart. For most of us in that locker room, our goal is state this year.” The Packers went 9-16 overall last season and the team is looking to make big improvements on that mark this season. Jaiden Schuster, Holtz and Hannah McMasters will look to provide the scoring up front and Erin Bickler and Jordyn McCormack will hold down the defense. “We’re really excited. We think this is definitely our year,” Bickler said. “We want to go to state and we think we can do it.” Shelby Davidson-Newkirk will see most of the goalie duties for the Packers season. Schuster said Austin will have to stay on the same page if it wants to increase the win total. “We have to work well together, we have to communicate,” she said. “We have to pass and skate together. We have to have a positive attitude.” Austin has a large influx of young players on the team

The younger players have a lot to learn from them,” Grunewald said. “We can do a lot of great things. It all come down to them and it’s all in their heart and what they want to give.”

Wrestlers making up for low numbers The Austin wrestling team is a little short on numbers at the lower weights, but it’s hoping that a new coaching staff can help the team show steady improvement throughout the year. Jacob Nelson will take over at the helm for the Packers after being an Austin assistant coach for the past two years. “We’ve got a lot of freshman and sophomores just stepping into a varsity role,” Nelson said. “We’re going to take our lumps, but hopefully we can learn and build for the future.” Austin will have trouble filling the 106 pounds and 113 pounds spots in duals, but the team does have high hopes for some of its individual wrestlers. “We’ll be giving up some weight classes for dual meets, but I think we’re going to have some really strong individuals who will be able to compete at sections and place well, or even go to state,” Nelson said. “We have high goals on the individual side.” Austin will look for leadership from its two captains — junior Gavin Brady, who missed most of last season after being injured in a car wreck and senior Josh Belden.

Austin’s Josh Belden tries to reverse on Rochester John Marshall’s Justin Higgins at 152 pounds in Ove Berven Gym last season. Herald file photo Brady is slowly working his way back to shape, but he’ll be ready to go full speed this season. “I’m happy to be back. I’m a little rusty,

but I’ll get back into it. Just give me a couple of tournaments and I”ll be good,” Brady said. “We’d like to send a couple of guys to state for sure. I want everybody to work hard

Packers looking to make waves with new coach The Austin boys swimming and diving team is bringing back some swimmers with state experience and it has a new head coach on board as it looks to make some waves this season. The Packers bring back Logan Kelly, who took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke at at the Minnesota Class A State Meet last season, Riley Norton, who has state diving experience, and Race Dolan Peterson, who swam at the state meet last year. Austin first-year head coach Ryan Kelly, who was a an Austin girls assistant coach for three years, is taking over at the helm and he’s hoping his first year is a good one. “It's been a ton of work to this point getting everything organized. I'm looking forward to it and it's been fun so far. I think it's going to be a good year. We've got a solid group of boys with some room to grow,” Kelly said. “It's going to be a process just learning what our intervals need to be and who needs to be put in what events. We'll try and find the right mix and see who's grown into what this year.” Austin senior Brockdon Lawhead said the Packers are hoping to send at least two relay teams to state this season — along with some individuals. team concept in practice and the fast swimmers are getting faster. “Being a team is a huge part of it,” Lawhead said. “Without your team, you lose a lot of motivation to push each other and become the best you can be. Rebels looking for new players to lead The Southland boys basketball team is looking for some new players to chip in this season as the Rebels have graduated seven players from a team that 6-17 overall last year. Southland will look to senior Lee Wilson, who is in his fourth year on varsity, to lead the way and Matt Mueller and Caden Sorenson will also be asked to step up as well. “Our team is looking to improve on the overall success of the season,” Southland head coach Matt Webber said. “We lost a bunch of games last year where we were very competitive, but couldn't close the deal. That will be something to improve on.” The Rebels will look to have some depth in their favor this season as Corey Retterath, Travis Russell and Reece Tapp could all chip in much more this year than last year. Webber likes what his bench could give him this sea-

Rebel girls relying on a young team in new season The Southland girls basketball team will look for a young group of players to grow up early this season as it looks to make improvements on last year’s record of 6-17 overall. Jenna Bentzin is Southland’s lone senior and Lexi Smith is the squad’s lone junior and the rest of the team is made up of sophomores and freshmen. “Jenna has been a great leader and role model. She comes to work every day with a smile on her face and she just loves to play the game,” Southland head coach Dean Bendtsen said. “Lexi’s a good athlete and works very hard every day in practice and leads by example. She's an aggressive defender, good rebounder, and looks to score.” The Rebels are hoping sophomore Larissa Goslee has a big season ahead of her and Kayla Nelsen, Kelsey Mensink, Bailey Johnson, Andrea Kiefer and Kylie Kiefer should all step up as well. “We have great kids with great attitudes. Our girls work hard and are very unselfish,” Bendtsen said. “They play hard for each other and depend on each other to do their parts. We don't have a lot of size and we don't have a lot of experienced depth. Its going to be a challenging, but fun juggling act from a coaching aspect.”

Defending state champs looking to new group The Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team will look to a new group of leaders after the team graduated some of the key players from its state title run. The Athletics, who went 31-1 overall last year and captured the program’s first ever Minnesota Class A State Title, return to key contributors in Abby Bollingberg and Olivia Christianson. Both players will play a big role for LP under first year head coach Anna Meyer. “They are both versatile players with a lot of playing experience,” Meyer said of Christianson and Bollingberg. “One of our weaknesses is the flip side of that, some of our girls have not had a lot of varsity experience and it is getting our players to believe in what they can do individually. It is a new year with new opportunities for players to step up and we will need that to get to where they were last year.” Meyer is hoping the Athletics can improve throughout the season and make a push to get back in contention for the state tournament. “This is going to be a big year for all of our girls to step up and fill the shoes of those that graduated,” Meyer said. “We are excited about our individual strengths and overall what all our players bring to the table.”

LP working toward continued momentum The Lyle-Pacelli boys basketball team is hoping to keep the momentum going a year after it went 16-11 overall and advanced all the way to the Section 1A semifinals for the first time in at least a decade. LP brings back Cole Walter, Zach Bollingberg, Jed Nelson and Trace Fishbaugher from that team and it also has some new players in the mix, including junior Mach Diang, who led the JV in scoring last season. “We run the floor well and understand the game and we have a pretty good shooting team,” LP head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We need to play better defense and get after people and we also need to do a better job of boxing out and controlling the boards.”

Although the Athletics graduated four players, Koenigs likes what his returning players bring to the table as they all picked up experience during last year’s tournament run. “Jed is one of the best players in the conference. He shoots the ball extremely well and does a great job of attacking the rim and running the floor,” Koenigs said. “Cole is a really point guard who sees the floor well and Zachary is a very instinctive player, who does a lot of things well.” Eighth grader Buoy Koak and international student Aron Hoffer-Toth of Austria could see time for LP and Tyson Anderson, Sam Nelsen, Jayden Lewis, Leo Einck, Dominic Gartner, Mike Morgan and Ethan Heard.

BP will look to returning junior playmakers Gabe Hagen, Kaden Thomas and Karson Vigeland to lead the way this season and Zach Archer and Trent Swenson are also back from last year’s team. “Coming off a disappointing season last year, I believe this team has a high ceiling and also a high ‘floor.’” BP head coach Nate Piller said. “There are many returning players with notable basketball experience and the boys have good overall size and athleticism. The worries, for me, begin with our work ethic. I will take partial blame for my role in this. Last year, we had a similar squad with similar prospects and I feel that we performed closer to our floor than to our ceiling.” BP graduated six players from last year’s squad and it will look to Jarrett Larson, Matthew Pryor, Parker Vaith, Zach Weber and Tim Wolf to step up their game. “We have been young for the past couple years and it’s time for us to grow up and meet our expectations of work,” Piller said. “Our defense has to be the pride of who we are. Our defense has to be a tenacious, consuming, relentless effort.”

Young squad looks for competitive run

The Blooming Prairie girls basketball team brings back a group of young, but experienced players this season as the Awesome Blossoms hope to improve throughout the season. BP graduated three key “... as our players gain seniors from confidence, we should last year’s be competitive.” team that went 16-9 John Bruns overall and it Head coach will lean on the leadership of junior Julia Worke, a three-point shooter who can play every position on the court, sophomore Megan Oswald, who averaged 12.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season, and freshman Bobbie Bruns, who showed a lot of improvement last season. AUSTIN DAILY HERALD - WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW

“There are a lot of question marks as we begin the season,” BP head coach John Bruns, who is in his fourth year on the job, said. “Lack of depth and Inexperience will be an issue early in the season, but as our players gain confidence, we should be competitive. Our early practices have been great and we are going to continue to get better as the year goes on”. BP will also look for contributions out of Maya Lembke, Maggie Bruns, Maren Forystek, Allison Krohnberg, Ashleigh Alwes, Anna Kittelson and Baylee Sorenson. Bruns said the program is a little low on numbers, but the team has worked hard towards getting better every day. “With our youth and inexperience, there will be some tough stretches of games, but the goal is to improve from week to week and game to game and be playing our best basketball by the end of the season,” Bruns said. The Hayfield boys basketball team is hoping a move to the Gopher Conference and some valuable experience can vault it into a year of improvement. The Vikings have nine players back from last year’s team that went 5-23 overall last season. Hayfield’s front-line will be its strength as junior Luke Dudycha, who is 6 feet, 7 inches tall, averaged 12.4 points and 9.1 rebounds last season and senior Mason Tapp, who is 6 feet, 5 inches, averaged 12.7 points per game last year. “We gained valuable experience despite having a difficult season last year and will hopefully be greatly improved because of that,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack, who is in his 19th season in charge, said. “We should be able to shoot the ball well from the outside this year and also have an inside game.” Hayfield is hoping to open Gopher Conference play in style this season after leaving the HVL last year. “We expect to be a top eight seed in the section and compete with the top teams in the section,” Pack said.

Junior Colton Krell took second at 170 pounds in state after going 38-4 last year and Dylan Nirk competed in the state meet after going 30-8. Westfield will look for senior Tristan

Westfield lost Riley Schultz and Seth Peterson to injuries before the season and a few other wrestlers from last year are not back this season as well. “We feel we should be able to finish in

the top three or four in the conference and section by having a balanced lineup in the lower weights and being strong in the upper weights,” Westfield co-head coach Chad Gimbel said. “Our younger wrestlers are going to have to fill the holes and show growth from last season.” Westfield is a consolidated team made up of wrestlers from Hayfield and Blooming Prairie.

Vikings look for seniors to fill leadership roles The Hayfield girls basketball team is hoping a big senior class can bring the changing of the guard after the Vikings graduated a large group of players from last year’s team that went 25-5 overall and lost to eventual state champ Lyle-Pacelli in the Section 1A title game. Hayfield will also be without senior Brooke Bungum, who is out for the season with an ACL injury. The Vikings will look to Elecia Brown, the lone returning starter, and Emma Holst and Abby Stasko are both back in the lineup after seeing varsity time last year. “We will have great team speed and girls that have the ability to get by their defender to get to the basket,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We will look for Elecia Brown to be our floor leader as she has the most minutes played of everyone returning and will have the ball in her hand the most at the point guard spot.” Hayfield will also look to Payton Slaathaug, Jaelynn Therring and Hannah

“We will have great team speed and girls that have the ability to get by their defender to get to the basket.” Kasey Krekling Co-head coach Faulhaber to provide a lift for the Vikings, who are entering their first year in the Gopher Conference after playing in the HVL last year. “We do not have great team size so we will need to work on our help defense in the post when other teams have a size advantage,” Krekling said. “We look forward to competing in our new conference and hopefully challenging for the conference championship.”

AUSTIN DAILY HERALD - WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW

5 Stories to watch

1. Changing of the guard

and they’re hoping they learned enough in last year’s postseason run to put together a solid year on the hardwood.

The Austin boys basketball team will look to a whole new group of players to keep the program amongst the best in Class AAA. The Packers graduated a bulk of the group that took it to back-toback state tournaments, but the team brings back a go-to scorer in Medi Obang and Dongrin Deng and Ngor Deng are also back as double threat players. The rest of the squad will have to prove itself as the season runs along.

4. Back from a Break

Last season was a tough year for Austin girls basketball players Elyse Hebrink and Colie Justice as both of them missed the entire season with knee injuries. After an offseason full of rehab, both players are back in the lineup and they give the Packers incredible depth at guard — where Austin returns the freshmen duo of Emma Dudycha and Hope Dudycha.

2. Super Charged

The Grand Meadow girls basketball team found itself in the state rankings for the first time in a long time when the Superlarks were ranked No. 7 in the first Minnesota Class A poll of the year. GM has a very experienced roster and it has two big time playmakers in Jordyn Glynn and Riley

Those players — Zach The Lyle-Pacelli boys basketball Bollingberg, Cole Walter and Jed team made a big statement when Nelson — are now all a year older

5. Dance Dynasty

The Austin Packer dance team keeps on kicking and it’s hoping to extend its current streak of 16 straight state meet appearances this winter. The Packers have strong leadership and plenty of work ethic.
